On average, the 2008 Jeep Liberty starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE and its various aspects after 45 751 miles.

Recently reported FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE problems on 2008 Jeep Liberty

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep liberty. while driving unknown speeds, the check engine indicator illuminated and there was an abnormal sound emerging from the vehicle. the contact inspected underneath the vehicle and noticed that the heat shield became detached and was on the drivetrain. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and it was diagnosed that the fuel injectors needed to be replaced. the vehicle was taken to the local dealer (port jeff chrysler jeep dodge ram, 5130 nesconset hwy, port jefferson station, ny 11776) where the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in a recall. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the issue and did not assist. the failure mileage was 188,112.

Fuel system, after filling tank with gas vehicle stalls after driving away from pump. vehicle stalls in traffic, at light and in intersections after filling up. my incidents have been many one time while merging into traffic from gas station, at a red light and has stalled right in middle of intersection with traffic. unknown the problem but vehicle is hesitant to restart after the shut down for approxinately 1 minute. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep liberty. when the fuel tank was filled, the fuel spilled to the ground instead without warning. the failure was not diagnosed. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 164,000. updated 06/10/16*lj

Gas tank overflows at fill up. always at costco and many other stations. attendants have attempted to pump for me and had same results stating that it is a common problem for jeeps. *tr

2008 jeep liberty 4x4 purchased used with 18,000 miles. when re-fueling the pump will shut off automatically and gas will burp out every time. sometimes it is a lot of gas and very dangerous. i've seen this issue all over the internet. why isn't something being done about this? *tr

Whenever i fill the gas tank the gas pump clicks off when the tank is full, but gas surges up the spout and dumps on the ground. this has nothing to do with the type of gas (premium or regular, or ethanol or no ethanol) or the setting on the pump handle (fast or slow). this is a fire, explosion risk as well as an environmental problem. i really don't expect you to do anything until after people are hurt or killed, but when that happens i want to be able to say "you knew about the problem, and didn't care". *tr

Every time i fill up my 2008 jeep liberty just as the automatic shutoff engages the gas comes out of the fill pipe and down the side of my vehicle. it does not matter where i fill up this always happens. i was beginning to think i was the only one with this problem but i see there are others. in my opinion i feel that jeep should check this problem without cost to the owners as a gesture of good public relations. my jeep was purchased in november 2012 as a pre-owned vehicle from a jeep dealership. *tr

When i pump gas the system does not stop, the gas continues to pump once the tank is full. gas runs down the side of the jeep and is a huge safety issue. no recall on this issue so i would have to pay myself this needs be investigated. *tr

Check engine light come on and gas cap light also come on the auto start will not work & dash light gets real dime also gps light get real dime/ and there is a real strong smell of gas that comes inside the vehicle while going down the road. the vehicle has been to 4 difference chrysler dealer ship and computer has been replaced sensor have all been replaced gas tank replaced gas cap replaced .this vehicle has been for these problem 11 times and has never been fixed called chrysler customer service 6 different times all we get is the run around . the dealer ships drive the vehicle and have put 1,500 mile on the vehicle driving it. need some know to why this can not be fixed. *tr

While putting gas in the tank i have to put it in very slow or it will shut off, then when the gas tank gets close to full gas will gush out. also some times i smell gas inside the vehicle. *tr

When filling the vehicle up with gasoline, it spews out of the intake, draining all over the vehicle and the ground of the gas station. not only is this a waste of a resource and money but it is very dangerous as one spark could ignite the entire gas station killing innocent children and other citizens. this is a very common problem, there are many complaints all over this site and many others. this problem needs to be resolved before people are hurt. *tr

Fuel shoots out of inlet when filling gas tank. during one of the many incidents the fuel shot out about 18 inches from the filler inlet. *tr

When filling my jeep at multiple gas stations i have experienced overflow. it runs down the side of the car and all over the ground. it has happened numerous times at different stations. it seems dangerous and is obviously a waste of money. *tr

Every time i fill my fuel tank the gasoline overflows and spills all over the vehicle and ground. this will happen when i fill automatically or manually. *tr

My 2008 jeep liberty has overflowed fuel when filling the tank 3 out of the 6 times i have filled it since purchased on 11/28. it has happened at several different gas stations. when the pump kicks off there is between 2-8 ounces of fuel that spits back around the handle with a fair amount of pressure. the area underneath the filler cap is soaked and a large puddle forms on the ground. i am concerned that at some point a fire may result. i also feel i must wash the car after every incident because i worry about the gas causing a paint defect. *kb

I purchased a used 2008 jeep liberty in may of 2011. everything was fine until mid-december 2011 while i was filling up the gas tank. the pump shut off automatically but gas spouted out of the fill all over the pump handle and my hand. it's a considerable amount of gas spilling down the side of the vehicle and puddling on the ground. this now happens every time i fill the tank unless i try to cut it off early. this is a safety issue because of the danger of spilled gas and an major inconvenience. i see hundreds of similar complaints online so clearly this is not an isolated problem. i strongly urge nhtsa to investigate this issue and compel chrysler to correct the problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep liberty. while refueling the vehicle the contact noticed that the fuel spilled out of the filler neck. the failure recurred every time the contact would refuel the vehicle. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

After over 3 years of no problems when fueling our liberty, we began to have gas spew out at every fill-up. the pump does not shut off when the tank is full, and gas comes back out forcefully enough to hit the person pumping the gasoline. *tr

Every time i fill the liberty up with fuel is overflows and spills out. it does not matter if i pump the fuel fast or slow, it spills out every time. this is an extremely dangerous situation for me, my family and everyone around me when i put fuel in. *tr

Large amount of fuel violently splashes out of fuel fill tube every time the vehicle is filled up. fuel splashes all over the side of the vehicle and the person filling it. this is a dangerous malfunction of the fuel system. *tr

Safety concern: while filling up my 2008 jeep liberty the gas pump shuts off automatically, but a large amount of gas spills out of the filler tube all over the ground, vehicle, and on the person pumping the gas. this occurs every time i fill up. this seems to be a common problem and is very dangerous. *tr

While filling with fuel, when almost full, fuel would gush out of the filler. this happened repeatedly. *tr

A significant amount of gas spills out of the fuel tank opening after the automatic shut-off of the pumps gas flow. this occurs almost every time i fill up. i now have to only allow the tank to fill up 3/4 full to avoid spills. *tr

When filling up at a gas station, the gas tank over flows before the pump stops. i originally thought it was a broken pump, however, i have now filled up over 4 times at 4 different gas stations and the problem continues to happen. this most recent time i have lost around 1/2 gallon of gas on the ground. i am also concerned with the effect of the gas on my paint/car body. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep liberty. the contact stated that after refueling, fuel would spill back out from the filler neck. the vehicle was not inspected by a dealer nor repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was approximately 40,000. updated 01/24/12*lj the consumer stated when he filled the vehicle up with gas, it splashed back out. the dealer replaced the fuel fill tube. updated 01/25/12

The last 3 times i have filled the gas tank on my vehicle, gas has overflowed onto the ground. after the 2nd time, the check engine light came on. i brought it to the dealership and was advised the code read that the filler neck was faulty and needed to be replaced. i advised them that i had an issue with gas overflowing onto the ground when filling up and was advised it "may" be fixed by the new filler neck since there is a sensor in there. i had the filler neck replaced. i filled the jeep again today, roughly a week after having the filler neck replaced, and again gas overflowed and leaked down the side of my jeep and onto the ground. up until this point, when filling my jeep, the gas pump would click off when the tank was full. i have gone to three different gas stations so it is not a problem with the pump at the station. *tr

When filling gas tank it splashes out and get all over the jeep and the person filling the tank. *tr

At the end of filling gas tank, gas backwashes out of the filling tube down the side of the car and onto the ground. *tr

A significant amount of gas spills out of the spout after the automatic shut-off of the pump's gas flow. gas spills down the vehicle, onto the ground and onto the person pumping gas. *kb

While filling up my 2008 jeep liberty the gas pump shuts off automatically as it should have but, a large amount of gas spills out of the gas tank fill tube all over the ground, vehicle, and on the person pumping the gas when holding the nozzle grip manually. this occurs every time i fill up and occurs even when manually holding the fuel pump nozzle. i filed a complaint through mycarstats.com but noticed that the reports on this issue have started to increases quite a bit since my report a few months ago. the complaints are spread throughout many complaint forums on the internet. this seems to be a huge problem across the board and is a very dangerous issue since it is dealing with a highly combustible substance. many have taken this up with various dealerships and have gotten nowhere. this is where the government needs to step in and get this issue on the recall list for jeep liberty's and wrangler's. *tr

After fueling the vehicle, a substantial amount of fuel splashes back out all over my hand, the vehicle, and the ground. this is not due to over filling, even if i try to stop it early, fuel still splashes back out. this is very dangerous and needs to be addressed by chrysler-jeep. *tr

Every time i go to fill my tank with gas there is a spill over. i have been to multiple different filling stations and get the same result every time. gasoline always runs down the side of the car as the tank reaches fuel capacity. gasoline spills out of the tank, down the side of the jeep, on to the ground, and even gets on my hands, clothes, and shoes. this is totally unacceptable! i have never had such an issue with something as simple as fueling a vehicle. i have owned this vehicle for less than 2 months. i purchased the vehicle used from carmax. i plan on contacting them regarding this problem. i have read other complaints online for the same year and model as my jeep. i feel that this is a major defect that warrants a total recall on all 2008 jeep liberty models. i don't like having to worry about ingesting gasoline when i eat because my hands were covered in gasoline. i don't like breathing the noxious fumes while i'm inside my car because fuel from a defective fuel tank has spilled on to my clothes and shoes. *tr

Every time i fill the gas tank, fuel gushes out of the filler neck onto the side of the vehicle and onto the ground. most times, the automatic fuel shutoff a the gas pump .... at various stations ... does not stop the flow. at other times, fuel gushes out even if the pump shuts off. i have tried slowing the rate fuel goes into the tank. sometimes this works. other times, it doesn't. the only way to avoid this potentially dangerous situation is to try to calculate how much fuel it will take to fill the vehicle and then stop the flow myself a couple of gallons early. there is a jeep tsb out on this problem. and there have been numerous complaints. the fuel spillage issue is dangerous and should be a recall item. *tr

After filling the vehicle with fuel a significant amount of gas spits back out of the filler tube. this is not from topping off as it happens when the pump handle automatically shuts off. also has happened at multiple gas stations. very hazardous and dangerous. *tr

I bought my jeep in june with just over 36000 miles. it was previously a rental vehicle. everything was fine until about september when i filled gas and the pump clicked off and gas came out all over at about 42,000 miles. i thought it was the gas pump, but then i went to other stations and it happened every time. i was going to bring it in to have it looked at but i see other people have the same problem. it is very irritating to have it happen every time! please have a recall! *tr

Gas tank overflows after it is filled. jeep service told me it is caused by a cut-off valve defect no longer covered by warranty and that the repair costs $750.00 and involves replacing the entire fuel tank. i see from the internet that this problem is common to this vehicle. have you previously been made aware of it and is it the subject of a recall? it is obviously a very dangerous situation as the gas literally spews out of the vehicle. *tr

Every time i fill up with gas, the gas spews from the filler neck when the tank is full. this happens whether the nozzle shuts off automatically or if i shut it off manually to try to prevent it from spewing out. this happens no matter which gas station i fill up at, whether it's near home or out of town. i have driven many, many makes of automobiles since 1956 (that's 56 years) and this is the first vehicle that ever gave me this problem.

Every time i fill up my jeep the pump will shut off when the tank is full and i remove the pump and gas will bubble out of the tank and runs down the side of the vehicle. *kb

2008 jeep liberty limited 4x4, "burps" gasoline out of the gas tank every time i fill up with gas. i have filled up at multiple gas stations and every time the pump stops filling when full, but the jeep spits out gas after the pump stops. i can't believe there is no recall on this problem, since i see this as a very serious safety concern. *tr

Every time i fill up my 2008 jeep liberty the gas tank does not shut off properly and gas spills out all over my jeep and the ground. this happens every time i get gas and it doesn't matter what gas station i go to. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep liberty. the contact stated the while refueling the vehicle, fuel spilled from the pump and onto the ground. the failure was experienced numerous times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnosed that located the failure at the fuel tank and advised that it would need to be replaced. the manufacturer was contacted (case number 21321679) and advised that they would cover fifty percent of the cost for repairs. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 27,355 and the current mileage was 29,000.

Just bought a 2008 jeep liberty. everytime i fill the gas tank up it spits gas out all over the place. both automatic and manual operation (fill up), it does not matter. why??? *tr

When filling with gas, when the pump shuts off, gas spits back out the filler neck, runs down the side of our vehicle and makes a puddle on the ground.

We purchased a 2008 jeep liberty used from a toledo dealership in april of 2011. the fuel auto shut-off does not work at all, and every time we top off the tank fuel ends up "burping" all over the side of the vehicle, onto the ground, and in some cases onto the person fueling the vehicle. even the salesperson complained that she got fuel on her when we asked her to top it off before we drove it off the lot. this seems to be the exact same issue that we had with our 2007 jeep wrangler unlimited. however, there was a safety recall for that and a new fuel tank and neck had to be installed that fixed the problem. it seems to me that there should be a safety recall on the 2008 jeep liberty to fix what seems to be an identical problem that was recalled and remediated. every time i've contacted the original and local dealerships regarding the issue i've been told that there is nothing wrong with the vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep liberty. the contact stated that while refueling the vehicle with gasoline, the fuel spilled back out onto the side of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated they would repair the vehicle if the contact would pay a $200 deductible fee. the manufacturer was contact who stated they would replace the fuel tank, but at the contacts expense. there were no recalls for the vehicle. the failure mileage was 43,000. updated 06/16/11 *bf updated 02/03/2012 *ln *tr

While filling 2008 jeep liberty, past 6 times, the gas tends to seep out. mileage when started ~43k miles. even when the rubber cover over the gas nozzle fits snug with the throat of the gas inlet, gas has leaked. *tr

During fueling at the end of the process the fuel pump will "click" off. after the click, a fair amount of fuel spills from the fuel tank down the side of my vehicle and the ground. this is a dangerous condition to the environment and a waste of fuel. *kb

I have a 2008 jeep liberty that will not shut off the gas valve when i am pumping gas. i previously had a 2005 jeep liberty that had the same problem. i feel this is a safety issue since gas drips down the side of the car, tire and eventually on the person pumping gas creating a very large puddle of gas that requires cleanup from the gas attendant. this has happened with 2 different styles of jeeps at various gas stations. *tr

I just bought a used 2008 jeep liberty with 32,000 miles. this did not happen until after a few fill ups, but now gas spews out after filling the tank. i gets all over the car, the ground and my shoes. *tr

The gas tank overflows every time fuel is pumped into the vehicle. this happens at all gas stations and regardless of how slowly the tank is filled. the problem started seemingly out of the blue with no accidents or damage to the car prior. gas sprays out of the filler tube as soon as the pump is removed, getting the person wet if they do not know to stand aside. gas also runs down the side of the vehicle. this is both a safety issue and an environmental / emissions issue that should be addressed by jeep. the interior smells of gas for a couple of hours after each overflow incident. we took it in for service and they said the entire gas tank would have to be replaced to fix the valve that has failed. we are out of warranty and feel this should be a safety recall and/or emissions warranty covered item. after looking online for solutions to the problem i have discovered that it is endemic to many jeep liberty and jeep wrangler vehicles made over the past several years. jeep has only offered to fix the problem for wranglers from 2007-08. *tr
