Hello, yesterday afternoon i started my 2009 mini cooper and noted that my gauges suddenly failed. the tach dropped to zero. suddenly i received a tire pressure warning light. i decided i would move the car to a more favorable location to look under the hood. as i placed the car in reverse i noted that my power steering had failed. i stopped the car immediately and popped the hood. i immediately noticed the smell of burning electrical equipment. i ran down to the basement to grab a wrench to disconnect the battery. when i returned i could hear pops and cracks and noted char on the hood interior. though the keys were out i continued to hear pops and cracks and felt heat accumulating . i finally got the battery disconnected and the popping stopped. after some investigation i found that the wiring near the power steering module was completely burnt out. the car drove fine the day prior. my wife is 38 weeks pregnant and i am shaken by the idea that this could have happened while she was driving the day ...
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 mini cooper. while driving 30 mph, the power steering completely failed without warning. the contact was able to regain control of the vehicle; however, the steering was rough and stiff. the contact performed his own inspection on the vehicle and noticed that the power steering pump was leaking. the contact spoke with an independent mechanic and was informed that the vehicle may be included in an unknown recall. the manufacturer was informed of the failure and stated that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v660000 (steering). the contact took the vehicle to mini of the woodlands (16675 i-45, conroe, tx 77385, 936-344-1258) and was informed that the vehicle could not be repaired because the steering pump was not the original mini cooper steering pump. the dealer offered no further assistance. the pump had not been replaced. the failure mileage was 83,000.

Bought this car for 16 yr old daughter. steering was cutting out while driving took car to mini of dallas recall was done on harness, pump, cooling fan. next week no steering again while driving took car back. mini stated drive belt broke and was repaired for 260.00. 3 days later was called at a 11:30 at night my daughter stating the steering had cut out again. i don't want my daughter in this car or anyone else for that matter what should i do with this car.
So i bought a 2002 mini cooper less than a year ago and it currently has 74k miles and attempting to pull into a parking spot at the grocery my steering goes completely out while i was trying to turn into my spot and ripped off a black molding that goes over the front passenger wheel and a significant ding and scratch.
Power steering pump problem for mini cooper r50 bought my r50 pre-owned 125000 kms on the odo from a dealership(not a mini dealership) as a present for my daughter in march 2019. i already knew there was something wrong. observed a leak in the power steering reservoir. dealer supposedly fixed the problem by replacing some hoses. after a month, i tried starting the car up and the car would not start. i was lucky to still be at home that time. recharged the battery and started the car. turned the engine off and noticed a sound. traced the sound to the power steering pump not turning off even if the engine is turned off. disconnected the battery so it will not do a full discharge. bought it back to the dealership that i purchased it from and they confirmed that the issue was with the ps pump. did research and found that there was a common issue related to this pump already and bmw has offered extended warranty on the pump and peripherals like hoses and reservoir covering 2003 to 2005 models due to the number of complaints and potential catastrophic issues ...
Mainly while cold and at low speed's the wheel suddenly becomes very hard to turn and i was told by a mechanic but it's a faulty hydraulic power steering problem
Very hard to turn steering wheel at times especially when moving slowly; coming to a turn at a light, backing out of a parking spot, etc.
