Problems with 2009 Nissan Altima UNKNOWN OR OTHER

On average, the 2009 Nissan Altima starts to “feel” problems with the UNKNOWN OR OTHER and its various aspects after 93 097 miles.

Recently reported UNKNOWN OR OTHER problems on 2009 Nissan Altima

On more then one occasion when driving on the freeway for about 45 min. the acceleration speed drops to about 40 mph. and when going on hills its even worse. this has been going on for some time now, but now i have a second altima that is having very similar issues. after sitting on the side of the freeway for a hour, the car returns to normal. this can not be a normal problem, i have searched and found that a number of people have had very similar issues and in fact i received a letter stating that 2014-2018 nissans where having acceleration issues. ( i have attached the letter) i have 2 cars now that have the same issue and i can not afford to fix them, especially if i am not 100% sure what the correction is. i have also attached copies of others that have the same issues, and you will see that some have tried to fix but get different responses on the fix. please help!! thanks

The dashboard and steering wheel on my 2009 nissan altima are melting due to the high temperatures in the cabin. when the vehicle is in the sun, the top surface of the dashboard melts, and restricts the forward visibility by causing a glare on the windshield. this makes it extremely difficult to see objects that are close to the vehicle in the sun.

My grandson and i were taking a 2 and 1/2 hour trip to visit family i was driving about an hour on the freeway going on an uphill and i began to hear a whining sound and my speed started to decrease from 70 then to 60 and it started to decrease more so i then got off the freeway turned off the car and waited about a half an hour i then decided that it would not be safe to continue my trip but the location that i was in was not a safe area for me and my grandson to wait for a tow truck i then decided to head back one exit down where they would be more lighting the car drove fine i was able to pick up speed with no problem but again i thought it would not be safe to continue driving so i then call the tow truck and how does tow back home what i did notice was when i accelerate the gas pedal the engine did not rev at a higher level nor did the speed increase but to my little knowledge with cars it was telling me it wasn't the transmission slipping, pressing the accelerater and not hearing your engine accelerate but car is still moving but lower speed just did not make sense to me. this could have caused an accident it was mid afternoon on a freeway that commuters often use i was lucky that the off ramp was near for me to exit.

After driving approximately 1.5 hours on a family trip and on the interstate my car slowed all the way down to from speeds of 60 -70mph to barely not moving at all. clearly this frighten my entire family. after resting on the side of the interstate for almost an hour the car resumed but started to repeat the same pattern. it also barely pulled up a hill. this car has done this before and the nissian dealership stated that it could need a tune up. so before going on the family vacation listed above i had a tune up and oil change done but guess what. the problem still exists.

The dashboard on is melting.

Takata recall cvt transmission. was coming on highway going 55 the speed drop wasn't shifting gears anymore i was down to 10 had to gonon side of road my car starts but will not move no more then 10 speed took to my nissan dealer and they told me it was my cvt transmission that it seems that a lot of those cars go out and when they do it's very costly that we should just buy a new one i had just purchased that vehicle maybe two years before this at happen i left my nissan it's a well family car but it sucks that the cvt transmission can cause it to go down the drain i kept my car and well shape with fluids and always maintenance on it for this to happen i still own the car because of how much i love it i want to get it fix but everywhere i go everyone tells me not to because the cost its going to take to fix it your better off buying a new one .... i just feel why should i have to buy a new car of this one was up and runing good and i didnt everything i coupd to keep up on it for the cvt to go out on me like this ..... the car has a good body no rust not issues at all besides the cvt transmission i had got the car in 2017 and it went out already i paid about 7,500 for it ....

The car only goes 20 miles of hour on hwy and it stalls if your at a red lightning or stop sign and want hardly climb hills or mountain and it smells like something burning please help me the only car i have to drive with 3 kids

Without warning our nissan altima 2009 would not start. upon my research i figured out the steering wheel lock mechanism which is part of the anti-theft system is faulty. the temporary fix is to bang on the mechanism with a wrench until the car starts.

The dashboard is melting and is causing such a glare, during the day but also at night making it unsafe to drive.

My dashboard on my car is melting. i have had it looked and it. it is so shiny it is blinding me while i drive during the day.

I was about to take my daughter (a 10 yr old child) suffering from an allergic reaction to the children's hospital, when the vehicle did not turn on. my nissan altima 2009 (sedan) had been used without issues just the day before and i had parked it at home. it was parked and when i tried turning it on, it did not read the key, the ignition did not even notice there was a key, the steering was locked. we were left stranded unable to turn on the vehicle and go to the hospital and get treated asap. i had to get a cab with the sick child and come back from the hospital the same way. the days that followed, i also had to see her doctor and the car still did not turn on. finally, the vehicle was towed to the dealership and they told me it has a steering lock problem and they see this often in that model(!). i looked online and was amazed to find several similar complaints! i saw nissan is aware of this issue on this model and had a campaign but my vin was not among the supposed vehicles under the coverage this is a major safety issue, being a woman (and even worse, a woman with a minor) i was unable to use a vehicle that is otherwise mechanically completely sound (it had just been serviced not even 2 weeks before!), this car has very few miles, it was the last thing i was expecting in a stressful situation that could have gone majorly wrong. luckily my daughter's allergic reaction was tended to at the hospital in time because i took a car service and i don't live in a rural area, but i don't want to think about what could happen to other people or even to myself if i were to be in a remote location or in a perilous situation and not able to turn on my car and use it. i am now very wary and worried that (once corrected) this issue will again take place. this is a hazardous situation, though it does not happen while driving, it does put the owner's safety at plausible risk.

I have had the car 2-3 years now and the tires have loosened up on me while driving, the car stopped running and had to do some kind of steering column lock work, it is rusting on the drivers side floor panel, and the transmission is out of it which happen on the road at work with two of my clients. which the clients both are diagnosed with a disability. very frightening when you make a left turn and your car stops infront of oncoming cars. that could have been a major tradegy.if only nadsan would have fixed that transmission problem many years ago when they were made aware of the problem( malfunction) and nissan will not budge one bit to help fix the transmission unless i pay diagnostics and a transmission bill of over 5400.00. who ever heard of a transmission costing that much money? they are the worst and i will never purchase a nissan ever again. thanks for your consideration.

Dashboard is shiny and looks like melting. the shiny dashboard causes things to stick to it and has unknown sticky substance 'melted' on it. this causes glares and difficulty seeing out of front wind shield when driving- primarily while driving towards the sun. this has been happening for 3 years and getting worse in the texas sun.

My dashboard is melting causing visibility issues due to glare.

The dash has started melting as i am from texas, where the heat is intense in the summers. i don't always have the option to park in a garage like at work 8 hours a day in a parking lot. i had laid a file on my dash and it stuck too the dash. i thought that was very unusual. when i am driving in the evening the sun reflects off of it so bad i have to pull over sometimes. the way that they put the windshield they set the window off of the dash being the bottom or base. my windshield is leaking when it rains, cause my dash is melting and not supporting the windshield at the base.

The dashboard in my nissan is literally liquifying over the last 7 months. this appears to be known issue that resulted in class action lawsuit in fl against nissan that was won for the plantiffs. there is facebook group for nissan melting dash boards and a news station covered the story: https://www.click2houston.com/consumer/drivers-want-sticky-dashboards-fixed i contacted nissan, who referred me to our local dealership and they documented issue and i was ulitmately referred to cameron, a regional nissan qa representative. i was told at tht time that nothing can be done. i did very clearly (and politely) describe the safety concern as the melting dashboard causes a horrific glare on the windshield. i do indeed understand that the car is out of warranty but given the safety hazard piece, i was hoping that nissan would stand by thier products in this case and consider generating a recall to address the issue. toyota had a similar issue and offered full replacement.

Dash board recall - i bought my altima use back in 2016. i recently took it in to get it serviced and asked about what can be done about the dash board which the agent further told me that their was a claim last year for the dash board issue, but i never received any notice about the issue until i brought it in 04/13/2018. the dash board and gear shift are both sticky and causing harm when driving. nissan nor the third party consultant never reached out by sending s mail that their parts was defective and should take the vehicle in for inspection.

Dashboard is melting and causing a glare to my windshield which makes it hard to visibly see when the sun is out. i dont understand why my dashboard is melting but it definitely causing a problem for me to see clearly.

Car caught on fire completely totaled. it was driven less than 2 miles parked and shut off. within 15 minutes the car was completely engulfed in flames.

Takata recall my steering lock just went out on my 2009 nissan altima i just purchased this car last year however i did not know it had an extended warranty up until 2015 for the steering lock if this car is still being sold through dealerships it should be told to the buyer of any recall issues that have went on prior however i'm still making payments on this car and i have a $1,200 problem that needs to be fixed and because i bought the car one year after the extended warranty is up ifile to have to pay all these expenses out of my pocket which is nowhere right

I love my altima. but recently it's an expensive pain in the neck. recently my airbag lights came on. took it to the mechanic and he said my airbag sensors are not working. since the sensors is in the seat, i have to pay $3,100 to replace the bottom cuahion in the passenger side of my car. my has wasn't in an accident, there was no moisture in my car to cause this problem. i've looked online and airbag sensor on the passenger side of altimas has gotten a lot of complaints. this is not a cheap fix and there's too many nissan owners complaining about their 2009 nisaan altimas passenger airbag sensor failure. nissan need to fix this before someone gets hurt.

Car will not start and key lock is on as well as the red light with the car flashing inside of the car. i looked the problem up and it stated something about it being a steering mechanism. i was parked in a restaurant got out to get my food and came back to the car and car wouldn't start.

Key locking mechanism stalled engine

I purchased a nissan altima 09 and haven't had any issues until 8/03/17. as i went to turn the car on a light came up on the dash board indicating that there was an issue with the steering lock. i figured it was a quick fix so i called my local dealership and they told me it's a faulty steering lock and asked for me to bring my car in. i had to call out of work to try and resolve this ongoing issue. i looked on online for possible solutions and couldn't find any but i did find that many nissan altima 09 owners were dealing with the same problem. i have no warranty on my car but there has to be a way to fix my car so i won't be stranded and won't have to pay 600$ for a small part...

Cpsc:my 2009 nissan altima caught fire while driving down the highway. the car was engulfed in flames in little over 2 minutes. whole car burned. *bf updated 05/10/2017*js

I bought the car at roughly 54k miles. approximately around 62k, the air conditioner stopped blowing cold air. i work on residential ac units. my pressures are equalized. i bypassed the pressure switch temporarily during diagnostics to see if the pressure switch was the issue. the problem continued when bypassed.the issue is either the clutch specifically or the compressor is bad. here recently, i have noticed a "jerking" motion when attempting to accelerate. obviously, this will be the shift solenoid or the cvt. cvt fluid is good. these issues have been going on with 2009 altimas for over 8 years now. why hasn't there been a recall? what is required to get a recall in effect? there have been multiple complaints regarding cvts, start/stop procedures, and ac problems, but not one recall concerning this has happened. nissan refuses to help.

I purchased my 2009 nissan altima in january of 2017.. by may 2017 i noticed as the climate changed my dash was sticky and if your finger scraped it pieces would come pff.. i noticed my dash was melting as the summer went on and it was sticky and dust or a wash cloth i used to clean it particles were sticking to the dash. when the sun is out the sun hits spots where it blinds you driving due to the dash melting..the dash should not melt in a car and its a real issue that now even though i love my car i want to get rid of it due to the dash melting.

On thursday february 2, 2017 approximately 5:45 pm, i was driving in the middle of on kirkwood highway in newark, de which is 3 lanes. the car began to shake and hesitate to take off. while in the middle of heavy traffic the car finally stopped accelerating and would not move. i had my 3 year old son in the back seat at the time. an passerby finally pulled up behind me and helped me push my car out of the middle of the highway to the left turn lane so that i wasn't blocking the flow of traffic. after about 2 hours, a tow truck finally came and towed the car to benchmark transmission in newark, de. the mechanic named dante advised that the transmission had died. he also notified me that this was a known recall issued by nissan several years back which my transmission was now out of recall due to the mileage. my car was in the nissan service department in november 2012 to fix the electronic steering column lock that also turned into a recall. at that time nissan had my updated address as well as it has been continuously updated with the delaware dmv and i was never notified of any recall. there was also no indication that any issue was occurring with the transmission (no check engine light) prior to the incident. i want nissan to be held accountable for this incident. the cost of repair will be in upwards of $4,000.00

Issue with steering wheel that causes the car not to turn on

Issues with steering wheel which leads to the car not turning on at all .

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. while driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle stalled and did not start again. the contact thought the battery died and went to get jumper cables. when he returned, the vehicle was on fire. the fire and police departments were present and a report was filed. the vehicle was not destroyed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was invalid. the approximate failure mileage was 105,000.

While visiting a local park i came back to my car to find it unable to be started. it is an automatic start and the key fob battery had been replaced but it was a faulty part within the car, the electronic steering column lock, that prevented me from being able to start my car. i was left stranded in this park while it was getting dark and i was by myself for 4 hours before a truck could get to me.

Came out of the store couldn't start vehicle all of a sudden, wheel wouldn't turn, brakes were hard to step on, "key" light on! doors able to unlock and lock and trunk. towed 3x nobody could fix it said needs to go back to nissan nobody could even get a diagnostic output on it..sitting at nissan now waiting for them to tell me cost which i can't afford a dime, missed work single m w disabled very sick son..luckily he wasn't with me! i even changed battery in key fob made no difference.i googled my car and seen all the same exact complaints as mine!,very sad and upset

Owner of a 09 nissan altima 2.5 s. my whole family got stuck with the car that didnt start at all, there's a key logo in the dash panel showing so i went to find some solutions online and found that im lost because it wont start again until fix by a dealer. no fun at all because i found that i might have to pay out of my pocket and this been a old problem that i never was mentioned by my service dealer. nissan needs to do something about it.

After my 4.5 hr. shift at the hospital, i went out to start my car & it wouldn't start. it showed "no key". i had battery power but the owner's manual showed that the fob was not connecting to the car. i was stranded and it was below zero temperatures. the next day after changing the batteries in the fob, my son brought me to the car. still no starting it. we had to tow the car to a dealer who proceeded to charge me $1301 dollars to fix. it was the "defective steering lock module" (exact words on the bill) and i needed a new battery even though it was only 2 years old. the dealer didn't know why my battery was affected but it would no longer hold a charge. when i looked on ebay for the steering part, it was $350. nissan charged me double. i asked the dealer why the double charge, they said "who knows, call nissan." when i asked why this "defective part" was not recalled, the reply was "nissan offered an extension on the warranty. you should have been notified." this is a safety issue as there was no warning of it's going out and nissan knows about it.

We have a defects in the electronic steering column lock (escl) which has disable the push-button ignition on nissan altima 2009 sl. it can happened anytime which put a persons life in danger if you get stuck on or to f the road. based on my research i have read numerous cases where very same situation had caused by faulty electronic steering column lock (escl). the only option we have right now to get your car towed to deal ship and pay well over $1100. even though this nissan fault for choosing to use the faulty part. this is absolutely unfair on their part. please advice us as what can we do to have nissan to accept the responsibility and replace this faulty part replaced.

My car was parked on the street when i tried to start it and nothing, the engine does not turn over. the fob is recognized and the lights work. tried jumping but nothing. the steering wheel was not locked intially but since being towed, the wheel is now locked. brake is hard to push when attempting push start---ignition switch does nothing.

The " steering column lock actuator" is failing keeping car from starting and stranding me with no alternatives means to start car. this an apparent known problem to nissan yet they refuse to do the right thing and issue a recall.

Electronic steering column lock (escl); this was a covered warranty replacement until january of this year. i was not aware of any recall or that this might have even been an issue. i was parked out near a lake and had to call my friends to pick me up and have my car towed. this is not a small issue, if someone was unable to start their car in a freezing situation they could die. or if i was needing to get a family member to the hospital i would be unable to.

2009 nissan altima 2.5 s won't start and left my 18 year old daughter stranded in cold weather. appears to be a steering wheel lock failure (part # 48700-9n00b). if this occurred just three days earlier, she would have been stranded in sub-zero weather. she returned to her car after running some errands in a small town we live near and when she got in her car an amber light with a key symbol was present on left side of instrument panel and the right side of the instrument panel had a red flashing (approx. every 4-5 seconds) light of a car and key symbol. the brake pedal felt as if it was locked, but the brake lights still came on. the steering wheel was not locked and the dashboard didn't illuminate as normal just before starting. the start push button did nothing (wouldn't even crank the engine). this vehicle has less than 60k miles on it and is in immaculate shape. i've read countless articles and postings to forums of others who have experienced the same issue and nissan is fully aware of it. how can a car manufacturer knowingly allow this problem to exist which greatly puts lives at risk. on top of it all the cost to repair this issue ranges anywhere from $800.00 to $1200 at a dealer.

Car woould not start with push button. did start remotely but as soon as tried to restart car after getting in, car would not start. defective locking mechanism in steering wheel so would not start. if late at night in no cell service area what do you do? no way to call for help? car no start? car was parked in garage. remotely started then tried to restart after getting in car. push button start will not work because the steering lock mechanism is defective. many many of them do this. after replaced ok. this should definitely be a safety recall. note cost is $1045 to fix. very bad safety situation. needs reconsideration for recall.. is problem with 2009 and 2010 altima's.

The power lock steering keeps on locking the start system and car can`t start .

Driver side door will not open. online research refers to "actuary" needing to be replaced. the door will lock and unlock but door will not open. fortunately, other doors still function.

Takada recall- the car was stationay and would not start.

Defective steering lock system. does not allow car to start at all. car was parked and after school, was not able to start.

Steering column lock system i was stranded in freezing temperatures with my 3year old when the steering lock system failed and my car would not start. i had stopped to drop off my 6 year old at school and when i returned to my car it wouldn't start. i had no warning or indication that there was a problem. not was i aware of the frequency of this happening to other nissan vehicles.

Takata recall the steering wheel lock mechanism failed on me with my eight month year old baby in the car on a cold fall day i was stuck for 2 hours waiting for a tow truck company nissan is aware of the problem but it would cost 1000. dollars out of pocket if it fails again another 1000 dollars i make 35000 a year i can afford this every time

Arrived at a gas station to fuel up, after i was done the car wouldn't start. come to find out that the steering lock pump (which is connected to the push to start mechanism) is worn out which stops the car to turn on

Car stalled twice both parked in a parking lot. battery works and key fob works with doors. but engine wont start with push button start. electronic steering column lock defect.

Takata recall the steering wheel locked in my altima and it left me stranded in the road! the battery wasn't dead, the control key wasn't bad either. the dealer says is a $1,300 repair job! it's the steeringg wheel lock that needs replacement and i have seen youtube videos and it has happened to thousands of people with 09' altimas!! why did you take the manufacture replacement in 2015!? this is so horrible! i understand that i have to replace wheels, engine oil and other wear and tear items, but how in the world can a part that is inside my steering wheel have problems!? i don't event have a key! i use "keyless control". this is so upsetting! please listen to your customers and have it fixed by the manufactures expense!!!
