Tl*the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. while driving approximately 30 mph the check engine light illuminated on the instrument panel. he stated that the vehicle continued t function normally and was immediately driven to an authorized dealer. the dealer advised him that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact stated that the failure had been on going for three to four weeks. the manufacturer had not been contacted. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 100,000.
The car would intermittently stall and sometimes would lurch when driving. we replaced spark plugs and a coils, but periodically the check engine light would still come on. i was driving around town and was stopped at a stop light. as i took off from the light, the car stalled and suddenly stopped. i tried to restart the vehicle, the engine revved and smoke filled the interior of the vehicle and a strong burning oil/gas smell. i then had to have the car towed as it would not turn over. the person behind me nearly ran into me since the car stopped so suddenly. the mechanic replaced the crank position sensor and the pre catalyst and catalytic converters. it was discovered at that time that the vehicle had used about 2.5 qts of oil and no oil light came on. today, i drove the car for the 2nd time since the repair and it is losing power and lurching while on the highway. there is a ticking noise in the engine, and the car shudders like it is going to stall. it is being brought back to the mechanic today. the engine light started flashing and then turned solid. clouds of smoke began coming out of the exhaust. i'm afraid that the car will turn off while i'm driving on the highway and cause a crash. this problem has been ongoing for 2 years (begin around 65,000 miles) and occurs at various speeds from stopped to 65mph. *tr

This 2003 2.5s altima failed to start on february 6, 2011. upon taking the car to mossy nissan in san diego, where the car was sold, the mechanic working on the car diagnosed the car as having a screw from the power valve over the 4 cylinder that came loose and damaged the intake manifold and catalytic converter to the extent that they must be replaced. the car only has 41,000 miles. this problem has been documented extensively on the internet, including here: http://www.nissanclub.com/forums/2002-2006-nissan-altima-discussion-2-5-3-5/267734-butterfly-valve-power-valve-intake-manifold-issue.html. i believe there was a recall for the 2004 and 2005 altima for this issue. my understanding is that the 2003 2.5s altima has the same engine, yet no recall was made. after contacting nissan customer relations, they offered no assistance with fixing the problem, despite the blatant design flaw. other drivers that have had this issue with their altimas have been put at risk of death, as the cars have been known to stop running entirely while moving, because of damage done by the loose power valve screws to the engine. i hope that the nhtsa will take this issue seriously. thank you for your help. *tr

I have a 2003 nissan altima which engine turns off in the middle of the road with no warning. i had my car checked out and found out it was the crankshaft sensor. i spoke with a friend who works on cars and i was told that the original crankshaft sensor had to be updated to stop oil from getting on it. when i called nissan they refused to help me and i was told i would have to pay for the repairs myself. this car stops in the middle of the road without warning and nissan doesn't want to accept the fact that they have produce a faulty car that can cause a person to have a deadly crash. *tr

Screw came off of manifold intake and went into piston causing the engine to fail in the middle of four railroad tracks. spoke with dealership and nissan headquarter they said the 2003 nissan altima had no problems with that but 2002 2004 2005 certain models did but buy our vin # there was not a problem. i myself took the manifold off and found the screw had fell off the butterfly and went in to the engine piston i was lucky enough to take a magnet and fish out the screw. after driving the car a few miles the engine light is on i have not a clue what that is about. we done fell safe driving the 2003 nissan altima anymore, thanks in advance for looking into this problem. *tr

2003 nissan altima severe engine problems with stalling while driving! nissan dealer states "power valve screw failure" in which the screw became loose, shot out , went through the engine and went out the exhaust. this caused over $1200 worth of damage to my engine and hope that there is not further damage that has not even been identified yet. nissan will not cover the cost of repair, my private extended warranty will not cover the cost of repair. apparently , nissan has a "voluntary service campaign" for only for specific vin# /years and will not cover the repair cost even though they are aware this is a known manufacturing defect ! this could have caused a serious injury/accident had my son been on the highway going 70 miles per hour when the car stalled in traffic! *tr
I own a 2003 nissan altima. back in september of 2010, i was driving on my way to work. about 4 miles from my home. (my car is right under 107k miles at the time). i was driving normal, or correctly. all of a sudden my car shuts off! i have to jerk my wheel to the right and break my car before i caused an accident. i am so thankful i was not on the freeway when this happened. my life and the lives of others were put at risk that day because of this problem with your car. there is a recall for your car, actually quite a few, but the one i'm most interested in getting fixed is the one that determines my lively hood. all i am asking is you please fix this. i can go without the ac or having weak headlights to drive at night with. i just can't depend on this car to not kill me one day. please, i am begging you. once again for my life & the lives of many others that will be involved. please fix this problem! i cannot afford to pay for a new engine for the altima out of pocket. recalled on : 7/7/2006 influenced by: office of defects investigation recalled for: engine and engine cooling. *tr
On numerous occasions our 2003 nissan altima will just stop running while at a light or just slowed down in traffic. the car has been repaired numerous times for the same sensor replacement. i do not feel safe in this car any more. *tr
2003 nissan smoking, burning oil, sputtering. diagnosed (by $95.00 diagnostic i was required by nissan to get a nissan dealership) as catalytic converter has gone bad due to overheating, this has caused it to fall apart and go into the motor. now needs new catalytic converter and motor. there was a recall on 2003 altimas for this very problem, a problem that could cause a car to catch on fire. according to nissan my vin was not included in the recall therefore i never received any notice of it but now i have the very issues that the recall was to prevent but they refuse to cover the repair costs. this makes me question if they mistakenly left out some 2003 models that should have been included in the recall, and i have been riding around all this time with the chance my car could catch on fire, this is scary. there are tons of complaints online about this very issue and no one seems to be able to get nissan to respond, i feel like they need to go back and revisit that recall and maybe add more cars to it before someone gets seriously hurt. i filed a claim with nissan yesterday, in less than 24 hours they called back to say there was nothing they would do for me. not sure how much they looked into this because i called it in around 3pm yesterday and they called me back before 10am this morning. this issues needs to be addressed or someone is going to get hurt due to their car catching on fire. *tr
I suspected that my car developed problems with the exhaust system, and two nissan dealerships confirmed that the catalytic converter is cracked. i found out that problems with defective catalytic converters in 2002-2003 altimas were addressed in nissan voluntary recall campaign #r3007 (nhtsa #03v-084). the work pertaining to that recall was performed on my car on 07/31/2006 but the defective catalyst has not been replaced as instructed on page 5 of nissan recall campaign bulletin #ntb03-070c. i asked the dealerships to replace the catalyst as part of the recall #r3007 (nhtsa #03v-084), but they refused since the recall has been recorded as performed. i contacted nissan consumer affairs, but my request to complete the recall work was denied. i contacted ceo of nissan, carlos ghosn, and executive vp of nissan north america, carlos tavares. they also rejected my request to properly service my car as nissan promised in its recall #r3007 (nhtsa #03v-084). the catalyst defects described in nissan recall campaign bulletin #ntb03-070c are very serious. the debris from catalyst may damage the engine which can result in fire. i kindly request that you investigate whether nissan's remedy (recall #r3007, nhtsa #03v-084) in this case of defective catalyst was adequate. *tr
2003 nissan altima vin# [xxx] . loss of power and stalling at low speed. obd codes show p0725 and p0335 which are engine speed sensor circuit malfunction and crankshaft position sensor circuit malfunction. problem appears to be covered by previous recall rq06001 or 06v24200 however nissan denies that this vehicle is included in the recall notice. *tr
The engine stalls when stopped or moving at slow speeds. this happens intermittently, between 1-15 times a month in normal driving. there is an outstanding recall (06v242000) that matches my problem but my vin doesn't match those being recalled. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, she noticed that the vehicle started losing power. she drove the vehicle to a repair shop where she was informed that the catalytic converter was replaced. a few days later, the mechanic noticed that the vehicle was becoming low on oil. the contact filled the oil reservoir and noticed that there was very little oil left. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the contact was told that she needed a new engine and the problem was widespread with the catalytic converter. the contact called the manufacturer who advised her to take the vehicle in for a diagnostic fee before they could escalate her case to a regional specialist. the contact took the vehicle into the dealership where it was confirmed that she needed a new engine; the manufacturer stated that there was nothing they could do to assist. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the contact believed the failure to be related to recall 03v084000 (engine and engine cooling:exhaust system:manifold/header/muffler/tail pipe) but the manufacturer refused to repair it since the mileage was too high. the current mileage was approximately 124,000. the failure mileage was approximately 123,000. updated 12/02/10 *bf updated 12/08/10*jb updated 05/26/11 *bf updated 12/07/11 *bf updated 12/12/11 updated 12/30/11 *cn updated 06/27/12. *jb updated 01/29/14
I am one of many who have had the same problem with my nissan altima 2003 2.5 engine. the nissan dealership kept telling me they were not sure what was wrong with my car when i would take it in for their diagnostic testing. costing 91.00 each time you have that test done. i was told after many times of the car stalling and shutting off while driving it that it needed a coil #3 well that wasn't the problem the at all driving the car the day that we were going to replace the coil the engine completely shut down. so because i am at 89,000 mile and the warranty has run out i am basically out of luck is what they said and they aren't responsible. so here i am with a 2003 altima that needs a new engine cause the of the faulty catalytic converter. so why we were never told the many times we went in that this could be the problem is what i am so confused about. i am a single mom that still owes a year on this car at 400 a month and can not afford to replace the engine and the catalytic converter. this is crazy all the complaints of the same problem that i am having and nissan is not being accountable at all. and this problem could be very dangerous also if you were in traffic and your car just shut off. *tr

I had trouble starting my 2003 nissan altima about 3-4 weeks ago after returning from shopping. it started a few hours later. check engine light was on for a few weeks, then went off. on my way to work last week driving down highway at 65mph with the cruise control i lost all power and was unable to restart the vehicle and had it towed home. check engine light back on. the air filter was clogged and changed. my car started and i drove to work 2 days later without a problem, but the car would not start after returning home that day. code reader stated code p0340 camshaft position sensor malfunction. car started he next day and we checked codes again with car running and received the same code. called dealership and they advised no current recalls for my vehicle. estimated $281 for diagnostic, labor and part replacement. *tr

I own a 2003 nissan altima 2.5s. the car has a low idle and suddenly dies without warning while at stop signs and red lights. i've taken great care of this car but can't seem to pinpoint the problem. then i read here and all over the internet that this is a common problem. could it be a bad sensor? i called nissan but they do not recognize this problem. unbelievable.
2003 nissan altima-86,958 mi. purchased new march 2003 rusted floor boards i, too, am a victim of rusted floor boards(front driver and passenger) that will not pass inspection. this was found during an oil change on 4/21/10. all my maintenance work is done through the dealership on a regular basis. why wasn't this noticed 3/30/10 when i had a catalytic converter replaced or on 10/23/09 at another oil change and multi-point inspection or at any of the other many garage appointments? my auto-body technician found manufacturer's tape over the drain holes. they sent pictures to the nissan regional specialist. i was told by this person they handle things case-by-case, and they were not going to help me financially to get this repaired! the auto-body technician needs a section of floor. the hole is so bad patching with a piece of metal won't do the job. i have since been searching the web and found this is a common problem-nissan not taking responsibility for a flaw in their product. i have also found many people have had the rusted floor board problem and/or the catalytic converter problem. neither are inexpensive repairs. i'm ready to complete all the consumer forms i need to and spread the word that nissan will not stand behind their product. as much as i love my nissan, from what i've been reading i need to get rid of it(if i can). i have to foot the bill for the rotten floor boards-$1756.73. i never filed a claim with nissan for the catalytic converter because i was told it was a rare problem. so, i paid the $865.10. from what i've read on catalytic converters one must figure out what caused the converter to go bad or it will happen again. *tr
My oil light flashed on and off my 2003 nissan altima with 97,000 miles. i pulled over and checked the oil. the dipstick was bone dry. i had the car towed to an independent mechanic. he said it is an issue with the catalytic converter that destroyed the engine. i need a new engine. nissan had a recall on this exact thing, but after contacting them, they claim there is no issue and they are not liable. when i pressed them, they said it was because nissan had not been servicing the car and i have too many miles. i pressed them again, and there story changed again. if you google this problem, hundreds of people have the same problem with the same non-action from nissan. this is after 9 recalls on this car. someone has to help us. please. *tr

We have a 2003 nissan altima with a " malfunction in the crank position sensor a circuit" (obd2 code po335) which causes the vehicle to stall out while in drive creating a very unsafe driving condition. nissan has a recall but all they will do is reprogram the ecm which doesn't fix problem. either the circuit needs to be repaired/replaced or the sensor needs to be replaced. there have been many complaints about this problem and we feel it is nissan's responsibility to remedy it... so far we have not had any luck in getting it resolved... *tr
I have a 2003 nissan altima. this car is burning oil like crazy. there's no smoke or anything of that sort, but i have to keep an eye out and put oil in my car to keep it running at least every 4-5 days or so. gas is high and oil is getting higher; i have to keep at least 2-3 quarts in my trunk. the check engine light has been on for sometime now. while driving on the interstate if i go over 70mph the check engine light starts blinking. when i take my foot off the accelerator the check engine light stops blinking, but continues to stay on. however, i just had my spark plugs changed and now the car won't start. please i need some help asap.... i don't have money to purchase a new one at this time, but wish someone can tell me what is going on. the dealer is no help whatsoever. they get you in there and tell you that this, this, and this is the problem. it seems that nothing is under warranty with nissan, and i don't own the car as of yet i'm still making monthly payments. i think that nissan needs to go over the engine, electronic, and etc. because canton, mississippi is the home of nissan and you have some big problems on your hands!!! *tr

Driving down the interstate all of a sudden the car began to 'hesitate" and i was losing 'power/speed" . got off freeway and a "rattle" type noise coming from engine bay. the muffler sounded like it was "sputtering". drove via city streets at 20 mpg - 40 mpg towards a repair facility ( all the while feeling as though the car was going to die) and 20 minutes later the "engine light" came on. pulled over and had car towed the last 4 miles to the repair facility. first diagnosis was a "foreign matter" hit the #1plug and closed the gap. the plug was regapped and installed. car seemed fine , but 2 days later the same symptoms happened on the interstate again. pulled over and drove to repair facility where it was discovered a common problem with 2002 thru 2005 altimas have. the butterfly valves screws had come loose and they could not find the screws. ran a magnet in that area but pulled nothing. tech thinks it may have blown out of the exhaust if i remember correctly. so the first time it occurred was probably a screw hitting the plug and closing the gap and the second time was because of the missing screw/screws not letting the valve functioning properly. the intake plenum was removed and the secondary butterfly plates were inspected. the #1 plate lodged by intake valve and 2 plate screws were missing(passed into cylinder #1), all 4 plates were replaced and all screws secured with red loctite thread locker, total cost for first repair was $200 which included decarb service(because they thought "loose carbon" hitting the plug closed the gap). the second time to cure the actual cause was $460.87 which included replacing a gasket also. *tr
I had a similar, yet extreme experience. i took my car in to get the oil changed at a local chevy dealership (it was cheap.) when i went to pick up my car, the technician told me that he pulled less than a 8 oz. of oil from the engine. he said he couldn't find any leaks, but to keep an eye on the oil everyday. i left the dealership and decided to take the car for a drive to "reoil" the engine. the engine had been running a bit funny: not starting right away, trouble shifting for about 48 hours. i got about five miles at ~55 mph, and while accelerating from a left turn, heard something fall out of the engine. after that, white smoke started pouring out the exhaust. i knew the engine blew. the steering and brakes went out, and i got it to the side of the road (somehow.) the black smoke started pouring in from the vents. i don't remember stopping or getting out, but i remember turning around and seeing flames out the driver's side of the engine. the fire department arrived and put the fire out, but the car was totaled by my insurance company. the engine and interior, especially the driver's side, were destroyed. the backseat was smoke damaged. the trunk and three tires were relatively unharmed. *tr
