Problems with 2005 Jeep Liberty FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On average, the 2005 Jeep Liberty starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM and its various aspects after 91 577 miles.

Every time we put gas in our 2005 jeep liberty the pump doesn't stop and gas overflows onto the ground and onto the paint. this seems to be a common problem, is there a recall or something that can be done?

I have my brother's 2005 jeep liberty with less than 100,000 miles. it is a very important vehicle to me as he passed from cancer. to date i have filled the car 3x and every time i get a gas gusher coming out of the tank. the last time i was extra careful and still ended up getting gas all over the car and myself. now i try to estimate gallons so it doesn't spray out and i stand off to the side. 600.00 is a lot of money to spend for a new fuel neck replacement. obviously not everyone is reporting this as they are trying to fix it themselves. try googling this on the internet. this is not a safe situation, although gas on the outside dissipates quite quickly. one spark and the gas station could be toast. i am very leery of chrysler & dodge gas tanks, thankfully my magnum which started acting up had a lifetime warranty on the fuel tank, which dodge is not very quick to point out. my magnum just started dying after it was filled up, fixed now i hope. hoping you can come up with a re-call for these jeeps. very disappointed in the fueling up issues.

While filling up the gas tank, the pump automatic shut off is triggered several times before the tank is full and as a result, gas ends up spewing back out of the tank runs down the side of the vehicle to the ground creating a potential fire hazard. it seems like the gas tank is unable to vent the air out quickly enough so the gas comes back out of the tank fill tube.

My car is always overflowing gas when i complete the fuel tank.

Gas tank overflows when filling up gas.

Every time the vehicle is refueled, it does not shut off as it should and gas pours out and all over the ground and down the side of the vehicle. several times it has been so bad that employees of the gas station had to intervene. this is a fire hazard, as well as a environmental problem.

Fuel spills from tank during fill up. i bought this car used and the paint is damaged from the previous spills that have occurred. it is evident this has been a long standing issue with this vehicle.

When fueling vehicle as it finishes filling the gas tank it will spew gas out and over the side of the vehicle.

When fueling, the gas tank sensor fails and causes the gas pump to not automatically stop and gas overflows. luckily i was not standing too close when this happened. also, upon stopping and ignition is off the seatbelt on the drivers side does not retract after unlatching and when getting out of the car the seatbelt gets stuck in the door.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep liberty. after placing fuel in the vehicle, fuel spilled out. the dealer diagnosed that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 31,000.

My gas overflow every time i fill up my tank. this has been happening for a few years and i contacted jeep and was told they would not do anything. this is a safety hazard and could cause a fire and something should be done i have spoken to several jeep owners with this model and they are having the same problem.

Nhtsa recall number 13v-252. chrysler/jeep has never contacted me in reference to this recall. which seems to be very serious since it appears passengers in my vehicle and myself could be killed due to this defect. another example of jeep not caring about their customers. once they get their money they don't know you. i am the only owner of the vehicle and i have not moved so there is no excuse for not contacting me. i am sure they will lie and say they did. if they had i would have had the work done since it involves life and death. all about the bottom line and not caring about people. i would prefer they send me the materials to repair the problem and i will have my mechanic take care of the issue. when i had jeep repair a defective window regulator now that door does not work. i want it done right so have them send me the parts needed to: 115 avenue c, sch. haven, pa 17972.

Fuel overflows gas tank every time vehicle is filled with fuel

Every time the gas tank is filled, gasoline overflows before the automatic fueling nozzle shutoff activates. fuel runs down the side of the vehicle and onto the ground.

While dispensing fuel into the vehicle at a filling station the fuel gushes from the fill port prior to the tank being full. the fuel continues to come out for a few second after the fuel dispensing is stopped. this is completely un safe, wasteful and creates an emissions issue at every fill up.

The car does not shut off fueling when the gas tank is full, causing a large amount of gas to spew out of the car when filling gas every time. causes gasoline to go everywhere, is a fire hazard. (it is not just a little bit of gas, the car is turned off, at the gas pump and at the gas station.)

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep liberty. while the vehicle was parked at the contact's residence, a fuel leak was noticed. the failure recurred several other times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic three times. the vehicle was not diagnosed and the contact did not know what the mechanic replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred several times afterwards. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer stated that there were no recalls for the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 91,935.

Fuel overflows from filler after auto-shutoff of pump occurs. occurs every time fueling operations occurs regardless of fuel station. numerous complaints issue but no service bulletins or recalls. potential fire hazard.

I own a 2005 jeep liberty that has been recalled due to the fuel tank has a chance of experiencing a fuel leak during certain types of rear end collisions. i have returned the vehicle to the dealer and was told that chrysler does not have to make the repairs due to the car having a reconstructed title. i am checking with your agency to find out if that is the truth. i have had recall work done in the past without this issue arising.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep liberty. the contact received a notification of nhtsa campaign number: 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline, structure); however, the recall part was not available. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was not notified of the issue. the contact had not experienced the failure.

Fuel overflow when filling up, spills gas everywhere.

When filling the gas tank the gas pump shuts off but the gas is already pouring out of the vehicle the vehicle doesn't shut off and it over fills the gas and it runs down the side of the vehicle. we bought this second hand and not sure if there was every a recall on it?

Every time my wife or i fill up the gas tank, gas sprays everywhere as the auto-shut-off does not work. the gas tank over-fills every single time and gas spews everywhere, getting on me, down the side of my jeep, and all over the ground. this is a major hazard and could ultimately end up in an explosion. to act as additional support, the fact that gas sprays everywhere is against the law that can be found on the stickers at every gas station gas pump for how to "operate" the gas pump and how to "fill-up" correctly. there needs to be a recall immediately as i know there are many other people who experience this same issue. also, the only reason why i stated the problem began at 147,000 miles is because that was the mileage on the vehicle when i purchased it used.

When ever i fuel this vehicle up fuel spills out wither in an automatic shutoff mode (there's a lot that spills like this) or doing it manually as slowly as pump will allow. i am fearful of a fire or explosion during this process. i looked up on line and in some of the jeep forums this seems to a thing the 2005 jeep liberty does. on one of the forums http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f28/2005-liberty-spills-gas-1184293/ 03-20-2011, 02:08 pm the poster flyordie says "jeep has issued a silent recall on this problem. just so you all know. ***** and moan enough at the dealership and they will fix it on their dime." why is it silent? why don't they just issue the recall and save some one or their father or mother or kid fro being killed when its preventable? i chatted with an online rep from jeep a [xxx] and she gave me a complaint number [xxx]: the case number is [xxx] . this was at their live chat room on owner connect (mopar). at https://mopar.custhelp.com/app/mopar/chat_landing/first_name/[xxx]/last_name/broach/email/standho%40sbcglobal.net/request_source/8 i was told that no one would be contacting me from jeep, all complaints are handled internally. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

We received the notice about the gas/fuel tank potential to catch fire, we took our vehicle to the dealer. the dealer explained that we have too much corrosion on our vehicle to be repaired. the cost to repair exceeds the value of the vehicle, currently we are still driving with a vehicle that may catch fire. we contacted chrysler as we still are paying off the vehicle, we where given the run around until finally one associate told us simply, they will not help you. prior to this recall notice we have constantly had issues when filling up with gas and the gas would leak out in large quantities instead of shutting off. we replaced the oil pan recently after it rusted out, we are about to replace to transmission fluid pan as that is about to rust out, the transmission lines are also rusting and corroded. our jeep may be an 05 but it looks as if its brand new rolling off the line, we take care of our vehicle. we are informed consumers and know there is a recall for chrysler failing to fix the fuel tank explosion issues, when we looked up the vin for our vehicle it was not showing that it is one of the one's being recalled. our vehicle was not repaired and we should be included in this recall. we want to know if our vehicle will be included in the recall. we still have all the paperwork from visiting the dealer. when we took the vehicle up for the recall, the dealership told us that jeep has issues with rust to begin with and that it is a known issue that has yet to be corrected.

At approx 8:00 on the morning of 2/16/15 my 2005 jeep liberty, 3.8l v-6 with automatic transmission began to accelerate out of control while braking for a stop sign. the engine was cold, i had just started it and the temperature was in the mid to upper 50s. i was traveling about 27 mph, and began to slow for the stop. at about 10-15 mph, i noticed the car was no longer slowing down. it seemed as though the brakes stopped working. at the same time, the engine briefly revved on its own. this made the car accelerate. i could not stop at the stop sign and the car accelerated into 50 mph cross traffic. i made a hard right turn to bring the car next to the curb, allowing room for traffic to go by. at the same time, i put the transmission into neutral and that allowed the car to stop. i then put the car into park and revved the engine. it seemed to respond normally at that point (engine would return to idle immediately after taking my foot off the gas). after shifting between part to drive, then reverse, etc. several times, it still seemed to work normally so i continued to work with no further problems. it seemed as though while coming to a stop, the transmission did not down shift or disengage. as the engine rpms were reduced below idle due to the car slowing, the computer control system tried to bring the engine speed back up, causing it to accelerate. a couple of facts - the car has approx. 159,800 miles on the odometer. i purchased it used a few months ago and have put 13,000 miles on it. when i purchased it i had it examined by a mechanic and had all the hoses, belts, etc. replaced. i've had the oil changed at about 5,000 mile intervals. i drive with one foot only, i don't use separate feet for the gas and the brake. the floor mat was not moved before or after this incident, and is not close to the gas pedal. check engine light did not come on. *tr

My son took his 2005 jeep liberty in for the recall where they are supposed to install a trailer hitch to prevent the gas tank from rupturing during a rear end collision. they told him his frame had too much rust on it and that they could not put on the hitch. it is a ny car and he now lives in arkansas. it is in normal condition for a 10 year old car driven year around in upstate ny. i am sure that they have not see as much rust on vehicles in arkansas so i think they are antsy about any rust at all. or, they are looking for any excuse not to do the repair. the amount of rust just speaks to the original design/manufacturing quality if anything. it been over 2.5 years since the recall was first announced and over a year to the point that they had enough hitches. he's been trying to get in for repair the last 6 months. i'm sure 3 years ago there was less rust on the frame but it has taken this long to get it in. is jeep off the hook because of rust? shouldn't jeep be required to fix the problem on all vehicles that are still on the road? shouldn't they have another fix in place for jeeps that can't accept the "hitch" fix? it appears from what i have read that jeep purposely delayed the recall so there were fewer vehicles left on the road and now they get to make the call when there is too much rust. how am i supposed to feel that my son is safe if jeep is allowed to say "pass" on repairing his vehicle. who allowed jeep to decide if a vehicle gets the fix or not. why was jeep allowed to have a fix that can't work on all vehicles still on the road? i have read there have been additional jeep fires and deaths just in the last 6 months and jeep still has the ability to refuse to fix some vehicles. how is jeep being held responsible for these deaths? what options does he have? please let me know what steps i need to take to have his jeep fixed correctly......updated 05/14/15 *bf ...

Typically, when refueling, upon reaching the full level with the fuel pump nozzle in the auto shutoff position the pump nozzle will shut off but gasoline will continue to flow and spew out of the fill tube, down the side of the car, onto the ground and onto me. i've learned to manually stop adding fuel prior to the full level to avoid the risks this situation presents. on 11/22/2014 with the fuel tank nearly empty i attempted to refuel with fuel nozzle in auto position for the initial fill period. after adding approximately 2 gallons gasoline began spewing out. to stop the flow i had to grab the nozzle and disengage the lever manually and in the process soaked my hand, arm and lower leg with gasoline. i attempted to begin refueling again with an identical out come. i moved to a different pump station and twice attempted to fill by manually operating the nozzle lever. gasoline poured and spewed out both times. after having added just 5 gallons total i stopped attempting to add fuel. i am now in the process of finding service/repair before driving the vehicle again as i don't believe it is safe to add fuel in current condition. *tr

Every single time we fill up the car (no topping off), the gas shoots out of the tank back at us. we bought this used car for hoping it would be reliable, but this is a recurring dangerous problem. we lower the flow of fuel from the pump, but it still happens. very dangerous! we have head that the plastic o ring swells with gasoline that contains ethanol and fails to cut the back flow off. the problem with this is, all pumps in our area contain at least 10% ethanol. what good is a car if you can't drive it?! *tr

I have received 3 of the same recall notices (n46 / nhtsa 13v-252) from chrysler dating back to 3/2014. i have followed the notices directions by contacting two of my local dealers to obtain parts and service. each time i call (usually every 2 weeks), i am told that parts are not available yet and to keep checking back. i believe that this resolution is taking more than a "reasonable amount of time" as it is now almost october. i am trying to be patient, but if this defect was important enough to trigger a recall, it's important enough for chrysler to make these parts available asap. my family's safety is very important to me and i feel like chrysler is abandoning their customers and dealers. *tr

Received notice on n46 recall that hitch was available to install to take care of gas tank issue. called local dealer lochmandy motors of elkhart indiana to set up date and time. i was told it was a class 2 hitch with a 2" receiver. i said i was removing my old hitch that was getting rusty . he said he had to order part and i will have to make the appointment when it came in. it came in and i made the appointment for install and again questioned the rating and received the same answer. i stopped in 3 days before my appointment to take a look at the hitch and i was shown the hitch and was told it is not meant to be used to tow. i questioned this and was told he knows i tow and and long as i do not try to tow as big as a house like some people do, then i should be fine. i was again told it was a class 2 and we both mentioned we see the 2" receiver. on day of install i called chrysler main office directly to find out the ratings and they said "no" it not meant to be used to tow and it is just structural. she said the dealer knows this and they have a tag they place on the hitch after install stating this and i must sign off on this. at the time i looked at the hitch at the dealer before install he said there is no tag and 1 will placed on it after install. i called lochmandy motors right back and told them to remove it from my jeep. the public and nhtsa are being mislead by chrysler and the dealer and some one is going to get hurt trying to tow with this unit. how many people with disregard the label or have it removed and then the next owner pays the price. chrysler knows this will happen. i will again have to spend money for an aftermarket part to fix a chrysler fatal death issue. *tr
