All 4 interior door handles are cracking and breaking at the base of the handle. i can barely get out of my jeep opening from the inside, and i have to get out to let my son out at school. my children must wait for me to open their doors, and if i were to get into a collision and my car on fire, i would in no way have time to roll my window down, get out, then let my kids out before an explosion of gasoline and other fluids engulfed my vehicle. this is not normal wear and tear, or the driver handle would be the worst, for it is most used. the driver handle was the last to break, and i'm not happy for the money i'm soon to spend, especially when i search online and find so many others having the very same complaint. *tr
Both rear door handles and everything around them from the interior has broken off. we cannot open the rear doors from the inside. if you are in the back you couldn't get out in an accident and/or fire. i sees allot of complaints on this online. used like normal, no abuse. *tr
Driver side interior door handle has completely broken off. the other 3 door handles have also started to crack and become loose. it starts with a crack in the plastic, the crack then turns into a hole above the metal handle. the actual metal handle itself then loosens up and completely comes off. this is a serious problem that many other 2005 jeep grand cherokee owners have had. it's not from excessive use, it's a manufacturer defect. i cannot get out of my car unless someone open the door from the outside. i would assume this is a serious safety hazard considering it traps the operator inside the vehicle. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact received a notice for recall nhtsa campaign id number: 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline, structure). however, the part needed was unavailable to perform the repair. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the contact had not experienced a failure.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that all four interior door handles cracked and were loose. as a result, the contact was not able to be open the rear doors from inside. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was confirmed all door handles needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 96,000.
The inside door handles in the front seat, both have become hard and brittle and have crumbled. if the driver's handle deteriorates any more the door handle will no longer work and you could be trapped in the car in the event of an accident. i've researched this on the internet and found that this is a common problem. the passenger side has a huge chunk of plastic that has broken off and this inside door handle is rarely used. *tr
I purchased the grand cherokee just the day before the incident. when i purchased it i did notice on driver side door plastic was broken around handle but was still operational. the next day my daughter was getting out of front passenger door when plastic broke around handle and handle itself would not work. i did some research online and saw that thousands of grand cherokee owners have had the same exact problem. there was even a guy who started making and selling his own replacement kit. this could be a huge safety issue if something were to happen and driver or passengers needed to exit vehicle immediately and could not if windows didn't work to use exterior handle to exit. why hasn't this been recalled? *js
All 4 interior door handles are broken in the event of an accident or fire i fear i won't be able to exit the vehicle i must roll the window down and use the exterior door handle to open the doors major safety problem. *tr
In route to open gym for my 3yr old, after exiting expressway in traffic approx 5-7mins, suv shuts off. after it shut off it would nt start for approx 4 mins, it did not fully crank yet cranked, in a putting pattern, i was able to pull it out of traffic into an office park located at 3525 piedmont rd ne atl, ga 30308 in front of building 7 entering from piedmont rd. once parked, my temp gauge was on hot panned hard right, the suv would not start, i allowed it to cool down to halfway, during that time i made 4 attempts to start the suv. each time it would putter, or sound as if it was out of gas. once suv cooled to half i attempted to start and it started in the same putter fashion as before, yet appearing to catch as if it was start normal, all the while smoking out the back a slight pop could be heard coming from underneath the front of the vehicle, yet as it appeared to start i would give it gas with hopes that it would catch and then it just shut off and started smoking and there was a noticeably different odor that my 3 yr old and i smelled, from there i got out of the truck to see if the smoke was coming from the radiator, since the temp gauge was just on hot, i notice there was a fire burning in the lower back of the engine region, i immediately lowered the hood due to not having anything to prop it open with, i immediately got my 3 yr old son out of the vehicle to safety, i return to get his car seat and anything to hopefully salvage, i then return to the suv to put out the fire out as best i could, i appeared to out on both sides and just smoking badly. called a ride to take me and my 3yr old home. the following day i checked the suv, the engine area, hood, front windshield had completely burned, there is no hood area, the hood is in the windshield, and everything else forward chard and melted, to the yellow pieces, i was able to take photos, and a video. *tr
When backing into parking space the car took off like a rocket ship/full throttle (5.7 hemi) like it had a mind of it's own. the result was property damage (unknown amount) and car damage over $7600.00 not including car rental for 2 weeks. chrysler sent inspector to body shop and their determination was they found nothing wrong and said the case is closed. a jeep/chrysler dealership replaced the throttle body january 31, 2014 under warranty. we know this was not driver error. it was the scariest 15 seconds of our lives and could have easily killed someone. now we wonder when will it happen again? we would like to know, has there ever been an engine going to full throttle accident involving a 2005 jeep/chrysler product? *tr
3 out of the 4 interior door handles in my 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited have severely cracked and are even missing parts of the panel. during my research online i have found that i am no where near the only one having this issue with these models and it appears to be a manufacturer defect.
Right rear interior door handle plastic was broken while getting out of the vehicle. plastic is extremly brittle. right front interior door handle broke the same way about a week later the door handle was not jerked or abused in any way. they both looked to be in perfect condition before they broke. *js
There is a known issue on the jeep grand cherokee 2005 model where the interior door handle housing cracks and the handle falls and becomes unusable. this happens on all doors of car but the first one to go in my case was the drivers side door. once the handle falls you are unable to get out of the car using that door. in the event of an emergency this could be extremely hazardous. jeep has not provided a fix except to replace the entire door. a recall is needed as almost everyone with this model of car is having the same issue.
Since we purchased this vehicle, the rear door handles and the passenger door handles have been cracked. over the course of us owning the vehicle for the past year the rear door handles no longer open from the inside. this is a not only a problem but a safety issue because if there would be an accident or a fire or anything people in the back seats would be stuck in the vehicle. i have read many, many similar issues regarding this issue and how jeep refuses to fix it unless you buy a whole new door panel which can be up to $600 a door. chrysler should really recall these vehicles, it is a terrible design and something needs to be done. *tr
We purchased a second hand jeep 2005 grand cherokee last may 2013. it was a one owner one driver vehicle. by the looks of the interior there were no other passengers ever in the car. very clean and unused. by december 2013 we noticed cracking and breaking around the passenger and rear door handles. we utilize the rear doors for our grandchildren. by february 2014 the rear door behind the driver had broken and has apparently unattached the mechanism that opens the door, which now is unable to exit the vehicle through that door. when this incident occurred i went online and saw that it was a common defect with this make and model. i contacted jeep and jeep dealer. no one responded back from complaint from jeep. the dealer told us it would cost $550 per door to repair. when i contacted jeep i asked how many casualties does it take for a recall. my granddaughters sit back there and could never exit the vehicle in an emergency situation. the handles are made of plastic as is the piece it is connected too. they actually sell replacement repair kits for this on line and dealership where we purchased said it would replace them for a large fee if i purchased the repair kit. since this is a known defect and safety issue i don't feel we should have to pay to repair something that should have been a manufacturing recall. if the vehicle would catch on fire there would be fatalities.. the strongest handle is the drivers door?? which means it would take a lot longer for this one to break, do you think they knew this when manufacturing?? *tr
I went to open my driver's door this morning and it wouldn't open, had to open it from the inside. after open the door would not shut and latch. the plastic on the inside of the door handle is cracked and bad. common problem, chrysler group should recall this is a safety issue among many grand cherokees. *tr
Rear door of vehicle-trunk door-will sometimes not stay in place and has hit my fiance in the head a couple of times. unsure of cause, or how to fix. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that nhtsa campaign number: 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline , structure) had surpassed a reasonable time for repair. the dealer was contacted and advised that the part was not available for the recall repair. the contact had not experienced a failure. *tr
Door handle on 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo seems to be ready to break on driver door. i can see a sort of pin cracking through the door itself. this is a safety issue that needs to be fixed immediately. notified jeep dealer in concord, nc and i was told that i would have to buy a new door panel assembly to fix this as it is not under warranty. *tr
The jeep grand cherokee 2005 and up has inside door panels made of plastic ,and the door handles which allow opening the vehicle doors for the inside are attached to this weak plastic panel. over time the door handle plastic attachment points began to crack and break away , eventually causing the opening handle to fall off,and the door is then not able to be opened from inside. in the event of a crash or fire in the vehicle while this condition exists , the occupants at those doors would be unable to escape the vehicle thru the doors with this problem. chrysler service states that there are not enough complaints regarding this for them to assist me in any way, to repair this all the inside door panels must be replaced. chrysler customer service # 1-800-992-1997. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the rear interior door handles fractured and detached. in addition, the front passenger side interior door handle was fractured and would not open the door. the only handle that was functional was the front driver side door handle; however, it was also fractured. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the door panels would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
After christmas after taking my stepson's cousin home, i noticed that the door handles on the back doors were hanging, with the surrounding plastic busted. i thought it happened when the doors were opened, and that they were opened too hard. took to a dealer (chevy dealer, that i bought vehicle from) and was told that it would be better to replace entire door panels, instead of just the door handles. *tr
I haven't been in a wreck yet; but this is more of preventative measure. i have looked at multiple sites and seen where there have been thousands of complaints on interior door handles breaking off. i notified chrysler and they told me that was the 1st they have heard of it, and was willing to do anything about it. all four of my handles have broken off and i have rigged up the driver door, but as far as passengers they wouldn't be able to get out if their was an emergency. i would think jeep would step up and issue a recall on this poorly made product. *tr
I have a 2005 grand cherokee with a door handle. my driver door handle is just about to drop off.. i noticed the "loose" handles but my rear drivers side door doesn't have a handle for the same reason. jeep definitely needs to recall these issues before something happens. massive list of complains in the nhtsa website and jeep/chrysler has not issued a recall...huge safety concern for all of us that have kids in the back seat and other passengers and god forbid there's an accident opens like you mentioned a fire or an accident and your passengers can't exit the vehicle. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that all four door handles fractured and separated from the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was determined that the handles needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 44,000.
Where you open up the door by the door handle it has started breaking on my front driver side and both of the doors in the back seat. *tr
Jeep door handles are faulty. the plastic surrounding the door handle is a faulty product. the plastic starts cracking and falling apart. then the actual handle has no support and begins to have problems. i can no longer lock the vehicle properly. three doors are affected thus far. *tr
I just bought a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited 5.7l hemi and after purchasing the vehicle, i noticed that the rear passenger side interior door handle had snapped off so that you are unable to open the door from the inside. the front passenger side door handle is cracked, but not completely broken off yet. there is some spider cracking on the rear drivers side handle as well. after doing a little research, i realized that it's not a part that can just be replaced, it must be replaced by jeep and can cost upwards of $3,000. i see this as a very urgent safety issue because if i get in a car wreak or there is a fire, my passengers and i would have trouble exiting the vehicle. this is a problem that needs to be addressed by jeep and soon before this takes a tragic turn. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that upon inspection, the driver's side door handle panel and the passenger's side rear door handle panel failed to operate normally. the contact also mentioned that the problem recurred intermittently and passengers could not exit the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who stated that the handles had to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was unknown.
All four of my door handles are cracked. i can no longer open my rear doors from the inside because the handle is completely busted. my two front handles are almost the same. if i have passengers riding in the back seat i have to open their door from the outside. i fear that if i'm ever in an accident no one will be able to exit the vehicle unless an outside person in present. this is a very serious and dangerous situation, and i feel that jeep has a responsibility to its consumers to fix such a safety issue. *tr
Interior door handles on front passenger and rear driver side have both failed. the handle pivots on brittle plastic and it cracks unless you're extremely gentle. definitely a manufacturer defect. *tr
Driver side door handle fell apart when opening door. two years earlier, rear passenger door did same. front passenger door also cracking. real safety hazard. can not exit vehicle with window rolled up. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the plastic interior doors handles were cracked. the front driver's side and both rear doors exhibited the failure and could not be engaged. the contact and passenger's would have to open the window and engage the rear door handles in order to exit the vehicle. in addition, there were shards of the door handle breaking off and falling into the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was advised that the door handles, the molding and the frame of the door would need replacing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 70000.
All four door handles are coming apart and one is completely broke. if there is an emergency, noone will be able to get out if the windows have been damaged. there are hundreds of cherokee and commander owners facing this same situation. this is a severe and life-threatening safety issue and chrysler jeep refuses to take responsibility for using cheap material that literally disintegrates on its own. their price for fixing this defect is $700-$900 per door and they absolutely refuse to cover any portion of it. if a company freely decides to use inferior materials just to make more profit, this creates safety issues, especially children and infants, then they must be held accountable and responsible for its repairs at no cost to the owner. *tr
2 of my rear doors on my 2005 grand cherokee broke off, so far total of 3 of my inside door handles are broken, this is definitely a safety issue if i were to get into a car accident and nobody can get out because door handles are broken... this should be a safety recall from jeep on 2005 grand cherokee's *js
all 2 handle's are broken and 2 are cracked this is a dangerous to get out of the car if their is a accident. i called the dealer and he said the cost is on me i do not have that kind of money. and i am not along i see at youtube when i was looking how to fix the door, but when i seen this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsfrz7cibky i said, what! i need your help! *tr
All 4 interior door handles on the vehicle have broken off. which doesn't allow egress of the vehicle unless a window is lowered and door is opened from the outside. in the event of a vehicle crash, fire, flood, power failure, etc... the occupants would not be able to exit the vehicle. *tr
Driver's side rear inside door handle broke, making it impossible to open door from the inside (major safety issue). upon inspection, i found that the plastic surrounding the handles on both passenger-side doors are also cracked in the same spot, they will soon fail. called dealership (farrish, in fairfax va), they said jeep wouldn't do anything for me as out of warranty, and entire door panels would need to be replaced at $780 each (note: not the dealership's fault). given the number of complaints on this and other websites, it is clear jeep is aware of this issue and has decided to to address it, despite the obvious safety implications. furthermore, they have refused to offer the handle as a separate part - replacing a door panel with another one with a similarly defective part is not economically feasible, and doesn't seem like a real solution as the new part is just as likely to fail as the old one. a recall should be implemented. the problem is so widespread that there is now an aftermarket solution (door handle replacement kits) designed specifically to address this problem, but you can't get them installed by the dealership. *tt
The door handle was made with cheap plastic and came completely off on one door. i have 3 kids, this is a huge safety concern if there is an accident they will not be able to get out. all 4 door handles have a crack in the handle ready to break off at any moment that is visible to anyone who looks at the door. *tr
Interior door handles broke off making it dangerous to get out of vehicle in an emergency. *tr
Plastic interior door handles are all crumbling and doors cannot be opened from inside creating a safety hazard for passengers. all four handles are affected. window must be opened and car door must be opened from the outside while leaning out the window. *tr
The plastic interior door panels are breaking at the door handles. when the cracks proceed far enough the interior door handles break off trapping occupants inside. all four doors are broken, the driver's door least of all. it is not a wear and tear issue but a real safety concern. *tr
All four (4) interior door handles have cracked. the result of this issue will impact the ability to exit the vehicle from inside. in the event of an emergency such as fire/accident, passengers will not be able to adequately exit the vehicle to escape from potential injury/threat. *tr
I was driving to work on a highway and proceeded to change lanes into the left lane, immediately lost control of the vehicle and could not get it under control. i ended up in crashing into the safety cables in the middle of the road. it really did some damage. i managed to not his other vehicles during this scary incident. this was reported to our insurance company and we still have the vehicle. *tr
My door handles on 4 of my doors (not one or two but four) on the inside have cracked, some cracked where one is unable to open the door from the inside which now makes this a safety issue. this is problem because the plastic in the doors are so brittle that any force can cause the handle to break. i have approached jeep about the issue and they do not even listen to my complaint and said i just had to buy a new replacement door panel. a door panel to replace a faulty door handle is quite unacceptable and not a logical excuse for their bad and very cheap product. you pay good money to stay with an american vehicle but with excuses like this make me want to buy foreign.something needs to be done as i have researched the issue to find many people in my same situation... *tr
The door handles of the interior doors are all breaking apart. this could be a safety issue in case of an accident and the people inside of the vehicle not being able to escape. the material is very thin plastic that is very cheap and the reason not one but all of the interior door handles are broken and/or cracked about to break. *tr
