Engine temperature suddenly spiked and the on-board computer shut down the engine while driving on local highway. speed about 45 mph and was able to pull to shoulder. opened hood and found the coolant reservoir empty so added water and was able to drive the three miles to home. added additional coolant but shortly thereafter (5 - 7 miles of driving) the engine started to run rough and ended up having the car towed to the lincoln/ford dealership.the dealer reports that the water pump which is interanaql has failed resulting in coolant and debris entering the crankcase and contaminating the engine oil. on-line research indicates that this is a common problem. the dealership estimates that the repair cost will be $3,100.00 but this is for the water pump and motor oil only and does not address any abrasion or damage to the cam shaft.
