We have classified the 47 complaints from 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL into the following categories.
The engine light seems to stay on and the tire light keeps blinking off and on i bought this vehicle 10 25 2019
I just recently purchased this 2006 jeep grand cherokee 5.7 hemi with approx. 118,000 miles. driving about 10mph in a parking lot, i stepped on the brake for a stop sign. when i went to go i got across the intersection then the vehicle engine revved up and i lost all propulsion power. i had roll to a stop, turn the vehicle off and then start up again to get things working correctly while in drive. it has happened again 2 other times at various speeds. very dangerous when you lose your propulsion.
Warning lights on dash service 4 wheel drive. skid control. check engine light. esp. bas. shift indicator intermittent radio plop. speed control control inop
Takata recall when i click the cruise control it speeds up uncontrollably and i have to hit the brakes several times to disconnect it. it does not set a control at all and continues to climb in speed.
After the dealer repaired recall p41/nhtsa 14v-438: loss engine power, power brake assist seat belt and air condition failure. the problem always in motion. *js
While driving and speeding up to switch lanes, the accelerator pedal was floored alone and the car took off speeding. i attempted to tap on the accelerator pedal but that did not work so i then pumped the brakes a few times before it slowed down. i was driving about 25 mph before attempting to switch lanes and when the pedal got stuck the speed went up to 60 mph.
Speed control acceleration. driving on interstate returning from vacation, cruise was set at 70mph. when approaching a slower vehicle, cruise was deactivated and reactivated when pass was completed. when reactivated the cruise control would not stop accelerating. this has happened 3 years ago and ever since i test the cruise control the problem of out of control acceleration persists. the out of control acceleration can be stopped by stepping on the brakes or manually turning off the cruise control. i had a mechanic look at it and they cannot determine what the cause is. i cannot even disable the cruise control without effecting other electronics. i am afraid to allow anyone else to drive this vehicle in the event they would unknowing use the cruise control and get into a serious accident.
Speed control accelerates out of control when set. happens consistently when cruise is turned on and set button is pressed. the engine will rev to 6000 rpm +. must depress brake or turn off cruise switch in order to stop the acceleration. started happening while traveling on an interstate highway and speed control was set to posted speed. vehicle suddenly accelerated on open stretch of highway and could only be slowed down by turning off the speed control. this could have a disaster if it happened in heavier traffic.
My car accelerates after releasing the brake and sometimes it switches into neutral and i'm unable to accelerate. this happens when im driving straight or making a turn. my car also shuts completely off while im in the middle of driving. the lights flash on the dashboard and then they all come back on

Prior to the incident, my jeep felt as if it were having trouble switching between gears. it felt jerky, if you will. while traveling along i-95 on the east coast of florida, my jeep (twice) slipped gear and appeared to have gone into neutral. if you know the area, it's not the ideal place for this to happen. since returning to the west coast of florida, it has happened once. i've taken to a shop for a tune-up and to check on that problem. needless to say, the 'fix' did not fix it and i'm still experiencing jerky shifts and gear failure. i've read a number of similar complaints regarding the same type of incidents on the nhtsa website, but have not located a fix for the problem. without hesitation, i'll say i'm terrified. *tr
The check engine light would come on and the car would jerk at high speeds on the freeway, it even powered down completely on the freeway after reaching a high of 65pmh. the car would make strange grinding noises and lose power steering also. the vehicle was brought to the jeep dealership and diagnosed finally after 2 visits as a faulty shifter module/control module or the cars "computer".

I was driving east on the pennsylvania turnpike from pittsburgh, pa to york, pa with my wife and 1 year old daughter on the friday of memorial day weekend. i was driving between 70-75 mph in the left hand lane when i noticed i had lost acceleration, power steering, and all of my interior lights had turned off. the entire vehicle had shut off. this easily could have caused a horrific accident as there was a ton of traffic behind me and on the road. fortunately, i was going down a hill and i was able to maintain speed for enough time to safely drift my car into the right lane and eventually over to the side of the road. once pulled over, i had difficulty shifting my vehicle into park and turning off the ignition. after a few minutes of attempting to shut it off, i was able to get the key out of the ignition. i waited about 5 or so minutes and was able to start the vehicle without a problem. i stayed in the right hand lane the rest of the trip and eventually made it to my destination safely. when i got home, i took the vehicle to three rivers chrysler jeep and dodge in pittsburgh, pa. .i was told i needed to replace the ignition switch and the "wire control module". with all of the recalls in the news regarding chrysler and gm ignition switches, i would not be surprised if this was a defect in jeep as well. the experience i had was very frightening and i hope others do not have the same problems. *tr
While turning right into a parking lot at low speed, my knee brushed the key chain/key and ignition turned off while still in drive. has happened once more in the last month in a similar circumstance, both luckily at low speed in empty parking lots. had to shift to park and restart engine to regain power/control. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. while driving at 50 mph, the vehicle lost power and jerked. in addition, all the lights on the instrument panel illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system); however, the part needed to repair the vehicle was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 100,000. ma 10/19/15 the consumer stated the airbag light illuminated for weeks at a time then went off. the cruise control would not engage. updated 3/21/2016*js updated 10/17/2017*cn
Random incidents while driving the dashboard will light up with all indicators and gauges go to zero value. i recorded on my cell phone one incident. i had one case that jeep stalled at same time of incident, and i was able to coast to side of road, shut engine off and restart. i discussed this with local dealer and they could not obtain any error code. i called chrysler on one incident and they said they had no known problems reported on my vehicle. dealer said to return next time it happens but i am always not in a convenient place and the dashboard will return to normal status after some time while driving. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the accelerator failed to respond to acceleration attempts as all the warning lights illuminated intermittently. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 93,667.
For a few months now & without warning: the dashboard lights, tachometers, heater, and headlights flicker on/off, then go completely off. then if applying the brakes, there is a ferocious grinding noise and loss of steering. engine seems to slow down or not want to shift to next gear while driving. all this happens when there is flickering. seems to happen at random but getting worse. check engine light stays on for a day then disappears. i have video recording of these incidents. vehicle has been checked but "nothing reports" so i am told it cannot be repaired. *tr
I bought the jeep in feb. 2013 and shortly thereafter, while driving on the interstate, the car just shut itself off and everything went dead. this has happened about 2 dozen times since, sometimes going fast and sometimes going slow or pulling into an intersection. there doesn't seem to be a factor that causes it to happen and the mechanic cannot find anything wrong but it is very dangerous. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the technician stated that the vehicle was operating as designed. however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to an independent mechanic, who confirmed that the alternator needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted. in addition, the contact stated that the engine revved without depressing the accelerator pedal and the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an inspection station. the technician diagnosed the vehicle, but failed to specify the repairs that were made. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system); however, the part for the recall repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 107,000.
While driving my 2006 grand cherokee the vehicle will switch into neutral on it's own. this has occurred while stopped at lights, while driving at 70 mph, so on and so forth. the check engine light reads "shift control module" and this has been replaced twice and has not been cheap. when this occurs, the dash board lights light up around all gears (park, reverse, neutral, and drive.) i have had to pull off onto the side of the road and turn off my vehicle and restart it before it would switch back into the correct gear. i am wondering if the new safety recall 13v175000 is covering this issue. as i read, it seems my vehicle is not the only one with this problem. my next step was to replace the entire transmission as the person working on the vehicle did not know what else to suggest. this is very dangerous, especially with having to share this vehicle with a teenage son.
While driving on a highway, i noticed my car slowed down and even after applying the gas pedal, it didn't help. after pressing the brakes and pushing the gas pedal again, then it started accelerating. the engine light would blink and lately it stays on. the check engine light stays on and off but once i noticed that when i started the car again, the check engine light was off but i lost one front headlight. i was told by the dealership that i needed to replace a spark plug which cost me almost 300.00. now the check engine light is on again and i suspect as other owners have shared it in the forum that it's the ignition switch that's faulty. i just wish nhtsa would do something about this asap. the letter came the mail stating there is a recall on my car but nothing is being done to correct the problem. are you waiting for severe accidents to happen before you really force jeep to correct this issue??? do people have to lose their lives before you act on this problem? *tr
While driving my vehicle suddenly shifted gears and coasted as if it were in neutral while rpms shot up to 3,000. it then suddenly lunged forward and picked up speed. the check engine light came on. after a day or so, the light would go off. within the time frame of approx 3 weeks, this had occurred at least 3 times. it was very scary to have it change gears and not be able to maintain speed and suddenly speed up again while traveling with vehicles in front of me and behind me. you essentially have no control of the vehicle in that moment, nor do you have any warning that it is about to happen. drivers around you also have no warning that your car will suddenly slow down or lunge forward. took it to the dealership to be looked at. was told that it was my electronic shifter module and had it replaced. although i have a power train warranty, it was not covered and had to pay over $900. did research online and came across numerous others with the same issue. i feel that if this critical part fails on so many vehicles it should be made a recall. when this part fails, it has the potential to cause many accidents. *tr
I was driving along and decided to turn on the cruise control. when i did the jeep accelerated out of control and i was going 75. the gas pedal went down to the floor. it would not turn off using the off button on the steering wheel. i slammed on the brakes and the cruise control turned off. at that time the gas pedal popped back up. over the next week, i attempted to use my cruise control several times, and each time the vehicle speed excelled on its own to dangerous speeds, and the pedal went down to the floor. i have asked a couple of mechanics to look at it and they don't know what is wrong, but the same thing happened to them. they said that this could cause an accident and i had them disconnect the cruise control. i would like it fixed, but no seems to know the problem. *tr
On multiple occasions, the instrument panel has stopped working completely. the lighting in both in the interior of the vehicle as well as the exterior flashes and sometimes goes out completely. multiple dealers have not been able to find a problem. it has caused near crashes before with the distraction of driving at night. the cruise control also accelerates without any warning while this occurs and the cruise must be reset by turning the car off and back on. this too has caused some near crashes as the car accelerates due to the faulty cruise control. *tt
While traveling at highway speeds (55mph), engaged cruise control and the vehicle accelerated up to 85 mph. had to hit brake to disengage cruise control. tried to use it again and the vehicle again went to 85. after 4 or 5 attempts, the cruise control stopped working completely and still does not work to date. *tr
My vehicle started originally slowing down like it slipped out of gear. i was told i needed a new transmission but when i replaced it i still had the same exact problem with the vehicle staying in limp mode and check engine light on, rpm running high and not going into overdrive. the transmission is not shifting correctly after spending over $1500.00 on it. from my research i have arrived at the esm to be causing the problem with the vehicle not indicating what gear for the transmission to shift into. i have called the jeep corporate office and even though they know that the transmission needed a repair when i first bought it with 17,000 miles on it they still did not feel they were responsible for my transmission problems. to me that are just avoiding the fact that this is a manufacture issue with either poor design, construction or quality of parts. i had a 1994 amigo that i put 280,000 miles on and i never once had any type of transmission issue. this is a 2006 vehicle this is the poorest experience i have ever had with a vehicle. *tr
Vehicle since 2011 hesitates at acceleration. transmission does not engage so the engine rpms are up to 3.5 before it automatic lay shifts to the next gear. this happens a daily now and getting worse. gears seems to automatically into neutral then hangs there while trying to excel. i have called chrysler last year and recently to check for recalls and online. i am told that there is a recall n23 on 4 wheel drive in my make, model and year but my vehicle is a 2 wheel drive so this n23 does not apply. although it is the same problem as this recall. it is very dangerous at a traffic light or pulling out of an area and you accel but go nowhere. i narrowly escaped being rear ended several times. there is also a problem with my headlights. after i purchased my vehicle in2006 i took into my local dealership x 2 for them to make sure my headlights are properly lined up. i can not see the roads at dark, i have had to drive with my brights on for years. i also see that the nada has a recall on the reflectors in the headlamps! but chrysler does not recognize that recall in my vehicle either. i would like for the transmission recall to be recognized because it is not just for a 4wd , but 2wd also. *tr
Was going down interstate 40 coming from little rock ark. jeep started to slow down pressed on gas would not speed up. there are so many eighteen wheelers on that interstate. i managed to pull over. started to shifted from park to drive and drive kicked in. i had two children in the jeep with me .i can not even think about what might have happen if one of those trucks had hit me in the rear. this is a 2006 jeep grand cherokee laredo. i have looked on line for recall there was a recall on the 2008 models . the transmission control module . i have been told that is the problem with my jeep.when i made in home this happened again coming down my street in halls tn. got to my drive stop pulling. put in park back to drive made in driveway. i have seen on line this is a problem with lots of jeeps not only mine. please fix this problem before someone get hurt or dies. what does it take!!!!!!! help! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning. the failure would only occur when the vehicle was at standstill. the throttle and engine control module was repaired two months prior to the most recent failure. the contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer for further inspection or repairs. the failure mileage was 54,099 and the current mileage was 55,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. while the contact shifted into reverse, the vehicle unexpectedly accelerated without warning. the brake was applied with force and the vehicle came to a stop. the failure recurred four times. in addition, the instrument panel failed to illuminate sporadically. the malfunction recurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis. the technician was unable to duplicate the failures. the manufacturer was not made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000. updated 12/12/11*lj updated 01/03/12
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the vehicle would stall sporadically and without warning. the dealer diagnosed that the throttle body needed to be replaced and they also updated the software, but the failure recurred. the failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 75,000.
I have a 2006 jeep grand cherokee laredo. i was stopped at a stop light, with my foot firmly on the brake. i am sure of this detail because if the brake is not firmly pressed, my car shakes as though it will turn off. so as i am sitting at the light, my car accelerated and moved about 6 inches. luckily i was not too close to the car in front of me, but any closer and i would have rear ended the car. i called my local jeep/dodge dealer to ask of there were any recalls or any thing i should know regarding my vehicle and this situation. the employee, completely rude, asked me if i was talking to someone in my car and moved my foot of the pedal. he basically told me i was distracted, and since it was" 3 p.m. on a friday afternoon", i should wait and see if it happens again, then i could bring it in if i wanted to. i have 4 small children and there are millions of innocent children on the road everyday. you would think that this would be a more serious warning...especially given the situation with toyota. *tr
My daughter was home this weekend and said her cruise control was messed up. we took a ride and when she 'set' the cruise the accelerator went to the floor and stayed there till we increased speed by at least 15 mph. i thought maybe she was doing something wrong in setting the system. not the case. the cruise is no longer usable and down right dangerous. it sounds like the making of another toyota acceleration problem. i would hope that enough people bring the problem to the forefront so something gets done to repair this problem. *tr
I was driving my 2006 jeep grand cherokee and set cruise control. as soon as i did the accelerator hit the floor and i couldn't get it to stop unless i hit the cancel button. now the cruise control doesn't work. its shorting out all my other controllers and killing my battery. *tr
While cruising down the highway with cruise control on, the vehicle suddenly accelerated. had to hit the brake to disengage. numerous times since then, when cruise is switched to "on", acceleration happens and i need to hit the brake. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 65 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed to the floorboard abnormally. the vehicle was pulled over momentarily before the accelerator pedal began functioning as normal. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on numerous occasions where the vehicle was repaired yet the failure continued to recur intermittently. the contact also stated that the failure only recurred during warm weather. the failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 83,000.
When cruise control is set, the truck begins to accelerate rapidly, hitting over 4,000 rpm's. decelerate and cancel does not work, i have to use the brake pedal to disengage the cruise control. when this happened once in the past, i thought it was something i did or a fluke. then it happened a second time and beginning 6/6/10, i discovered it now does it every time and i am no longer using the cruise control. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. while attempting to shift into drive gear, the vehicle suddenly accelerated, causing the contact to crash into a tree. the contact injured his back and a police report was filed. the vehicle had not been inspected or diagnosed at the time of the complaint. the current and failure mileages were approximately 20,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact was driving approximately 50 mph. the vehicle accelerated without warning. the brake pedal was engaged; the vehicle proceeded to a complete stop. the vehicle was able to continue functioning normally. the failure mileage was 50,000. the current mileage was 59,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 60 mph with the cruise control set the vehicle accelerated from 60 to 80 mph. he stated that the rmps increased from 2,000 to 4,000. he engaged the brakes and the cruise control disconnected. the failure occurred twice. the contact stated that he took the vehicle to the dealer for the first failure and they replaced the computer modular twice. he stated that the computer modular was changed twice two years ago and the failure happened again on february 13, 2011. the vehicle had not been taken to the dealer for the last failure. the contact stated that the failure could be duplicated when the cruise control was set and it caused the failure to occur. the failure mileage was 62,000 and the current mileage was 102,858. updated 03/24/11*lj updated 1/4/11 *cn
Stopped for gas. started engine and there was great and unexpected acceleration. had to maneuver to reach the exit area---kept my foot on the brake and went forward with the engine straining, put it in reverse, same thing. couldn't 'de-accelerate'. moved forward a bit and shut the engine off. if i was not quickly in control of that vehicle there would have been fatalities wrote chrysler and received a response that there were no recalls on this model. took it to the local dealer service department. he put it 'on the computer' and by the end of the day found the problem. he discovered a service bulletin dated may 13, 2006 which applied to grand cherokees equipped with the 5.7l engine. it described the problem and the solution. this warranted a recall. why couldn't the owners (lessees in this case) be notified to bring their vehicle in to correct a defective part of the vehicle computer (p2112). what a simple solution for a dangerous defect! *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. while decelerating to 30 mph in the rain, the contact approached a stop and the vehicle suddenly surged forward full throttle. he depressed the brake pedal with maximum pressure, but the vehicle would not stop. the contact merged into an intersection, barely missed another vehicle, and swerved into a driveway. he placed the vehicle into neutral and successfully applied the brakes. the dealer stated that they had never heard of this failure, but currently are keeping the vehicle for a diagnosis. after online research, the contact discovered numerous consumer complaints on unintended acceleration of his model vehicle. the current mileage was 20,325 and failure mileage was 19,382. updated 5/30/08 *cn updated 05/30/08
Tl*- the driver of a 2006 jeep cherokee stated that the accelerator pedal extended to the floor when shifted into drive, which caused him to crash into a vending machine. a pedestrian sustained a sprained ankle, cuts and bruises. as of october 3, 2007, the dealer had not inspected the vehicle. the current and failure mileages, vin, and purchase date of the vehicle were unknown.
I was exiting a freeway off ramp and had my foot lightly on the accelerator to keep the momentum up the inclined off ramp when i took my foot off the accelerator and steppe d on the brakes to begin slowing down the car kept accelerating at the same rate of speed, about 30 mph. i was pushing down on the brakes as hard as i could, and i could feel the antilock brakes pumping, and the car was only slowing slightly. i then had to veer over from the right lane to the left lane and then run the car into the curb in order to slow it down and avoid other cars parked at the top of the off ramp. after running the vehicle into the curb the car stopped accelerating and came to a stop several feet later. as a result of the incident, i was left staring over the side of a roughly 100 foot tall off ramp only a few feet from the edge. the rim of the wheel was gouged by the concrete curb, and the side wall of the tire had a deep scuff on it. i took it to an authorized dealer, where they checked the car, which was still on its original warranty. they found no problems with the car, and said that because they could not duplicate the problem they w fix it. they did mention that one of the mechanics had the same problem with his wife's car, the same model as mine, and her car was totaled. *ak in summary, i they manufacturer did nothing to remedy this serious safety issue, and i really have no other recourse but to hope that this serious issue happens again, so that they can possibly replicate it and fix it!
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 5 mph the vehicle accelerated uncontrollably and without warning accelerated 30-40 mph. the contact was unable to control the vehicle for a quarter of a mile. the contact attempted to apply the brakes and was unable to stop the vehicle. the vehicle was driven into the snow located on the shoulder, which allowed the contact to stop the vehicle. the road conditions were wet. the vehicle smelled as if it was on fire. the vehicle was towed to the dealer and is currently being diagnosed. an electronic diagnostic test on feb 22, 2007 indicated due to the performance liilluminating the vehicle needed a new ignition switch. the vehicle's current and failure mileage was 18,300. *ak
An employee of mine at my full service carwash got into a jeep grand cherokee and after she started it and put it in gear the vehicle took off and collided with another customer vehicle. *jb
2005 grand cherokee laredo. 8 pm. turning right into my driveway, foot on brake, sudden unintended acceleration occurred, car raced down steep driveway, roaring, i turned it uphill into trees, and it was stopped by trees. still revving loudly until key turned off. air bags did not deploy. front end pretty smashed up. *nm
