We have classified the 41 complaints from 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee about STRUCTURE into the following categories.
2005 jeep grand cherokee has all 4 interior door handles cracked and broken and are unusable. these door handles are prone to failure. a simple search shares thousands of complaints of consumers experiencing the same issues with this 05-09 model vehicle. in the event of fire, crash, water intrusion, etc. of the vehicle, inside occupants are unable to exit the vehicle safely, if at all. i am looking for support in requesting chrysler to offer a recall and correction for this safety concern.
'takata recall' my door handles have completely cracked in my front seats to the point they are very loose and have to be pulled all the way out just to open the door. my backseat handles are completely off. i was parked at home when the back right came off. at the gas station when my son pulled the handles in the back left came off.
Rear passenger side door handle no longer opens the door from the inside. door handle is loosely flopping around. the door must be opened from the outside. this was first found when the stopped and my son couldn't get the door open.
My 38k mile driver jeep door handle panel shattered and injured my hand.
Rear support beams splitting welds
Nhtsa! 'interior door opening handles breaking/failing: 1drivers door totally inoperable. ***this is a dangerous safety issue ' if handles break or are inoperable in certain emergency situations, passengers may not be able to exit the vehicle, causing serious injury or death!*** manufacturer charge to replace/repair handles is prohibitively expensive: in my case, the cost of eight (8) monthly car payments! manufacturer safety recall warranted!'
All 4 interior door handles have broken off the car after regular use. makes it impossible to leave the vehicle without someone opening it from the outside. extremely dangerous. the plastic that makes up the door handle breaks apart because it was poorly made. this would be extremely deadly if it happened to someone during a fire in the car.
Interior door opening handles breaking/failing: 1 rear door totally inoperable. ***this is a dangerous safety issue ' if handles break or are inoperable in certain emergency situations, passengers may not be able to exit the vehicle, causing serious injury or death!*** manufacturer charge to replace/repair handles is prohibitively expensive and is reporting to just re-break soon afterwords, several complaints with zero real solutions, recall warranted!'
Interior door handles .cracked plastic causes door handles to not work.normal operation of handle causes breaks in plastic .hazard only able to open door from outside ,if accident or fire can only open door from outside.
Interior door handles cracking and breaking not able to open the doors from inside they have been replaced but still break. chrysler refuses to do anything about it
All four interior door handles have cracked and crumbled apart. this is a huge safety risk for myself and my family. the cost of replacing the door panels is quite large as the jeep/chrysler company does not provide nor make door handles alone. as the car is a 2005 there is no warranty and at this point i do not locate a recall on this obviously defective part. due to the fact that jeep made this with a cheap plastic, the inability to safely get out of the vehicle is an obvious issue. jeep needs to replace these parts and not at the expense of the owners. the safety issue is obvious and due to the simple fact this is not due to abuse or mishandleing by myself or any other family member in my vehicle it needs to be addressed. the rest of my car interior is fine and not in need of repair. i have read and noticed a lot of other individuals with the very same issue and have filed a complaint. i am not requesting a replacement car but i am requesting that the integrity of the jeep brand be corrected for the safety of myself and my family. i have to get out of the car to open the car doors for my family members. if we are in a wreck or have a fire we could all be lost simply due to a cheaply made door handle that the jeep company does not choose to replace. this should be a customer satisfaction issue as well. but the safety is of utmost importance. there is also a lot of aftermarket door handles being made due to the cost jeep is charging almost 400 per door panel. however the safety of these parts are not really known. jeep is informing as i call that they do not use after market parts only jeep parts. i say that if that is the case then jeep needs to own up to its design problem and secure the safety of the people that are driving in these vehicles.
Drivers side rear interior door handle broke away from plastic door panel, so we are now unable to open the door from inside the car.
The door panels in the front row have cracked and broken to the point where the door handle is just hanging. you can not get out of the car using the door handles from the inside. you must either reach out the window our have someone open it from the outside. the same thing happened in 2015 to the rear door panels/handles. this is not normal wear or tear. the dealership agreed. this is a major safety issue as one can not get out of the car quickly if needed. door panels should just not crack, especially all four. there must be an issue with the materials that were used. there is not fix for the door handles except to replace the door panels, which is costly. please look into this safety issue. thank you.
Door handles broken driver side and rear passenger door handle also broken. plastic broken that hold handle in place.
Issue 1 - all the internal door handled have broken. this limits passenger egress in the even of an accident. issue 2 - this past weekend all the lights on the car flickered and briefly turned off while driving at night on the highway. this includes the headlights, parking lights, fog lights, and all interior lights. it appears there is a known problem with the light switch mechanism in the multi function turn signal assembly. this present a very dangerous situation if traveling on a two lane rural road. *tr
The interior door handles broke on all 4 doors .three out of 4 doors no longer open.i have to put down my window to open the door from the outside or i have someone open it for me from the outside.i feel this is a safety issue because i can't get out of my vehicle quickly if there is ever an emergency.
The interior door handles are breaking. my driver's side door handle has completely broken off which makes an escape in case of an emergency. this affects all interior handles. and is affecting several thousand owners of jeeps gc and the cost of the repair is prohibitive. this is a safety issue that should be addressed by the company who chose to use frail plastic that breaks easily.
Broken rear door handel's rear doors won't open from inside. my children and other passengers are trapped inside until i get out and unlock doors then open the doors from the outside for them. could be a safety hazard, if wreck or something happened to front doors and was trapped inside i could not exit except thru rear doors but.they do not open from.inside potentially making it impossible to get out. this is a safety hazard and should be fixed.
All four interior door handles have cracked and broken from regular wear. rear passenger door will now only open from the outside. i have spoken to several other jeep cherokee 2005-2006 owners who have had the same exact thing happen.
All of our interior door handles have cracked and the drivers side no longer works. each is cracking in the same way leading me to believe it is an engineering problem not just a regular use problem. we can no longer get in or out of the vehicle from the drivers positiion.
Interior door handle assembly has cracked on all 4 doors (handle has completely fallen off on right rear passenger door) and handles are now inoperable. this is a huge safety hazaard. driver and passengers are unable to open doors from the inside. if in an accident there would be no way for the occupants of this vehicle to easily exit. jeep/chrysler does not acknowledge that this is a known problem on this vehicle. the only option available is to replace the entire interior door panel which is approximately $700+ per door. this is absolutely absurd. jeep/chrysler needs to recall these vehicles and fix this issue before someone is killed because they are trapped inside a vehicle whose doors will not open from the inside.
The plastic surrounding the interior door handles on 3 of the doors has broken away. one of those doors now cannot be opened from inside the vehicle. this issue could be very dangerous if there is a wreck and/or fire that the occupant needs to exit the vehicle quickly. a quick search on the internet reveals that this is a huge problems in models 2005-2010
The interior door handles are connected by piece of cheap plastic and the plastic breaks easily; rendering the interior handles useless. it's happening on 3 of my 4 handles. it's a safety issue because it makes the indoor handles un-useable. if involved in an accident, it may make it difficult, if not impossible to exit the vehicle. there are many, many complaints. i believe it's involves most grand cherokees from years 2005-2010 and jeep is aware of the issue. however they have offered no resolution other than replacing them. this requires replacing the entire interior door panel at an expense of at least $500 per door. i as well as many others can not afford to replace them. nor should consumers have to foot the bills for an obvious, costly and dangerous design flaw.

When opening up the right rear passenger door, the door latch broke off in my daughters hand. no force able opening had been done, this was in a parked position stopped in a parking lot stall. i do not allow any passengers on this side for fear of not being able to get out in case of an emergency.
Three of my inside door handles broke off, called jeep thay only sell the door panel about $600.00 for one door panel installed i think jeep needs to recall to fix this problem thanks [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *bf *tr

The inside door handles have been breaking off over the past two years. only down to one left on the driver's side. too expensive to fix at dealership. severe safety issue.
3 of the interior door handles are cracked, the driver and passenger door handles and rear driver side passenger, this is a dangerous safety issue, if handle completely breaks in an emergency situation passengers would not be able to exit the vehicle causing serious injury or death. http://www.carcomplaints.com/jeep/grand_cherokee/2005/accessories-interior/door_handles_have_broken_from_interior_door_panels.shtml
My inside door handles are cracking and collapsing. the plastic is defective and does not last. i now open my driver door by rolling my window down and opening it from the outside. i went to moore chrysler jeep in peoria az and they took pictures but they came back and said they will not be fixing this because its out of there good will period. this is not ok, there are 1000's of people with the same exact problem! i believe they should fix this for free!
The right rear door handle has broken off making it impossible to open the door from the inside. the plastic that the handle mounts to has completely disintegrated and the right front door is starting to do the same thing. the vehicle is otherwise in excellent condition and has been impeccably maintained. after researching this issue i found that this appears to be a chronic problem. this is a serious safety concern as it is impossible to exit the vehicle from these doors.
When opening the passenger side door i noticed it was cracking. i just purchased the car used and found that all 4 door have the same issue though the back doors are far worse. this needs to be repaired asap. and jeep will not cover the cost for repair as it's not on their recall list. it can result in injury if there is an emergency and the passengers cannot open the doors
I drove into an advance auto parking and when i was driving the car seem to accelerated and i could not turn the wheel on the car i tried to push the brakes to stop the car but the braking system was not working. i could not turn the wheel and the braking system was not working and i started to panic. my car ran right into a metal pole and totaled my car. the police at the seen told me and my husband that the impact that the vehicle took, the airbags should of came out, but they did not. my car is totaled and the body of the car in the front is split in half.
The inside driver door handle assembly has cracked and broken thus rendering the door a safety hazard should the driver need to exit the vehicle quickly. i contacted jeep and the only solution is to replace the entire interior door panel at a cost of $700 plus. this seems to be a pretty common defect with this model as well as the jeep commanders.
I own a garage kept, 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited 2wd with approximately 80,000 miles. 3 of the 4 interior door handles are severely cracking making it difficult to open the door. this is a safety concern because once they full break, the door in unable to be opened from the interior. cost to repair each door is over $800. i contacted jeep customer support on 6-22-15, but was told this was not a known issue and that there was no assistance they could provide in repairing the door. this is a well documented safety issue and needs to be address so that consumers can get assistance in dealing with the safety problem.
Driver and passenger interior door handle broke off in our hand will trying to open the door, these happend 4 months apart, this is a high priorty saftey issue have to roll down the window to open the door, god forbid we get in an accident and cant roll down the windows to get out, help
All four door handle assembly system are gone 100% crumbled !! the handles are just hanging there. any passengers in back seat can't get out of vehicle and according to my research this is a problem with thousands of these vehicles... the door handle casing assembly should be recalled immediately or do you just wait for someone to perish from not being able to open these doors??
Was notified by service dept. that the crossmember of the frame that supports the transmission was cracked /broken due to excessive rust and needs to be replaced cost=$800.00 seems unusual at this time&mileage. thank you *tr
Just found this site: same story 2005 jeep grand cherokee with a 4.7 liter v8. both rear door panels ' door handle areas are cracked and broken with pieces missing and the front door panel door handles are showing signs of cracking. recall is needed for this obvious manufacturing defect. *tr
While returning to my home in nj from a trip to fl, i heard a loud thump from the rear passenger side of the car followed by a noticeable change in exhaust note. i pulled into a gas station a few miles away and inspected the vehicle. the rear portion of the exhaust was missing, from what appeared to be separation due to corrosion. the rear bumper melted at the point above where the exhaust tip extends. of course, warranty coverage for this part expired at 8 yrs/80k miles. *tr
I was pulling into my driveway and the vehicle shut off and the brakes would not stop and my car ran into my pump house. *tr
Both of the backseat passenger interior door handles are completely broken off. the driver interior door handle is broken off. this is a safety hazard because god forbid an accident occurs there's no way to open the door from the inside. the only way to open the doors is to physically roll down the window and open the door from the outside. *tr
I am wondering how there hasn't been a recall on the grand cherokee interior door handles. my car has only 67000 miles and all four door handles are cracked. the back two are being replaced because they no longer work. this poses a serious problem in the event of a crash since rear occupants would be trapped in the vehicle. performing a search online and this is definitely a widespread issue for the grand cherokee. *tr
The door handles and plastic surrounding the door handles have cracked and door handles are broken. this is a safety problem or recall. if you get trapped in your jeep and the door handle breaks then there's no way out from that door. my jeep is in great condition hardly any wear and tear. this is defective lemon material. it just crumbles. *tr
Rear interior door handle on passenger side failed with no misuse or excessive force. door handle is inoperative. must open door from exterior of vehicle. no sign of any wear or obvious damage from visual inspection. dealership quotes repair cost to be prohibitively expensive. seems to be manufacturer defect. obvious concern that this could be a safety hazard in case rapid egress from vehicle is required in an emergency situation. *tr
Driver's side door handle came apart. replaced door handle. now the two back seat door handles are coming apart. this is a safety hazard in that if there is an accident, there is no way for the passengers in the back to get out. especially a problem if there are children sitting in the back. it never should be that all door handles on a car come apart.
The interior door handles are all broken because jeep decided to go with the cheap route instead of using quality parts. the door handles crumble with very little effort and make it impossible to get out of the car from the inside. this is a very serious problem because if there were an accident or if the car were to become submerged, i would not be able to open my door from the inside and i would die. i've seen many complaints from other jeep owners online and it is ridiculous that a factory defective part like this would not be recalled when it can cause a safety concern like this. *tr
I have a jeep grand cherokee limited, 2005. the rear right door handle cracked and upon exiting of my family member, the hand simply broke off. in the past week, i have been experiencing a threatening to break of the driver's side door handle. i am the only one driving my jeep and i worry that when i have my grandchild in the vehicle and the rest break as it appears they are threatening, exiting the vehicle will be an issue. i have contacted both the dealership in my town as well as chrysler regarding this issue and i was informed that i would have to replace the door panels rather than the actual door handles. the dealerships are kicking the can down the road and this is dangerous for them as well as the customers. chrysler needs to deal with this issue before it becomes a real problem. *tr after the recall was performed, the consumer noticed the ignition cylinder physically extended out from the housing and was very difficult and awkward to engage when starting the vehicle. in addition to that, when starting the vehicle, the windshield wipers came on. the consumer stated it was not an issue prior to the recall work being done. the dealer repeatedly told the consumer the ignition switch had nothing to do with the wipers. updated 06/02/16.*jb
