We have classified the 41 complaints from 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee about STRUCTURE into the following categories.
Interior door handles crack from normal use and eventually fail. safety issue cannot open door from interior. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the driver side door handle detached as the contact attempted to enter the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised that the handle would need to be replaced and the contact would have to purchase the necessary parts needed for repairs. the manufacturer was notified of the failure who offered no further assistance. the failure mileage was 50,000.
Inside door handle plastic is broken in one door and cracked in two others. once this plastic breaks the inside door handles fall out rendering the door inoperable from the inside. in an accident there is no way to get out through the door unless you break a window and reach the outside handle. from the research i have done online it appears that this is a common issue with these vehicles. jeep does not sell this assembly separately. it is only available by purchasing an entire door panel at a cost of five hundred per rear door handle and six hundred plus per front and this does not include installation. *tr
The area right above all 4 door handles are cracked and ready to come off the door. which would leave me with no way to exit my car. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that both rear passenger and driver side door handles were fractured. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that the failure was common, but there was no coverage or recalls for the failure. the dealer also advised that the part had been redesigned by the manufacturer approximately seven times in order to correct the failure. the failure mileage was 80,000.
Interior door panels are cracking & breaking apart around handles. three of four doors already have damage, am waiting for rear passenger door to do the same. purchased 2005 jeep, used, w/ less than 21,000 miles on odometer, no visible damage at that time. rear doors are rarely used as we usually only have the driver or driver and one passenger in the vehicle. have been in contact w/ jeep/chrysler, however, they maintain that: the vehicle is out of 3 yr/36000 mile warranty; it was purchased used; therefore, they will not help to repair this, even though it is a safety issue, and obviously the door panels were defective initially. customer service @ chrysler even suggested that i go to a dealer & have them inspect this. i asked if the dealer would have a 'plastics professional' on hand to be able to say that the panels were defective, of course the answer is 'no'. dealers will only do what chrysler tells them, and so far, we're not getting anywhere w/ them. help!!! *tr
The door handles on two doors have failed and broken off. this is a safety issue as door can only be opened from the outside and so far i have been quoted $1100 to replace and repair these handles as the entire inside door component must be replaced. *tr
The driver interior door handle plastic mount broke. no abuse, no excessive wear and tear. *tr
The interior door handles on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee are all broken. two of them are inoperable. the cheap material used by the manufacturer should be recalled as it cracks very easily. once the inside handle is broken the door can not be opened from the inside. this is a safety concern in case of a fire or accident. the dealer says the whole door panel would have to be replaced and not just the handle, as they are attached together. the cost of each panel is approximately $700 each. *tr
2005 jeep grand cherokee limited - car is in good condition except for 3 of the 4 doors have handles casings that are cracked and the door handle is hanging off. the car is well maintained and garage kept. this started happening in the last year and has spread rapidly. all 3 doors have done it the same place and it has started with a crack and then grown into the pieces falling off and leaving the inner workings of the door fully exposed. this a grave safety issue and a recall needs to be issued. *kb
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the driver and rear passenger interior door handles fractured while attempting to open the doors. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer denied assistance with the repair because the failure was not recalled. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 55,489.
Door panels are broken such that door cannot be opened from inside. *tr
I have an 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited and all 4 interior door handles started with hairline cracks that have advanced into major cracks and pieces of the plastic missing where the interior door handle is located. recently, 2 days ago- the back passenger handle completely came off and now is inoperable. there is no way to exit the vehicle from the inside of that affected door. i am certain that all my door handles will eventually follow suit and i will have no operable doors in the vehicle. this is a safety issue and should be addressed as such. this is not cosmetic. all 4 interior door handle panels need to be replaced. the door handles are not secure and will continue to crumble until they are not usable anymore. since this is a known issue- when is jeep going to start replacing their broken manufactured parts? *tr
The jeep grand cherokee interior door panels are defective . the handles are all plastic and they all break off from the door panel. jeep has refused to do anything about it. they have a waiting list for new door panels and they will not produce the part to fix this safety issue. this is a very unsafe problem that could cost a life if the person reaches for the handle to get out of the car and cannot. they need to make this a recall and issue parts to replace this for free for owners of the jeeps. *tr
Panel behind the interior door handles are cracking, leaving the door handles flimsy and almost inoperable. numerous complaints have been filed. recall needs to be issued. *tr
Interior door handles cracked, loose, and about ready to break off. if an accident/fire were to occur, it would leave interior occupants trapped inside the vehicle if you pull on the handles too hard. this is definitely a case of poor construction/design. needs to be addressed. *tr
Normal door use, door handles cracking then breaking. worried about safety. unable to exit door in an emergency. would have to be let out. nothing done to repair. three out of the four are broken. jeep will not recall or repair. only way to exit vehicle is to be let out from exterior. *tr
The door panels on our 2005 jeep grand cherokee cracked around the door handles. the door handle broke and the rear door will not open, trapping the passengers in the rear seat. *tr
2005 jeep grand cherokee interior door handle trim completely shatters for no apparent reason. door handles are inoperative from inside the vehicle. every door handle has this same issue. chrysler-jeep officially denies any culpability, but will give a discount off of the $2,500 repair bill, so consumers must pay $1,000 for the manufacturing defect. even extended warranties will not cover the issue. i hope to god no one ever desperately needs to get out of one of these death traps in an emergency. *tr
My 2005 jeep grand cherokee rear drivers side latch handle broke while trying to exit the vehicle. after further inspection, 2 more latches are experiencing stress fractures in plastic molding. *tr
2005 jeed grand cherokee failure of interior door latch handles due to cracked plastic door panel which prevents operation of the door from the interior. this has occurred on 3 of 4 doors with the 4th door possibly failing in the near future. this is a severe safey issue preventing occupants from exiting the vehicle in an emergency. there are numerous reports on the internet. although, internet reports are frequently unreliable, there are hundreds of postings discussing this condition. further, at least one report indicates that chrysler has agreed to replace the door panels for a $50 co-pay; but my contact with chrysler was not successful. this is a serious issue that merits consideration for a recall. *kb
Vehicle stalls at random, and looses power steering capability, can cause a crash on windy roads. very scary. has been to dealer multiple times in arizona and has not been able to fix. they tried to fix it under warranty and under extended warranty from chrysler. also when vehicle stalls looses power, can't immediately open windows or doors. doors on this vehicle also interior handles all were broken prematurely right after warranty expired at 48000 miles. this second problem is so common that dealer doesn't have part in stock, factory back order and jeep won't fix it. this second problem is a safety issue as well because can't open door, with handle from inside in az 110 f can be deadly, or during a crash or fire
I have a grand cherokee 2005, i purchase used less then 5 months ago. the passenger door open handle frame started to brake up to a point that broke the frame. went to the dealer where i purchase the told me that i need to replace the entire door panel which cost me over 600 dollars. the vehicle has less then 60 thousand miles ... but since pass the 6 years it is not cover under the warranty. i am afraid to buy another door panel pay 600 dollars and break again. i would like to jeep to step up and help customers that like jeep cars and have problems like this ... after looking online i notice that i am not the only one. please help! *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. while parked the contact noticed the plastic that holds the door handle within the interior was deteriorating on both the front driver and passenger side doors. the contact stated the door could not be opened from inside the vehicle. the doors needed to be open from the outside in order to exit the vehicle. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing but he was informed that the entire door panel needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
All 4 interior door opening handles breaking/failing: both rear doors totally inoperable. ***this is a dangerous safety issue handles are inoperable in emergency situations, passengers will not be able to exit the vehicle, likely causing serious injury or death!*** manufacturer refuses to and replace/repair handles is prohibitively expensive! manufacturer safety recall warranted. *tr
I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and all my interior door handles are breaking,i have three small children and i am concerned they would not be able to get out of the vehicle if anything were to happen. *tr
My vehicle has 40,000 miles, immaculate condition except for the door handles and their structures around them. the drivers door is barley excitable. sometimes i have to roll the window down to get out.(how embarrassing, to be a top of the line, showroom quality; still ; vehicle). we bought it new in november 2004. have been so happy with it until 2 months ago. the passenger and rear passenger handles are cracked as well. please help me, i'm just sick about it. *tr
The driver side interior door handle began to crack, followed by the other three interior door handles. i can barely open any of the doors from the inside at this point. i fear that very soon, i won't be able to open any of the doors from the inside at all rendering my vehicle useless. this is obviously a factory defect that i could not have caused by myself. the door handles on my vehicle should not be falling apart after only six years. the poor quality of the plastic used to make the door panels is clearly the problem. i cannot afford to replace all four door panels on my own, nor do i feel that i should take full responsibility for cost. i am extremely frustrated and upset by the disappointing quality of the vehicle and the current state of the economy is not making things easier for me. *tr
All 4 of my interior door mechanisms are broken. i'm able to still open my front passenger and driver doors, but the rear driver and passenger doors have to be opened from the outside of the vehicle. i have filed 2 claims with my insurance company to attempt to get them replaced (safety hazard), but was declined. i've also contacted the chrysler corporation and was told that since my vehicle was out of warranty that they couldn't do anything about it. i would think that since there have been so many complaints on the door mechanisms being so fragile, that they would recall them and replace them. the rear doors where the first ones to break, then the front passenger and as of 4/02/13 the front driver side broke. i've always had a jeep of some kind and this has never happened to me and if the corporation doesn't step up and correct this matter, i will have no choice but to never purchase a jeep product again. *tr
Door handles falling off due to a suppliers defective plastic resin mix. in case of a fire or crash a passenger or driver might not be able to get out of the vehicle and die from this defect. this is a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited. *tr
2005 jeep grand cherokee limited (5.7l): interior plastic holding door handles has been cracked for quite some time and now they are broken. i am the sole owner of the vehicle (i'm single, no kids) and my rear door handles have rarely ever been used, yet they are completely broken now. apparently this is a very common trend among these 2005-2008 jeep models and this is a serious safety issue as rear passengers are unable to exit the vehicle from the inside. the steps to repair a simple door handle and crack requires the entire panel to be replaced, at $400+ each. these dealer replacement parts are on national back-order due to the extreme amount of cases with this. *tr
I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and my door handles are breaking off on the inside. i do not have children so they are not abused in any way. the material is a cheap plastic and the handles are barely hanging on both front driver and passenger doors. this is a safety hazard that needs to be addressed. i have also seen several other complaints on youtube from other jeep owners with same situation. i also work for aaa roadside and have seen several instances where they have to be towed for electrical fires. this makes me very nervous and this matter needs to be addressed. there are also videos on youtube with jeep fires as well to back it up. any kind of recall would be greatly appreciated as these two scenarios are a serious and life threatning combination. thanks *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the plastic door panel area that was surrounding the handle became cracked on all four doors. the vehicle was taken to a dealer but the technician was unable to diagnose a reason for the failure. no repairs were done to the vehicle. the manufacturer was not notified about the failure. the failure mileage was 55,000 and the current mileage was 97,000.
I currently own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and approximately september of last year i observed the front passenger interior door housing to be cracked and loose. i was bewildered how this happened. in april of this year my seven year old daughter was in the rear seat behind the driver seat. i stopped the vehicle and exited. i was waiting for my daughter to come out and she began to bang on the glass in a panic. i opened the door from the outside and she was crying and told me she couldn't get out that the interior handle was broken. i looked at the handle and discovered the housing to be completely broken apart like the front passenger one, but the rear handle was just dangling and is inoperable. it was at this time i began to research this issue to see if it is a problem with other jeep owners. sure enough it is a problem with hundreds of jeep owners, and my research should that there are 65 complaints filed under latches/locks/linkages; 29 complaints under structure: body: door; and 10 complaints under latches /locks/linkages:door:latch, not counting other site complaints when you conduct a google search. i went to a local jeep dealer who informed me that my warranty is up and they do not have any knowledge of any recalls. i am concerned as if two handles are broke, it is a matter of time the other two will also break. i also find this to be a serious!!!, safety issue as if there is an emergency, how will a child exit my rear seat if they are sitting behind the driver and if the handle breaks on the otherside there is no getting out from within the vehicle. this of course can result in the death of a passenger. i hope your agency can assist me with this problem in getting these handles replaced before the unthinkable happens. thank you in advance. *tr
3 out of 4 door handles have developed cracks on the plastic door panel in my 2005 jeep grand cherokee. one of the doors is no longer operational without rolling down the window and pulling the outside door handle. this is clearly a design defect from faulty plastic attachments. if there was an accident the passenger may not be able to quickly exit the vehicle, especially if the electric windows no longer functioned. chrysler needs to fix this. *tr
2006, 2007, 2008, hyundai sonatas. sunvisor fails to remain in position or plastic arm cover breaks causing the sunvisor to not stay in the upward position. this is a safety issue. while on a trip the sunvisor failed to remain upright impairing road vision. there have been three tsb bulletins regarding the sonata sunvisors. the problem persists and the internet is loaded with customer complaints regarding recent failures of the sunvisor to remain in position. *tr
I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and the inside door panels are a hard plastic one piece door panel. the plastic that is behind the door handles is broken and cracked and i am very much concerned about the safety of being able to exit the vehicle in an emergency or even during normal circumstances. i have been told that jeep refused to do a recall and the replacements are very expensive. my vehicle only has 61,000 miles and again this is something that is wide spread in this model with other owners and a recall should be done. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited. the contact stated that the driver's side interior door handle fractured and the exterior handle had begun to fracture. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where they advised him that he would need to have the entire door panel replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 80,000. the vin was unavailable.
Over the past 2 years all 4 of my interior door handles are broken on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee. i only have passengers in my vehicle one day a week at the most. this is not a warranty issue, but a supplier's defective plastic resin mix. the entire door panel must be replaced not just the handle. *tr
The plastic on the interior door handles has cracked around the door handle. the driver side front interior door handle and the driver side rear interior door handle are inoperable because they are no longer attached to the door. *tr
I have 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the problem is that 3 of the 4 inside door handles are broken. the plastic that holds the handle in place is very thin cheep plastic that cracks and breaks there are holes is some of them and on the driver door the latch is completely broken. this can very easily become a life threating issue if there was a fire and some one could not get out of the car. if you look on line you can find that is a very common problem with the 05 models. this is a youtube link that will show you a in detail the problem that i am talking about(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsfrz7cibky&feature=related) if you need to contact me to verify anything or have any questions. My 2005 jeep grand cherokee has suffered the already filed complaint regarding the inferior interior door handle breakage. please get the manufacturer to recall and fix this safety issue. *tr
I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited. i just hit 50,000 miles, and it is sporadic at best that i have passengers in the rear. i have kept my vehicle in immaculate condition. however, both of my rear door handles are completely broken. i have to open the doors from the outside. my front two door handles are cracked with pieces missing but still operational for the moment, but i'm sure it's only a matter of time. if i were in an accident and rendered unconscious my rear passengers have no way of exiting the vehicle in case of fire or other event would require a quick exit. this is absolutely a safety hazard due to a manufacturer defect. *tr
Three of the door handles on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee have broken off and are unusable. the other two are cracking and i am fearful that they will be breaking off soon. the handles and the supporting door frames are all cracking in the same location and the handles then fall off. the manufacturer has been unwilling to even discuss the issue. the dealer states it is $700 -$900 per door to fix. parts to fix the door handles are unavailable for sale outside the dealerships. due to the safety issue of being unable to exit the back seat area from the inside, i am unable to allow anyone to ride in the back seats at this time. if an accident were to occur, they would be unable to exit the car from the inside. there are numerous complaints posted as well as a website where hundreds of people are stating the same exact issue with their 2005 jeep. there was not any outside circumstances that caused this defect. the dealer states it is normal wear and tear. this is an unacceptable safety hazard. i hope you will address as a recall before someone is seriously injured because they cannot get out of the vehicle. here is a link to a website with tons of complains on this issue http://www.denlorstools.com/autoblog/2010/11/jeep-grand-cherokee-interior-door-handle-broken-recall/#comment-11230 *kb
The interior door handles of my 2005 jeep grand cherokee are breaking, rendering them inoperable. i have attached a video link detailing the problem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsfrz7cibky i have contacted the dealer where i purchased the vehicle. since my vehicle is out of warranty, it will cost me $700.00 per door. i did not cause the damage. the problem stems from weak plastics. i contacted the corporate office to express my concern and inquire if a recall has been issued. the representative i spoke with stated they had not heard of this problem and there is no planned recall. this is a real problem and should be address! i have spoke with numerous owners and repair shops, they have seen this problem with the 2005 jeep grand cherokee. what if i was in a life treating situation and needed to get out of my vehicle? however i can not because my handle is broken. i don't have children, but what if they are in a similar situation and can't get out? it really concerns me that a tragedy must happen before chrysler will fix the problem. i do hope someone will investigate this and force a recall. 2005 jeep grand cherokee - all 4 plastic door handles have broken off - plastic falling apart and into inside of door - the only way to get out is to open from the outside. very dangerous if you are unable to get out of vehicle - i have tried to gorilla glue them back together and they just keep crumbling. *tr
The interior door handles have broken off or are about to break off in my 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited hemi. there is a common manufacturers material defect, as the door handle "pocket" is made out a brittle plastic that shatters under normal use. this is dangerous because in an emergency, one would not be able to exit the vehicle because the interior door handle does not work. you have to open the power window and open the door from the outside, obviously this is unacceptable and needs to be addressed by chrysler/jeep. *tr
3 out of 4 of the interior door handles molding are broken and because of that, you can not open the doors from the inside using the doors handles.you have to let down the windows to open both of the back and front passenger doors in order to get out of the car. the driver side is beginning to have the same trouble with opening. the dealer price for replacement cost is about $200+ not including labor. i checked the internet for a solution only to discover that is a major problem with this year's model and many complaints have been filed with chrysler. all said that chrysler refused to help with the problem which is very costly for the average working person. to me it is a serious safety hazard when driving the car. what if the car catches fire, or rollover in a accident or goes in a body of water? i am hesitate to drive the vehicle because of that. all car owners expect to make repairs to their vehicle from daily use. however, it should not be the owner responsibility to pay for a repair when it is a know fact that many owners are having the same problem on the same model and year of the vehicle. chrysler should be made to have recall to correct the problem. *tr
17jan11 -- door handle faulty -- i own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee that two have cracked at the door handle. if they continue to fall apart the vehicle occupant will be trapped within the vehicle. i have contacted chrysler and they are not willing to fix or help with the $1,400.00 bill for just the two door panels. if the battery were to die you would be trapped in the vehicle, or if you were forced off of the road and ended up in a lake you could not get out. my friend has explained this to chrysler and they do not feel that it is a concern that they have to worry about. i explained that i would send pictures of the vehicle to show it is in excellent condition, and garage kept (no damage to the vehicle), adult driven. why did the other two panels crack, they have no answer. *tr
Interior door handles have broken. rear passengers cannot exit vehicle. soon the driver side door will completely fail. *tr
