A lot of people on jeep forums have been reporting their jeeps showing a "transmission overheat" message in display and vehicle not turning over. is there a way nhtsa can look into this and see if jeep needs to issue a recall? this has now caught up to me, and i am having never ending issues with my jeep, and all that jeep says is sorry you're out of warranty....; i am the original owner since 2006, have about 130k miles, been through 3 catalytic converters, 2 exhausts and most recently a transmission rebuild, that was done 4 months ago, now i am having this issue... please please please please please look into this! *tr
Took the vehicle in for a noise that turned out to be a bearing problem. while in they indicated that an internal transfer case seal was leaking. i am being told that type of failure is very common with this type of vehicle. if unnoticed could cause a failure. *tr
I will be going at any speed and my jeep will just die or spit and sputter like its not getting gas then the rpm gauge drops to zero all the dash lights come on. this happens on the highway in the middle of intersection and it happens intermittently so you never know when its going to happen. took it to mechanic and they told me the valve body solenoid was bad. if you search any of this online you will see that there are several people with the same problem this needs to be a recall before someone ends up dead!! *tr
All the lights on my instrument panel started flashing and i lost the ability to see my speedometer, the fan was not blowing and this continued until the lights started flashing. the check 4wd system came on and has stayed on. the check 4wd system light came on not long after i bought it and i took it back to the dealership and i was told that it is because there are aluminum parts that get stuck and you can ignore it. that it was working fine. i rarely use my 4wd system and the check engine light would go off normally after i turned the car off. this started happening more frequently and now the lights flashing on my instrument panel is happening all of the time. the check 4wd system light has stayed on for the last few months. *tr
I began to get a whining noise from the transmission. i brought the car in for service and recommendation were to service the transmission and the noise went away. just recently the whining noise returned and now when shifting from first gear into second it is a hard shift not fluid and smooth. the service station who i have been going to for over 30 years is a very reputable and a life long friend. he found no codes from the on board computer and his recommendations were to have the car checked by and jeep dealer for more complete diagnoses as they have equipment that might help with the problem but his diagnosis was probable bad transmission. from the start this car always had a shift problem from first to second. many times there was a delay in from park to drive and had brought the car in for service while under warranty but was told there were no codes nor anything wrong with the transmission. i have been told by my mechanic the jeeps are known for bad transmission but never got any service calls. *tr
After doing the safety recall n23 for the jeep grand cherokee 2005-2010, a month later the 4x4 low don't engaged anymore, and "service 4wd system" warning light on, when you pull the 4x4 low switch. i've been reading a lot on the web and it seems to happen to all the people after doing the recall service. i'm from caracas venezuela. *tr

I filed complaint (10561016) when the first jeep dealer i went to would not honor the safety recall n23. the second jeep dealer i went to said they would honor the safety recall n23. after going to the jeep dealer they checked their records and advised me the recall was already completed on my jeep grand cherokee. i was advised that my jeep grand cherokee needs a transfer case actuator and i will be charged for this part and labor. in addition they advised this part is on back order. my jeep grand cherokee's 4wd lo was working prior to this safety recall n23. i feel that chrysler/jeep should be held accountable for replacing this part. i intend to write my state attorney general. *tr
On 01/20/2014, i brought my jeep grand cherokee 2006 to my mechanic due to a service 4wd system light on dashboard. my mechanic advised me that the computer revealed code safety recall n23/nhtsa 13 v-175. safety recall n23 may unintentionally cause the transfer case to shift to neutral position without input from the driver. this condition could allow the vehicle to roll away inadvertently while the vehicle is parked and cause a crash without warning. my mechanic advised me to go to my jeep dealership due to the safety recall. on 01/21/2014, i contacted via telephone the jeep dealership where i purchased my vehicle. i advised the jeep employee of the situation with my jeep grand cherokee 2006. the jeep employee advised that i would be charged for repair. i advised the jeep employee that the code n23 was a safety recall. the jeep employee responded by making an accusation that my mechanic's computer was probably outdated. in addition the jeep employee advised that the code n23 was not a safety recall. continuing on the same date, i contacted another jeep dealership. i explained the situation with my jeep grand cherokee 2006. i was advised by the jeep employee that the code n23 is a safety recall and the jeep dealership would honor the recall. i conducted further research to discover that on 08/17/2013 i brought my jeep grand cherokee 2006 to the first jeep dealership mentioned for safety recall n23. *tr
After my grand cherokee had the "n23" recall performed on it by the previous owner, the "service 4wd" indicator comes on and disables my transfer case shifting. i clear the codes and it works again for a short period of time then the codes return (c1406, c1405, c140f) disabling the shifting again. this appears to be a common issue with grand cherokees according to the information i have found on jeepforum. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled on several occasions. in addition, the transmission gears slipped. additionally, the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign id number: 14v438000 (electrical system) and stated that the part was not available. the dealer did not give a specific date for when the part would become available. the manufacturer was also contacted and could not provide an estimated date for when the contact's vehicle would receive the recall repair. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
This is a common problem that is found all over the jeep forums and internet, these jeeps are known for the rear differentials failing and having to be replaced before the differentials fall apart and could cause a major accident, the differential will begin to fail by making a loud whine gear noise from the differential. this vehicle has never been off road and there is no reason for the entire differential to be destroyed like this, this is horrible quality and should be replaced by chrysler. this is not a user error, but a part manufacturing error or design error. this being so common it should be a recall. a woman and child in the car driven daily to school should not fail like this jeopardizing both lives. *tr
Hello, i had n23 recall done on my jeep ,after getting alot of snow in dec i decided to shift into x4 low and it said service 4x4 system. i know that my 4x4 low worked before having this update. *tr
in december my local jeep dealership installed safety recall n23 code. five days later i towed my jeep behind my motorhome to florida in neutral/tow mode. when i arrived i could not get my jeep out of neutral mode...message "repair 4 wheel drive system". i went to a local transmission shop and they replaced the transfer case motor at the cost of $600.00. when we got ready to leave florida in april i could not get the jeep to go into neutral/tow mode...same message. i went back to the transmission shop... this time they tested the motor and reset the codes...i was able to go into tow mode. now in may as we were hooking up to go camping i could not go into tow mode..same message again. there are many jeep owners having this same problem after installing n23. i believe that the reason this transfer case motor and actuator is on back order is because of all the replacements after installing n23. i think that jeep has to resolve this code problem...and i also believe that a repayment from jeep is in order. *tr
Car has on 2 separate occasions jumped from drive into neutral. contacted chrysler as they have a recall on jeep grand cherokees for this issue. however, they say that this vehicle wasn't included in recall as it was not manufactured at the same plant where the other vehicles were that mandated the recall. *tr
2006 jeep grand cherokee consumer complains that recall was performed eight times and problem still exist *cn the consumer stated shortly after the recall was performed, a message appeared on the dashboard that stated service 4-wheel drive. the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer. an inspection revealed the transfer case actuator was faulty, which was directly related to the recall. the dealer performed the recall again, which did not resolve the problem. customer service, informed the consumer to go to another dealer where they would replace the transfer case actuator. however, the dealer only reprogrammed the software update, which they did three times. three weeks later, the consumer went to another dealer, and they informed him the recall needed to be done again. recall # 13v175000. *jb customer follow-up. updated 01/28/15. *jb
My jeep has been slipping out of gear while driving frequently and all the car does is rev, as if it is in neutral. this has happened off and on over the last two years and nothing has been done about it. i have taken it to the dealership multiple times and they tell me that everything is fixed. then it happens again when i least expect it. it is very dangerous for this to be happening while i'm driving with my 2 year old daughter in the car. i called the chrysler recall number and they told me that i was not included in the recall and to just take it to the dealership, which i have already done several times and am tired of wasting my money. this is happening to my car and i don't want to wait until an accident happens. i will continue to log complaints and document each time this happens until something is done. *tr
After n23 recall was performed, my jeep will not engage in 4wheel drive lo. on startup it states, "service 4wd system". many people are reported the same problem. the car will not shift into 4wd low or into neutral for towing. chrysler error code is c140f and it is even listed in the reprogam instructions. i did not have this issue prior to the n23 recall. *tr
Tl * the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the transmission made a loud sound. the contact stated the failure began after the vehicle was repaired under a manufacturer recall for the gear box. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, however the technician was unable to diagnosed the failure. the manufacturer was notified of failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 98,000.
A recall (n23) was issued (july 2013) by chrysler corp. to resolve a problem with the transfer case not engaging 4low and / or shifting into neutral. all this happens at random. once the in-dash warning of "service 4wd system" appears, the vehicle has to be returned to the dealer for repair. after two attempts the problem has not been resolved. a third appointment is scheduled for friday january 17. various investigating (internet) suggests that most that have returned their vehicles for correction have also not been resolved. chrysler corp. has been unresponsive to various communication from many jeep owners and the jeep dealerships are not communicating to the factory regarding the many complaints. i want to sell this vehicle and with the recall liability not being resolved i'm unable to sell it. *tr
Car will pop out of gear and into neutral while driving at speeds under 60mph. car has been owned by me since it had 9000 miles and has been serviced regularly and is a low mileage car. desintegrating door panels, issues with transmission that could cause loss of control in traffic, what next. chrysler maintains that there are no recalls for these known safety hazards. crazy. updated 2/25/2015*js

Chrysler issued a n23 recall notice due to cracking circuit boards in the transfer case actuator (vehicle may inadvertently shift in to neutral). prior to the application of this recall my vehicle was capable of engaging 4lo. afterwards (immediately afterwards in the dealership parking lot) the transfer case would not shift. each attempt would result in a "service 4xd system" and would trigger a c140f trouble code. chrysler refuses to acknowledge the recall flash to be the issue. from jeep forums i have found myself to be one of hundreds if not more that encountered this issue. this recall is in essence a software work-around for a hardware issue. this recall is obviously a cheap attempt at fixing a costly issue of replacing the defective actuators with new. as a consumer i expect the manufacturer to fix potentially dangerous issues (such as what n23 attempts to do). however, it is not acceptable in doing so to damage the vehicle further or render systems inoperable. *tr
I had n23 recall done on my jeep in 8/2013. i have had my jeep to 3 dealers 9 different times. since the recall my 4wheel low/ neutral has not worked on jeep. i have had my actuator replaced and the final drive controller reprogrammed many times. the issue will fix for a day and then back to say fault code. my service 4wheel drive light comes on when i try and engage it. i have contacted jeep corporate and have been working with them but i don't feel they care. they have had me taking my car to all these different dealers and everyone says its something different and say they fixed it. i have been out of 800 or more in gas, 160 in diagnosis fees, 170 in tow bill from one dealer to another, and 600 for actuator. i have only had my jeep serviced at jeep dealers and it has always had all scheduled maintenance on time. i feel that the software that was installed on my jeep has caused all these issues. i never had any problems out of my 4wheel drive system. my first recall letter stated that my transfer case may experience a transfer case actuator encoder electrical failure that results in unintentional transfer case shifting into or through the neutral position. my jeep has been showing the same 4wheel drive code since the recall. i had to pay to replace my actuator cause they said it went bad after the recall. i feel like i have been taken advantage of i paid 51,000 for my jeep and have taken very good care of it. someone has got to do something so jeep will fix everyone's suv. there are many others in this same position as me its posted all over the internet. this has been going on for 5 months and still no solution. *tr
N23 recall was performed to keep transfer case from shifting into neutral caused by cracked circuit board. the "fix" to this was to flash the software to make it impossible for the jeep to shift into neutral and 4wd low. now every vehicle that has had this recall done is unable to tow their vehicle behind a camper because the transfer case can not shift into neutral, and 4wd low is inoperable as well. chrysler has claimed that the n23 recall has nothing to do with all of these vehicles losing 4wd low even though everyone that has had this recall done has lost neutral and 4 lo. this cheap fix has left thousands of people who spent a lot of money on these expensive vehicles without the best feature of the vehicle, 4 lo. most people buy these jeeps because of their 4wd capability. resale on a vehicle like this has gone right out the window with the loss of this feature. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f67/n23-recall-issue-no-4-low-1561787/ this site has an outstanding number of complaints about this problem and makes it impossible to deny that chrysler has neglected to take care of the issue. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact received nhtsa campaign number:13v175000 (electrical system, power train) and took the vehicle to the dealer. the dealer was expected to re-flash the final drive controller, which governs the transfer with new software. the vehicle was serviced, but the four wheel drive began to malfunction. the service four wheel driving unit warning light illuminated and the gears would not shift into four wheel drive. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer and they re-flashed the system. the failure recurred. on another occasion, the gear shifted into four wheel drive and would not shift from the gear. the dealer stated that the actuator motor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact stated that the failure had not recurred until the vehicle was taken to the dealer to be repaired under the recall. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 45,000. the vin was unavailable.

I received the safety recall notice n23/nhtsa 13v-175 in the mail and called a local dealership to try to schedule a service appointment to have this corrected. the dealership is don white's timonium chrysler jeep dodge located in cockeysville, md. i called on the phone twice to attempt to schedule this service and was disconnected both times. then, i proceeded to try and schedule an appointment online thru their live chat service and was told that i would be contacted by the service department to confirm my appointment, but i never was. i just thought someone should know the lack of professionalism i experienced and the message i received from this experience is, "we do not want to deal with your safety recall." i have since scheduled an appointment at another local dealership. *tr
I received a recall letter in june 2013 from chrysler recall n23/nhtsa 13v-175 transfer case actuator. stating software was not available just yet to fix. then in august 2013 received a second recall notice explaining that the software is now available for the recall to be resolved. all i have to do is go to a chrysler/dodge/jeep dealership and have the software reprogram the final drive controller module.on august 13/2013 i had the recall serviced at johnson dodge dealership in budd lake nj ( 481 rt 46 budd lake nj 07828). they did service my vehicle for said recall. the next day and everyday since i have a warning light on my dash stating""service 4wd system". i read the car manual and did some trouble shooting, but light still on. i tried to put vehicle into 4wd lo, as instructed by the car manual. result, is doesn't go into 4wd lo, warning message still coming on. i made an appointment (august 22/2013) for the same dealer to inspect this issue because i do believe possibly something was either done incorrectly, or wrong software. end result from second visit to dealer is , my transfer case actuator needs replacing !! ($600 plus tax) . they will replace it, but i feel the two issues are related, and i should not have to pay the bill. the dealer reinspected all above components and stated the software is not working properly with the actuator? so end result is they want to replace the actuator. my original recall letter said i may have a fault in the actuator, but the second letter stated for the new software to fix all. the dealer said thats all they can do! call chrysler and see what they say. tried to call a second dealer, ( dover dodge in randolph & rockaway nj) and still waiting for a call back. i then called a 800# for chrysler a customer hot line (800-992-1997) given to me by dealer, those too, i'm waiting on a resolution. Sequence of events: this has been my sons car since i purchased in 2008. [xxx] who was at college in greensboro, nc. [xxx] phoned me one evening, april 17, 2013 and stated that his jeep would not go out of 2nd gear and all lights came on and named the engine light?, ?bas?, traction control etc. he also stated that ?it jerks when accelerating and stopping?. he parked the car and my husband/[xxx] called cottman transmission in greensboro the morning of april 18th. we were told that nothing showed on the diagnostics and they needed to take out the transmission to assess. the cost would be $450. after taking out the transmission, we were told that it needed complete replacement. they proceeded with the transmission replacement and my son picked up the jeep on april 24th. i paid $2,185.77. as cottman stated the power train control module? was the original cause of problems with this vehicle. i never received a recall notice for any part on this jeep, possibly because the dealership i purchased it from closed several years ago. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

The check engine light would come on and go off..i was driving around 60 mph the car shifted into neutral and lost power...i was able to steer to the side of the road but i was in three lanes wide of traffic on the highway and had i not been in the lane closed to the side of the road i could have been badly injured. within the time frame of three weeks it happened 4 times...all when i was driving highway speeds except once the car shifted into neutral on its own and powered down when i was at a stop sign in town. the check engine lights comes and goes so fast by the time i can get to a repair shop and have it scanned its usually off. i was able to scan it once and it read a code for "transmission control module"...the car runs great but i don't understand why it just powers down. how many people have to get injured from this failure before someone fixes it! this is absurd! *tr
I recently had the safety recall n23 / nhtsa 13v-175 / reprogram final drive controller module; performed on my 2006 jeep grand cherokee (last eight digits are vin # [xxx]). jeep advised that the ?above vehicles may unintentionally cause the transfer case to shift into the neutral position without input from the driver.? therefore during the recall the computer was re-flashed to reset the drive control module, when the recall was performed my jeep as many others ((just check these links > http://www.autoweek.com/article/20140221/carnews/140229945 or http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f67/n23-recall-issue-no-4-low-1561787/ )) will not go into 4wd low or complete neutral, at all. there is no doubt among logical thinking people that to re-flash the drive control module will influence the drive control module and in this case in a negative manner. i have been back to the dealer (egolf motors in brevard, nc) who performed the flash and they advise they are waiting on jeep to decide how to repair the program. jeep corporation advises they are waiting on the dealer; it is just the old run around. please ask the jeep corporation to take full responsibility, to get this problem fixed and let us know who are waiting that they will in fact do it. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep cherokee. the contact stated while driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road. the vehicle did restart. this failure has occurred four times over a period of one year. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced the gear shift but the failure continued. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

On the date mentioned the vehicle described became locked in place unable to shift gears. the vehicle was towed into the dealer and the work performed . this involved the replacement of the transmission transfer case. at the time i questioned the possible reasons for the incident and received no answer. the total cost was in excess of 3000 dollars paid by me. i have since (upon conducting research) learned that the chrysler corp. has reluctantly issued a recall for this exact issue. it was issued in may of this year. the agency report specifically characterizes the electrical transfer case issue. i made repeated calls to the chrysler corp. and have been rebuffed with the explanation being "your vin is not included in this action." i find this incredulous. my vehicle, a 2006 jeep grand cherokee absolutely falls into the recall category. the invoice (#[xxx]) i received from world jeep where the repair work was completed identifies the cause and repair as transmission/transfer case 2168cpdca. the case number i was given by chrysler corp. is identified under # [xxx]. the recall campaign number under your agency 13v175000. it is carried by chrysler under campaign number n23. i cannot understand the arrogance of a corporation such as chrysler in light of such absolute evidence to the contrary of their stance. i am requesting your assistance in this matter. any documentation heretofore mentioned can be forwarded to your agency if necessary.
