June 26,2013 i heard a beep from dash thinking it was letting me know i am low on wash fluid though i noticed my air bag light was on .a minute later while driving it went off, as of today it turns on for a min than back off. i received a recall letter about the airbag issues. i called the dealership and asked about it again, i got a response that they are waiting for replacement parts to come in ,this been months ago. *tr

This vehicle has had electrical issues since i first bought it used 5 years ago. last week i was driving my son and two of his friends home from the beach. i was on the interstate when suddenly the air bag light came on, stayed on for a minute or so, went out, then blinked a few times. i got a creepy feeling and decided to do a search. i am glad i did. i can't believe chrysler has not recalled these jeeps, i think they are going to be paying a lot more in pi claims than it would cost to do the right thing and fix the problem. i am afraid to use my car!!! i called hall jeep here in virginia beach and was told to bring it in so they could do an electrical check on the vehicle. [xxx], the girl i spoke with in the service department told me to drive it up there. i told her i was afraid to after reading about the injuries that have been incurred when the driver and sometimes passenger side air bags deploy for no reason. i am 5'2" tall and must sit close to the steering wheel, increasing the chance of injury or even death. she told me that even i said that the risk of it happening was small, when i asked her how i said that her response was "you said there have only been 87 incidents and there are thousands of them on the road" !!!!! i told her it should only take one for them to be alarmed. she then suggested i have it towed - at my expense of course. this is just unsatisfactory and i will never buy another chrysler product! my husband has been looking at the dodge ram truck but now i am reading about some life threatening issues with them, too! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I was driven in a school zone street and the lights of airbag on and aprox. 2 minutes the air bags exploded in my face, the drive and passengers side, then i stopped the jeep, it smell like something is burning and hot, i did not see fire. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 jeep liberty. the contact stated while driving 45 mph she notice that the air bag warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. the air bag then deployed erroneously. she was able to pull over on the side of the road and called the police. the contact sustained some injury as a result of being struck by the air bag. she was able to drive the vehicle home and contacted the dealer to have the air bag replaced. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 111,000.

Driving late afternoon approx 35 mph. running with max ac on, radio on, lights off and vehicle in 4x2 mode. airbag light illuminated. stopped at stop sign and light turned off. illuminated again after continuing to drive. light stayed on all the way home (approx additional 5 miles). light did not illuminate this morning. i've just taken to dealership for review after reading the recent issues of airbag deployment after air bag light illumination with no impact (yikes). vehicle has approx 30,000 miles on it. i will revise or re-input if dealer doesn't find issue or it deploys with no warning.*jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 jeep liberty. the contact stated that upon starting the ignition, the air bag warning indicator remained illuminated until the engine was turned off. the failure recurred continuously. there was a recall related to the defect under nhtsa campaign id number 12v527000 (air bags). the remedy part was unavailable and the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was unavailable. updated 07/10/13*lj updated 07/18/2013 *js

I was stopped at a red light during rush hour at ~4:20pm waiting to get on the freeway (san felipe and feeder road of 610 / houston, tx). my a/c was running but the radio was off. i heard the warning chime from the dash board and noticed my airbag warning light had come on. roughly 5 seconds later while still stopped at the red light, both the driver and passenger side airbags spontaneously deployed. after the shock, i noticed my hazard lights automatically had come on and i think the engine had shut off. i put the car in park and exited the vehicle. since my hands were on steering wheel during deployment they received the most direct blunt force trauma along with chemical burns (i later went to emergency room that evening). the car was towed to the nearest chrysler dealership. luckily i was not on the freeway traveling 70mph when it happened. *tr

I was injured from unexpected airbag deployment jeep liberty 2003. happened to me yesterday, april 16, 2012. thank god i was driving slowly away from my driveway. i heard a beep, look at the dashboard and saw the airbag light on. my reaction was to put my foot on the break, to lean back and my instinct made me to lift my left arm to cover my face. boom!!! - loud explosion, pain in my arm and covered with a cloud of powder/dust. it took me a couple of seconds to realize what happened. the drivers airbag exploded without any reason at all. seatbelt locked. i turned back to see if my 8 year old son was ok. disoriented, confused, eyes wide open, but ok. just thinking the tragedy it could have been 1 minute later on the highway, definitely a bad accident and many lives compromised. added 1 injured per consumer interview.pco *js

While in driveway after starting vehicle pass airbag deployed. about 5 secs later driver side ab deployed............... *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 jeep liberty. the contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the front driver's air bag deployed. the front driver's seat belt also seized and could not be loosened. there was no crash and no warning prior to the failure. the contact merged onto the shoulder for a couple of minutes and then the vehicle was safely driven home. the dealer was notified and stated that there were no recalls addressing the failure. the manufacturer was also notified and stated that there were no recalls on the air bag. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 175,000.

I have received three notices regarding recall on the orc module for jeep liberty 2002 and 2003. each time notice had been received i attempted to schedule service appointment to have this issue rectified. each time was told there was a back log because of number of recalls and couldn't give me when this part could be replaced. needless to say im receiving another notice stating the seriousness of this matter but no indication when part will be available. i drive everyday and my safety is at risk as and it is now over a year with no resolve. *tr

Air bag light come on while driving then goes off then comes on again at random . sometimes 2 or 3 times a day .. nothing for about a month then back on all over again then off,,,, while driving on highway. has begun to do it more often... i am afraid the airbag will deploy for no reason while driving and cause me to be involved in an accident. *tr

Air bag light keeps coming on for no reason. online forums report it is not uncommon for 2002-2003 jeep airbags to deploy without warning. jeep does not offer free repair. i'm filing a complaint because i think this is something jeep should be responsible for. *tr

Since the spring of 2012 my air bag light has been coming on at odd times. sometimes it is during braking and sometimes it is not. i contacted the dealer and they said there was no danger and no recall. earlier this year i received a recall notice from the chrysler group. safety recall m35/nhtsa 12v-527. my first call to the dealer was in february or march and i was told they didn't have the parts and asked me to call back in april. since then i have taken may car over at least 3 times. the service manager, [xxx], insisted that i had to arrive no later than 7:30 am on a monday morning. he refused to give me any other appointment time. at the 3rd visit they finally looked at my jeep and confirmed there is an issue with the air bag. to date they have still not fixed it. every time i call i get the same answer, "we don't have the part yet. we will call you when we do." i asked if i should go to another dealer in a different city, but he stated that they don't have the parts either. i have also called the chrysler group recall assistance center listed in the recall notice only to be on hold for a very long time and then get disconnected without ever speaking to anyone. my air bag light continues to come on at odd times. i am concerned that it will deploy when i am not expecting it. can you help me get my car fixed? the dealership in question is dodge city of mckinney texas located at 700 s. central expressway, mckinney, tx 75070. the service manager is [xxx]. he is the only one i have spoken with as the others in the office refer me to him and say he is the only one who can assist me with a recall. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Air bags warning light came on while the car was moving. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 jeep liberty sport. while driving 35 mph, the contact was involved in a head-on crash where the air bags failed to deploy. the vehicle was destroyed. the driver sustained neck and back injuries. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 105,000.

In my driveway, i started the ignition, then paused to finish texting. with the engine running, still in park, the passenger airbag suddenly deployed. i had enough time to cover my face with my arms before the driver side airbag deployed. i have a minor burn on my forearm, and my ears are still ringing, but was otherwise unharmed. this incident could have been much worse since i was on my way to pick up my small children. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 jeep liberty. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v046000 (air bags); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was notified. the vin was invalid. the contact had not experienced a failure. parts distribution disconnect. updated 04/19/16*lj updated 07/25/16.*jb updated 11/1/2017*js

My girlfriend just exited off of jtb in jacksonville beach, fl onto marsh landing parkway and came to a normal stop in traffic (not abrupt or sudden in any way). as sitting, chime went off as if the gas was low. looked at dash and saw that gas was not empty and that air bag light was on. at that moment, the passenger air bag deployed and immediately after, the driver air bag deployed. she was able to pull into an office complex and stop, very destraught and upset over what had happened. a couple people saw what had happened and stopped. there was also a cop that saw what was going on and pulled over. she suffered minor physical injuries, but her car is sitting at my home undrivable. (this happened about a quarter of a mile from home, so i drove it home). i have filed an investigation with jeep and am awaiting their call. she did not hit anything-anyone and nothing-no one hit her. she has had a jeep dealership do any work on it anytime it needs it. all recalls have been followed. she was the only person in the car at the time. tt

Airbag deployed for no reason when driving on freeways having speed of 65 mph, very dangerous , can not see road in front of, because inflated airbag and kind of dust and smoke from airbag, traffic was heavy, but personal alertness made it at curbside, was lucky to avoid dangerous accident. *kb

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 jeep liberty. the contact stated that the air bag warning lamp illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic however, the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 115,000 and the current mileage was 117,000. updated 1/7/12 *cn the consumer was informed a recall was pending. however, the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the vehicle was repaired at the consumer's expense. updated 01/09/13. *jb

When i was driving to my house in puente nuevo county, san sebastian, puerto rico, the front driver airbag explode without collision. i made a police report num. [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Air bag warning light came on, and stayed on. *tr

Had a car fail to stop at a cross road stop sign and i hit her (tbone) style lots of front end damage to my liberty. my air bags didn't deploy. i hit the stealing wheel and broke my sternum. *tt

My husband was taking his son back to his mothers house running about 55mph when a large buck came out in front of them. the hood and grill was smashed in with the radiator against the motor. it was still drivable but wasn't able to hold water to keep from overheating. there was no airbags deployed upon impact. the insurance says it must be a large accident for the airbags to deploy. the jeep is not totaled because the agent said he was trying not to total it out since we were so close to having it paid off. i don't understand why the airbags wouldn't deploy on such a hard impact. you can see the skid marks for about 20 feet. there is deer hair stuck into the hood of the jeep. i have been in a couple accidents before and they weren't as serious as this but the airbags did deploy. there needs to be something done for the airbags to deploy upon impact. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 jeep liberty. while driving approximately 30 mph, the driver and passenger side frontal air bags deployed inadvertently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics where the technicians stated the manufacturer would have to authorize the repairs for them to inspect and diagnose the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 117,188. updated 1/20/11 *cn consumer sent in updated address. updated 02/01/12

Owner(1) driving around town stopped to get mail at post office. owner(2) got out to get mail and the airbags deployed while parked (thank goodness)! *kb

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 jeep liberty. the contact was accelerating from a complete stop at 5 mph when the air bag warning light illuminated. suddenly, the air bags deployed erroneously and burned the contact on the arms and body. the vehicle was able to be driven to the contacts home. the manufacturer was notified and a claim was filed. the contact was advised that a representative would respond to her call at a later date. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 151,112.

This vehicle now has 67000 miles on it. the air bag light intermittently came on at 63000 when hitting small pot holes in the road, then it finally came on and stayed on. i took this vehicle to the dealer and they told me that both modules failed that are in the driver and passager seat, and it would cost me $557.31 to have it fixed. i called chysler about this for some help with the cost to have it repaired, but they said no, i should maybe call you and file a complaint, so i am asking you to intervene with chysler on my behalf. according to the internet at bailey car.com/recalls, nhtsa said there have been injuries from the unexpected front bag deployments. i was lucky that i had my airbag light problem checked before the airbags unexpectedly deployed. because there are several consumers like me out there that are unknowingly subject to serious injuries, i feel that you should request that jeep recall all the 2002 and 2003 liberty jeeps for this malfunction. *tt

Around february 2011, my airbag light started illuminating randomly for no apparent reason. it would come on, i would hear the chime, and then it would turn back off. eventually it began staying lit longer and longer until finally it stays on all at times. i can't recall if any certain speeds made any difference but it seemed like if i was to hit a bumpy part in the road or similar then i would either see the light come on or if it was already on, it would go off. now it never turns off. i haven't been to the dealer because i know the run around ill be given just as everyone else i've read about. i have researched how airbag systems operate and have slowly began my own process of determining what is the cause. only problem, every thing i read states that i should not play around with the airbag system and offers no info related to testing procedures. i work on cars and electronics often, so if i just had the correct information to feel safe, then i would surely try finding the problem myself. with this said, i shouldn't have to do this and i shouldn't have to wonder all the time, when is my airbag going to explode in my face. i'll remove the entire airbag system from the vehicle myself if chrysler doesn't react quickly. i replaced 2 window regulators. both in the back doors. such a common occurrence that they have created a repair kit so you don't have to purchase the window motor again. still the point is, you see these problems, stand up and do the right thing. we (consumers) are the reason you are able to make vehicles. also i don't know if this helps but i have replaced 2 batteries since 2008. i was starting to believe the drop in battery voltage may trigger the airbag light but that wasn't it. what is draining these batteries? alternator is charging around 14.5 volts. i can disc. battery, reconnect and radio stations are still saved. how? *tr

Tl* the contact's spouse owned a 2003 jeep liberty. while driving at an unknown speed, the air bag may have inadvertently deployed and caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. the vehicle crossed over three interstate lanes before flipping over. the driver was ejected from the vehicle and was fatally injured. the vehicle was destroyed. the failure mileage was unknown. updated 08-28-14 *bf updated 09-25-14 *dsy updated 11/19/2014 *js

Was driving and all of sudden vehicle went out of control ,rolling over numerous times and ending up in the opposite lane. vehicle was hit by another vehicle and air bags never deployed. car was completely demolished . *tr

Airbag warning light illuminating for no apparent reason. dealership cannot find the problem. *tr

Yesterday early evening, i was driving about 60mph on a highway in garland, texas, when all of a sudden my airbag deployed without cause. there was no impact to the car at the time of deployment, sudden stop or anything that would impact the deployment. it deployed, i lost control of my vehicle and went to the shoulder of the highway. no events that would lead to the deployment, not even the light that indicates "air bag. " it is now lit because it deployed, i'm assuming. this is the first time it has happened. the deployment of the airbag caused burns on my arm and a swollen wrist. i will take the vehicle into the dealership soon. nothing has been done yet. *tr

Air bag light comes on and stays on. seems to only happen during the summer months. *tr

Traveling speed limit at 55 mph.slide on black ice. car went head on in hill in the median of the road and rolled twice. glass shattered-all windows. vehicle totaled. front, hood both caved in.. car started smoking on impact. had to rent car to travel home from oh to tn. had to purchase new vehicle. injuries to 2 children-minor cuts. myself..very stiff and sore esp. in neck, wrist and back areas. airbags never deployed!!!!*tr

On 9/5/09 at approximately, 12noon central time, while at a stoplight, both drivers and passengers airbag deployed with no accident occurring. i was driving my 2003 jeep liberty that i purchased new. i suffered a bruises to my forearm, which was on the steering wheel at the time of the incident. i have recently seen a doctor to determine the extent of my injury. my car is currently at feeny jeep chrysler in elgin, il. i have contacted chrysler and am waiting for their response. a member from chrysler was to go to the dealer on 9/10/09 to investigate why the airbags deployed. i was fortunate that i was not moving when this happened or more severe consequences may have occurred to me or other motorists. i am reporting this so that a thorough investigation can be conducted to make sure this does not happen to any other motorists. i suspect a manufacturing defect that led to the deployment of the airbags. *tr
