We have classified the 729 complaints from 2018 Jeep Wrangler about STEERING into the following categories.
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that after the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 18v343000 (steering), the steering became out of control while driving approximately 40 mph. there was no warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken back to snethkamp chrysler dodge jeep ram (313-429-0013, located at 11600 telegraph rd, redford, mi 48239) where the recall repair was performed by replacing the steering damper. the contact requested that the new part be replaced with the original steering damper. the contact stated that the vehicle drove better after the new part was replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to nhtsa. the failure was not remedied. the failure mileage was approximately 8,500.
The car shakes uncontrollably when driving on the highway and after hitting a bump or imperfection in the road. i have had the problem fixed once before a few months ago. last wee when driving back from dropping my son off at college the car shook uncontrollably at least a dozen times. the car seemed to shake at higher speeds and i would have to pull the car off the road to almost a complete stop to make the shaking stop.i also had the car repaired for the same issues at scap jeep in fairfield ct a few months ago. they said it was the steering damper. the car was fine for a few months but the problem came back again. the incident happened on 8/25. we fear taking the car on the highway.
Death wobble at 70mph. experienced it 4 times in 30 mile stretch of interstate 40. vehicle is stock. has been taken to the shop once for issue. appeared to be better until today. it was scary. with extreme vibration/shaking. did not feel safe to drive. especially with my family in vehicle.
Purchased the vehicle about 3 months ago . has been in and out of dealership because the steering is off. it has alot of play and has a dead spot in the middle which has made it very unsafe to drive. 2 dealership have tried fixing the issue, have thrown parts at it but have stated that the issue is a "characteristic of the vehicle" and so they have washed their hands by saying this. purchasing dealership has always been unwilling to work with us but have lied to us on multiple occasions. reached out to jeep care and had case escalated to a level 2 contact but they have not been of much assistance either as they have just gone with what the dealerships state. we were never offered to have jeep engineers come out and check the vehicle. we were taken on a test drive with other 2018 models and they drive exactly the same but the second that you ask the dealerships to allow you to drive a 2019 they become extremely hesistant and say that it's a different year so it does not apply. one dealership allowed us to drive a 2019 model of our vehicle and there is not steering issue of any type which only leads us to believe that jeep rectified the issue with the newer models and are refusing to speak up about the 2018 model, ours.
New jeep wrangler 4 door sahara wanders when driving all speeds. seems to have 1" play in steering wheel. hard to keep straight when driving. took back to dealer and they installed new steering stabilizer as per service bulletin. still hard to drive in straight line.
At highway speeds you can not keep the vehicle in a straight line. excessive steering wander. jeep currently has 4400 miles
I have owned several jeeps over the last 15 years and this particular event was the worst that i have ever encountered and was ongoing. we we traveling on dry smooth asphalt pavement on highway 82 10 miles east of basalt co at apx. 750 pm with outdoor temperature of 67* heading to aspen at apx 55 mph. all stock no add on's on this vehicle. all of the sudden the entire steering wheel started to shake and rattle so hard that i had no time to pull over and had to come to a complete stop on the highway. the wobbling would not stop until we reached 15 miles per hour. started to head to aspen again and in another 3 minutes the same wobbling, violent shaking started again at apx. 50-60 mph. there may have been a small indentation in the pavement. this was so upsetting for my aunt, that she refused to get back in my jeep and also refused to drive back to texas after this experience. when driving back to texas, every time i hit the smallest hole i would slow down with anticipation that the wobble would start again. i drove 55 mph all the way back so that i would feel more comfortable if it occurred again. this is a situation that needs to be addressed and fixed. when a passenger refuses to ride in a vehicle after experiencing this first hand it puts a burden on the family and the joy of owning a car. i do have a dash cam video if needed that i will keep on file. this is the 5th time this has happened 3 times before august and twice in august, my jeep was just serviced and inspected on august 15 2019. i have brought this to the dealers attention and they are not aware of any permanent fixes. this almost caused us to be rear ended on the highway at night on a blind curve.
I am experiencing the wrangler death wobble. going over 60 hitting uneven pavement and front end shakes. i first reported issue to dealer as loose steering around 5000 miles. now at 18000 full blown wobble. they performed the steering dampner recall which only made it worse. went back to dealer said they re adjusted dampner. driving home same issue again back to dealer. said they are having one of the jeep representatives coming to look at it. i have been through this before with my 2010 wrangle but that had over 85k miles. having to abruptly slow down when you are in highway traffic to 40 or less from 70 -75 is a safety hazard.
First time i noticed it vehicle was in motion i hit a small pothole and steering of the vehicle was uncontrollable for 10 15 seconds (the first time this happened we were on the way home from the hospital with our newborn and pulled over thinking a tire possibly blew). now, even the smallest bump in the road will cause the vehicle to shimmy and wobble almost taking over complete control of the steering. when i brought the jeep in for a routine oil change they did not mention the recall until i asked them about a possible problem with my vehicles steering. i have also received no notices or phone calls for this steering recall. this could be very dangerous if it was to happen with an inexperienced driver. we have to drive on a road daily that is problematic as it is under construction with all kinds of bumps and uneven surfaces. my vehicle is scheduled for the service recall repair. i wanted to document the problem with your agency and also note that jeep did not contact me whatsoever regarding this recall.
My new (first owner) 2018 jeep wrangler (jl) unlimited sport developed violent, sudden terrifying vibrations at approximately the 10,000 odometer mark. this condition was repeatedly induced at hi-way and freeway speeds (40-70 mph) when a slight imperfection was encountered. examples of sufficient imperfections include freeway irregularity, transitions at overpasses, slight potholes, and similar disturbances. the vehicle would enter a violent left-to-right shaking evidenced by a steering wheel that was difficult to retain a grip on, terrified passengers, and dangerous circumstances due to having to slow to approximately 35-45 mph to allow the vibrations to subside and control to be regained. on daily commutes on the freeway. jeep was taken to jeep dealership in archbold ohio where it was supposed to have been fixed but the issue remains to this day.
I have had a death wobble on my 2018 jeep wrangler jl. i took it into the dealership where i bought it and they said it was repaired. on my way home 82 miles away. it continued to have the death wobble. i called the dealership and they recommended i take it to a different dealership because they could not fix it. the next closest is over 2 hours away and a rental would be required. i have had so many issues getting this resolved.
2018 jeep wrangler sahara, completely unmodified, exhibited violent steering shake or "death wobble" when encountering road imperfections such as bridge expansion joints at highway speeds. condition intensifies until speed is brought down to approximately 45 mph (very dangerous in highway traffic). the dealer was familiar with the issue and was easily able to replicate during a test drive. the dealer inspected the track bar and replaced the steering stabilizer. unfortunately the violent steering shake (death wobble) persists when encountering uneven road surfaces at highway speeds. the new steering stabilizer helps the vehicle recover from the condition, but the vehicle still continues to go into full blown death wobble. this is an extremely unsafe condition that endangers not only the occupants of the jeep but also fellow highway users. i have driven more than 400,000 miles in jeep wranglers and have never encountered such a dangerous defect in any vehicle.
The vehicle is difficult to steer, especially at speeds 45 miles per hour and up. the vehicle has play in the steering wheel and tends to wander on the road and is very difficult to control when driving on a straightaway. problem is worse at freeway speeds. it has always been like this. fca has been no help.
Lot of play in the steering, the steering needs to past center then back to get it straight then repeated to maintain in the lane requiring constant corrections. a gust of wind has caused the car to change direction with no feedback in the steering wheel. the problem is less noticeable at low speed, but changes the longer it is driven.
Contact purchased the vehicle on 7/1/2019. the steering was wondering on the drive home from the dealership. we actually did not get to test drive the car we purchased as they were cleaning it so we test drove another vehicle. i took the vehicle to the normandin in san jose because my experience with south county gilroy was so bad, i will never go there again. normandin made an appointment for me to come in on the 10th of july to get the engine start stop system fixed and take a look at the steering. turns out that the vehicle was sold to us with a recall in place that the dealer did not mention and should not have sold the vehicle. steering wanders so jeep replaces track bar and steering stabilizer. parts came in and appointment was scheduled for 7/23 for new parts to be installed. jeep seem to wander less but was still did not drive as good as my jk. 7/29 i was driving jeep on freeway around 60 mph and i started to experience the steering wheel shimmer/ death wobble. every time i crossed a joint on the freeway, the steering wheel would shake pretty violently for about 2-3 seconds before it mellowed out. this happened about 8x driving about 16 miles down the highway. the jeep was dropped off at the dealer august 1st for them to evaluate it and i was told it could cost me $100 an hour for the evaluation. i am currently driving a rental*dt *jb
I do not know the exact cause, but the vehicle has extremely loose steering and wanders all over the lane while driving at all speeds. very difficult to control vehicle which makes it extremely unsafe to drive at higher speeds. combine the two with a bump in the road, and the vehicle jumps to the side. loose steering is easily noticed while the vehicle is turned off and parked.
My car has been experiencing the 'death wobble' as some dealerships have told me that. the steering gets a mind of its own and its super hard to control sometimes. i purchased a brand new car and it feels like im driving a lemon. almost every other day since i purchased it (one month ago) seems like ive almost gotten into an accident.
Vehicle has shaking in the steering wheel while driving at highway speeds especially when there is an imperfection in the road way.
Heavy amount of rust throughout the bottom of the vehicle. rust is located on frame welds, suspension connection brackets, and axel components. photos were taken 10 days after purchasing from the dealership. i took the jeep back and asked them to make sure everything was safe. the dealership looked at me like i was crazy and said yep that is normal to have rust. i asked it is normal to have this much rust on a brand new car. that is crazy. the steering jerks to the right and left constantly and you are always having to fight it to stay in a straight line. i have read from other report that this has become a common problem for this model year. i hope this issue will be resolved. i bought my car on 06/29/2019. the photos that are attached for your review were taken on 07/11/2019 thanks [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Steering has a dead spot in the wheel with about 2 inches of play. constantly have to make corrections left and right as you drive down the highway. the vehicle was purchased new about one month ago and now has 452 miles on it. dealer just replaced the tracker bar, which was a possible fix provided by corporate. however, only a slight difference was made to the steering problem after this repair. very unsafe when driving on the freeway doing 65-70 mph. service manager stated the only thing corporate has listed so far to replace, if this issue arises, is the tracking bar.
Over 50 mph very difficult to keep in lane -- wandering issue + dead zone in steering. had to install aftermarket parts to help correct wandering to be able to drive it on the highway. better now but still had dead zone "slop" in steering wheel. the build quality is so poor that the torque specs had to be checked and the alignment was way off from factory. i have had many new vehicles over the years and this is the cheapest made and has the worst quality of all! these new jl jeeps have a real problem with being able to keep them driving straight over 50 mph. i have had other jeeps tj, xj, jk and none are this bad. check the wrangler jl forums and see the thousands of complaints on the steering. additionally jeep had a recall on the steering stabilizer and the dealer installed it upside down. told them it was wrong and they were unhappy with me because i pointed it out. this was after i told the service advisor that it needed to be installed in the proper direction and all he said was we know what we are doing , we do thais all the time. total incompetence from the factory to the dealers. picked this 2018 up early july 2019 and noticed the problem on the way home.
Keep wrangler death wobble, cause me to swerve off the road while my two young children were in the car. since then my daughter had been complaining about neck pains. my neck and back also has been in pain since then. going to seek medical treatment.
The vehicle has 800 miles on it and has never been offroad but there is vibration and loose steering, it's my wife's daily commuter so it doesn't even see potholes yet i checked and the track bar can be moved around by hand on a brand new vehicle. she experianced death wobble at 65mph twice which prompted me to check the bar.
While stepping on the brakes, the service shifter light comes on, power steering goes out, then the dashboard goes crazy with all sorts of warnings blinking and dinging: sway bar, stability control, blind spot alert, auto park, etc. temp goes up and down, speedometer goes crazy. when the vehicle is shut off and re-started, it usually starts as normal. most occurrences have been when slowing down (in line at a drive thru, approaching a stoplight). the jeep has been in the shop 4 times. this service shifter late first came on june 23 and it occurred four times that day.first they repaired the power steering. the problem happened again and they replaced the module in the steering column. the problem happened again and the dealership could not duplicate the problem. it happened again and the vehicle had to be towed to the dealership where it is still sitting
Purchased new 2018 wrangler. steering has play side to side. vehicle will not respond to correction until you reach the threshold of the steering wheel play to either side. may be dangerous in certain conditions. no recall found. did find numerous online sites, videos, and blogs documenting this issue, but jeep seems to think everything is ok.
Wrangler jl sport wonders from one side of the lane to the other. while this is happening if i hit a bump it will launch the vehicle into the other lane or on the should. i shouldn't feel afraid to drive a vehicle i spent $52,000.00. very disappointed!! the best part is if you ask a mechanic about it at the dealership they know nothing about it or heard of any problems, what a joke!!
More than once i have experienced extreme shaking of the steering wheel and vehicle. it happens when i am on the highway and hit a bump. each time it has happened i tense up for fear of losing control. i have to slow down to about 35mph for it to stop. this is not safe to do on the highway. it is also illegal to do as the minimum speed limit is 45mph. i brought my jeep into the dealership on 11/11/2019 for an oil change, tire rotation and to have some dampener thing installed due to a recall. the very next day it did the same thing. i have now been trying to avoid going over 45 mph.
Brand new jeep with 300 miles wanders when driving over 50-60 mph. i have to keep on correcting the steering when driving at high speeds. please see the other complaints on steering as i am experiencing the same issues.
Jeep jl wrangler, steering loose and jeep wanders at highway speed. attention nhtsa: this is not a jeep thing! people have been able to solve this! if solvable, then by definition not inherent to any platform! solves include a combination of new steering gear, new tension bolt that connects the steering wheel to the gear, and new track bar. fca is getting away with substandard steering at the hand of its techs that state that this is just a jeep thing when it is not! force a recall now or face blood on your hands! this is fixable! this is why we hired you to do this job! act now! this is your moment!
Have had my jeep serviced twice for it wandering all over the road for little to zero improvement. i recently took a 6.5 hour highway trip and it was absolutely horrific all over the road very unsafe and there was little wind and dry roads so weather was not the cause. can not stay straight constantly making adjustments when you should be going straight. it is all the time in town and highway but highway driving is amplified the effects. i feel it is unsafe and we had it parked for about 40 days not using it because my fiance and i feel it's u safe. after the most recent service still absolutely no change in fact the highway driving is much worse.
Loose steering with too much play in either direction. very dangerous at higher speeds and causes wandering all over the road. also, steering wheel locks after turning the wheel all the way to the left and back center. i was driving, made a u-turn and tried to bring the wheel back center, but the wheel locked and almost caused me to get into a collision. i am now not driving the car because it is not safe. i have been to the dealership 6 times. no one will help. thousands of others have these issues yet nothing is being done. i made two videos of the loose steering and wheel locking. i will attach the links below loose steering: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iggtrxglno0 steering wheel lock: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyluagxle_q
We own a 2018 jeep wrangler unlimited (4-door) rubicon, original owner, currently has 2625 miles on it. the vehicle wanders on all road surfaces. the steering is very loose and it is difficult to keep in in the lanes while in motion. this excessive play in the steering makes for a very uncomfortable to drive as you are constantly correcting the direction of the vehicle to keep it from going off the roadway or into another vehicle. this steering issue is very dangerous. i have taken it back to the dealer for repair and they have found nothing.
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 jeep wrangler. while driving various speeds, there was a lot of play in the steering wheel. there were no warning indicators illuminated. cross chrysler jeep fiat (1501 gardiner ln, louisville, ky 40218) repaired the vehicle per nhtsa campaign number: 18v343000 (steering); however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was contacted and informed about the recall. the failure mileage was 11,000.
Electronic sway bar disconnect is affected by water and becomes inoperable. now the vehicle is unsafe to drive since this motor affects the front sway bar and vehicle stability and is not being covered under warranty do to water damage. this motor is visible from under the vehicle and in a location that is exposed to the elements.
The 2018 jeep wrangler unlimited jl has an issue with "loose steering" or " over correcting". when trying to keep the jeep in a straight line it tends to "drift". causing the driver to constantly move the steering wheel. it is worse in areas with hills or roads with many turns. driving down the highway in speeds in excess of 40 mph poses an issue when going around a curve. if the driver turns the wheel even the slightest bit too close you can end up in a wall.
Just bought a 2018 wrangler jl leftover/ brand new off the lot. i immediately noticed that the steering is very loose and difficult to control. this is especially true in wind or if driving 55 miles per hour or more. my husband refuses to drive the car because he feels unsafe doing so. i get very nervous as well. i'm constantly having to adjust the wheel to stay on the road. the second issue is that sometimes when i set the cruise control it will just keep going past my designated speed i chose unless i turn it off. lastly my car seems to not shift gears down. it throttles and revs. when i took it to be looked at i was told it's no big deal. well it is! even my local mechanic said he feels that it's not switching properly between gears. i've waited 22 years to buy my first wrangler and i paid $42000 for it. it should not do any of this! it's brand new. it's also a safety hazard. i could get into a major accident! i need help with these things please. stand behind your product. this is my first wrangler but my 4th jeep. i also talked my mom and brother into buying new jeeps the same week i did last month! my contact is [xxx]. [xxx]. i'd like call back so someone can help me. thank you information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tt
Steering wheel problems. car had less than 200 miles is hard to stay in straight line. too much and excessive steering. dangerous to drive.
While at highway speeds, the steering wobbles on bumps.
Steering wheel locking up while driving causing the vehicle to not turn left. also lots of play in the steering causing the vehicle to sway.
While driving the steering is loose, the vehicle wanders and is difficult to maintain my lane at highway speeds. it has been to the dealer 5 times for this issue.they have completed the tsb concerning the issue and it has not repaired the problem. this needs to be investigated and repaired before someone is hurt or killed because of it. my vehicle is currently parked because my wife is afraid to drive it.
While driving at normal highway speeds (60mph and above) each overpass, seam or pothole in the road causes my 2018 wrangler to shake and vibrate uncontrollably. at times this "death wobble" is so violent that the only way to make it stop is to pull over and come to a complete stop. imagine trying to keep control of your jeep while it's shaking uncontrollably and you have to cross 3 lanes of traffic to pull over. this was my experience on 5.4.19. this was not the first time. this is also after the dealership and manufacturer have "repaired" the issue on 3 previous occasions.
Steering is loose and vehicle is difficult to drive straight. vehicle wanders around the road and causes vehicle to sway into other lanes.
After installation of the jeep manufactured and warrantied 2 inch mopar lift kit at the jeep dealership, the vehicle's steering wheel and front end will violently shake after hitting a bump at speeds of 50 miles per hour and above. this was most commonly seen when driving over bridges at speeds of around 50 mph. the vehicle was taken to the dealer when they claimed they could not duplicate the results. i then had to risk my own safety to demonstrate to a technician that the problem was indeed happening. this oscillation of the steering and suspension components is extremely dangerous and requires me to come to a complete stop before the vehicle will stop shaking. i also have little to no control over the vehicle when this happens until the vehicle has been slowed down substantially. the problem is ongoing and has yet to be solved.
While driving about 65 miles per hour i ran over a bridge expansion joint on a bridge approximately ten or more times during my trip. on three occasions when i ran over the expansion joint the front of the vehicle began to shake violently up through the steering wheel causing me to leave my lane of travel. i feel if a car was next to me at the time i could have crashed. applying brakes and slowing ended the problem each time.
I had a previous report of the death wobble. this report is for severely loose steering. too much play in the steering wheel. the jeep wanders all over the road and it's a serious safety issue. the steering stabilizer/dampener has been replaced four times now and a new track bar was installed and also the pcm has been flashed. nothing is working and this problem could potentially cause a serious accident. the dealer says 'well it's a short wheel base two door jeep so....'. i'm not buying that. i've had two door jeeps in the past and it was never an issue. researching this there are many others with the same problem!
Vehicle wanders at highway speed. excessive play in steering requiring constant driver correction. damper recall has been performed and steering box and track bar replaced some improvement but stability at highway speeds still concern due to play in wheel and driver input required to track straight
Steering is loose and vehicle is difficult to drive straight. vehicle wanders around the road and causes vehicle to sway into other lanes.
Death wobble, around 70mph a bump can cause violent shaking of the steering wheel. only stops when you slow down to 40mph or less, making it very dangerous when you are on the highway.
Upon taking delivery of the vehicle on the ride home i couldn't keep the car straight. it kept wandering through the lane and had to drive it with 2 hands. i notified dealer and they said it's a jeep thing but this is far from a jeep thing. car feels unsafe to drive as it keeps moving left to right.
Vehicle has odd steering characteristics and, at times, can be difficult to keep in lane at highway speeds. vehicle has been this way since purchase. local dealership claims this is normal. jeep, however, has issued multiple recalls for wrangler steering problems.
