Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and the 4 doors panel handle area are 2 broken and 2 cracked, now its became to an a safety issue once is very difficult to open the doors with the broken parts, i have to scroll down the drives and back driver windows to open the doors from outside the car. occurs every time have to get out the car. i spoke to the dealership and said is out warranty, i spoke to chrysler customer service rep and told me the same is out warranty and there is nothing they can do for my. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee the hood does not stay up. fell on my hand and x-ray was required. updated ivoq 08/17/10 updated ivoq 08/19/10.*jb *tr

All door handles are broken on the inside. these have not been used improperly. the plastic behind the handle is very weak and it breaks. neither of my back doors can be opened from the inside. i am completely restricted from using the back seat of my car because if an accident were to occur, anyone in the back seat would be trapped inside the vehicle. front doors are equally broken but can be opened after a few tries. the hazard is still there for myself and anyone in the front seat. although this plastic is an independent piece, the dealer will only sell the whole indoor panel at $500.00 each door panel plus labor. i called to file a complaint with chrysler and they responded "you are on your own. the are no recalls or warranty. you have to pay it on your own". then i try to find generic or aftermarket handles and realize that literally every shop i visited has dozens of customers with my same car and my same problem, some that chrysler responded to and some that they did not. anyways, it is a serious defect on the jeep grand cherokee 2005 indoor handles that is putting people's lives at risk and chrysler is not doing anything about it but bully their customers and avoiding their responsibility. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee limited interior door handles. 3 of my 4 handles have broken off. jeep charges $700.00 to replace this. it is a joke, considering i have used the backseat door handles maybe 15 times since i have had it since 2007. i have never heard or seen door handles on any vehicle completely break off out of no where. *tr

There is a potentially serious safety issue concerning the interior door handles of the 2005 jeep grand cherokee. apparently the plastic holding these door handles has a tendency to crack and break, causing the door handles to be inoperable from the inside of the vehicle. the door handle is only supported by the molded plastic of the entire plastic door panel, and not the metal frame of the door itself. there has been no blow or abnormal use to cause this problem, just the normal opening of the doors with the inside door handle. this condition has affected all 4 of our doors, with the handle itself completely missing (falling down inside the door) on the left rear passenger door. at this point, the handle on the right rear passenger door is not missing, but it is inoperable (nothing for the handle to pull against because it is cracked on the inside), and both front doors have cracks but are operational at this point. it is obvious that chrysler-jeep needs to resolve the problem before someone dies in a fire or accident, having gotten trapped inside the vehicle. we bought this vehicle new from the dealer, but the dealer has indicated there is no recall and it will cost ~$600 each to replace the entire door panels to fix the current problem. he also indicated that even with the new door panels, the problem may happen again. this is not acceptable!!! must someone die to bring this serious problem to light. *tr

On all interior door handles, the plastic backing that is recessed or 'cupped' behind the actual silver handles you pull to open the doors has cracked. the back left door cracked to a degree where the handle separated from the opening cable, so the door can not be opened from the inside. the driver door is close. all handles show the same sign of cracking though. if there was an accident, my children in the back would have a hard time getting out. *tr

2 of 4 interior door panel on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee are broken. i have not replaced the panels due to cost and working around the problem for now. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the plastic around the front interior door handles was disconnected from the door. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where the failure could not be replicated. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure and current mileages were 99,000.

Approximately 3 years ago, the interior door handle attached to the door panel became brittle and cracked and over time the 2 rear doors do not have handles, just gaping holes, and the front door handles are cracked with large holes. the obvious defect of the construction material has created a situation where the rear passengers cannot exit in an emergency. the cracking of the door panel is not normal wear and tear, but a defect in construction. *tr

I own a 2005 grand cherokee limited, at this time both front doors handles are broken, the rear handles start to breaking apart too. i have to open the doors front the outside witch is unsafe and dangerous in case of an accident. first one broke at 67000 miles, and the second at 71000 miles . please help. *tr

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee has broken door handles. the dealer wants $750 in order to fix the part. it is a safety concern for my children in the back seat who will not be able to get out of the car if there was an accident. this just occurred in the last month. i will fix the piece on my own dime but it seems kind of outrageous for a door handle. if not for my kids i would skip it and just suffer with the broken door handle. *tr

Interior door handles broken due to cheap plastic. in case of an emergency is a safety risk. dealer won't sell door handles but instead a entire panel for over 500 dollars and i have all 4 broken. *tr

The interior door handles both front and back are cracking and breaking off in my jeep grand cherokee limited 2005. no longer is it possible to open the front passenger side door from the inside. the back passenger side door is the same. both the front and back driver side handles are cracking with pieces of plastic broken off. they are eventually going to break off as well. this is not occurring to abuse of opening the doors. i have probably had the back doors opened from the inside a total of 30 times for the three years i have owned the vehicle. do not have children that ride in the back (have none), and do not transport people places from the backseat of my car very often. i have searched on line and this is a issue for thousands of other 2005 jeep cherokee owners. it is a hazard and danger if someone is unable to get out of my jeep in a emergency. *tr

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the interior door panels (all 4 doors) have cracked/crumbled around the door handles making it impossible to open the doors from the inside. this is a very dangerous safety hazard and should be addressed immediately. i have 75,000 miles on the vehicle, therefore it is not under standard warranty. the dealership said they could replace the entire panel on each door for about $500-$700 each. *tr

Interior door handle the drivers door has broken off behind the handle and the passenger front door is cracked. i feel its a safety issue as it seems to be a common complaint in which the doors become totally inoperable, mine have not gotten that far, but i am handicapped and that would complicate my situation even more. it appears to be very cheap plastic and the cost of repairing is written at $770. plus tax. *tr

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited interior door handle broke off like many other owners. this should not happen, all my door piece around handle broke off completely. i understand many people having same problem claim manufacture defect. jeep should take action to correct this before someone get badly hurt. *tr

I am at the end of my rope with this same story. my story is exactly like the other 824 complaints posted here. my indoor handles, on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee, have broken. my children and i cannot exit my vehicle without rolling down windows. heaven knows what will happen if we are ever in an emergency situation which includes the failure of my vehicle's electronic system, because we would literally be trapped inside without the use of our windows. i have complained, and complained and complained to the chrysler company. no one will help me. my quote, to repair each door, is $750. as a single mother who works very hard to pay my vehicle payments as it is, i am now faced with the burden of having to pay another $3,000 in order to keep my family safe. enough is enough. i have never sued anyone in my life, nor have i ever considered doing so, but this is the final straw. it is time for a class action lawsuit, people! i see no reason why the chrysler company can't produce a strong, failproof repair kit in order to keep their loyal customers safe. this is absolutely ridiculous. *tr

2 of the 4 interior door handles have broken off and are unusable; the other two are cracked and appear to be breaking. *tr

All of the inside door handles are breaking off around the pull lever. it started with one of the back doors and now has spread to both back doors and the front passenger door. the plastic around the drivers door has begun to crack and will not be long before it fails as well. the door handle assembly is molded into the entire panel and the repair requires replacement of the entire door panel. getting out of this car requires some skill. you have to pull straight out on the wire (that used to be connected to the pull lever) if the wire drops into the panel you can only exit the jeep by someone opening it from the outside. this is a problem. i did a search on the net and i found countless post of the exact same failure. jeep is saying the same thing to anyone who contacts them. that it is abuse that has caused the issue and replacement is not covered under warranty and the cost is $700 per door. *tr

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited, and all of the interior door panels have cracked around the door handle release. my concern is that the poor construction or the door panels and the latch mechanism will cause occupants to be stuck inside when the door handles eventually fail. the vehicle only has 36000 miles, and is very well taken care of, and this poor quality construction is unacceptable. *tr

I have had my 2005 jeep grand cherokee for 3 years. one year ago, i got a crack in the plastic around the drivers side door handle. then 6 months ago, the front passenger door handle cracked. last month, the rear passenger door handle broke off while a friend was trying to exit. the door handles are slowly breaking off at the plastic around the door handle. *tr

All 4 interior door handle on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee have broken, two of which ar currently in-operable. chrysler has told me it is an isolated incident however every website i check has hundreds of complaints. *tr

Good afternoon. within the past 24 months, all 4 of my door handles (interior) have had hair line cracks that have developed into full breaks on the door handles causing safety concerns for myself and my children should we be in an emergency and be unable to get out of the car. i had purchased an extended warranty on my jeep (7 years or 70,000.00) miles and when i had taken it in to our authorized dealer, they informed me that it was not covered. i have received a quote to fix this and was informed that they need to replace the entire door panel as the handle itself is not a part in itself, which will cost over $2000.00 for parts and labor. my vehicle is in excellent shape except for this. *tr

I have a 2005 grand cherokee limited with an drivers door inside handle broken which will not allow safe exit from vehicle. *tr

Notice cracks on 3 door panels about 2 1/2 years then about 2 years ago all 3 panels broke in peices now its very unsafe as doors will not open from inside car 2 front doors an 1 rear door... *tr

My jeep grand cherokee 2005 has only 25,900 miles and 4 of the 4 inside handles are broken, gone due to the poor quality plastic. this is a major safety concern and chrysler don't wanna do nothing about it!!! what was gonna have to happen before chrysler starts looking into this? what if me and my family get to a car accident and can't get out of the car !!!! maybe then they will look into it!!!! *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee - interior door handles broken all of the interior door handles on my vehicle have broken. apparently the only available fix is to replace the entire door panel assembly. i have solicited quotations for each panel, and the lowest offered price has been $750/panel. based upon the fact that 4 of 4 handles have broken in the same manner, i believe it sound to conclude the handle suffers from a hidden vice or defect. luckily, i live in a state that allows recovery for breach of the warranty against redhibition. however, i can only imagine the disappointment and anger for like consumers who have no recourse to address this defect. please do the right thing and persuade the manufacture to remedy via recall. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that all four interior door handles were fractured. the occupants would have to engage the exterior door handles by to exit the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 59,000. the vin was unavailable. *tr

The passenger side window on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo will not roll up (after dropping down into the door on the highway). *tr

The casings behind the inside door latch began to gradually deteriorate until all four door casings cracked which resulted in difficulty exiting the vehicle. three of the four handles have broken off completely, rendering the doors useless. *tr

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the interior door panels and handles to open the doors are all broken. the dealership wants $600-700 per door to replace. this is a safety defect rendering the passengers unable to open up the doors. the chrysler corp should do a recall and fix this obvious and dangerous design/manufacturing issue. as a result of the broken door panels, the door handles will not properly open up the doors for both the front and rear passenger doors. if there is ever an accident and those doors are the only escape route, they will render the passengers trapped in the car. *tr

Door handles on all four door have cracked and broken with normal use ,we are afraid we will need to exit vehicle in a hurry and now we have to roll down the windows to exit vehicle this is a severe safety issue that needs to be addressed by chrysler before someone is injured. *tr

Two of the door handles on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee have broken off and are unusable. the other two are cracking and i am fearful they will be breaking off soon. the handles and the supporting door frames are all cracking in the same location and the handles then fall off. the manufacture has been unwilling to even discuss the issue. the dealer states it is $700 per door to fix. parts to fix the door handles are unavailable for sale outside the dealerships. due to the safety issue of being unable to exit the back seat area from the inside, i am unable to allow anyone to ride in the back seats at this time. if an accident were to occur, they would be unable to exit the car from the inside. there are numerous complaints posted as well as a website where hundreds of people are stating the same exact issue with their 2005 jeep. there was not any outside circumstance that caused this defect. the dealer states it is "normal wear and tear". this is an unacceptable safety hazard. i hope you will address as a recall before someone is seriously injured because they cannot get out of the vehicle. *tr

Door handle broke off on the driver door and every door handle is about to break. due to very weak and dry plastic used to make from jeep. extreme safety hazard for all of the occupants of the vehicle especially in an emergency situation. children or adults in seats not knowing how to get out of car in an emergency could be deadly. jeep should have a recall on this situation. *tr

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee that i purchased new. all of the plastic around the door handles has broken apart and now both of the rear doors cannot be opened from the inside. the front doors seem that they will be next to follow and the dealer says that the entire door panel must be replaced for an estimated cost of $485 each door. i find it very unsafe for my children to be in the back seat and not being able to bet out of the vehicle unless opened from the outside. the door handles should be addressed and i have read that there are many other reports of this happening. please help, i love my jeep. Please save the children! the front passenger side and both rear passenger interior door handle latches don't function and no one can get out of the vehicle. only the driver can exit the vehicle. my husband carpools our child and neighborhood children to school. we took our car into get it repaired at tallahassee dodge chrysler jeep today and they quoted us $650 per door or $1,950. the blue book value of the car is less than that. why is there not an nhtsb recall on these? i've seen thousands of complains online. please help! this is madness! it is an obvious defect. if you review the complaints, you will see that most of those affected have lost functionality in all four doors and the driver can't even get out of the car. we are, unfortunately, waiting for that to happen, as well. thank you, kindly, for your consideration. the vehicle was stationary, as we were trying to exit the car. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee. the interior door handles (2) have broken and caved into the door panel. the doors must be opened from the outside. if someone was somehow trapped inside the vehicle, this would create an additional safety concern. the dealership wants to charge $700.00 to fix each door. i have spoken to several jeep grand cherokee owners and this seems to be a very common problem. *tr

The inside door handles do not function due to bad plastic that holds them in place and this will not allow me or my passengers to exit the vehicle incase of a fire or accident. it started out as a small crack and now they all are breaking off. *tr

All 4 plastic interior door handle brackets/inserts in 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited (4.7l) have disintegrated, making it impossible to get out of car w/o reaching outside. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee. all 4 interior door trim panels have cracked and broken surrounding the door lever making it impossible to get out of my car. this issue has happened in numerous 2005 jeeps. recall is needed. *tr

When opening my doors the door handles started developing cracks and eventually cracked into several pieces and the handles are no longer attached to the door. calls and a visit to a dealer left me with the only option to replace the entire interior door at over $200. *tr

The plactic cup that hold the inside door handles are broken on all 4 of my doors making the 2 back doors impossible to open from the inside. it is only a matter of time before the front 2 doors will be unable to open from the inside... making this a safety hazard if there is an accident where you need to exit the vehicle

2005 jeep grand cherokee, plastic door panel and handle assembly is cracked and or broken behind where the pull handle is. jeep refuses to fix this issue without charging over 3k for parts and labor. failure on drive and passenger door @ 50k miles. handles are now just floating in door cavity. serious basic safety issue. please make them fix this via recall. *tr

2005 grand cher limited driver's door handle broke, when pulled to open door from inside. *tr

Interior door handles of the jeep grand cherokee have cracked and fallen off leaving the doors unable to open from the interior. *tr

All interior door panels are cracked around the door handles. three out of four door handles have snapped off and the very last one is hanging on by a thread. the handles seem to be attached to the actual door panel which is comprised of hard plastic. the design of the door panel and the handle being attached is bad and a safety issue if you can't exit the vehicle if your car dies and you have no power to open the windows. additionally, if you need to force the doors open from the inside due to a wreck, car on fire, panicking etc., 9x's out of ten you don't have handles and any weight or pressure to remaining handles if any while cause them to just snap off. my car smells of gas constantly and the light comes on to tell me to check the gas cap. i eventually replaced the gas cap after checking it all of the time and now the car just smells of gas and my check engine light comes on sometimes. i've had the car checked by mechanics and the jeep dealer to no resolve. the constant gas smells give me bad headaches as well as concern when i'm driving. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that all four interior door handles were fractured and as a result, three of the doors were unable to be opened from the inside of the vehicle. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 9,000 and the current mileage was 33,000.

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited. 3 of the 4 interior door handles are broken. the 2 in the back seat are not functional. you have to roll down the window to get out of the vehicle. you will find there are many complaints about the door handles in the 2005-2006 jeep grand cherokees. this a factory defect and should be replaced by the factory. there has been no abuse to these door handles, just regular use has caused all the broken handles. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the rear door handles had fractured and detached from the vehicle. the dealer inspected the door handles and advise that the failure was normal wear and tear. the contact spoke to the manufacturer and was told that the door handles were not covered under warranty. the failure mileage was unknown but the current mileage was 80,000. updated 10/27/2011 *ln *tr
