Recently reported TIRES problems on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

While driving on interstate 81, our low tire pressure light came on. about 10 seconds later our rear passenger tire exploded causing our vehicle to jerk to the right and weave back and forth. we were able to pull off of the road and when inspecting the tire, black smoke was rolling from the tire and the tire was in shreds. the wall of the tire completely exploded. the tires were puchased about 1 year ago. they are hankook dynapro a7-m p245/65r17 tires. they are not on the recall list, but should be. we are now scared to drive the car for fear one of the three other hankook tires will explode. we are thankful that we were not involved in a serious accident as our grandson was in his carseat in the backseat of the passenger side. *tr

In february 2013, i bought 4 copper tires, cooper discover atr owl 235/65/r17, dot ut81 c8e 0411 for my 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo. factory direct tire, 22617 76th ave w, edmonds, wa 98026, sold the tires. around middle of june 2014, someone brought to my attention that all four tires on my jeeps have cracks on sidewalls. the tires only had 8,000 miles on them; those are 50,000 miles tires. it seems that many consumers cannot see those cracks and the dealers and the manufacture get away with that; if consumers noticed those cracks, at that point, cooper just offer them a prorated amount based on tread wear. the more tire gets worn, the less money cooper had to pay. i believe it is a very dangerous game as people lives is at the stake here. people drive kids in those cars without obvious bubble or separation because it is hard to see those cracks on the side of the tire. the way that this tire is built compare to other tires, this tire eventually will have those cracks. the belt in the middle of the tire that includes cooper name and logo is a separate rubber belt between the tread and the rubber above the ream. on many tires this side is one solid piece, but not on this particular tire. it looks it is manufacturing/ engineering defect that belt in the middle of the tire eventually will start separate itself due, for example, to weather conditions, such as very hot weather. the tire like that would not pass quality control if it were tested in accordance with new standard for tire manufacturers. thus, they fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 139, "new pneumatic radial tires for light vehicles." there is another issue with cooper tires, they are not correctly reflect mileage they claiming in the warranty for their tires. for example, my mazda 6 had arizonian tires, which were manufacturing by coopers, which suppose to last 65,000 miles but were between 3 and 4/32 after 40,000 miles.

Checking the tire pressure in a customer's vehicle resulted in two broken valve stems due to deterioration of the tpms sensor. *tr

2005 jeep cherokee. consumer states several problems with vehicle including electrical, brake system issues, battery failure, alternator failure, 3 broken stems and repetitive issues with a transmission filter *tgw the consumer stated the transmission problem would often leave him stranded. the transmission would often cause the vehicle to lurch forward or backwards when the transmission finally engaged. the vehicle has stalled at intersections while making turns which caused the consumer to lose steering ability. *jb

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee with tpms sensors installed. apparently, metal caps were installed on the valve stems that oxidated together making their removal impossible without twisting off the valve stem, flattening the tire. i can't even get a replacement tpms valve replacement from jeep (mopar) because they are on backorder (due to high demand because of problems like this). this creates an unsafe driving situation--i can't check my tire pressure because the cap is frozen on to the stem--if i try to remove it, the stem will break, and there is no supply of tpms replacement parts. these should have never been on the market installed this way-they should have had rubber/plastic caps installed. *tr

I currently drive a 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo, and i have been having trouble with the tpms tire valve stem spontaneously breaking causing rapid deflation. so far two have broken, but fortunately the car was not moving on both occasions. it appears the valves broke due to corrosion. my concern is that this may occur at a high rate of speed, causing a loss of control. *tr

Manufacturer defect. all four door handles not operable. plastic hinges and pins all fractured. faulty plastic components. safety issue. unable to exit car from inside. failures started at 98,000 miles. cost to repair exceeds $2000.00. jeep will not cover. jeep issued no recall yet component failure is a known catastrophic failure across the model. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 55 mph on normal road conditions, the air bag warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. the indicator remained lit until the engine was turned off. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician stated that the failure was related to the air bag sensor and ordered the part for the repair. the failure and current mileages were 55,000. updated 2/9/09 *cn the tire pressure light illuminated as well. updated 02/13/09. *jb

I have had to replace 3 of 4 my valve stems because the threading around were you put the cap on twisted off while i was putting air in my tire. while removing the cap the stem had snapped right at the thread. the first time this happened was 180 miles away from my residence. another time i was three states away. having this happen while not near you home is very frustrating and was very frustrating. on the second time i was foolish enough to have a tire person talk me out of not getting it replaced, three days later out of state it snapped on me. what a freaking headache. i still the broken piece in my car after the guy fixed it for me. what a mess. *tr

Passenger seat belt light and red air bag light on dash comes on intermittently then stays on . air pressure light comes on and tires are at normal psi. some days both lights come on together. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the vehicle has cooper discoverer atr tires, size 255/65r17. while routinely inspecting the tires, the contact noticed that the exterior sidewall tires had belt separation. in addition, the tread had excessive wear. she took the tires to a tire dealer and they diagnosed it as just cosmetic failure. the manufacturer stated that those particular tires (dot ending in 1506 and 3506) were excluded from nhtsa campaign id number 06t016000 (tires:tread/belt). the contact would be responsible for the repair costs. she has pictures of the failed component. the vin was unknown. the tire failure mileage was 5,000. the vehicle failure and current mileages were 95,000.

Tire pressure sensing valve stems. 3 of the 4 valve stems have cracked and broken around the thread area of the cap resulting in tire pressure loss. *tr

My wife had a flat tire this date and when the tire shop she took it to, pulled the tire from the wheel and noticed bubbles on the walls on the inside of the tire. they told her the tire was defective, but she probably caused the defect by draining it 15 minutes with slightly low tire pressure. tire pressures are monitored closely and checked at least monthly with very little variations ever detected. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while changing the gear from drive to reverse there was a clicking noise. this occurred intermittently. while attempting to apply pressure to the accelerator pedal the engine made a roaring noise and the vehicle failed to pick up speed. the dealership rebuilt the transmission, however no other repairs have been made. the manufacturer has been alerted. updated 6/27/2006 - the vehicle battery would not hold a charge. the headliner had to be replaced because it was unraveling.. the sunroof motor had to be replaced. the transmission was rebuilt on 2-27-06 with on 90000 miles. the memory seat did not move back at times when the key was removed from the ignition. the tire pressure monitoring system was inoperative. the power steering pump was binding and had to be replaced. the air bag light illuminated on the dash. the rear windshield wipers were not flush with the windshield. *nm

Red air bag light on dash comes on intermittently then stays on. air pressure light comes on and tires are at normal psi. some days both lights come on together. i have taken jeep in four times for same problem in 17 months and its doing it again within 3 months of last service. *jb

The goodyear wrangler hp's on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee are wearing terribly! there are only 6400 miles on the suv and the tires are feathering something awful! the vehicle was in for service and tire rotation july 31, 2006. i also asked the dealer to inspect the tread wear on the tires. the dealer stated that it was normal. i have since had the vehicle examined by a service/parts representative at a different local dealership. he stated that in no way was the tire wear normal. he added that the wear on my tires resembles that of a vehicle with nearly 20,000 miles on it. this is unacceptable in my eyes. *nm
