Problems with 2005 Jeep Wrangler FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On average, the 2005 Jeep Wrangler starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM and its various aspects after 76 454 miles.

Recently reported FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM problems on 2005 Jeep Wrangler

Fuel spill occurs during fill ups. fuel will spill onto the ground as well as spew outward from the vehicle. fuel has gotten onto my clothing and skin on two occasions. *tr

When i fill up my tank at the gas station, the auto fill won't click off until the gas tank is overfilled, and sprays out, then runs down the side of my jeep. it doesn't matter if i use their auto fill notches and walk away or hold it by hand, the gas wont click off until the tank has overflowed. it spills between a liter and a pint each time. *tr

Tank overflows and sends gas flying through the air, all over the person pumping, and the ground, at every fill up. *tr

Automatic transmission shift linkage cable broke. unable to start vehicle with transmission selected in either "park" or "neutral." shift linkage cable replaced by dealer, not under warranty or recall. *tr

My contact with you today involves a fuel spit back problem during refueling on my 2005 jeep wrangler (tj). i am aware of many bulletins and recalls regarding this problem, my vehicle is included in one such bulletin however falls outside of any coverage for repair of this problem by the manufacturer. my question is; how can the manufacturer cover repairs and provide an extended or in some cases a lifetime warranty on this flaw for 2007 and 2008 vehicles and ignore all of the other model years that have the same flaw? this repair will cost me nearly one thousand dollars whereas some people get the problem resolved at no cost to them. please help. *tr

When filling up at the gas station, gasoline spills out all over the place, runs down the side of the vehicle and spills out onto the ground. *tr

Every time i fill up with gas, the rollover check valve fails and gas gushes out onto ground. this is a fire hazard and enviromental issue. *tr

Fuel system does not respond to a shut-off mechanism. every time we fill up the gas on our 2005 wrangler unlimited, gas will come back out and spill down the side of the jeep and sometimes spray surrounding area. so if you are standing anywhere near it, most likely you will have gas all over yourself. we are the second owners of the 2005 wrangler that only had 5500 miles on it when we bought the jeep and now have about 7500 miles and have seen this issue every time we fill the gas tank. dealership wants $1400.00 to replace plus labor. *tr

I had just bought an unlimited 2005 jeep wrangler- the first time i stopped to get gas i found out very quickly that there is an overflow problem with these models. everyone who is a jeep owner knows about it and says there are some fixes, but they are lengthy. everyone who isn't wonders why it hasn't been recalled and fixed. this is an ongoing problem that could pose a large hazard at gas stations. *tr

When refueling and filling up gas tank, the automatic gas pump nozzle does not shut-off in time resulting in gas overflow/spilling. typically a few cups of gas will spill out before nozzle shuts off the gas flow. have tried filling at different gas stations, with different pumps, and positioning nozzle in different positions but result is the same and gas overflows. only way to prevent is to guess how much gas is needed -- then stop pump before tank is full -- then fill remainder of tank with pump on slowest setting. *tr

Every time i pump gas it overflows. the flapper in the top of the gas tank isn't working correctly. this is apparently an issue for the majority of 05 and 06 models. chrysler decided to fix the 07-08 models and do nothing for the 05-06. *tr

My jeep overflows gasoline everytime i fill up at the pump! *tr

Our 2005 jeep wrangler has been overflowing when filling up the gas tank for two months now. there is no warning and the gas spews out of the nozzle/tank. the gas often gets all over my shoes, hands and pants. we are not ignoring the shut off click, since this problem began there hasn't been one. for our own safety we wait until the gas light is on to get gas and then estimate how much gas we need in order to stay gas free. we have researched the problem and it seems to be a common problem with jeep and chrysler vehicles involving the inlet check valve, yet they have done nothing. *tr

Every time i fill-up, gas blows out of the filler neck, about 3 to 6 oz. *tr

Fueling up at the gas station, cannot fill up without gas spitting out onto me, the vehicle, and the ground. no other vehicle i've owned has this problem, including an 03 jeep wrangler and a 2000 dodge durango, both of which in more recent model years have had a recall for this same problem. it is an environmental and health hazard, as fuel is a carcinogen. *tr

Recently purchased the wrangler used. fuel spill every time you fill the gas tank. when the fuel pump clicks off fuel shoots out the fill spout. *tr

Filled up fuel tank, when it got to the top it didn't shut off without spilling out. now it does it all the time. *tr

While fueling this vehicle, as the tank got full and the pump shut off, the fuel belched out, at first i thought it was the gas pump so i have tried different gas stations, it has now gotten to the point where it does it every time, at every different gas station. i looked on the internet and found that it is a common problem with plenty of video to support these complaints, what is difficult to understand is why you aren't doing anything about it. other government agencies have forced all gas stations to limit/recover fugitive emissions, but all this video evidence isn't enough to support a recall of all affected vehicles? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep wrangler 4x4. the contact stated that after filling the fuel tank to capacity, gasoline would spill from the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where they advised him that the fuel tank was defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 52,000. the current mileage was approximately 54,000. the vin was unavailable.

Each time i fill up my gas tank with fuel, the fuel overflows out of the tank. as i am not the original owner of the vehicle, i am filing this complaint only after learning from many other jeep owners they also experience this issue. it seems very dangerous for this amount of fuel to be spilled (and spewed) from the gas tank, the only way to prevent it is to monitor the gallons going in and stop it manually which, unfortunately, is not always a successful approach. thanks! *tr

We purchased the vehicle used with around 12,000 miles last year. ever since we bought it, it will run over when pumping gas. it does not cut off so you just have to listen to stop it. i googled and saw there have been issues with other years. it would be great if the problem could be fixed. *tr

Each time i fill the gas tank, gas gushes out all over the side of my jeep and sometimes on myself. i am afraid that sooner or later i'm going to catch on fire. please help. *tr

Each and every time i fill the vehicle up with gasoline, the fuel spills out of the gas tank all over the vehicle. it has ruined my fender flare not to mention the gasoline on the ground as a result of the faulty gas tank. this happens every single time i fill up the vehicle (regardless of the gas station). the only way to stop this is to handle it is in a manual process (not using the pump handle switch to keep pump on), however that still does not stop the fuel from filling out the tank. this has ruined some of my clothes and as mentioned, is creating plenty of pollution every spill. this is a common problem with wranglers as it is commonly reported in online forums. i am asking for chrysler's assistance in getting this issue addressed and the fuel tank replaced. *tr

Also fuel tank overflow shutoff valve does not work. when filling up gas tank, fuel overflows on car and person pumping gas every time the tank is filled. multiple years of jeep wranglers were recalled, including many 05's for this same problem.

Every-time i fill up my gas tank it overflows and spills out violently. *tt

When fueling the jeep the gas overflows. even though we are very careful it is impossible to gas up the car and not have gas all over your hands and the ground. the gas drips down the side of the car and is a serious safety concern. we have tried different pumps and different angles to no avail. it is not human error as we have other vehicles that we never have a problem at the same pumps with any other car. *tr

When fueling, gas overflows every time no matter how careful in fueling and when pump shuts off automatically it gushes out creating hazardous situation ,not to mention environmental issues. *tr

Fuel dumps out of filler hose when close to filled up, has been happening since i first filled ,now almost 5 years have still seen no solution unless i have do myself. *tr

At any refueling, before the fuel pump auto shut off is engaged, there is fuel spit back out of the fuel filler. it runs down the corner panel and behind the left rear fender flare, as well as onto the ground. depending on what setting you have the pump handle set to (high, medium, low), depends on how much fuel is spat back out. *tr

Approximately 1 year after purchasing my used 2005 wrangler, gas started to overflow from the filler tube upon fueling. the first time this occurred, i thought it was a defective pump shut-off at the station until it happened the next time and the next and so on. i have been dealing with this for at least 2 years with no resolve. a good amount of gas will spill out of the tank once the tank has reached capacity, spraying gas all over the vehicle and the ground. this can be minimized by slowing the flow from the nozzle, but there is no way to tell when the tank is going to be full or not. this is not only a safety issue as there is now a volatile substance on the ground, but an environmental issue as there is now gasoline that could easily enter the ground water. it is unacceptable that chrysler is aware of this problem, has admitted that it affects other model years yet refuses to accept further responsibility. *tr

Gas tank overflows everytime i fill up. doesn't matter what gas station i go to, the gas always spits out of the tank and all over the side of the car before the pump stops. something is wrong with the tank or an internal check valve which should prevent this. i can never fill the gas tank up full because of this issue. the only fix i have found through research is a brand new gas tank, which is ridiculous. *tr

I am experiencing fuel spit-back during every refueling of my vehicle. i purchased a replacement tank and the problem has again occurred on the replacement fuel tank. i am considering a class action lawsuit against chrysler to fix this problem with 2005-2006 jeep wranglers as well as the 2007-2008 jeep wranglers. i know a recall for this same issue is in effect for the 2007-2008 jeep wranglers. here is a link to an edmonds article: http://www.autoobserver.com/2011/02/chrysler-replaces-some-fuel-tanks-for-gas-spit-back.html here is a link to a jeep forum with numerous complaints for the same issue and it is not isolated to the 2007-2008 jeep wranglers: http://www.wranglerforum.com/f19/overflow-at-the-gas-pump-46693-2.html. *tr

When refueling the vehicle, the automatic shutoff does not engage from the vehicle itself properly, causing fuel to continue to flow and out and all over the side of the vehicle. it also sprays out and on the operator fueling the vehicle. there is a technical service bulletin from jeep about the issue, but action has not been taken by the manufacturer. i request this be repaired under warranty. material safety data sheets classify gasoline as a hazardous material, known to cause health defects when in contact with skin, and environmental impacts when improperly contained. *tr

When fueling vehicle tank overflows leaving gasoline on side of vehicle, on self (hands, clothing, shoes, etc.). not only is this uneconomical, but unsafe, unhealthy, and environmentally unsound. i originally brought my vehicle in for repair in may of 2010, the dealer claimed the evaporation canister was clogged so they replaced the canister and filter for almost $300. four months later, in october of 2010, i was having the exact same problem and returned to the dealer. they then claimed the roll over valve was stuck in the open position and i now needed a new fuel tank for almost $800. i declined and was charged $100 for their trouble. i now don't ever fill the tank completely. i have found numerous complaints about this problem online in different forums and now here on this website. i do believe jeep needs to be held responsible for this obviously ongoing problem.

Every time i fill up the gas some spill outs. fuel shut off does not work. every time i fill up at every station. *tr

Unless i stop fueling prior to a complete fill up, gas will spill out. i have mentioned this to a couple different jeep service advisors at my local dealerships they are not aware of what is causing it. this can be extremely dangerous and needs to be addressed by chrysler.

Spits fuel every time i fill up, no matter where or how slowly i fill it. 3-5 ounces of fuel spit back out every fill up, on first auto shut off occasionally fuel is expelled forcefully enough to splash on objects18-24 inches away. *tr

When filling up the jeep with gasoline, gas pumps will not click off, and the fuel tank overfills, but sprays out with great force soaking the individual pumping gasoline. *tr

Every fill up the fuel splashes back out of the fill tube, spilling about a cup of fuel down the side of the vehicle and onto the ground.this happens regardless of the fill rate. i have looked the fuel system over to the best of my ability, and can't come up with the cause. *tr

Fuel filler overflows when fueling tank, every time. *tr

Gas tank overflows when filling. occurs at both high/low speed autofill. will overflow at manual fill as well, unless you hear gurgling and shut off pump before overflow. *tr

When filling the fuel tank, the pump will shut off but fuel will spill out of the fuel filler access onto the side of the jeep and the ground. *tr

The vehicle will spill gas out of the filler neck every time after the pump handle shuts off. it doesn't matter if i use the lowest setting on the gas pump or if i manually use as little pressure as possible. it overfills every single time and gas pours out of the fill spout running down the body of the vehicle on my hand on my clothes and on the ground. *tr

Happens periodically, no forewarnings just happens, always when going slow or reversing like to park or back into parking spot.....unintended acceleration....scares the bejebers out of the person driving, since you never know when it's gonna happen.....i bought the jeep used (like maybe a year old) with 14,--- miles on it...now have about 52,--- miles on it....all street driving, no off road driving..has happened from the beginning when i bought it... *tr

When fueling vehicle, fuel will splash out of the fill tube before filler nozzle shuts off. this happens every time i fuel and at different gas stations. i estimate my total fuel spilled over the past decade to be in the area of 300 gallons. *tr

When refueling my jeep has always belched gasoline back out of the fuel filler neck when the gas pump automatically shuts off when the tank gets full. this could easily cause a disaster & my wife is afraid to put fuel in it. i thought that mine was the only one to do this, but talking with other owners, i have discovered that all similar jeeps have the same dangerous defect.

When filling gas tank, gas will overflow out of tank, this has happened since vehicle was brand new. *tr

Every time i fill up with fuel, it spills and splashes all over the place causing puddles of fuel all over the ground and running down the side of my vehicle. *tr
