We have classified the 6 complaints from 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee about EQUIPMENT into the following categories.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that within 2-3 days, the air conditioning unit failed completely. the contact consulted a local mechanic and a local dealer, whom both advised that a red dye would have to be added to the vehicle in order to determine if there was a leak somewhere within the unit. the entire process would take approximately two weeks. the dye was added to the vehicle however, the contact stated that the fumes were offensively strong and toxic, entering through the vents at all times whether the air conditioner was activated or not. the dealer advised the contact that the entire dashboard would have to be removed in order to replace the evaporator coil. the repair would take approximately eight hours for $1,800 at the owners expense. the contact stated that the instructions regarding adding freon to the vehicle advised of a possible explosion, which the contact believed was extremely dangerous. the vehicle was taken to the dealer but the vehicle was not repaired. the contact stated that freon was leaking onto his driveway, which the contact was concerned because it was a toxic and unsafe chemical. the failure mileage was 104,000. the current mileage is 114,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 45 mph with the air conditioner activated, the contact noticed warm air emitted through the vents with an unusual odor. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated the air conditioner evaporator was leaking. the vehicle had not been repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 71,000. updated 02/17/12 *bf the consumer stated in order to fix the problem, it would require the entire dashboard and steering column to be removed. the failure has occurred twice. also, the evaporator was replaced. updated 03/21/12

1. my 2005 jeep grand cherokee unexpectedly can stall, typically when the vehicle is moving at less than 15-20 mph. unfortunately, no warnings are given by the vehicle as the engine simply stalls and dies. no computer error codes are displayed or registered. the stalling occurs both in forward and reverse. often the stalling occurs when the engine seems to either down shift or up shift in lower gears. the stalling is a safety issue as the unexpected and unpredictable stalling often occurs at stop lights/intersections or parking lots. the problem appears to me to be a coupling between the computer controller/software, the rpm sensor, and the transmission gear box. 2. the failure is intermittent and unpredictable. when the computer fails to "catch" the rpms fall rapidly and the engine stalls and dies. consequence is that the vehicle can stop suddenly in the middle of an intersection or parking lot. the failures have occurred multiple times. 3. despite several computer flashes and maintenance on the "solenoid-linear iacv," jeep has failed to resolve the problem. chrysler-jeep gives the run-around. the dealer says that they can help anymore; the regional manager doesn't recognize it as a safety issue; corporate chrysler-jeep doesn't see it as an issue. *tr
Had a rock krawler 3.5 x factor lift kit installed on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee. rock krawler acknowledged an incorrect bolt was sent out with the kit and could cause failures to the system. before i could get it in to be looked at the bolt snapped while i was driving on the road causing a multitude of events. first the actual bolt was ruined, which caused the strut fork the slam down onto the strut which bent and punctured the strut, also the front right axle got bent and shaved down because of the instant rubbing and heat caused by the friction which made it unbalanced. rock krawler sent me correct bolts and new forks, that is it! they has said they will pay for the strut, but not the axle or and labor costs that go along with fixing the problems their defective equipment caused. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1995 jeep grand cherokee laredo. the contact owns maxim rotors model# 5115. while driving her vehicle she noticed a clinging sound coming from the front end of the vehicle. after examining the vehicle she noticed that the front passenger side rotor had separated into two pieces. the rotors have not been diagnosed by a dealer. no repairs were made. the vin was not available. the failure and current mileages were unavailable.
Water pours in through the a pillars and where the garage opener is. this only happens in the winter months, when the temperature is really cold. this happened 2 or 3 times last winter (2006) and now it has happened 3 times in the last 4 days. the pattern is when the vehicle has snow on roof and it gets really cold then warms up a little the water pours in. the carpet is soaked. i can hear the ice moving around in the a pillars when this happens. the dealer can't simulate this. they put the vehicle in a room and run water over it. i think it has something to do with the water freezing inside and expanding then when it warms up it just pours inside the vehicle. the dealer checked the sunroof and said there was no problem. i think it could be the gaskets for the luggage rack could be cracked or loose, thus water getting in. i can't explain why it doesn't do it when it just rains. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the air conditioner would only function properly when on a high setting. the repair shop stated that the wire harness for the blower motor was melting and causing the failure. the dealer stated that a new blower and wire harness was needed. the current and failure mileages were 32,600.
Dt*: the contact stated after towing the vehicle and driving it 20 miles at 50 mph, there was a intense smell of burning rubber surrounding the outside of the vehicle. the smell was coming from the center front of the vehicle near the firewall. the vehicle was taken to a service dealer on 3 separate occasions for the same issue, but the dealer was unable to determine the problem. the manufacturer was also notified, who the contact stated was very rude.*ak the consumer stated the owners manual was incorrect on how to tow a vehicle. updated 01/10/07. *jb
I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee that has 2 specific problems that i have taken to the dealership numerous times with no resolution. jeep claims they do not know what the problem is and/or can not duplicate the problem to fix. no error codes etc however if someone would just read the jeep forums they will see this is a "nationwide" issue that is very dangerous with hundreds of near miss accidents. her first issue with my jeep is when coming to a stop or sitting idle with the car in drive the engine just shuts off. of the 8 to 10 times this has happen, twice the car did not want to start up again. we had to give the car about 5 mins and then it started right up. dealer found some "random" error codes that we were told had nothing to do with the issue we were having. at the third time we too the jeep to the dealer they changed a senor and replaced the transmission filter and fluid. the problem continued and on the fourth trip to dealership they updated the software per jeep in detroit. still not fixed and the dealer ship is telling me there is nothing they can do. issue continues to happen. after the dealer ship installed the new software, the second issue started. this issue is the most dangerous and will result in a lawsuit if not fixed. when driving at really any normal speed the car will act as if i the driver am hitting the brakes really hard. not hard enough to lock the wheels but hard enough to leave a seat belt redness on my neck from being slug forward. when this happens the red brake like and yellow abs light comes on. the issue happens for about 3 seconds and the car just regroups and keeps going. we have lost count of this issue buy my guess is this has happened about 15 times. on the last 3-5 times when the car locks up it turns off the radio when in the past this did not happen. issue seems to be adding more problems as time goes on. jeep needs to read the forums. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 35 mph through an intersection on normal road conditions, the engine stalled and could not be restarted. there were no warning lights prior to the incident. the vehicle was towed to the dealership, who diagnosed a fuel pump and fuel injection pump failure, both were replaced. after this incident, the vehicle presented transmission problems. the contact noticed a loss of power while driving 65 mph on a highway. intermittently, the transmission made noise when shifted to second gear. the vehicle had been taken to the dealership 20 times, however no error codes identified the defect. in one of the incidents, the yellow malfunction light illuminated and the dealership identified the defect as the computer control module and the driver shaft, both were replaced, however the transmission problem persisted. the dealership determined the vehicle could not be repaired. the manufacturer was contacted who recommended to take the vehicle to a different dealership. *ak the vehicle was not downshifting when going up hills and it would get stuck in second or third gear. the a/c and blower motor were inoperative, the dealer could not duplicate the consumers concern. the key became stuck in the ignition. all the dashboard lights were flashing, the cd player was broke. the brakes and rotors vibrated. the starter was replaced. the driveshaft and heater were replaced. the seats would not move back. the seat belts did not retract as they should. updated 01/17/07. *jb updated
***several problems with 2005 jeep cherokee laredo 3.7*** just after purchasing this vehicle in feb 2006 dealer had to replace the air conditioner because it would only work at one speed. after that the transfer case and shifter had to be replaced, next the windshield began to leak molding the carpets, next the steering wheel began making loud clicking noise when making deep turns, vehicle also has severe hesitation when going up hills, now my mechanic says there is transmission fluid all under the vehicle. have also bumped my knee against the key resulting in stalling. worst of all only getting 12-14 mpg!!!!!!have owned jeeps in the past, very unhappy with this one. *jb
My 2005 jeep grand cherokee needed a flat changed. the jack in the car was not able to jack the car high enough to get the flat wheel dismounted easily nor could the new wheel be mounted from the trunk. the dealer sent a shop mechanic who also could not get the jack high enough. i had to call aaa. i also know of 3 more jeeps (2-2005 and 1-2006) with the same potential problem. oddly, one of them, which is owned by a lady friend, had the oddest problem. my brother-in-law was driving it one day. turns out there was a wheel shimmy going on. he stopped the vehicle on the side of the highway. when he called me he indicated 3 lug bolts were missing which we both thought strange. he subsequently coaxed the car very slowly home. the dealer charged the lady for the repair and remounting of a new tire. i suspect that she had a flat, got some help and because the new wheel was not mounted in a true fashion because the car could not be raised high enough, she just had to make do. that was dangerous for the lady. as it turns out, my wife also has one of the jeeps i mentioned, and i have instructed her to just call aaa when and if she gets a flat, so the tire can be dismounted and remounted with the new one safely. all our cars have 17" wheels. the jack needs to go up at least 2-3 inches more to all for proper mounting or else the wobble will result and hence , ultimately the bolts will break off given the stress. i mentioned it to my dealer once i had aaa repair my car and asked the dealer to repair and get the problem fixed with the manufacturer. i also think the lady i mentioned who paid for her repairs because of jeep's equipment design defect should be reimbursed for her misery. *jb
Purchased vehicle on 7-31-06. upon test drive the door locks would nt lock or unlock when using door key (any dr in the car). the remote did work. salesman told us 2 bring it in if it cont'd. taken in 5 times since the 1st time in october 05', dealerships cannot dupt the issue. last dealership said that if he toggled switch about 10 times it happened, but that was just "overheating the button & that is normal". problem is i work in a building w/a prkg garage & work all hrs. when i get into my car, 4 safety i lock the drs immed. there have been several occasions where i can't do that & have 2 wait 2 get the car moving over the 15mi an hour 2 lock the drs. next issue is the delayed engagement in the transmission going 2 rev or drv. the car has been in on 3 occasions for this item of which the dealership clears codes or cannot dupt the issue. this issue became a an issue in a construction zone at a rr track near our home. gates were down when i drove up & i was 3rd car back, the gates went up, 2 cars went through & i was almost at the tracks when the railroad arms started coming down again. i put on the brakes & shifted to reverse 2 back up & the delay nearly caused the rr arm 2 hit the car. i backed up just enough to clear the rr arm by less than 6 inches. the last item is the a/c. since late march of 06' we have been experiencing the a/c blowing cold, then the air turns 2 warm or hot air blowing from 3 sec 2 minutes of blowing humid air before the system will kick in again with cold air. this has been intermittently like the other 2 items above. 3 times into the dealerships & again it was stated they fixed it when it wasn't or "it's 114 degrees out, it is going 2 blow warm air". "using outside air will make the a/c blow warm air'. the incident date is hard since there are 3 issues so i put the day of purchase. the failures are also ...
Dt: consumer owned a 2005, jeep , grand cherokee laredo. the air condition had a part that needed to be replaced on 7-18-05. and later on 7-20-05 the blower fan and heater would only work on the highest setting. a part melted, and there were too many amps being driven to the resister. they had to the replace blower motor, relay, resister, and a wire harness. *ak
High side ac valve showing signs of oil leaking around the capped valve. upon repair it was discovered that the valve and the replaced tube are two assemblies and still leaked freon. service dealer in trying to stop the leak turned off and discharged the freon with the customer standing in front of the vehicle. *jb
Since i purchased the car in january i have had about a dozen incidents where upon fully depressing the brake the gas pedal was also pressed accelerating the car. the most frieghtening time was on the 12th. where the car shot out into traffic and i had to swerve to avoid an accident. it is more likely to happen when wearing more bulky shoes. it is obvious that the brake and gas pedal are improperly located with respect to each other. i have driven many cars over my lifetime and this is the only car that has presented this problem. i intend to bring this problem to the attention of the dealer as well as chrysler. i have researched several other similar complaints.
In reference to 05v396000: everything stated in the recall applies to my vehicle also even though i have a hemi and its associated transmission. chrysler customer service has neglected to assist me in assessing the implications of four months of shudder effect on the transmission, engine and frame of the vehicle. customer service continually hangs up on me while i am explaining the situation. after four months of dealing with the shudder i finally was able to convince the dealers service department that i had a serious problem while driving. they replaced the torque converter. i have a fully loaded 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited. *jb
Our 2005 jeep grand cherokee 5.7l limited has now on two occasions when stopped and in gear with brake on , rapidly accelerated. once in reverse, and once in forward. the first time was on jan 14th when i was behind the wheel waiting for my wife to get in after just backing out of the garage and resting my foot on the brake pedal. fortunately, just before she stepped into the open door the car accelerated rapidly backward at full throttle until i could hit the breaks hard. the car went approximately 40 feet. again yesterday as my wife stopped at the side of the road to get our mail, she realized she needed to backup and get closer to the mail box. as she pulled forward-a distance of 10 feed, she came to a gradual stop just before the mail box. the car then leaped forward at high acceleration smashing off two mailboxes mounded on a 4*4 post splitting it in half, then went approximately 15 feet before crashing through a snow bank and hitting a large wooded hedge. damage was limited to large scratch in the hood, small dents above head light, dent on front quarter panel , and small dent on right door. we have filed a police report, contacted our insurance agent, and contacted chrysler who promised to do an investigation next week. my assessment is the break pedal, and the gas pedal is 2.5 inches apart, and when you slowly apply the break it will squash to the point that it is at or below the gas pedal level. if wearing heavy shoes or boots this causes the side of the shoe to hit the gas pedal therefore the rapid acceleration of the very responsive 5.7 hemi engine. we would like very much to notify all who are driving this vehicle to be very careful...as this situation could have been fatal in both situations.*ak
