We have classified the 600 complaints from 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Engine turned off while exiting freeway decelerating and making a slight right turn. the only way to restart is to press on brake return shifter to park and restart engine by pushing start button. scary and dangerous situation. also affected steering and brakes.
Our jeep grand cherokee caught fire while sitting in the carport under our home unattended and unpowered on august 25 2018. the 2011 jeep grand cherokee was serviced by the spitzer chrysler jeep dealer in homestead florida on august 22 2018 for recall r71/nhtsa 15v-879 plus two other items. the vehicle was picked up late on friday august 24 and driven home where the vehicle remained parked until it caught fire the next morning around 1135. i had just walked past the car at around 1130 and everything was fine. by 1155 we noticed smoke coming from under our home and i rushed down to find a blazing inferno. i called 911 and immediately started fighting the fire to prevent my home from catching fire and burning down. fire inspections were completed by the state fire marshall, usaa insurance fire inspector, fca chrysler fire inspector, and zurich insurance fire inspector. the recall and fire was caused by a faulty manufacturing and assembly process. fca chrysler choose to deny any responsibility in building a defective vehicle and developing a recall which once applied made our vehicle more likely to catch fire. our grand cherokee is not the only vehicle to catch fire after the recall was applied. a quick search on the internet will find others that have burned post recall. my insurance carrier relayed to me that one agent had advised a friend not the have the recall done as some cars were burning post recall. while fca chrysler is trying to place blame on the dealer who applied the recall the facts and other inspections do not support that conclusion. fca chrysler has denied any responsibility and considers the case closed as they do not want to be faced with another 600,000 to 700,000 vehicle recall jeep grand cherokee or dodge durango vehicles covered under this recall. *dt*jb *dt*jb
Jeep was parked in driveway. went to start up and jeep intermittently starts & then cuts off or will not start at all. now being serviced at dealership. luckily, i was not driving on the highway at the time of the occurrence. however, had to have the vehicle towed to dealership. the symptoms appear to be the same as your fuel pump relay recall back in 2014 for 2011 jeep/grand cherokee. however, i have been the sole owner of this vehicle and never received a recall notification. is this still covered under the recall?
For the last several months my jeep will not start all the time. it has shut down twice in the middle of the road while i was in 45 and 60 miles a hour traffic.i was able to turn my wheel to get into the far right lane. it is very unsafe and jeep doesn't seen to care to correct the problem.
Approximately one time per month for the past 6 years my grand cherokee stalls one second after i push the start button from park. i need to push the button again to "turn it off" even though it wasn't actually on before i can try to restart it again with my foot on the brake.
While driving the vehicle shuts off completely. try restarting may take several attempts. there is no response from the engine ie: not turning over, starter not engaging. once it starts it drives fine until the next occurrence. this also happens quite often when first trying to start the car as well.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 35 mph, the vehicle lost all power and stalled. in addition, the forward collision warning indicator illuminated. the contact stated that the failure occurred on numerous occasions. the dealer (oxmoor chrysler dodge jeep ram, 4520 shelbyville rd, louisville, ky 40207) was contacted and informed the contact that the failure was previously repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 14v530000 (electrical system). the vehicle was not repaired for the recent failures. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 103,000. the vin was not available.
When i start my jeep it turns over then immediately stalls out . this happens every single time i start my jeep. that is several times a day . i believe it is the tipm. has been going on for months i called up the jeep dealership and they said there was no recall on it.
The jeep is having trouble starting, the starter is running for several seconds but it wonts start until the second or third try. on several occasions the vehicle stall while running.
The vehicle consistently shuts off while i'm driving, losing power steering and engine power. it seems to occur when i am slowing down. this happens usually once/twice each week and most recently almost caused a high speed accident, as my car shut off while i was making a left turn on a highway, which caused a semi truck to swerve, nearly hitting me and my 4 year old son.
My vehicle have been shutting off on me numerous times while i'm driving mostly when i come off the highways few times when i first start it in the morning and recently it shut down and completely died and wouldn't start back up. the battery compartment was full of water and the fuel pump doesn't cut off. i had the alternator and battery replaced thinking that's why it died but it's still not running. i've only had this vehicle for a month.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 35 mph, smoke was seen under the hood of the vehicle. in addition, the check battery sensor illuminated and the vehicle suddenly stalled in the driveway. the contact was able to remove the battery cable. the vehicle was then towed to the local dealer (cross chrysler, 1501 gardiner ln, louisville ky) where it was diagnosed that the alternator failed and damaged the pcm. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v435000 (electrical system). the contact indicated that the vehicle experienced the same failure listed in the recall. the failure mileage was 136,517. *tt
June 16, 2018 i'd stop at a gas station to fill up i was inside the station for about 20 minutes playing lottery for the next morning, i only explaining for time line. came out to pump gas and noticed my engine was smoking and i haven't been driving long, i just left a water front park which is about 5 minutes away. well the smoke smells like burning wires but no fire just heavy smoke so i let it cool down. and the truck was dead nothing no power when the tow truck finally showed up some 10 hours later, and tried to jump start the truck it was draining the jump box. so i end up taking my jeep to a after market repair shop and his diagnosis was that my alternator had burned up. so once i'd replaced the alternator the truck still wouldn't take a charge. after doing further research come to find out there was a recall on my alternator issue but for some reason my vehicle vett my vehicle was not on the list my vin number is not part of the recall list mind you i bought my vehicle use i'm the second owner is a canadian vehicle but i brought it in the in michigan from a auto broker. i'm currently dealing with northland chrysler jeep dealership in oak park michigan and at their contacting fiat chrysler recall team and trying to figure out if i'm having the same issues as the alternator recall i believe it's t36 why my vehicle couldn't be added to the list for my reimbursement i had call the number that i have on a jeep app that's on my smartphone there was a recall number and it stated that 2011 chargers challengers durangos jeep grand cherokee and a couple other vehicles if i'm not mistaken has the alternator failure recall it also states that you will smell heavy you will see heavy smoke, my name is [xxx] my number is [xxx] [xxx] is my email. please feel free to contact me at any time after reading this message. thank you [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Vehicle completely stopped on the road without warning indication. road conditions were dry at 98 degree temperature while on a straight away major highway. no previous battery warning light / charging failure was indicated before the event. the vehicle was just able to get pulled to the side of the road. the vehicle was successfully towed to the nearest jeep authorized dealer 20 miles away. diagnosed complete alternator failure which drained the battery. the alternator and battery was replaced with new dealership chrysler brand (mopar). when leaving the dealership just 1/2 mile down the road, the battery charging warning light came on. the vehicle made it back to the dealership on battery power. the vehicle was once again diagnosed with a faulty alternator (the new replacement). i was told that they could only replace the alternator with chrysler indicated brand. it is known that jeep grand cherokee 2012-2014 has a recall on the alternators which are same used on 2011. this jeep has now had two replacements with less than 88 k miles on the vehicle. recommend adding 2011 jeep models to recall list as this is a common problem.
Starter engages, but will not start wipers work without being turned on . battery depleted for no reason. engine quits for no apparent reason. this all happened while vehicle was stationary, but just as easily been while moving.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 15 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled in the middle of an intersection. the contact indicated that the failure occurred on a previous occasion. the vehicle was taken to napleton's river oaks chrysler dodge jeep ram (17225 torrence ave, lansing il) where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump and fuel pump relay were faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified and no assistance was offered. the contact was informed that the vehicle had been previously repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 14v530000 (electrical system). the contact indicated that the vehicle experienced the same failure listed in the recall. the failure mileage was 122,435.
When the right turn signal is on the fog lights flash and the turn signal does not blink. when i turn the fog light button on my turn signal lights up but does not blink. took it to the dealer and they said it was the tipm that was faulty. now after i got it back both front turn signals do not work and the back flashes fast and sometimes flashes normally. also back when i bought the car a year ago in june 2017 the car would start and i would let the engine warm up but about 20 seconds in, it would stall. when driving it would usually stall when i was breaking at stop lights and stop signs. i replaced the camshaft positioning sensor about 3 times so far and still feel the engine losing power at times.
There was an alternator recall and my dealer is not changing it and they version is the recall is not part of it.
I'm actually sitting in a parking lot waiting for the tow truck. the jeeps alternator began whining & the battery light came on.i pulled over and turned off the jeep. it wouldn't restart. has zero power. the battery was replaced in february & the alternator checked out fine. the window evidentally let itself down about a week ago. this was srrange. wipers started by themself when i tried to jumpstart it. i've read various complaints that mirror my symptoms. it will be towed to frensley jeep-chrysler tonight. please include my vehicle in the recall. i'm sure it's going to be expensive. thanks for your cinsuderstuon.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the battery warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced the battery, the alternator assembly, and the pcm. the alternator assembly was extremely warm internally, which affected the pcm. the vehicle had to be turned off during the repair to further diagnose the pcm internal voltage shortage. the dealer (fred beans chrysler dodge jeep ram, 858 n easton rd, doylestown, pa 18902, (215) 348-7500) was aware that there were two recalls for nhtsa campaign numbers: 15v879000 (electrical system, interior lighting) and 17v572000 (service brakes, service brakes, hydraulic). a repair appointment was scheduled for may 10, 2018. the manufacturer was notified of the failures and informed the contact that the vehicle year was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v435000 (electrical system). the approximate failure mileage was 83,000. parts distribution disconnect for nhtsa campaign numbers: 15v879000 (electrical system, interior lighting) and 17v572000 (service brakes, service brakes, hydraulic).
Having electrical problems, door locks, air conditioner
2011 jeep grand cherokee stalls when i slow down entering a highway ramp of making a turn. happened three times after a recall was done to fix that issue at around 46000 miles and now just recently it happened 2x again at 96000. all recalls have been completed but there is an recall for the alternator on t36 that covers the 2012,2013 and 2014 stall and the issue was the alternator. i believe the 2011 should fall into that.
Smoke was coming from the sunroof. the vehicle caught fire.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 65 mph, the steering lost power and the vehicle shut down without warning. the contact activated the hazard lights, shifted into park, and restarted the vehicle. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure was not diagnosed. the failure mileage was approximately 106,618. *tt the consumer stated the failure occurred on daily basis, usually while slowing to a stop. *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 30-75 mph, the vehicle shut off without warning. additionally, the brake pedal was applied, but failed to respond. the vehicle was taken to a local dealer (autonation chrysler dodge jeep ram and fiat, 2201 victory dr, columbus, ga 31901), but the failure could not be duplicated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer attached a history recorder to the vehicle. while driving at unknown speeds, the vehicle stalled and the traction control and service four wheel drive indicators illuminated. the contact was able to restart the vehicle. the manufacturer was not notified. also, while driving at unknown speeds on march 25, 2018, the windshield wipers spontaneously activated, the radio changed stations, the brake pedal was applied and failed to respond, and the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was towed to landmark chrysler dodge jeep ram of morrow (50 mount zion blvd, morrow, ga 30260), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified and opened case number: 33696515. no further assistance was provided. the failure mileage was 66,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the windshield wipers failed to operate. also, only the front driver's side door would lock and unlock. the vehicle was taken to the local dealer (nielsen dodge, 175 state rt. 10, east hanover, nj) where it was diagnosed that the tipm was faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failures. the failure mileage was unknown.
Since september 2017, my 2011 jeep grand cherokee has been in the repair shop four times due to the vehicle not starting. the alternator and battery was checked once per month up until december, but each time i was informed that both parts were in good condition based on the diagnostics. however, after each repair visit the vehicle would not start after a few days. between repair visits a number of other issues occured: *automatically accelerating at high speed (jan '18) *engine stalling while driving (jan '18) *blowing cool air on one side and hot air on the other (sept '17) *doors locking and unlocking when unattended (sept '17) *windows going down half way when unattended (oct '17) *radio powering on when turned to the off position (nov '17) the most recent incident happened two weeks ago when the car stalled and stopped in the middle of a busy stretch of road with three vehicles in close proximity. due to ongoing issues, this week i had the car towed to jeep for another assessment. the jeep adviser called me back the next day stating my battery and alternator needed to be replaced for $1282 otherwise the car wouldn't start without a constant charge. the battery was just replaced a year ago in june 2017. with all of the issues mentioned it's clear that the 2011 jeep grand cherokee has a design issue/flaw that poses a major safety concern for consumers. the issues that need to be investigated or re-investigated for the 2011 jeep grand cherokee are the alternator and power module replacement. most, if not all of the issues mentioned could be directly linked to the tipm. my request is that cas, nhtsa, and chrysler consider or reconsider the above mentioned for both safety concerns and the undue repair expenses paid by consumers that appear to be directly linked to faulty design.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 55 mph, the vehicle stalled and the battery indicator illuminated. the vehicle was towed to sea view auto jeep (810 state route 35, ocean, nj 07712) where it was diagnosed that the alternator and switch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the issue and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in a recall. the failure mileage was approximately 62,636. *tt *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 jeep grand cherokee. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v879000 (electrical system, interior lighting). the parts to do the repair were unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the dealer (crown chrysler jeep dodge ram dublin, 6350 perimeter loop rd, dublin, oh 43017 (888) 739-0282) was contacted several times and finally informed the contact that the parts were not available because they could not match the custom interior vehicle color. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue and referred the contact back to the dealer as they could not confirm when the parts would become available. the contact had not experienced a failure. parts distribution disconnect.
The push start button has issues starting the engine. there has been a recall for this and the issue still persists. the only way the dealer will fix the issue is if the problem is seen 1st hand and occurs for longer then 8 seconds. i have paid for multiple rental cars and spent multiple hours at the dealer to have this issue fixed and it keeps recurring. something needs to be done to fix it without re-occurrence. my final point is that yesterday when dealing with this issue my car started after its second try, i then drove onto the street and the engine shut off and the brakes locked up. luckily there was not any cross traffic because it could have caused a serious accident on a busy street with my daughter and myself in the car. this hse risk has caused me to be very concerned about the drivability of my vehicle and something needs to be done asap!
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 jeep grand cherokee. while driving unknown speeds, the rpms and all the electrical components went haywire. the contact drove the vehicle home. the dealer (neuwirth motors, 219 s college rd, wilmington, nc 28403) diagnosed that the tipm was never repaired on the vehicle. the manufacturer informed the contact that the manufacturer warranty expired and suggested that the contact use the extended warranty. the contact took the vehicle to a different dealer (victory chrysler dodge, 45 naber drive, shallotte, nc 28470) where it was diagnosed that the tipm was faulty and would cost $1,200 to repair. the vehicle was still at the dealer being repaired. the failure mileage was 132,050. parts distribution disconnect.
While decelerating and turning the vehicle will stall and you lose power steering and power brakes. this has occurred 11 times in the past couple years and 3 times in the past month. this has occurred several times while exiting the highway and has caused me to almost crash or have someone drive into the rear of my vehicle. the event leaves no engine codes and the dealer says they can't duplicate. i put the vehicle in neutral and it will start again. this is a huge safety issue for both myself and other motoring public.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 40 mph, the air suspension and power train control module warning indicators illuminated. in addition, the windshield wipers operated independently and the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was not able to restart and was towed to an independent mechanic. the mechanic diagnosed that the alternator failed and damaged the power control module. also, the battery needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 77,000.
Vehicle engine shuts off randomly while driving. this problem has happened multiple times. the engine is not running so there is no power steering or power brakes putting my wife, child, and others around them in danger when this happens. there are numerous and numerous amounts of complaints about this issue all over the web. chrysler has a recall fix for this issue but their fix is not working, as we have had this "fix" done twice, still having the stalling while driving issue. there are 188,000 other vehicles affected by this. these vehicles are a danger to everyone on the road.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was taken to buchanan and young incorporated (713 e main st in burnsville, nc) where it was diagnosed, but the results were undetermined. the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 14v530000 (electrical system), but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 121,000.
I was driving through a winding, two lane mountain road when my buddy and i both smelled something burning. we thought it may be something outside, so i continued driving. after a few minutes we both agreed to i should pull over. during this time, different warning lights on the dash flickered on and off repeatedly. before i was able to pull over, smoke began to seep through the hood. luckily, there was a parking lot to a trail head i was able to pull off. i parked and turned the jeep off. it would not crank again. after the first attempt, all power was lost. attempted to jump multiple times. towed for diagnostics. independent mechanic shop determined alternator had shorted internally and battery was no longer able to hold a charge. both were replaced for $1,600. there is an open recall for 2012-2014 models, t36/nhtsa 17v-435. why are the 2011's excluded? this recall includes engine sales code erb; my 2011 sales code is also erb, but my vin isn't included in the recall. i took this mountain road to avoid traffic from an accident on the major highway that is my normal way home.
When my 2011 jeep gc is being started, stationary it cranks, (turns over) but does not start or starts momentarily then the engine stops. it does this intermittently until it starts normally, the idle also seems rough. most issues that i am having match the issues with the tipm recall but my vehicle is not listed for the recall.
Quadra lift air ride suspension. warning lights and flashing malfunction lights are activated. passenger side window controls do not work. heated seats only stay on for one second.
- all lights in instrument cluster illuminated, air suspension disabled, vehicled locked out in 4x4 low, wipers activated, no exterior lights including brake lights working. - vehicle would not detect key, unsafe to operate, this occurred on 2 occasio
Vehicle will unexpectedly stall during decelleration and braking. vehicle loses all power to the motor and power steering, making it difficult to avoid collision and steer vehicle to safety. this happens at high and low speeds, and has occurred on 3 separate occasions in a 2 week time period. this issue was supposed to be addressed by recall number p54; of which i completed on this vehicle in 2014. this issue persists, and i am seeing other owners complain of this identical problem on various forums. jeep/chrysler seems to be inconsistent on the coverage of repairs and diagnosis. this is a real safety concern that should be addressed universally.
Fcw light on dash went on and all power went off, causing a total loss of steering and control on the freeway. this could easily result in a fatal collision. *bf updated 9/13/18*jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the battery indicator illuminated, the radio shut off, and the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact had to coast the vehicle to the side of the road. the vehicle was unable to restart and was towed to the contact's residence. the vehicle was not diagnosed by an independent mechanic or dealer. the contact was uncertain if the vehicle was included in a manufacturer recall for the alternator assembly. the manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was excluded from a recall campaign. the approximate failure mileage was 113,000.
Bad alternator at 94k miles. vehicle had trouble starting, found an open recall on the fuel pump relay, but issues persisted and electrical components began to fail intermittently and battery light came on with a whine in the engine. discovered a 2014 recall on 3.6l,v6 engines but in checking vin min does not fall into this category??
My vehicle, periodically, would struggle to start, and got worse over time. however, on nov. 8th it never started, even after repeated attempts. after investigation i discovered that the totally integrated power module (tipm) had a built in fuel pump relay that many other owners complained had failed. so like them i tested the tipm and did discover that the relay had failed, luckily in the open position. i called my local dealership and asked about the 14v-530 recall to add an external relay to fix this issue but i did not find the relay, even though they confirmed it had been completed. this was, luckily, for me only an inconvenient issue, but had it failed while driving the stalled engine could have resulted in damage to my vehicle and/or others and the persons within.
Jeep having trouble starting. push start seems to be failing, causing the vehicle to not properly start
My 2011 jeep grand cherokee overland v8 hemi stalls while slowing down to turn onto another road, or going from highway speeds to exiting a ramp. it's been occurring for several years. i've already had the fuel pump relay recall fixed twice, and my jeep still stalls out almost on a daily basis. it turns out chrysler issued a recall (t36) for 2012-2014 jeeps with alternator issues; however the information i have read on the recall sounds a lot like what is happening to my jeep. 2011 jeep gc overland should be included in this recall.
Jeep will crank but not start over, have replaced the fuel pump relay and the fuel pump and the batteries in both fobs vehicle will not start. on the rare occasion i get the jeep to run it will randomly shut off....last time i was on the freeway going 65mph when the engine shut off and i was almost rear ended because of the jeep slowing down substantially my 6 year old daughter was in the car and i was terrified.
Hello nhtsa team, i am writing to you to ask that additional vin numbers be included in an existing recall. the existing recall is p60 / nhtsa 14v-634 for alternator failure. our family has two 2011 grand jeep cherokees and the alternators have failed in both of these vehicles prematurely. can you please include vin [xxx] into the recall. the alternator in both of our 2011 grand jeep cherokees, the 160 amp unit will suddenly begin making a very loud whining sound that can be heard loudly from within the cabin of the vehicle and within the engine bay. when the failure on the alternator occurs it is very sudden, one day it is working properly the very next day it is not working properly. we have invested a lot of time in discussion already with the fca department at chrysler. fca at chrysler is indicating to us that our vehicles have all of the matching "specifications" to meet the criteria within the existing recall but our vin numbers are not included, therefore they cannot cover the repair. the fca continually tells us that they are not sure why our vehicles are not included as all of the specifications on their end appear to be identical to the specifications outlined in the recall for the failed alternator. the issue when it occurs is very rapid, we drive the vehicle one day, no issue, and then the very next day when we start the vehicle immediately there is the tell-tail loud whining sound stemming from the alternator and the noise increases in decibels as the rpm increase. please include vin [xxx] in the existing recall. thank you very much. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
