Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Door handle cracked if there was fire and a frantic person used it, it would break. i feel this issue is a big safety hazard jeep should replace with better material it already has to go in for a different recall. *tr

We have purchased a used 2005 jeep with 2 broken door handles. searching the internet shows that this is a common problem with these jeeps. this is truly a safety hazard seeing as no one could escape this vehicle should there be an accident. since this is a problem many seem to have, i feel jeep needs to step up and repair this very serious issue! *tr

When i went to get out of my jeep this morning i opened the door as i normally do. i then heard a crack and noticed the driver's side door handle pulled completely out of the door. the brittle cheap plastic piece that holds the handle in the door just designated. the unfortunate part is that i cannot open my door now therefore if i am in an accident and the car is on fire i will not be able to exit the care which is very scary for me. i hope chrysler recalls this issue. you would think a $50000 car would last. *tr

On june 11, 2013, i pulled into a convenience store parking lot. i put my (2005 jeep grand cherokee) in park & got out (the engine was still running). after a moment or so, my jeep started rolling forward. it rolled between the fueling islands & it was headed towards the street. my jeep hit a yellow pole & that stopped it from rolling into the street. (the yellow pole is a safety pole that protects the fire hydrant). i am 100% confident that i put my jeep in park before i got out of it. i was shocked & scared when i saw it rolling down the lot. i filed an accident claim with my insurance company. the damage was around $6,000. my deductible was $500. today, (august 13, 2013), i received a safety recall notice from chrysler. the reason for the recall is the "final drive controller module software may unintentionally cause the transfer case to shift into the neutral position without input from the driver. this condition could allow the vehicle to roll away inadvertently while the vehicle is parked and cause a crash without warning." i was (and i still am) 100% confident that i put my vehicle in park before i got out of it. what are my options at this point? my insurance company paid the claim & i paid my deductible. now, my insurance rates will go up. who should be responsible for this? how do i proceed? *tr

Rear passenger side door handle is broken. no idea how or when it happened. on june 4, 2013, my son tried to open the door from the inside and it wouldn't open. i figured he just had a hard time and i let him out from the outside. 3 days later, i opened the door from the outside to let my son in and immediately noticed that some of the plastic molding around the interior door handle was broken off and missing and the door handle was hanging limp. i am certain that there was no missing plastic 3 days prior when the door wouldn't open from the inside, but i don't know how or when the plastic broke off. i'm guessing it's down inside the door panel. frustrating since those rear door handles are rarely used. i almost always open the rear doors from the outside because my kids are small and still ride strapped into car seats, so they're not able to get out themselves. having read other complaints, this must be some sort of defect. there's no reason a door handle that is rarely used should have broken off, and it's especially strange that it seems to have just broken apart when no one was touching it. *tr

Interior door handle broke off - known problem but chrysler not addressing - evac safety concern!! *tr

The trunk door for this car does not stay open and hits your head of can close on your hand if you are not careful. i have taken it to the dealer and they told me that the parts that hold the door open need to be changed (they look like hydraulic arms).

All of the interior door handles molding are broken and because of that, you can not open the doors from the inside using the doors handles.you have to let down the windows to open both of the back and front passenger doors in order to get out of the car. the driver side is beginning to have the same trouble with opening. the dealer price for replacement cost is about $2500.00 not including labor. i checked the internet for a solution only to discover that is a major problem with this year's model and many complaints have been filed with chrysler. all said that chrysler refused to help with the problem which is very costly for the average working person. to me it is a serious safety hazard when driving the car. what if the car catches fire, or rollover in a accident or goes in a body of water? i am hesitate to drive the vehicle because of that. all car owners expect to make repairs to their vehicle from daily use. however, it should not be the owner responsibility to pay for a repair when it is a know fact that many owners are having the same problem on the same model and year of the vehicle. chrysler should be made to have recall to correct the problem. there should be a recall or class action law suit on this safety issue. *tr

All four doors, the door unlock/open handles are made of plastic and are disintegrating and falling apart. this makes it impossible to open the door from the inside of vehicle. handle is made from cheap brittle plastic and all are falling apart, even those on doors that are not used frequently. jeep has said the entire door panel has to be replaced at a cost of over $800.00 per door panel x 4 doors = $3200.00!!! this is an important safety issue since the lever mechanism is plastic made into the door panel. jeep needs to have a factor recall to replace these defective door unlock/open handles. *tr

all 4 interior door opening housing breaking/failing: ***this is a dangerous safety issue ' if handles break or are inoperable in certain emergency situations, passengers may not be able to exit the vehicle, causing serious injury or death!*** *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the instrumental panel, interior, and exterior lighting failed. the failures occurred intermittently. in addition, the vehicle stalled. the contact also mentioned that the interior passenger and both rear door handles fractured and detached. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the shifting cluster needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the contact received nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system) exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the dealer stated that the parts would not be available until approximately september 2015. the manufacturer was made aware of the delay. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 80,000.

In march of 2013 the right door in the back seat handle cracked, at first you were still able to open it then one day it completely broke off and now you can no longer open it from the inside, at first i thought maybe my daughter had pulled a little to hard on it, then i started to look at the all 3 other door handles and they are all cracked and slowly starting to break like the right rear door. i called the dealer and they told me that i has to replace all the door panels for $250.00 each there was no way to just replace the actual handle. *tr

The interior door handles broke when being lightly used. the plastic cracked and the handle came off. it looks like this is a common issue. i email chrysler about this and they blew it off as no big deal. this is a big deal and a safety issue!! if the handle breaks at a time when emergency evacuation from the vehicle is needed then that person will become trapped. this needs to be addressed. *tr

The cups around the door handles on the interior panel of the door began cracking and over time eventually failed and crumbled completely rendering the door handle useless. obviously this a huge safety hazard as occupants can not exit the vehicle should there be an emergency. through research this seems to be a far too common occurrence for this model vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the driver and passenger side front door handles were fractured, causing the door handles to separate from the door panel. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 34,558.

I purchased a used 2005 jeep grand cherokee. a few days after i bought it i was cleaning the inside and opened the back passenger door. upon doing so i noticed the handle is broken. it is still operable but i don't know how long it will last. i looked online and see that apparently everyone that has this model has the same problem, some people with all 4 handles useless and unable to open any door from the inside. i have a 3 yr old son that sits in the seat where the handle is breaking. if there was an accident or emergency i want the door to be able to open. if the handle breaks, because of a manufacturer defect, and he cuts his hand on the jagged plastic i think that could cause a lawsuit. if i have an adult in the back seat and there is an emergency the person may not be able to exit. this is not safe or acceptable. *tr

The 2005 jeep grand cherokee has a very flawed interior door handle. the plastic molding of the interior door trim panel is composed of composite material that is susceptible cracking and breaking, at the focal point from which the door handle is located. all four of our interior door handles are broken, rendering our escape from the vehicle from an accident thru the use of our windows or windshields. after doing some research, i've discovered that this a common theme for this particular vehicle: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f67/2005-broken-interior-door-handles-1132403/ http://www.denlorstools.com/autoblog/2010/11/jeep-grand-cherokee-interior-door-handle-broken-recall/http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/showthread.php?511563-broken-rear-inside-door-handle-any-experiences http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f16a9e4/88 http://www.jeepgarage.org/f5/2005-wk-limited-with-broken-interior-door-panels-5834.html just to name a few from a simple google search. i find highly irresponsible for a corporation such as chrysler to not take ownership of the failure of their vehicles design. so i am begging you is there anything that i can do to remedy this situation? i honestly do believe that my fiance's jeep is unsafe to drive because if she is ever involved in an accident, she may not be able to get out of the vehicle in time. after contacting my local jeep dealership i was absolutely shocked from the solution to my problem.to replace the broken door handle on the vehicle, you must replace the entire interior door trim panel. costs: front driver and passenger doors- $947.00 each; rear passenger doors- $640 each. *tr

The interior door handles are broken. the driver side door is barely hanging on, it's getting more and more difficult to open the door to get out. the front passenger side door handle is starting to crack, i have put a little epoxy on the handle to try and make it last longer. the cost to replace the handles are ridiculous! these doors are a death trap!!!!! *tr

2005 jeep has been slipping into neutral since february 2013. it caused me to have an accident because i couldn't get out of the way of rear-oncoming traffic. no major damage was done thankfully! a few weeks later i experienced a rollaway. i went into the sitter to pick up my son. after about 5 minutes of being inside i my jeep roll across the street! i go running outside, opened the door and pulled up the emergency break...just missing an embankment! since the "neutral" thing started i have had several service lights come on. my mechanic performed a diagnostic check and he said its all electrical. also, i've had issues with the front passenger window going up/down slower than the rest of the windows since 3 months into purchase. other issues are cracked door handles (both front doors), replacing taillight kit, ac switch-a few times as it would only work on high. *tr

Passenger opened up their door to exit the vehicle, and a hole cracked in the door panel next to the door handle. there was no abuse to the door, just a weak spot and defect in the manufacturing of the door panel. jeep does not sell just the inside door handle piece, they make you replace the whole door panel which is quite expensive! there are numerous complaints of the same thing happening to other jeep owners with vehicles of the same year. this is a safety issue if you cannot open a door in case of an accident or emergency! *tr

I was sitting at a red light and a florida state trooper was behind me, also stopped. when the light turned green, the cars in front of me started to move forward so i took my foot off of the brake to ease forward, awaiting to hit the gas when the trooper hit his gas, slamming into the back of my jeep so hard that it lifted the back of my jeep up and forced the front end to hit the vehicle in front of me at the bottom of his rear bumper - pushing me forward into the car in front of me approximately 7 feet. my jeep stalled during the hit but the air bags did not deploy. *tr

I opened the door to get out and the interior driver's side handle broke off of the door panel. i went to the dealer and the handle is part of the door panel. the handle's hinge is set in plastic which happens to be in the same one piece door panel. the door panel has to be replaced ($795 for the part and $259 for the installation). on line i noticed that there were many complaints with this problem. it is possible to get locked in the car. *tr

All four interior door handles are falling apart. one door handle is completely inoperable and as such the passenger is unable to open the door from the inside. this presents a huge safety issue. the driver's door handle is barely hanging on and i fear that soon i will not be able to open my door from the inside anymore. chrysler has yet to issue a recall on this very defective product. please pressure chrysler to issue a recall to address this issue. the cost to replace the door panels for all four doors is over $2,000. *tr

The child safety lock on the drivers side rear door keeps moving to unlocked, making this a safety issue because a child could open the door from the inside while the car is in motion. *tr

Cracks in interior door plastic leaving door handles difficult to manage. same problem as so many others have reported. called jeep directly and no solution offered. dealership is not willing to fix the broken part under warranty. *tr

2005 jeep cherokee limited. there has been an issue for years regarding the plastic door panels interior of the car. with all 4 doors cracked and 1 ( drivers door) will not open from the inside. this is a life safety to all occupants in this car. with a crash or fire to happen and you cant get out of a door due to poor design of the door by the manufacture. theses door panels start out with small hair cracks and one time of opening the door you have cracked all the plastic and not able to open up the door. i feel that jeep needs to stand up and correct this issue on a recall. after this happening you can take it in and they will put the new design that doesn't have this poor design for just over 800 dollars a door. so with this manufacture making a change to the panel, says they knew it was a poor design. this is happening to my understanding jeeps of 2005- to around 2010. i have paid close attention to the same year that i own and 90% of the time you see the cracks at the handles inside. please lets figure something out before people lose there kids life or there own life. *tr

Broken interior door handles. passenger back handle is completely gone, door cannot be opened from inside. driver side front is about to fall out and the other 2 are cracked. this is a serious defect. if the doors cannot be opened from inside, passengers and driver can be trapped in an accident. *tr

Interior door handles are inoperable. cannot open door from the inside of the vehicle. handles crack and break easily. this causes operator and passengers unable to exit vehicle in a timely fashion. doors must be opened from the outside. *tr

I'm active duty member and been stationed overseas since 2007, my vehicle has been in storage since, last september was taken out so my wife could drive it, a month after taken out of storage all door hands broke -off, now we are not able o open doors from the inside creating a safety issue, looking on line i realized 'm not alone with this issue, my vehicle has only 51, 000 miles and i shouldn't have issues of this caliber. *tr

Interior door latch on rear driver and passenger side door completely broke off and drivers side front door latch beginning to crack around plastic and incur same problem. this is a huge safety issue in case of accident or fire one would be trapped inside vehicle unable to exit presumably dying from injuries. this is an obvious on going problem with the jeep cherokee and i feel chrysler needs to own responsibility for this and incur the expense of all repairs.

Three of my door handles have broken off and are not functional from the inside of the vehicle. the only handle that is in tact is the drivers. *tr

My door handles on my truck would not let me get out . i had to put the window down to get out of my truck . i hear alot of people with the model jeep i have also encountered this problem . *tr

All four of my door handles in my 2005 jeep grand cherokee developed cracks in them between 2011-2012. the back left passenger has completely broken out and my son is no longer able to exit my jeep from that door. the driver's side door handle is the next to go. this will leave me unable to exit my jeep.this is a vehicle safety issue that i am very concerned about. i spoke to service advisor at airpark chrysler/jeep that said he had never heard/seen that before and there was nothing he could do to help me.i have researched on the internet for recalls and it appears that jeep is not willing to recall this major vehicle safety issue with hundreds of complaints about the same defective plastic door handles. *tr

Door handles inside the vehicle are all broken, making it impossible to open doors inside the cabin. this of course makes for a considerable safety issue if driver or passenger needed to exit vehicle in case of an accident. jeep wants approximately $3000 to fix plastic handle supports. this should be a recall on all affected models. it seems to be a very common problem. but as usual, a class action lawsuit will probably be required to fix a simple $5 part. i find it completely unacceptable that this can not be fixed for a reasonable price. jeep is basically robbing the public for those who wish to pay the amount for the repair. *tr

The plastic wells behind all four interior door handles have broken, leaving a gaping hole ringed by sharp spikes of plastic shards. this occurred prior to my purchasing the vehicle on the date indicated as the date of the incident. this is a widely reported issue. the next stage of the failure is that the interior door handles will eventually break out of the door and come off into the door operator's hand, requiring the door to be opened from the outside. once this occurs, the failure will become a significant safety risk as passengers will be unable to open the door from the inside, effectively trapping them inside in the event of a severe accident or fire. jeep has fielded thousands of complaints about this particular failure and numerous videos made by unhappy consumers have been posted to youtube and other similar sites. jeep currently charges $500-$700 to replace the entire door panels while a niche market has been created by individuals selling injection molded replacement parts that jeep does not sell. this is an unacceptable solution and jeep needs to issue a recall. it becomes a minor safety issue the moment our fingers come into close proximity of the sharp plastic shards surrounding the opening, and it becomes a major safety issue the moment we and our passengers are no longer able to open a door from inside the vehicle. please make this happen. *tr

The area where the door handles cracked and the handles are hanging from them, happened during a period of weeks, the doors and handles were used in the manner that they intended to be used. i have been looking on line and it seems to be a common complaint for this make and model so i think there must be a recall and the company should pay for the repairs. the local dealership wants to charge $250 to repair each door and it has been impossible for me to find used parts. step-up to the plate jeep! the vehicle was not cheap and is not the buyer's fault that the company appears to use cheap parts for their vehicles. *tr

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited's interior door handles have broken from their door panels. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the interior door handle housing on all of the doors fractured. the vehicle was taken to dealer who confirmed the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and no repairs were made to the vehicle. the failure mileage was 127,000 and the current mileage was 150,000.

Interior passenger door handle/panel is totally broken out. tried several different methods of saving it from doing so, but to no avail, it is totally gone. have read several items via the internet for about a year not stating that this is a known problem by jeep drivers, but jeep has offered no assistance on this matter. i feel that this is a huge safety issue, as to once you cannot open the door from the inside, you put yourself at an enormous risk for getting someone stuck inside during a crash. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the front driver, front passenger, and rear passenger side door handles fractured. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing, but was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 28,000. updated 10/30/14*lj the consumer stated 3 out of 4 door locks were broken and cannot be opened from the inside. updated 04/27/2015 *js

Broken interior door handles and can't open door from inside. i have read lots of people having same issues with jeep grand cherokee. *tr

Interior door handles are made with material that do not support the normal wear and tear. clearly a safety hazard to be riding a vehicule, whether as the driver or passenger, and if an emergency calls for you to abandon it, as you pull the handle to open your door the handle brakes in your hand and cannot open the door. in the event of an emergency, we are talking, not about minutes, but seconds to react and move away from danger. failure to open, could represent the difference between minutes and seconds that could prevent major injury if not death in case of an accident. *tr

Front driver-passenger side door panels. i recently discovered that my front driver and passenger door panels have cracked around the interior door handle. the cracks have progressed to the point where the door handles dislodged from the panel from repeated use. the cost of each panel is $770.00, excluding labor. the dealer where purchased stated "there is nothing we can do about it." what's disconcerting is that the back of panel shows reinforcement (thicker plastic) for the window buttons but the material is paper-thin for the door handle. once the door handle falls off, the only way to open the door is to roll down the window and push the exterior button. i have filed a complaint with chrysler. *tr

Plastic framing around front and rear passenger inside door handles cracked and disintegrated, leaving door handles unusable. passengers cannot exit the vehicle without door being opened from outside the vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the interior door handle on the front driver's side fractured, making it very difficult to open the door. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who stated that the door panel needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance because the vehicle was no longer under warranty. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 52,000.

Interior door handles are defective. the plastic surrounding the interior door handles has become brittle and broken allowing pieces to fall inside the door. this breakage has rendered the door handles inoperative and prevents the door from being opened from the inside. in the event of an accident the occupants of the vehicle would be trapped inside, especially if the power windows also became inoperative. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the plastic interior door handles were fractured. the contact stated that all the interior door handles except the front passenger side door handle were fractured. the contact stated that the sun roof would leak whenever it rained. the vehicle was taken to be inspected and was diagnosed that the roof needed to be replaced. the contact also stated that there was mold and mildew from the water leakage. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 80,000.

From the many forums i have researched, this is not the first complaint about faulty door handles in the 2005 jeep grand cherokee. all four of mine have cracked and large chunks of the inside of the "cup" have fallen off into the door panel. one of the doors in just about inoperable because of the location of the crack and i know its only a matter of time before the rest of them follow. as a mother of 2 children, it scares me to think that they could be stuck inside of a vehicle that could have been in an accident. to me, there is no excuse for the company to not issue a recall on the parts, as they will sooner or later be looking down the line of a huge class action law suit for someone losing a passenger or their own life due to being unable to open their door. imagine a car rolling over and catching fire. as quickly as that could go up in flames in only a matter of seconds, what counts are the moments that person is fighting with getting a door open, or in a vehicle without having to fight and saving a life or 5, as this is a 5 passenger car. i would strongly suggest that this be seriously considered and pressure be applied to the manufacturers of jeep to issue a recall for all vehicles with that type of door handle. *tr
