We have classified the 71 complaints from 2009 Nissan Altima about AIR BAGS into the following categories.
Upon starting vehicle, the red airbag indicator light never stops flashing and passenger airbag off light is illuminated, even with adults in both front seats. problem continues while driving and with subsequent use. sudden failure of airbag sensors.
Takata recall
The airbag warning light is flashing indicating there is a problem with the airbag system. a scan of the vehicle shows a problem with the occupant sensor which is the sensor in the passenger seat. this is a problem with almost every year of nissan altima and there are multiple recalls for this problem but nissan said this vehicle is not included in the recalls. this is ridiculous when they obviously have had continuing problems with this part.
2009 nissan altima passenger airbag sensor issue. the airbag light that indicates when the airbags are on/off remains lit at all times. this includes nothing in the seat, and when a person is riding in seat. after inspection dealership confirmed it was the passenger side occupancy sensor; a short occurred within the unit. (see diagnostic information pictured) the vehicle is affected by this issue at all times and under all circumstances.
I first started noticing the passenger airbag light flashing off and on when i would place a heavy item in the seat. i was in my driveway with the car running. then the same thing happened with a passenger in the seat. then it eventually was saying that the passenger airbag was turned off wither there was a passenger or not. i took to a nissan dealership and they told me it was an occupant sensor fail b1018 and i would have to get it fixed before my next state inspection or it wouldn't pass. they want $2879.49 just for the part. the trade in value is not worth that much according to kbb. my understanding is that other nissan owners are having the same problem. this is clearly a fail that nissan should take responsibility for.
Front passenger seat air bag sensors faulty, light indicates air bag off (console amber), also flashing red light in instrument cluster, it's a safety issue, no recalls yet but in the forums it's a lot of people complaining about it, also the whole seat had to be replaced, the cost it's more than $3,000.00.
Takata recall... i was hit from behind by a commercial trk doing 50 mph i was going 5 mph getting ready to make a left hand turn, when hit. no airbags deployed & the shoulder harness on the seat belt failed to lock. resulting in concussion, serious back, neck & hip injuries.. two complete safety failiers when hit at 50+ mph. this is completely unacceptable. ## vin failed ## nissan altima 2009 ##
The passenger airbag ocs has quit working causing the passenger air light to stay on saying passenger airbags are off and the red airbag light to flash. called dealer and they say sensor has went out in passenger seat but they need to look at it. my vehicle is unsafe to be on the road being the airbag system is faulty. i'm reporting because i know not only one and nissan should be responsible for fix for cars like mine. they already recalled newer models and they need go back further in the year models
Airbag warning light on dashboard. have replaced passenger seat with malfunctioning seat sensor twice within last 5 years. now getting a warning of airbag malfuntion for the entire vehicle. vehicle does this at rest and driving. my vehicle doesn't fall under takata recall, but right now car is unsafe for my entire family.
Air bag light comes on periodically 'no airbag'. problem since 2014; along with steering lock failure (fixed), along with manifold exhaust problem(fixed). windshield wipers keep wearing out, left driver side because blade is too tight; brakes vibrate when stopping,;car vibrates at 70 mph, and car sounds like wind tunnel when driving highway yet windows are up.
About 2 weeks ago i noticed that my air bag dash light was blinking. so i took my car into the shop and had it diagnosed for $125 (of course) then the service adviser states that a sensor in my passenger seat is not working and it cannot determine if an adult or a child is sitting in the passenger chair. in order for me to fix it i'd have to change out the whole chair assembly. i said why do i have to pay for this, this is a safety issue, so if the air bags don't deploy in an accident why should i be liable when it's a safety issue. this should be a safety recall and not the owners responsibility. i maintenance my vehicle every time on the money and to have a simple sensor cost almost $3,000 i don't think so.
I have a problem with the driver sit bell. and my air bag going off no accident i went to the dealer for dat the reset that for $ 125.00 the tell me next time i have to pay $ 2745.00 to fix the front passenger air bag, if the air bag going off again i wont to no why because my car never been in accident
The airbag warning light illuminated on my dashboard, and when i took it to the dealer, i was told that the ocs system for the passenger seat had failed, and i would need to pay $2500 to replace the cushion seat. this issue appears to be related to an airbag recall involving 2013-2016 altima, as well as other nissan vehicles the passenger air bag is disable due to a sensor malfuntion that is very dangwrkus if you are involved in an accident
The airbag light is blinking on and off. i need to know if there is a recall on the sensor
The passenger side airbag on/off warning light (yellow) on the center of the dash lights up intermittently. this occurs even if someone is sitting in the passenger seat at the time indicating that the airbag is turned off.
My passenger side air bag light or airbag light keeps blinking/flashing for over a year. the nissan dealer wants to charge $160 to look at it. it just started blinking one day.
I love my altima. but recently it's an expensive pain in the neck. recently my airbag lights came on. took it to the mechanic and he said my airbag sensors are not working. since the sensors is in the seat, i have to pay $3,100 to replace the bottom cuahion in the passenger side of my car. my has wasn't in an accident, there was no moisture in my car to cause this problem. i've looked online and airbag sensor on the passenger side of altimas has gotten a lot of complaints. this is not a cheap fix and there's too many nissan owners complaining about their 2009 nisaan altimas passenger airbag sensor failure. nissan need to fix this before someone gets hurt.
Passenger seat cushion sensor has malfunctioned, disarming the entire airbag system. this seat cushion sensor has been replaced 3 years ago by owner, and now a second oem sensor has failed. no injury has occurred but would hate to find out what death or injury could be prevented if nissan or nhtsa would recall this item in 2009 nissan altima with only 62000miles.
My air bags do not work on the driver or passenger side. they have stopped working for some time now. the light is steady bleaking on the dash showing its not working.
My nissan altima was in a 4+ rollover at @65 mph, west bound on i-8 near boulevard california about dawn and just east of sandiego . when a sudden rain downburst, the car hydroplaned and left the road and proceeded to roll 4+ times. i have yet to see the accident report. the front driver and passenger airbags did not deploy and neither did the driver side door bags. the passenger side door bags deployed but the passengers do not recall them airing up. usaa has the vehicle in sandiego somewhere. i feel the passenger side and driver side airbags should have deployed in a multiple side rollover.... the occupants were at huge risk but for the grace and hands of god, they walked away, though i feel that the chp should have forced a 4 young adults to go to the hospital, instead everyone leaving the scene after gathering luggage and such. injuries are unknown, but typical of being rolled at high speed numerous times, being shaken, bruised, skeletal alignment disrupted etc...
The sensor in the front passenger seat of my 2009 nissan altima suddenly stopped working and is no longer able to tell if someone is sitting in the seat to turn on the airbag.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. the contact stated that the air bag warning indicator illuminated consistently without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the sensor failed on the passenger side of the vehicle. the seat bottom assembly needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 66,000.
The passenger side light indicating the airbag is turned off remains on even when someone is sitting in the passenger seat. then the airbag sensor light started flashing. i have to replace the passenger seat to fix.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. the contact stated that the front passenger side air bag warning indicator remained illuminated at all times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with a mass sensor failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. the contact stated that after pressing the push to start button, the vehicle failed to start. in addition, the passenger side air bag warning light flickered. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 70,000. updated 09/06/16*lj updated 09/08/16.*jb
Takata recall. dealership says entire seat needs to be replaced to correct passenger airbag sensor issue. will cost over $1,400 to replace due to shortage in replacement seats. will only warranty for 1 year if replaced.
Passenger occupant sensor has failed. the amber passenger occupant dashboard light always remains on. this means that even with the seat occupied by an appropriate sized adult, the light says the occupant is not being 'sensed'. also, the control panel above the steering wheel has a red flashing airbag light. the nissan dealership says the error code indicates a failure in the passenger seat occupant airbag sensor. my cost is at least $2400 to replace the passenger seat. i am unable to pay that kind of money. i am hoping for a nissan recall or technical bulletin on that make, model and year. i see many other years of this make and model had the issue and the manufacturer fixed them at no cost. that is what i am hoping for. this car has never had an accident. this just happened out of the blue.
Tamara recall i'm a nurse and i was dressed and ready for work upon arrival to my car my fob allowed me to unlock my door but whom i got in and attempted to start my car i noticed i couldn't press my breaks they were tight and steering wheel was also locked. i pressed the push to start button but nothing happened i looked at the information center and only noticed a amber key light up and lock light on around the start button. i have no other way to work and its pass my clear call out time to work but i have to call my don crying because i can't get to work i don't know what's wrong with my car it won't do anything. i'm a nurse my patients depend upon me being there to help them a well as my fellow nurses and doctors!! i had to call a tow truck to take my car to the nissan dealership and i was told it was the steering column lock. i asked him how much would it cost to repair he said 800 dollars. i'm a single mother with a son who is a senior in high school it's his spring break week, i have pictures, class rings, announcement, cap and gown, prom etc to pay for but i need my car to get to work!! i don't want favors, want what's right!! a 6yr/ unlimited mileage is a cheap way out. nissan knew and knows about this manufacturer defect but still out these cars on the road not really caring or concern about what the results could be.. i've been a nurse for over 10 yrs, so does people have be stranded be it old or young with medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes or even someone who requires use of oxygen to breathe/live to die and family members sue nissan before a recall is issued? prevention saves more lives and its a lot less expensive. thank god for all these petitions pages with 100s and 1000 of signatures along with people sharing their stories about this unfair too off to people!! i expect a class action lawsuit soon.
The airbag warning light illuminated on my dashboard, and when i took it to the dealer, i was told that the ocs system for the passenger seat had failed, and i would need to pay $3500 to replace the entire seat. this issue appears to be related to an airbag recall involving 2013-2016 altimas, as well as other nissan vehicles. *tr
Takata recall - although my car has not yet been affected by he recall i believe that it will be. the passenger airbag sensor is faulty which affects the amber dashboard passenger airbag light from working properly which therefore will not allow the airbag to deploy if in an accident. or more so allowing the airbag to deploy at any given time without being in an accident. this sensor disarms the whole airbag system from working properly which is a serious safety hazard.
First issue was with passenger seat airbag sensor. my wife or other passenger would be sitting in passenger seat and the sensor in the seat would not work and therefore the passenger airbag was disabled, putting passenger safety at risk. second issue. had to replace tire pressure monitoring sensor due to leaking tire pressure. have had to replace 2 out of 4 so far in the last year. causes low tire pressure and unsafe driving condition.
I haven't been happy since i had my car, which i purchased in 2012 with 45, 0000 miles at the time of purchase. i complained about so many things every other month i was going to get it checked. when you hit a bump you can here something loose underneath the front end of course i seemed like the only crazy one hearing the noise. then when i took it back again i was told the sway bar arms need to be replaced when this was a problem when i first purchased the car they just ignored now my warranty is expired . the steering lock was one issue and i was told through the dealership that there was not a recall on my car. until i contacted you guys i was told that there was a recall. now when i drive the car at a certain speed it starts wining and slows down to 60 mph with the gas pedal to the floor i am furious because i was traveling on the interstate 4 different times going out of town and this happened. someone could have ran into the back of me. i changed out the air filter thinking that may have been the problem but no it continued. also sometimes the car wouldn't start i was told by nissan i needed a new battery and i had it checked by someone else they said the battery was fine. the passenger sensor light stays on when an adult is sitting there. now my sister 2013 nissan altima transmission is gone and she only had the car almost two years and we were complaining about the issue with the car going a certain speed and making noise. i went to nissan and they told me my car can be put on the machine, but i would have to pay to have it checked. too many people having the same problems with these cars.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. while driving 15 mph, the contact's vehicle was struck by another vehicle. the air bags failed to deploy. a police report was filed. the contact sustained injuries to the neck and back and was transported to the hospital for a respiratory issue. the vehicle was destroyed and towed to the dealer. the failure mileage was 129,000.
On october 31st the red airbag light started flashing on my dashboard. i took the vehicle into my nearest dealership on november 13th to complete a diagnostic. i was informed that it was that there is no signal coming from the passenger occupancy sensor for the airbag and that in the event of an accident the airbag may or may not deploy. also it was noted on the invoice that there is no sign of any damage to the wiring. of course my vehicle is not under recall and no longer under warranty. my dashboard is also melting and the material that is used causes extreme glare. so not only do i have a large glare across my window which increases my risk of an accident but possibly no airbag to boot. i contacted nissan since this exact same issue has been found in other years of my model and recalled. all nissan has continued to do is say my vehicle is no longer under warranty and that they will forward my complaint for review. *tr
Help, a melting and shiny sticky dash on my 2009 altima generates a tremendous glare on the windshield and prevents me from clearly viewing the highway in front during the day. it also distors the viewing during the night due to the on-comming vehicles headlights. it is highly serious and dangerous driving safety hazard problem that could/will "it is just a timing issue" cause an accident, the dash can't be clean and is melting. it is also minimazing the value of the vehicle. please advise if there is solution or recall from nissan to fix this problem. *tr
The passenger airbag warning light stays on at all times, and now this week the supplemental airbag warning light has been flashing. i took it to a mechanic and they tell me that the passenger airbag is malfunctioning. if the car was in a collision and someone was seated in the front passenger seat, the airbag would not deploy. i have taken the car to the nissan dealership, while this car was under warranty with same complaint, but they could find nothing wrong. funny, how 2013-2014 altimas are being recalled for this exact problem, but the earlier model years have not been. *tr
The dash board melts, it creates a glare in the windshield when driving which makes it hard to see on coming traffic.
Traveling on the highway at about 70 mph, the air bag indicator went off signaling that there was no air bag. the next day, it went off signaling or indicating that there was no air bag, but only on the passenger side.
When my husband gets in the passenger seat the supplemental air bag warning light flashes. i had my husband get out the car, and then i did he reset of the airbag, and the light stayed off for 8 minutes until i had my husband get back in the car, as soon as he got in the car, both airbag lights came on. when researching it, i found the same thing happened to another nissan which was recalled but not for my year of 2009 nissan altima. *tr
Throughout the duration of owning this car, the passenger airbag light will appear as "deactivated" when there is an adult female (weighing 150 lbs) sitting in the passenger seat. the approximate date and vehicle mileage are unknown but it has happened on multiple occasions. *tr
Air bag deactivate on the passenger side even when someone is sitting in the seat. this happens on and off many times. i think they should of recalled more years. *tr
Son was hit on the right side and front end and the air bag did not deploy on the steering column he was killed. *tr. updated 11/03/14 *bf updated 7/9/2015*js ...updated08/20/15 *bf updated 08/23/2017*ct updated 09/30/15 *js updated 12/30/15*lj
My 2009 nissan altima coupe' dash is melting. a car dealership told me when the dashboard is melting the airbag on the passenger side will not deploy correctly in a crash. i also can not see out of the front windshield because the shiny sticky mess throws a blinding glare while driving. nissan will not help me. this is a problem with the product used for the dashboard. *tr
The airbag warning light comes on, meaning that the passenger airbag is disarmed, while my wife is sitting in the seat. this means if the car was in an accident, the airbag won't deploy and could cause more injury or death. there is a recent nissan recall for altima 2013-2014 for this same defect. the same issue is plaguing my 2009 nissan altima. *tr
My 2009 nissan altima dash is melting. dash has cracks as well near the front passenger air bags and near the instrument cluster. read in forums that the car dealerships say that when the dash has cracks and is melting air bags could not deploy correctly. nissan will not replace dash due to the car being out of warranty and expect me to buy a new one when this seems like a manufacturing issue not taken into account as part of the design. *tr
I own 2009 altima coupe se. the passenger airbag sensor does not work properly. sometimes something as small as an ipad will activate the airbag. as where other times my 125 wife will have it turn off. something needs to be done as i am seeing that a multitude of people are having this issue. *tr
I was traveling westbound on the interstate when a chevrolet silverado truck cut into my lane and stopped abruptly. i did not have time to react and rear-ended the vehicle. my car ended up under his bumper with major front end damage. my bumper was dragging when i pulled to the side, both headlights were broken, the hood was damaged, and the radiator and transmission were leaking. the grill was smashed in and was behind the front bumper. i was traveling at least 40 miles per hour. i bought the car brand new in 2009 and it had less than 40,000 miles on it. this is the first accident i have ever been in. the other vehicle left the scene of the accident. i was taken to the hospital for head and neck injuries. the airbags did not deploy. the police, fire, and tow truck driver all said the airbags should have deployed. *tr
My 2009 nissan altima coup v6 edition frequently turns off the passenger front airbag when someone is sitting in the seat. the person weighs over 125 lbs and should be enough for the seat to sense an adult in it. for some reason it intermittently will flash the dash board light indicating that the airbag will not go off during an accident because the occupant is too light. i have taken in into the dealer on 2 separate occasions and they have told me the sensor and airbag unit are functioning, and there is nothing that can fix the problem. *tr
While sitting in the passenger seat riding with my wife, i noticed the passenger air bag lit meaning i was not protected in the event of a crash and i weigh 180 lbs. i don't see a recall for this but i am going to call dealer monday and check on this. my son has also reported this to me as well and he weighs about 160 lbs. *tr
On february 21, 2015, while traveling 300+ miles out of town my 2009 nissan altima failed due to the broadly known issue of "steering column lockout," in which the car will not start and requires a tow to the dealer for expensive repairs. i am requesting the nhtsa launch or expand an investigation of this known issue and provide a public warning to drivers of nissan vehicles. the car had regular service on february 10, 2015, at mossy nissan oceanside, ca and i was told "safe to drive" for my trip out of state. it wasn't, the dealer doesn't check for this well known issue during service. nissan refuses to issue a full recall, instead extending the warranty to 1,000,000 miles or 5 years. in this way nissan profits from repairs of cars failing after 5 years yet before or after 1,000,000 miles when the car strands drivers, and because not a full recall there is no physical evidence for an nhtsa investigation. nissan does not have the controls to know which vehicles will fail, as evidenced by my and multiple pages of identical complaints filed with the nhtsa. i and my family do not accept the multiple apologies from nissan, and there is no way for nissan to make up for me missing my daughter's event. nissan's actions indicate they are not interested in passenger safety. this nissan has stranded me 5 times since purchased new in 2009 from mossy nissan oceanside, an authorized nissan dealer. regarding passenger safety, also the airbag system has failed to turn on to protect passengers. on airbag failure, nissan tested the airbag on my vehicle with a male passenger and stated they didn't see an issue, misleading myself, customers, and the nhtsa by testing with a male passenger over 120 pounds yet publishing results as applying to both genders - a female passenger will likely need to be over 150 pounds to be protected by the nissan passenger airbag system. *tr
