We have classified the 80 complaints from 2009 Nissan Altima about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
On more then one occasion when driving on the freeway for about 45 min. the acceleration speed drops to about 40 mph. and when going on hills its even worse. this has been going on for some time now, but now i have a second altima that is having very similar issues. after sitting on the side of the freeway for a hour, the car returns to normal. this can not be a normal problem, i have searched and found that a number of people have had very similar issues and in fact i received a letter stating that 2014-2018 nissans where having acceleration issues. ( i have attached the letter) i have 2 cars now that have the same issue and i can not afford to fix them, especially if i am not 100% sure what the correction is. i have also attached copies of others that have the same issues, and you will see that some have tried to fix but get different responses on the fix. please help!! thanks
When on the road and goin up a small hill the transmission looses power don't want to go, loose lots of power
The car losses acceleration while in the highway. it appears to happen when it's hot and there's no warning and thus could be fatal.
My altima has 257k miles. i was driving home from a friend's house and the car just died on my street. the engine made a whining sound and would not go over 5 mph. luckily i was able to coast the car down the hill to my house. the car has been well maintained and i am replacing the cvt transmission for the second time. the last time i replaced it was 3 years ago in 2016. most of my mileage is hwy miles. i have read numerous complaints online regarding the crappy cvt transmission in the altima. the dealer is putting in my 3rd transmission today and only guaranteeing a 1 year / 12000 mile warranty. this does not sound like they are backing their product. from all that i have read and experienced, the car is a total safety issue losing speed in warm weather on long trips that could result in serious accidents. could there be a recall coming?
Driving the highway 75 miles hour and have the accelerator not response. was told cvt transmission overheating going into safe mood causing vehicle to slow and accelerator not responding. barely pulling off the highway and waiting to have control again. was told that a radiator for the transmission was needed. scared to drive.
I am experiencing two severe safety issues with my 2009 nissan altima coupe. 1. when i am driving on the highway, after about an hour, my transmission will not allow the car to go the speed limit or accelerate. no matter how hard i press on the gas pedal, the car will not shift, loses power and gets progressively worse the farther i drive. i had to pull off the highway for fear that someone would hit me because no matter how hard i tried to accelerate, the car would only go about 40 mph. 2. the dashboard is literally melting causing a blinding glare when the sun (during the day) or other headlights (during the night or rain) hit it...it creates a blinding glare making it impossible to see. both of these issues, the transmission and dash make driving extremely hazardous.
Email to jack danielson from constituent regarding their grandson 2009 nissan altima 2.5s transmission problems. *ld the consumer stated while being driven, the vehicle went into fail safe mode. the consumer was informed the vehicle was built without a transmission cooler and a service bulletin was issued to put one in the vehicle. the dealership would not honor the service bulletin. *js *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. while the contact's son was driving at an unknown speed, the engine stalled. the vehicle was taken to jeffery nissan (30800 gratiot ave, roseville, mi 48066, 586-510-1378) where it was diagnosed that the transmission failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 131,000.
Nothing but problems with this car since i purchased it. had to replace all tire sensors, speed sensors, coils, front passenger tire rod, the ctv transmission, and the trunk leaks into the trunk and the tail light's. i have repaired all these things out of my own pocket.i have been stranded several times, i have almost been hit, and have had the car towed. the dash has become sticky and everything sticks to it. it produces a glare on the wondow which makes it hard to see.the engine experiences loss of power and no mechanic can pinpoint the problem. i do not drive it much since i have purchased it. this car should be a lemon or recalled. the problems keep coming.
Vehicle was in motion going 55mph on highway. suddenly started to lose power and car began to decelerate no matter how much gas i gave it. i had my 3 kids and wife in the car. we're lucky i was able to somehow coast off to the side of the road and wait for a tow. this happened more than once on local roads.
I have a nissan altima just bought 2016. when driving 20 min or more when you come to a stop about 3 seconds after. you feel a shift or jolt, in the engine the harmonic balancer or timing chain. i was driving 70 down i45 busy traffic, as audial and all a sudden my car starts loosing power and i was almost hit in the rear by a mac truck. when i was safely at a stop, i killed it and it cranked back up with half the power. 1500 rpms
Takata recall transmissions on the nissan altima. driving home from work and my car stalls, put my foot all the way down on the pedal and nothing, extreme safety hazard, could of easily been hit by someone going full speed from behind. i was at a red light waiting for it to turn green and when i was getting ready to go nothing was happening. had to be towed home. found out that nissan altimas have this very common problem with the transmission and takata won't take responsibility and issue a recall. guess they don't care if they leave someone's kids potentially orphaned 🤷🏻‍♀️
When it's really hot outside and i drive for more than 3 hours my car starts to lose power. when holding the gas pedal down to the floor much car will not accelerate. i have to stop and let the car sit for 20 to 30 minutes before i can drive. the temperature gauge doesn't ever say that the car is hot though. this has happened multiple times now. each time on a hot day after driving approximately
I purchased my car in 2012 shortly after purchasing the car i noticed something didn't feel quite right i called the nissan service dept and explained the issue they assured me everything was okay but then in 2016 i complained to nissan about the whining noise again and when traveling on the interstate how my car would just slow down with no warning causing the tractor trailer traveling behind me to think quickly and jump into another lane or else i probably would not be alive to be writing you. the next incident was after i exited off of the interstate and stopped at the stop sign once i begin to accelerate my car stalled in the middle of the street causing a car coming around the curve to quickly exit onto the interstate to keep from hitting me. when i explained all of this to nissan they already knew about this issue and i said why wasn't this something you send out to consumers because if you already know then this isn't the first incident. at the time i reported this i had 119,876 miles on my car the rep proceeded to tell me i was past the extended warranty i said what extended warranty i knew nothing about this and never received anything in reference to this. needless to say nissan never followed back up with me and i reached out to them again recently about this same issue and told them nobody ever followed up and i was almost hit once again due to losing power in the middle of the interstate. took the car in to a nissan service depart explained the issue once again they said oh there is a service bulletin on the engine but this had nothing to do with the transmission but assured me this was the issue needless to say two days later and $390 later the problem still isn't fixed. this is a safety hazard and one day may cause fatalities. this should be a recall for those vehicles under the warranty. they have lawsuits. http://www.nissanproblems.com/trends/cvt/
Transmission failed. took to dealership for repair. they took a transmission fliuid sample and sent to nissan for testing. nissan denied warranty claiming the fluid was contaminated. they want $5400 for repair. what are my options?
Transmission failed. will not go forward or reverse. was in motion driving out of my driveway to work. thank goodness it did not happen in heavy traffic. nissan has denied the extended warranty.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. while driving various speeds, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the catalytic converter and transmission sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 177,000.
Tranmission stop working and leak just bought and now 2 years later went out
P0776 codes populates after 02 sensors were changed. it's the solenoid b pressure line located in the valve body. it affects the car to the point we're it's undriveable and loses power. car will not go over 3000rpms if it does it causes the car to go into lymp mode. there's been several complaints regarding the issue and nissan has yet to make any effort to rectify the issue. nobody has $3000 to replace the whole transmission, when it's only a little component that needs to be replaced and not the entire tranny. rectify the issue and stop selling lemon cars with horrible parts.
Traveling on a ca freeway the transmission suddenly loses power due to transmission overheating and had to pull over on the side until it cooled down. the car had 85,000 miles and was covered under warranty and so a new transmission was installed. 2 years and 60,000 miles later while on the freeway, the transmission completely fails putting the driver in danger of trying to pull to the side of the freeway. the transmission was completely destroyed and no longer covered under warranty.
The cvt transmission has given me major problems after driving for 60+ miles. up until then it does fine just as it has always done around town driving. after about an hour and half of driving the vehicles stops allowing you to go over 40 mph and i found that this is called 'limp mode' which is to protect the transmission. the problem is that the car is not even getting over heated whatsoever at all. i had the transmission serviced by nissan and thought this would fix the issue but no such luck. when you have a car that you got brand new and have taken care of it and low mileage you should be able to drive somewhere that is more than an hour away. my car is unable to be taken on any road trip whatsoever. i have had myself in some unfortunate situations due to this problem. i had the vehicle serviced and was told it was good to go on a road trip the next day as i had explained the situation to them and was assured that i could safely make the trip. low and behold sixty miles out of town i could only go 40mph on a highway with a 75 speed limit. nissan dealership was not anywhere near me. i was 100 miles away from anywhere i could get help which is all nissan told me to do was bring it in to a dealership! i did just that before my trip to fix this issue and it wasn't fixed. what am i to do?
Cvt transmission failure, manufacturer extended warranty to 10 years, 120k miles because they used a bad product. my vehicle has 140,000 miles so nissan declined to cover repair cost. my vehicle showed no sign of issues until it suddenly wouldn't engage at a stop light on a busy highway. it is frustrating that a manufacture this size pushes a known issue under the rug instead of recalling the defective vehicles.
This vehicle will not operate if it's driven for more than 45 minutes at highway speeds. the power train goes into a neutral mode. it then requires a pull over onto a freeway to allow it to cool down for at least 30 minutes before the vehicle will work. it does not matter what the ambient temperature is outside. when driving at speeds lower than 50 miles per hour it does not have this problem. per the nissan mechanics this is a known problem with the cvt and the only way to fix it is to completely replace the cvt. we have tried a transmission cooler but that does not work. this is very dangerous as it requires the vehicle to be stopped and turned off for 20 minutes which can be a big safety problem as it would require sitting on the side of the freeway or, if able, sitting in the vehicle in an unsafe neighborhood.
Transmission failed after 143k miles; violent shaking while transmission was engaged
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. while idling, the vehicle was shifted into park due to a crash and heavy traffic. as the traffic began to move, the contact attempted to shift the vehicle out of park, but the shifter jammed. as a result, the vehicle was involved in a rear end collision with another vehicle. the failure occurred without warning. a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed to a collision shop; however, it had not been determined whether the vehicle was destroyed. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. there was one injury that required medical attention. the failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
Driving home from work late at night, just got off the freeway and the car made a loud sound and then stopped moving. the check engine light then came on. the engine continued to run but the car would not move. there were no warning signs prior to this event that there was a problem. fortunately, this incident did not occur 5 minutes earlier while i was still on the freeway. the car had been into the dealer for new brakes and change in transmission fluid 3 weeks prior to this event. after the event the dealer allegedly found metal belt pieces in the cvt oil pan. the cost of the repair would be $4600, in excess of the blue book value of the car. the car had been serviced at nissan dealers since the time it was purchased. it was purchased with the expectation from the sales staff that the car would go at least 200,000 miles. car had approximately 124000 miles. nissan agreed to pay 50% of the cost of the new transmission. however, i chose not to repair the car as the remaining amount is cost prohibitive and i have little confidence in nissan products and their service. it appears transmission problems are common in the altima and nissan does not stand behind their product or try to correct the issues. the dealers are not capable of diagnosing the problem without an additional diagnosis charge of $135.
When driving the car down the highway it fails to shift into the next gear. you push down on the gas pedal and the rpms go higher but the vehicle doesn't pick up in speed. it actually decreases as you are going up a hill. when i took it to a dealership, they told me that it sounds like it is the ecm and that i was [xxx] out of luck because that make/model doesn't have a recall on it. though i found a service bulletin for technicians on how to do a ecm replacement procedure for all 2004 and later - nissan altimas. so - they know that it is a defect in the automobile. my mom has a 2015 nissan altima and it was doing the same thing and they recalled her vehicle. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
While driving at highway speeds the vehicle goes into limp mode and the speed drastically decreases and loses all power! there is no warnings.
Coming home from florida in 2013, the car lost all power going down the interstate. we were able to push the gas pedal all the way to the floor and the car would not go any faster. once we stopped and let the car sit for 15-20 minutes, we were able to go another 100-150 miles before it happened again. this has also happened twice driving home from murfreesboro. we went to florida for vacation this year and the same thing happened on the way there and on the way home. after doing some research and talking to some mechanics, we have been told that this is not the first time they have heard about this and there are numerous complaints on the internet about this same problem
What happens when i go up. hill i lose power cant drive until the tranmission cools down
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle lost power and decelerated. the rpms were between 4 and 5. the contact coasted the vehicle over to the side of the road, placed the vehicle in park, and waited a few minutes. when the contact began driving again, the vehicle started to pull and hesitate, failed to shift gears, and the transmission made a whining noise and failed to accelerate. the contact called a local dealer (nissan altima in schertz, tx) and was informed that he would had to pay for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 157,000.
Takata recall can't drive too far cuz losing power after hour....we cant go to family vacation on long tripif its lower than $200 that's ok but if it's cvt transmission it's way over my budget it's cost over $5,000......i look over on google n seen a lots of ppl had this problem.....
Transmission overheats whenever the vehicle is driven for an extended period (1 hour+) in warm weather (80 degrees+). vehicle immediately loses power, with rpms never reaching above 2000, drastically reducing acceleration and speed. driving on a highway, this creates a serious danger. this has been happening for over two years now.
I bought the car at roughly 54k miles. approximately around 62k, the air conditioner stopped blowing cold air. i work on residential ac units. my pressures are equalized. i bypassed the pressure switch temporarily during diagnostics to see if the pressure switch was the issue. the problem continued when bypassed.the issue is either the clutch specifically or the compressor is bad. here recently, i have noticed a "jerking" motion when attempting to accelerate. obviously, this will be the shift solenoid or the cvt. cvt fluid is good. these issues have been going on with 2009 altimas for over 8 years now. why hasn't there been a recall? what is required to get a recall in effect? there have been multiple complaints regarding cvts, start/stop procedures, and ac problems, but not one recall concerning this has happened. nissan refuses to help.
Transmission broke at 119,000, was fixed, just under extended warranty. began whining, was told it needed a transmission cooler, installed for $1,000+. now, at 149,000 transmission has broken again. it was in motion when it acceleration quit on a city street.
Several things are wrong or gone bad. nissan suppose to be awesome vehicles with good reputation but tell you if i had known or could have for seen all the trouble, wow. 1. have had problems with steering wheel locking, ok that was fixed it has done it again. module is bad. 2. had to replace transmission very costly 3000, and was told that in a couple yrs would need it again. push button start is part of the locking issue so why is this not fixed from what i have read it's an ongoing problem, actually the same issues with my 2009 altima is exactly what thousands of others are going through, why is this not fixed why are we all still having these problems, my car is taken all the way to nissan dealership in louisville ky. oh about 45-to an hour away, for all regular maintaining, all the way down to the oil changes. like i said nissan suppose to be superior vehicles this has been a nightmare, i can't afford to pay the price of fixing the car every time i turn around. trade in on it sucks, resale privately does too. something needs done, how many hundreds of thousands of people have the same problems with their altima
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. after the vehicle was started, it failed to shift out of park and the intelligent key system warning indicator illuminated the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that unknown parts related to the steering lock mechanism needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 88,000. updated 05/10/17*lj *cn
Issues with steering wheel which leads to the car not turning on at all .
As i was leaving work on friday night at about 11:35pm when i got to my car, i found myself stuck in a parking lot trying to turn on my ignition. the car didn't give me no warning as the dashboard gave me a symbol of the word "key" display with a key below it. i would push the brake and the start button and the car would not make a sound. i had to get my car towed to my house in order to remove it from the parking lot. as i was going through the manual i found out that it was the steering ignition lock that was causing this issue with the ignition. i'm a 24 year old pregnant woman and this is really unsafe. i was reading online and it said that nissan gave a 6 year extended warranty for this issue but i never received a notice from the dealer while i was paying it off and now that the issue has popped out being 2017 the dealer is telling me that the warranty has expired in 2015 and it will cost me $1,200 to fix the issue. *tr
I was at a gas station in a unsafe area (high crime) and my car would not start back up. my car went into "lock mode", after research the steering lock can malfunction on the 2009 nissan altima. looks like the warranty used to be 8 years and it was changed to 6 years. this would have been the 8th year for me. i was terrified being stuck with no ride. it took me an hour to find someone to pick me up. i had to leave the car overnight. if this is a common issue why was the warranty shortened? or why is there not a lifetime warranty on this part? being stranded for an issue that is the manufacturers fault is unacceptable. i have never been more scared in my life than i was last night. i sat in my car waiting for a tow. i am a female and i had multiple men approach my car. terrified. unsafe. this problem could have been much much worse but it needs to be addressed and under warranty.
Parked in garage, wouldn't start, steering lock system was not working so the engine didn't recognize the push button start, had to have it towed to auto mechanic to have the part replaced for $1,000 plus towing! nissan stopped using this part in 2010 so they must know it was a bad part. i could have been anywhere when this happened and been stranded.
The steering column recall was repaired, but warranty was off. had to pay out of pocket. automatic transmission stopped and recall on it was off. automobile was in motion when it slowed to a crawl on the highway
First problem is stationary while parked. car was bumped by another while parked and steering column locked up. it happened again without being bumped for unknown reason. had to tow to garage to unlock. has happened twice now. expensive to fix . second problem is while in motion on highways. on hot day, during longer trips where uphill climbing is present, the engine starts to lose power going up hill and manual states it is a built in safety feature to protect engine however this is a big safety hazard because you have to pull over and let the car cool down for a while before driving again. this has now happened to my family 3 times.
Automatic transmission problem: the altima's automatic transmission will not down shift after the car has been at highway speeds for an extended time (>1.5 hours). this has happened to me multiple times driving on the new york state thruway on long road trips. the altima is in overdrive, traveling at 65 mph. then once i am driving up a fairly steep hill the car will not downshift to account for the incline. the car slows down from 65 mph to low speeds (e.g. 40 mph) and the engine will not go above 2000 rpm. the car does not come out of overdrive (6th gear). attempts at pressing the accelerator all the way down or manually shifting to a lower gear has no effect. the only way to get the car to shift normally again once this happens is to pull over and turn off the car and restart it. this probably indicates a reboot on the transmission's computer is needed. nissan has looked at the car a few times and has not been able to come up with a solution. this is a very dangerous problem as it can lead to a rear end accident.
Drove 40 miles to a shopping center one evening. returning to car a signal on dashboard relayed that my car did not recognize my car key. car would not start. no way to bypass the push button start. due to the lateness of the hour and the fact we were flying overseas the next day, i had to have car towed to my home. manual said if car started i could drive it home but needed to be taken to dealer for a safety check. upon googling this problem i found many, many people have had the same problem. tow truck driver said this was a very common problem with nissans, thus people needing his services. seems that we really should be calling tow drivers to see which vehicles are the least towed.
Steering lock 48700-9n00b went out no warranty nissan dealership said. we did not get any information on this issue. all they have been doing is giving us the runaround said we could bring it in and it would cost us $1k dollars after parts and labor. this is there issue don't see how they are not responsible to fix the issue. they said there was a warranty on the transmission and the noise while we drive don't know if i will ever buy an nissan again after not receiving any information on recalls.
First time 2013 occured on freeway about 3 hrs into drive. while on the freeway at 75 mph the car began loosing power n speed quickly. thought cars were going to slam into car. pulled over turned off n placed key in charging compartment. 15 mins or so turned on n ran fine after that. 2015 on busy freeway began loosing power n speed. pulled over placed key again then worked fine. 2016 its happened twice again on freeway going uphill speed dropped quickly. i thought semi-truck was going to slam. scarred to death manage to pull out at 35 mph from 75mph. disconnected battery let sit 15 mins worked okay loosing power to 60mph. following day same thing but nothing helped to reset and speed dropped as low as 20-25mph and had to use manual feature to keep going. auto tran stopped functioning. now tran was not shifting. i'd have to ease up on throttle push it down to try n get some power. very scarry when on freway.
My 2009 nissan altima vin number [xxx] has many safety issues that are not being reported with my vin number. the struts, steering lock box{which i paid 900.00 to repair], abs speed control sensor, engine oil coolant and most of all the cvt transmission have went out on my car and nissan will not help me repair. so i am forced to attempt this last try before joining a class action law suit. i have only had the car 2 years and now i am out 9000.00 and the repairs are more than the car is worth. it would take too long to give detail about all the events so i pray someone at nissan is decent enough to stand behind their product and make this right i am a single mom of three and ride less . i have contacted att. general [xxx] and bbb. my car is at [xxx] my number is [xxx] my name is [xxx] i have opened 5 cases and been denied. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. while driving home at approximately 30 mph, the vehicle stalled and shut down. the check engine light illuminated. the vehicle restarted and was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column lock fractured. the component was recalled and repaired previously; therefore, the manufacturer was not responsible for the repairs. the dealer also diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the manufacture was made aware of the failure, but did not offer assistance. the failure mileage was 78,479.
Vehicle's transmission begins to whine and loses power within a hour of highway driving on a hot day. vehicle cannot accelerate after, thus creating a hazard towards other vehicles. nissan wont cover costs associated with this problem if it is out of warranty. most altima models from 2007 - 2009 are experiencing the same problem. i am surprised their isnt a recall for this particular issue.
