Problems with 2003 Nissan Altima ENGINE

On average, the 2003 Nissan Altima starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 116 772 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2003 Nissan Altima

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. while driving 45 mph, the engine seized and the vehicle powered down. the vehicle could not be restarted. in addition, the engine made an abnormal wrapping noise. the vehicle was towed to the contact's home. the contact called darling honda nissan (114 sylvan rd, bangor, me 04401, (207) 941-1460), but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired because the vin was not included in a recall; however, the contact stated that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 03v251000 (fuel system gasoline). the failure mileage was 122,875.

Takata recall while sitting in idle the car just shut off randomly. i was able to start the car back up after a few seconds, but it's been happening to often while in idle

Nhtsa shows 10 recalls for my car, went to nissan bridgewater and they only found one recall to reprogram ecm and perform idle air volumn learning procedure, after this 2 days later service engine light went, now they want me to pay 140 for diagnostic test, they didn't want to see that my car has 10 recalls and to look into those issues, the car has no power while driving in on the highway, headlights keep going on and off, the gas gage fluctuates, the car goes through gas real fast, nissan bridgewater needs to fix these issues, if not i will report nissan bridgewater dealer to the better business bureau, this car has 90,403 miles

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. the contact stated that the vehicle lost power intermittently and stalled. the vehicle was able to restart. fred anderson nissan of asheville (629 brevard rd, asheville, nc 28806, (828) 348-6850) was contacted. the vehicle remained at the dealer for months, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 234,000.

After about two months of having my vehicle to repair recalls, my service advisor informs me that the recalls will not be completed due to the absence of a specific code. i was informed of the recalls and the risks they create without repair; however, nissan is still refusing to do them. this specific recall can cause the engine to stop running without warning during operation which would result in a crash. i have been compliant and patient with nissan, and i feel taken advantage of. the service manager and my service advisor have both seen the problems first-hand while driving my car themselves. after speaking with corporate nissan, nissan still wants me to take my vehicle back to drive until the code appears. having common sense, and a toddler, i do not think this is a smart or safe decision. i would like the recalls completed as i was originally promised.

Excessive oil consumption starting at 94,000 miles. no leaks or exhaust smoke. have read catalytic convertors were poorly designed resulting in low oil level and engine damage. car still runs well but concerned about safety and reliability. nissan forums full of similar comments including nissan's awareness of the defect and lack of action. car has died in traffic on a few occasions but runs well otherwise.

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. while driving 45 mph, the check engine indicator illuminated and the vehicle suddenly started jerking and sputtering until the engine turned off. the vehicle had to be towed to nissan of mobile (1015 east interstate 65 service rd s, mobile, al 36606) where they replaced the coil pack. the contact stated that the same failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to nissan of corinth (813 s parkway st, corinth, ms 38834) where it was diagnosed that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was contacted. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 149,286.

This vehicle is on its second catalytic converter and flex pipe, i previously changed them in autum of 2017. after installing a brand new one from rockauto.com eastern catalytic for $290 less than two months later i got a check engine light on my car. i took it to two mechanics and advanced auto parts where the diagnostic tool read code p0420 low efficiency bank 1. i had no money to replace it and now it's so clogged up it's shooting carbon monoxide back inside the vehicle causing me to end up at the emergency room where they told me i had symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. i am suffering from memory loss, noncoherent speech, unable to see 20/20 vision and chest pain. i hope you here at the nation highway transportation safety board can do something when it comes to all these cheap parts coming i from china and being sold to people as if there high quality goods. i have to drive with my windows down in the middle of winter due to high levels of this poison.

Every 100 miles car start burning oil to fast..engine start running slow..check engine light start blinking on and off

I have received several recalls from nissan and mossy nissan el cajon refused to repair: most recent today for airbags

My car had same identical problem (as verified by an independent auto repair shop) as cars subject to nhtsa campaign number: 03v455000 [i.e., sudden engine stalling & delayed restart due to defective sensors], but nissan refused to expand the recall to include my car. apparently, there are thousands of similar situations showing up on the internet, posted by unhappy owners similarly ignored by nissan.

We purchased a 2003 nissan altima, after making a stop on the way home, 3 hours away, the car would not restart. we were stationary in a residential parking lot. had it towed to a certified nissan dealership in northern virginia and it was determined it was the crankshaft/camshaft positioning sensors. nissan would not honor the recall because our altima has the 3.5 v6. apparently the recall is only for the 4cyl. well guys, the sensors in the v6s don't work either. so after paying the $1,068.17 repair cost and multiple trips back and forth to northern virginia (if you have ever been there you know traffic is horrible) we finally brought the car home. bad business!!

Takata recall engine was remanufactured april 4th, 2012. engine burning oil, more then likely catayltic converter, throwing codes. cost around 5,000. engine having symptoms...again, for the same thing. nissan offered to diagnose for free, but states the warranty period is over. also found that the engine was used, by source other then the dealership. would like someone to honor this recall, as in 2012 it should have been replaced for free upon recall. is there anything anyone can do to help the situation? car began shaking, and losing power, on the road, had the car towed home. 25,000 miles on the reconditioned engine, oil blowing, 4 quarts in 3 miles.

Takata recall my car seems like it won't crank up or like it is not getting gas

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning and would not restart. on various occasions, the failure occured while the vehicle was stationary as well. the vehicle was diagnosed as needing the cam shaft sensor replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 200,000.

Takata recall. my complaint is that while driving my 2003 nissan altima, the engine stalls intermittently. i only have about 50k miles on the car and it has been well cared for. this is very dangerous as you can imagine. the code comes up p0335, but the mechanic believes it is a faulty crankshaft position sensor as well as circuitry issues involving the same part. apparently, there has been a recall on the crankshaft position sensor for the 2003 nissan altima, however dealers are not willing to acknowledge this. i would like this investigated further, as i'm discovering upon further research this is a pandemic among 2003 nissan altima owners and an extreme safety hazard while driving. i was nearly rear ended at a stoplight a few weeks ago and while driving at a 45mph speed on a busy street where there were many cars around me.

Nissan altima recall i was driving down the road an my 03 nissan died an would not start back it doesn't turn over. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. the contact stated that the service engine soon light illuminated constantly. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the crank shaft position sensor failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 03v455000 (engine and engine cooling). due to the failure, the vehicle could not pass the state emission inspection. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 185,202.

My wife was driving our nissan altima with our kid when all of a sudden the car started to stutter and then it just stopped in the middle of the road. luckily the car behind her did not hit her. she was able to start the car again after a few minutes and then was able to drive it home. after she reached home, i then took the car to a nearby auto shop when the car just stopped again in the middle of crossing an intersection. the steering wheel was stiff and it could not be turned. i tried to start the car but it wouldn't start. i waited for a few minutes and then i was able to start and drive the car. i turned on the hazard lights and then drove the car to the auto shop. the mechanic mentioned the cam shaft sensor was bad and upon searching online i found similar drivers mentioned the same issue and that there has been a recall on this. i have all the paper work from the mechanic as proof that this was the same problem as mentioned in this link. http://repairpal.com/nissian-crankshaft-and-camshaft-sensor-recall-492 i contacted nissan consumer affairs and they claimed that there weren't any recalls. they weren't willing to admit this issue. it seems like they will act only when there is a serious injury or loss of life.

Loose power valve screws - while driving my 2003 nissan altima 2.5 s both on city streets and on the freeway, the vehicle arbitrarily ran super rough to the point of almost completely cutting off in middle of traffic lanes. one instance was particularly dangerous because i was making a left turn across traffic lanes, and the engine stalled in the middle of opposing traffic lanes and i was almost t-boned by oncoming cars. finally the engine wouldn't start at all one day, so i had the car towed to the dealer, and they identified a problem with intake power valve screws that needed to be replaced at a significant price. i had to get the car towed once before, and the dealer diagnosed the problem as a defective camshaft position sensor, not covered by any recalls, but obviously a significant problem for 2003 nissan altima owners. after doing my own research, there seems to be a large number of owners of this same car experiencing the same power valve screw problem also. i also believe there is a recall on 2004 and 2005 nissan altimas for this problem, which have the same engine as my car.

Loss of all power while driving

My nissan altima 2003 2.5 sl has been experiencing lot of vibrations and power lost while traveling on city streets and highways, the problem seems get worse once your exit the highway sitting at the light the car want idle. it seems like it wants to shut off. now my engine check light comes on so i took the car to tire plus car care, they told me the ecm program is out dated and the code they read indicate new program update and possible catalytic converter problem, i took my car to have catalytic converter changed $400.00 dollars they cleared the engine check light and said this should take care of the vibration and engine idle problem, one week later engine check light came back on, problems of vibration has gotten worse. i decided to take the car to courtesy nissan dealer had them to perform diagnoses service person told me the ecm was out dated so i paid $120.00 dollars to update ecm program, the service person told me the vibration is because maybe the throttle body (power valve screw) may be going bad and if power loss happen again i will need to replace the throttle body at my expense. note: i have done some research and found nissan north america (in their voluntary service campaign papers) refers to it as the power valve. there are small screws on the valve that come loose and get sucked into the engine. even though the 2002 through the 2005 altima 2.5s' all have the qr25de 2.5s engine (which is the exact same engine with the exact same problems), the manufacturer, in this case nna is able to loophole the laws concerning a recall. like in my case and other people's cases, we have the 2002 and 2003 altima that is experiencing this problem, but nna won't take care of it even though they are aware of it and currently have a vsc on the 2004 and 2005 models. *dt

Everything i have had to replace/repair on this car is linked to recalls, but nissan is denying this & refusing to help. they said my vehicle was not part of any recalls but everything that's failing is related. it has died on me in the middle of highway traffic w/ my child in the car several times. this car is defective & no one from nissan is concerned!!!! butterfly screw/valve issues, cam/crank shaft issues--related to engine cooling, high oil consumption; alternator failing; oil leaking

Car suddenly stops while your fmdriving at a low speed. check engine comes on andturns vehicle off. this is very dangerous and i font understand why it hasnt been recalled. most of the comments are said to be either the camshaft or crankshaft. they replaced the part and it was fine for 3 months and it ccontinues to do it. im going to end up causing an accident and nissan doesnt even care....

Like many others my 2003 nissan altima has stalled in traffic while driving. it reads no codes. there could have been a serious accident! this is a major concern i could have been on the interstate or in having traffic. i called nissan and they state there was a recall for a problem to this affect and it was already fixed on this vehicle in 2007. they will not fix it again. unbelieveable! also like many other my floor board has rusted. i had a patch repair to pass inspection. this car is a saftey hazord. after reading numerous reports that others have experienced similar situations of cutting off in traffic! i have not read any fatalities yet thank goodness! recall this car befor someone is killed!

Check engine lights - oxygen sensor - brakes and router - seatbelt

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. the contact stated that the service engine warning light illuminated randomly. the contact stated that the vehicle consumed an abnormal amount of oil as the failure progressed. the vehicle stalled several times and was able to be restarted but the failure continued. the vehicle was taken to multiple independent mechanics but was not diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine assembly needed to be replaced. the contact was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 06v242000 (engine and engine cooling), 03v455000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 140,000.

Whie driving about 45mph the engine shuts off, steering was very hard . tried too restart engine, hard to restart. at tiomes the car is hard to start after sitting for awhile. engine also stumbles,or seems to miss fire while driving. this not the first incident. had the sensors replaced after the first problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. while driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle shook and rattled. in addition, the vehicle stalled and the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was restarted. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the crank shift position sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 03v455000 (engine and engine cooling). the failure mileage was 28,000.

Car stalled two times within 20 minutes when slowing car down to make a turn. meineke and paul miller nissan of fairfield, ct identified that parts 23731-al61a (crankshaft/camshaft sensor) and 23731-6j90b (camshaft position sensor) need to be replaced. these sensors were part a recall for the same make, year and model of car that i own. nissan n.a. claims that my vin was not a part of the recall. 630,000+ vehicles were affected by this recall but my vehicle does not apply. on line complaints suggests that the exact same complaint keeps recurring but nissan has not expanded there vin registry to include all cars that are affected. spoke with nissan n.a. case expediter who stated my vehicle vin was not on the affected list although my complaint was the same as those vehicles on the list. nissan representative would not tell me where my part was made and where the defective parts were in fact made. claimed that this was internal nissan information that they had no obligation to give me. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. while driving approximately 40 mph and accelerating, there was an abnormal noise coming from engine. the oil warning indicators illuminated intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was informed that there was excessive oil burning. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 38,000. the vin was not available.

We purchased the vehicle from a private individual. it had 105000 miles on the odometer, it is a 2003 nissan altima with a 2.5l (4 cylinder engine) shortly after purchase.. we noticed a very foul smell coming from the exhaust and into the passenger cabin. also the engine consumed 1 quart of oil per 50 to 60 miles. no exaggeration ! i discovered a recall on the altima concerning it's precat/catalytic converter could over heat, break into pieces and some of the pieces could be sucked back into the engine, scoring the cyclinder walls and causing excessive oil consumption. i emailed nissan with my concerns. they assigned a case # to my concern. they asked for a nissan dealer to evaluate the problems and give them a formal diagnostic of the issues. the altima had a new catalytic converter installed in 2007. a oil consumption test was done on the car and the oil topped off and we were told to come back in 250miles so they could check the oil. in 160miles we returned and there was no oil on the dip stick! also the check engine light was on and a code for "catalyst" problems was in the computer. this was all sent to nissan via email. now instead of a rep. handling the issues.. they have sent it to a regional rep. and we are awaiting their "goodwill" decision. that year altima and engine has repeat issues even after recall repair. tpart of the recall states that if the owner does not check the oil often and ignores engine noises that it could result in a fire! supposedly a exhaust hanger catchs debris and causes the fire??? lol who are they kidding? *tr

2.5l engine s model nissan altima. 2002-2003 has well documented blogs and complaints of excessive oil use. causes are any thing to poor design valve seals to dust kick back from overheated catalytic convertor into piston/cylinder area causeing ring failures as well. this current vehicle has to been diagnoisised by a nissan dealer. it burns 2 quarts of oil per 160miles. the dealer recommends a new engine and new catalytic convertor. the regional nissan manager chris states nissan will not assist in any way to replace/repair these items because we have not owned the vehicle long enough. the car is worth $3800. the engine +convertor+ labor is over the value of the car. some one high up somewhere dropped the royal ball on recalling this engine. *tr

I purchased a 2003 nissan altima with 106,000. as is no warranty. within the first month it blew the head and needed a new engine which i paid for out of pocket. they supposedly replaced the enigine with a new crate engine once again the car lasted about 3 weeks before it was smoking so bad and will only drive at idle speed.. i dont think the place i bought it has a very good mechanic and i really would rather take it to a nissan dealer.. but i dont want to pay for another engine i feel like ive already bought the car twice.

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. while driving at various speeds, the vehicle decelerated and the check engine warning light illuminated. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the crank position sensor or cam position sensor failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number 03v455000: (engine, engine cooling). the failure mileage was 88,000. updated 03/30/15*lj updated 6/22/2015*js

This nissan is burning oil like crazy. it started in jan, 2015, engine was making terrible noise, oil level checked, completely empty. i took it to nissan who said it wasn't a problem and did oil change. then, just this saturday, june 27th the car was hard to start and sounded like metal so i turned it off and checked the oil- completely empty again. we had to pour 4 quarts in!!! it does not have a leak, nothing is ever seen where it has been parked. it is just burning oil like crazy due to some type of defect from nissan that hundreds and hundreds have complained about on line if you google nissans burning oil... and dangerous situations that have occurred . i do not want to wait for an accident, please, please, listen to all of us and get nissan to address this failure with their vehicles. this vehicle only has 100,000 on it and i have changed the oil every 3500 miles without fail. i did nothing to cause this along with the other hundreds to thousands of other nissan owners that have complained about this. i have called nissan in the past on my other altima about their ac that fails due to it always running with defroster and it doesn't turn off then so it's always running. also, i see many other rusted out floorboards, causing the passenger seat to not be bolted down in this same year that i had happen to me 2 years ago and had to spend $2000.00 to fix that they said the same, sorry , this is not our problem. what would have happened in an accident, the passenger would've not been protected when their seat flew off. please, please go after them ....they are terrible.

The code is for crankshaft positioning sensor failure. the vehicle lost power during driving. the vehicle was not able to be started right after. only pumping gas pedal while turning the key in ignition was able to start the vehicle. *tr

The floor boards rotted out, just found out about it, give it a few more months. i can become fred flintstone and start pushing my car around when the camshaft/crankshaft sensor goes out again. both sensors have been replaced and still had not corrected the problem. brought the car in today and was told there are no recalls for your car. that's interesting when you can't go anywhere and you are sitting at a light with traffic behind you. that's were meet the flintstones comes in, using foot power to move the car.

Malfunction indicator light is on. drove to a repair shop to get a diagnostic analysis on the engine. i was told the reason for the indicator light was because i had a bad crank sensor. there is a recall for that so, i called the dealership and they ran my vin number and told me there was no recall for my car and i explained the situation to him they still wasn't going to fix it. then i called the nissan recall place and she said the same thing. so now what do i suppose to do now. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. the contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the vehicle decelerated independently and failed to accelerate. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the crank sensor needed to be repaired. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 03v455000 (engine and engine cooling) and nhtsa campaign number: 06v242000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 200,000.

Was driving 45mph when the engine shut off, steering wheel got stiff, and i had to maneuver to safety. tried repeatedly to turn on the car, but it didn't work. i came to a complete stop, waited a few minutes, and then the car turned on normally. i have a family of nissan owners and this was the first incident of this ever happening. i just want nissan to help fix this, or risk loosing a valued customer to another car brand. considering infinity just lost 2 ceo's to other brands makes me (as a consumer) uncertain about this brands future. *tr

Tl* the contact owned a 2003 nissan altima. while driving 60 mph, the front end of the vehicle caught fire. the fire department extinguished the flames, but the vehicle was destroyed. there were no injuries. the vehicle was not diagnosed. the failure mileage was 130,000.

I pulled out of a parking spot onto a busy street when the car suddenly shut off while i was driving. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled on numerous occasions. the dealer stated that the camshaft position sensor, crank position sensor, and the timing kit needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 06v242000 (engine and engine cooling) and nhtsa campaign number: 03v455000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 150,000. updated 12/2/14*cn *js

In nov 2013 the car would stall (engine dies) while driving. the car would not start sometimes and the check engine light came on. vehicle was taken to a nissan dealership where the oem was reprogrammed. i was also told the cam position sensor had an internal failure. the oem reprogramming was covered by a recall but not the sensor which was vin specific, as told by nissan. i replaced the sensor. this year the car has been jerking and would not start several times (seems the problem re-appears every summer). i again took the car for repairs and was told it is the crank and cam position sensor. i have again replaced the sensor and called nissan. i was told my car is not covered by the recall as it is vin specific. *tr
