We have classified the 33 complaints from 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC into the following categories.
The nhtsb should make daimler/chrysler fix jeep grand cherokee brake rotor problems at no cost to the owner. our jgc had all four brake rotors replaced at 14000 mi. because of strong vibration when the brakes were applied. the vibration at highway speed was bad enough to make the vehicle difficult to keep in control. that time, d/c would not cover the problem because the warranty period for brakes ended at 12000 mi. the dealer replaced them at their expense. all four brake rotors must be replaced again at 27000 mi. because of the same vibration problem. neither d/c nor the dealer will cover the costs this time, although they both admit there is a chronic recurring problem with these brake rotors due to flawed engineering.*ak
At 21,500 miles this is my third set of rotors to be replaced.*ak
Front and rear rotors have failed (warped) six times on this vehicle. *ak
Recurring warping of brake rotors under normal use causing excessive vibration in steering under braking at all speeds. rotors have been resurfaced twice (at 7986 and 29489 miles), rotors replaced (at 45176 miles), problem still recurring. dealer indicates caliper problem that chrysler is aware of and developing fix, but no notification or follow up from dealer. mr
It is obvious this problem with severely defective brake rotors is a major safety defect. i feel that if the proper safety organization were to investigate this thoroughly by testing braking distance, brake handling, and how abs brake system is affected it would be found to be a significant safety hazard in all the vehicles involved. i would not be surprised if some accidents could have all ready been avoided if this issue was resolved. this is a much more wide spread problem than may be realized as my brother-inlaw had the same problem with his 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo, but he just had them replace both front rotors, at his cost. i'm sure jeep is not writing to the nhtsa every time they replace these defective rotors, do they?
On vacation traveling through new mexico at the posted speed limit of 75 mph on ih40, when the brakes were applied a violent shimmy or pulsation in the front end occured which was translated to the steering wheel making control of the vehicle questionable. chrysler road assistance was contacted and they recommended hatch motor co. in show low, arizona which was our destination. hatch removed and turned the front rotors which was not covered by either the original waranty or the extended waranty. the problem was improved but not completely eliminated. on the return trip to carrollton, texas, the problem continued to worsen. upon our return home, the vehicle was taken to the dealer, huffines, who turned the rotors a second time stating that this was normal and that all rotors needed turning at 30,000 miles. again, this work was not covered by either of the warantys. my previous vehicle was a 1995 land rover discovery and after more than 90,000 miles, the rotors had never been turned and the brakes were perfect. something is basically wrong with the original installation, design or quality of these rotors. they should not fail at such low milage and in such a dangerous fashion. please insist that chrysler do something about this problem before someone is killed or seriously injured. nlm
After researching a problem with my 2000 grand cherokee on-line, a website encouaged me to file a complaint on this site. my vehicle shakes (steering wheel and whole truck) when even slightly touching the brake pedal at speeds of greater than 40 mph. based on what i have located on the internet, and what the dealership told me, this is a very very common problem in the 2000 jeep. i feel as if i could easily lose control of the vehicle due to the severity of the shaking. the dealership states chrysler does not cover this under warranty. i believe it is a safety hazard and they should find a way to fix the problem, as most people are having the rotors burn out again after a few thousand miles.*ak
First noticed vibration when stopping due to warped front brake rotors before 10000 miles. had serviced at dealer at 13373 miles per dailmer-chrysler tsb (rotors turned down, new "improved" brake pads). problem reoccurred and was taken back to the dealer at 29899 miles. dealer admits there is a design problem, but dailmer-chrysler will not, and hence will not cover the repair under warranty nor provide a more durable fix. complained to daimler-chrysler's customer service line and was extremely displeased at their complete failure to correct the defect. reviews of various internet discussion groups reveals this is not an isolated incident but a widespread problem with many similar (or even much worse) reports with daimler-chrysler again denying all responsibility. the brakes are clearly underdesigned for the application and pose a potential hazard due to increased braking distances caused by the warped rotors. after-market rotors apparently will correct the problem, but this cost should be incurred by daimler-chrysler. *ak
No summary listed for above vehicle. *ak
The automatic transmission shifts into 1-2 very roughly. took to the dealer and was told that the transmition needed to be replaced. brake rotors are worn very severly and car shakes when brakes are applied.*ak
brake rotors and pads have excessive wear and tear. vehicle loses control and vibrates when brakes are applied. rotors and pads were changed 5,000 miles ago. dealer was notified.*ak
Transfer case bad on delivery. snap ring not installed unit replaced. brake rotors warp every 20k miles. replaced with aftermarket at 40k.. steering column clunk and feels loose. dealer replaced with new, same problem exists. excessive clunking and looseness in driveline. loud clunk park to reverse dealer says normal but lots of complaints. mr
The brake rotors on this vehicle have warped 3 times now almost causing the car to veer out of control. when you apply the brakes the steering wheel shimmies very bad and its hard to control the car. the dealer has fixed this problem twice and now again at 37,000 miles the brake rotors are warped again.. this defect will eventually get someone injured or worse if chrysler won't fix it the right way. a few other people i know have this vehicle and have experienced the same reoccurring prolem with bad brake rotors.*ak
This is the 3rd time that the brake rotors have warped on this vehicle in 2 years. when you step on the brake pedal the steering wheel shimmies so bad its hard to control the car. it has been fixed twice before at the dealer and now again the brake rotors are warped. this seems to happen every 12 to 14 thousand miles. i have never had a car do this before in such a short time. chrsyler told me to bad that they are not fixing it again. there is positively a design flaw with this vehicle and chrysler must find the fix for it and recall all of these cars before many people get hurt. the dealer has been helpful but thet will not pay to fix it anymore and told me to call chrysler which i did to no availe. the service manager even told me that the company knows there is a problem with the rotors but can't figure out how to fix it and make it stay fixed. there needs to be something done about chrysler. they should repair these brakes on every car for as long as people own them. the problem is theirs and we as consumers are bearing the brunt of it. jeeps are expensive to buy and the brakes should last more than a few thousand miles.*ak
Front end shimmies when brakes are applied. *ak
While driving at any speed consumer felt pulsation in the brake pedal. dealer examined the vehicle and found that the rotors were warped. the rotors were replaced. however, the rotors needed to be replaced again. *ak
Steering wheel would vibrate and the brake pedal would pulsate when brakes are applied. dealer and manufacturer were notified. *ak *tt
Second set of rotors are being replaced at 6,000 miles. excessive wear of rotors causes vehicle to buck when trying to brake at high speeds.*ak
Consumer stated the front and rear brake pads have been replaced 6 times and the rotors have also been turned.*jb
When pressing on brakes to slow down front end and steering wheel would have a severe vibration. vehicle's hard to control when this happens. contacted dealership.*ak
I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo.i had the rotors resurfaced twice and the rotors and calipers replaced once in 20,000 miles.the jeep has 27,000 miles now and is starting to shake when you apply the brakes.why hasn't there been a recall. *aki
The brake pedal vibrated violently when applied. the dealer has been contacted. *ak scc
When applying brakes at highway speeds, vehicle starts vibrating and pulsating. took vehicle to dealer and had rotors redone, problem still exists.*ak
There is vibration when braking. dealer turned, then grounded front rotors at 10000 miles. there was vibration when braking again.*ak
1. transmission: having problems shifting from 2nd gear to 3rd gear until car is fully warmed; occasionally, the car stalled due to the gear not shifting properly; 2. brake rotors: rotors warp within 12,000 miles; changed new rotors and pads three times; 3. alignment: pulls to the right summary: transmission & brake rotors are known problems by dailerchrysler---unsafe vehicle. *la
When brakes applied the vehicle jumps to a stop. *ak
Our grand cherokee developed a severely pulsating brake pedal at 7,000 miles of non off road use, city driving, the selling dealer replaced the front rotors. this occurred again about 15,000 miles later, again with very gentle vehicle usage. the manufacturer claims the vehicle is outside of warranty period at 2 years, and brakes are not warrantied. we maintain there is a design deffect in this system allowing premature front rotor warpage leading to severe pedal and vehicle pulsation on brake applications at higher speeds. we have the assurance of a multitude of other jeep owners that we are not alone in our problem with this brake system. we have spent considerable time discussing this design deffect with daimlerchrysler, but they have obviously shifted their obligation to possible litigation, but not to insitute the required recall and component correction. can a brake system that suddenly alters from correct function, to one that causes the vehicle to shudder in an aggressive manner and cause the operators foot to shake severely after such an extremely short duty cycle be deemed normal? we are careful drivers, and can now avoid injury and property damage by repairing the problem, others might not be so lucky. forgive the length of this reply, the wilkinsons. *ak
Puchased vehicle 6/30/2000. on 11/30/2000 with only 8,541 miles, the dealer did a warranty replacement of front rotors and brake pads, which was necessary to correct heavy vibration when braking. vehicle is used 95% in town. seven month later, on 6/01/2001, same problem. dealer resurfaced front and back rotors and charged us an $80.00 (deductable) fee, with the balance paid by daimler chrysler as gooodwill. six months later, 12/14/2001 (15,314 miles) we asked the dealer to replace the rotors since the last fix, only 6 months ago did not last. they told us we would have to pay another $200 to replace the front rotors. we were told by "pat" the service technician that they now had a "permanent" fix to this wide spread problem. we did not have time to take it in and on 12/20/2001, while driving on snow packed roads the vehicle was unusually difficult to stop. it felt like the warped rotors impacted the anti-lock brake system to the point of fooling it self into releasing the brakes and alternately locking them up. i can't get more then 7-8 thousand mile out of a set of brakes on this vehicle! my 3 other vehicles have brakes that last over 35,000 miles each! i'm upset over the cost but now i'm extremely concerned about the safety of this vehicle. diamler chrysler doesn't want to stand behind their product.
Steering wheel vibrates when braking at any speed.*ak
Rotors have warped 3 times in 16615 miles. presents safety issue when braking. *ak
Brakes have been repaired 2 times within the first 35 to 38 thousand miles and are shuddering violently when braking at highway speeds - seems to be a defect for this to happen three times with just 45 thousand miles on the vehicle. *ak
The brakes began pulsating and vibrating slightly and got worse. the consumer believes the brakes were made from poor material. *yh
I understand from an article in the florida times union today, april 10, 2002, that 200 complaints have been filed on behalf of the 1999 grand cherokee's. the issue is the faulty brake rotors placed on these vehicles and wanted to let you know that i encountered the same problem and thank god, i did not have a serious crash as i always travel with my two small children.*ak
While driving, front brake rotors became warped, had the problem repaired. one month later, the same problem occurred. problem has not been remedied. *ak *yd
Excessive wear of brake rotors, causing vehicle to vibrate when applying brakes. rotors were replaced four times, but problem is reoccurring. feel free provide any further information. *aki
While driving manifold gasket overheated, and brakes pulsated.*ak
While driving temperature gets hot, causing brakes to pulsate .*ak
Brake rotors are warped. require replacement. dealer and manufacturer refuse any responsibility. owner must pay for all repairs. warranty only 12,000mi.*ak
Rough vibration at all speeds when braking; rotors turned; 4000 miles later problem returned/recom. replace rotors & pads; manu.facturer will not repair after 1st year. *ak
Vehicle will start to vibrate real badly when applying brakes. problem will occur at any time at any speed. contacted dealer. *ak
While driving at any speed, there would be vibration in vehicle during activation of brake system. vibration would increase in severity at higher speeds. dealership examined vehicle and replaced brake rotors under warranty because rotors were warped. *ak
Steering column vibrates severly when attempting to apply brakes and traveling at speeds above 65 mph, dealership has examined vehicle, and has failed to remedy problem by replacing brake pads and rotors. *ak dealer recommended replacing rotors, which were warped, and also the brake pads, consumer refused, also left front and rear shock absorbers were leaking, which were replaced.*yd
Steering wheel and brake pedal when brakes was applied. i took vehicle to dealer for inspection and they determined that the brake pads were worn down and the rotors needed resurfacing. they said that the parts had a warranty for 12,000 miles. i feel that the brake pads and rotor were worn down prematurely due to defect in design of brake system. chrysler should redesign their rotors and recall the defective ones.please investigate this as it cost me $229.47 to repair.*ak
Brake rotors were warped, causing steering wheel to vibrate when driving. brakes would not stop vehicle properly. contacted dealer who stated that vehicle was not covered under warranty after 12500 miles. *ak *jb
My 200 jeep grand cherokee had brakes replaced twice under 30,000 miles. right now i am at 37,000 and looks like i will have visit the dealer again to have my brakes replaced, again. when asked about frre replacement the dealer answered that there is a technical srvice bulletin (tsb) out there regarding the issue, but i still have to pay for the replacement - no exceptions. here is information on two tsbs' (!) regarding the issue. 05-005-01a sep 01 brakes - roughness or pedal pulsation 05-003-02b dec 02 brakes - pulsation during light to moderate application
Rotors failed at 7k, 14k, and 27k. never had a car that needed brake work at 27k. suspect that brake system is undersized for vehicle. *ak
When traveling at 60 mph and applying brakes vehicle will shake when trying to slowdown. contacted dealer, and dealer solved problem. *ak consumer stated the dealer discovered the problem as bent rotors.*slc
Dt: consumer had to replace five individual brakes in five years. first was the front brakes and rotors, then it was the front brakes and rotors again about seven months later. then almost a year later, had them replaced again. a year after that had the rear brakes and rotors done. finally had the front brakes and rotors again. the mechanic told consumer that the rotors were warped, and that they could barely get them off of the car.*ak when i first noticed this, the brakes started to seem like they were not as effective as they should be. then, about a week later, the car will start to vibrate as i press the brake pedal, and the vibration starts in the brake pedal, and continue to vibrate until the whole car is shaking. it took a long time for the vehicle to crank. the dealer replaced the fuel pump o-ring and shims. *nm
Dt: brakes were a constant problem that began at 80,00 miles. rotors have been replaced every 8000 miles. dealer reported it was a wear and tear issue. vehicle was regularly serviced. brakes began showing a wearing problem. rotors become warped and w-wheel anti lock brakes becamee defective. happened while driving in all weather conditions. *ak
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 25 mph under normal road conditions, the brakes failed to work. the service dealer replaced the right and left rotors. the rotors were replaced every 12,000 miles. update 4/23/07 *tr
