We have classified the 33 complaints from 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC into the following categories.
Steering wheel shakes when braking from 50-60 mph speed. rotors are warped for the second time in 2 years. advised to replace front brakes and repair rotors. advised by technician at jeep dealership that numerous problems with this exact issue from 1999 to 2002 jeeps. definite safety issue as steering wheel will begin to shake uncontrollably. *nlm
My 2000 jeep grand cherokee has experienced braking failures on as a result of front rotor defects. on two occasions the front rotors were repaired by a jeep dealer. in the first instance, the rotors were excessively warped causing severe front end vibration that produced loss of steering and braking. in the second instance, and 15000 miles later, the condition reoccurred. in this second case, the dealer found the rotors to be warped again and replaced both the rotors and the calipers. although the dealer placed the blame on the driver, i have heard other year 2000 jeep grand cherokee owners complain of identical rotor failures. in both cases, the dealer service agent acknowledged the problem but would not take responsibility although offering a discounted repair cost.*ak
While driving and without warning the brakes failed and caused extended stopping distance. *nlm.*ak
Front brake calipers froze up and would not realease front brakes, had to be replaced when vehicle only had 43,000 miles. *ak
Vehicle has 43000 miles. when applying the brakes at speeds over 50mph front end shakes making the steering wheel shake almost uncontrolably. brought vehicle to the dealer who stated that they and the manufactorer were well aware of the problem and there was currently no recall. they stated that the front calipers were "catching too long and not releasing at the right time." dealer stated that there was no safety issue but that the calipers would need to be replaced as well as the rotars. they were unaware of wheter the extended warranty would cover the charges.
At approx. 30,000 miles the car began vibrating when brakes were applied; the dealer turned the rotors. at 58,500 miles, the car began shaking violently when the brakes were applied; now the dealer wants approx. $541 to repair. i have spent more on this jeep in 2 years than i have spent on my 93 cherokee in 11 years.
I have had the rotors resurfaced twice, and the rotors and calipers replaced once in 19000 miles. no that the warranty has run out, the dealer is very nasty about correcting the problem. if you ask me, any problems with brakes, steering, or fuel leaks are bound to end in casualties, if they haven't already. now wonder american car companies have to offer 0% apr, it's the only way you can sale a lemon. *nlm
Brake rotors always warping. had to replace with after market ones. *nlm
Brake rotors warped at less than 12,000 miles. local dealer turned rotors at a little over 12,000 miles. the severe vibration started again at approximately 24,000 miles . at 38000 miles i had front brake rotors and pads replaced by local independent garage. at highway speeds this is a bad problem you can barley hold steering wheel. *jb
I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee that requires new rotors every 18,000 miles or less. when the rotors start deteriorating the whole car shakes, shimmies and is difficult to control when the brakes are applied. this is dangerous and seems an unnecessary expense for the price of the vehicle. all jeep dealers will tell you their rotors are bad, but i don't see any consumer help or improvement provided by the dealers. they and chrysler corp. refuse to pay for this recurrent problem. *nlm
Continued failure of front disc brakes approx. every 8 or 9,000 miles. this is the third or fourth time the brakes have been looked at. *nlm
At about 30k miles started to have a shimmy from the front end when applying brakes. took to dealer and they advised brakes are 'wear' items and wouldn't correct. ended up buying 'upgraded' factory brake calipers for the front and aftermarket rotors to correct the problem. caw. *jb
Tl*- the contact owns a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. when the brake was depressed it will vibrte and shimmy. the road conditions were generally clear. the contact stated that while driving at more than 40 mph it became extremely difficult to stop the vehicle. the dealership initially replaced the brake pads and shaved the rotors. the dealership stated that this was normal behavior for the brake systems on all jeep vehicles. the vehicle currently had an odometer reading of 64000 miles. *ak
The front rotors were warped, which caused extended stopping distance. *jb
I own a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo. at ~20000 miles, when applying the brakes at speeds > 40 mph, the steering wheel violently shakes and shudders. car has occasionally drifted left, almost causing accidents due to problem. chrysler released an internal bulletin on this - no 05-003-02 rev b issued on dec 16,2002. well within the 3 yr, 36,000 mile warranty, the service department i used refused to honor any of the warranty provisions. upon further research, i found that this is a known defect, yet, neither nhtsa has initiated an investigation into it and chrysler has not sent notices out to customers. the problem is quite clear - the calipers are eating into the rotor and causing excessive wear and tear (conveniently called "warping" by chrysler). i suppose it will take a "death or two" before something happens on either end.*jb
I have had problems with the rotors on my 2000 jeep grand cherokee. at 20,000 miles they warped and the service department resurfaced them. at 30,000 miles, i had to have them replaced. at 47,000 miles, again resurfaced and at around 60,000 miles, again i had to replace them. this is not new to me. this is my fourth jeep , and have had similar results on all of the jeeps that i have owned. this is not just my experience, i know of many people, whom i work with and friends, that have the same problems that i have had. i believe this is cause by a few different reasons for this and unfortunately, it all comes back to cost for the car manufactures. they are making their rotors thinner, and of poorer quality materials. this means that they can not get rid of heat properly and therefore for warp. *nlm
The rear windshield wipers were defective. the rotors were replaced, there was a gap in the back door which caused the door locks not to work, the door had to be repainted and the steering wheel cover peeled. mr *ts *jb
We have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. the brakes are pulsating when used to slow at highway speeds. this issue is well know & recognized by the manufacturer as a design problem. this is creating hazardous driving by my wife & others with this vehicle. there should be a safety recall by the manufacturer. the only way to avoid problems is to replace the brake components. *nlm
I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo.i have had the rotors replaced four times in under one. i feel that this problem should be addressed by dc as a recall. i 've tried to get the tsb ( technical service bullitan) done for free being that this is an ongoing problem with thse vehichles and i was denied.*ak
front brake rotors. ph
I purchased my 2000 jeep grand cherokee in 2002. chryser purchased it back from the original owner due to a brake issue. the dealer assured me the problem was resolved. within six months the vehicle began to shake violently upon braking. the dealer resurfaced the rotors and it was okay for a few thousand miles, then began the severe shaking again. chrysler and the dealership have refused to provide a solution. we have since replaced the rotors by an independent mechanic and the problem has re-occured. i have since read numerous complaints on the internet about a bad design that continues to warp the rotors.
The brakes on my grand cherokee continue to pulsate after being replaced and resurfaced four times in less than two years. *jb
Problem: brakes when i am traveling approximately 50 mph, and i brake, the car vibrates. i believe that there must be a problem with the rotors. this has been going on for quite awhile, but recently, i learned that this is a problem with many jeeps. also, the mirrors (on the sides of the car) flip back and forth too easily. i had someone look at these, and i was told that the springs are gone. this seems to be shadily made, and there is no good reason why the mirrors should be flipping back and forth. *nm
Braking system on 2000 jeep grand cherokee.the brakes are warpping badly causing the abs to kick in in snow and ice before needed.the dealer in puyallup knows the exact problem claiming to fix it requires the calipers/ rotors to be upgraded to a 2003 model.the vehicle has 52,000 miles while the pads still have 50% left.this problem has become increasing worse to a point we no longer drive it to mountains. please advise .*ak
Continue to experience front brake rotor failure due to warpage. this has occurred every 6,000-8,000 miles. rotors and pads have been replaced 4 times with the calipers replaced the last time per tsb #0500302 dtd 5/02. they have now failed again even with the new calipers. the dealer has been great, however this is a design flaw with chrysler/jeep that needs a recall and a permanent fix. it is a safety issue as well as a time issue to have it fixed every 8,000 miles! chrysler refuses to provide an extedned warranty or any lasting solution to the problem. i think a class action law suit would be in order.
Rotors have had to be replaced every 7000 miles. when rotors become warped, it becomes almost undrivable. ts
The brakes started to shimmy and shake when applied at 16.000miles. took the jeep to the dealer were it was purchased and was told this was a common problem with this year of grand cherokee. they turned the rotors and now at 30,000 the problem is back.*ak
Sometimes the brakes in my vehicle does not respond when the pedal is depressed. *jb ****dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****769322
No failure yet severe rusting of brake line going to the rear axle. the rust is at the mounting clips is there any on going investigation on this issue? have photos available. dt
Front brake rotors have warped badly at 38,000 miles and again at 49,000 miles. dealer claims that problem is not covered by warranty. car has been driven a mix of city and highway miles. no off-road driving.
When brakes are applied, the vehicle and steering wheel vibrated. vibrations increased when attempting to stop quickly or from higher speeds. steering wheel shakes so hard now that it is difficult to control car. first started to notice problem just over 12,000 miles when warranty had expired. judging from other complaints as well as tsb bulletins, this is a common problem with jeeps. why isn't there a recall, or why doesn't chrysler replace rotors for free as this seems to be a design flaw? *jb
The front end of the vehicle shakes violently at speeds above 40 mph when brakes are applied. nlm
Brake line rusted thru, resulting in complete loss of brakes. line is rusted wherever a clip holds it to the chassis. other spots ready to rust through. mfg. refuses to pay for repair or consider the catastrophic safety issue this involves. claim it is due to elements.....whole line is not rusted through, only where clip holds it. car was driven normally, under same conditions others face, this could be a catastrophic failure causing death. certainly your brake line should not fail after 2.5 years with normal use. if the elements caused it, are the cars not supposed to be driven outside. could be a reaction between the clip and the line caused by salt, but there are a lot of people driving through salt in the winter. they may die.*ak
Front brake rotors/pads failed and replaced at 24,000 miles; original set replaced at 17,000 miles. clearly product/system defect exists. *nlm
While driving applied brakes and they didn't hold, pedal went all the way to the floor, resulting in vehicle running into a tree.*ak
While driving down the road at 40-50 mph, the vehicle started to shimmy and shake. when taking the vehicle to dealer, the dealer stated that all four rotors where warped. contacted dealer. *ak *scc
Rotors warped at 27,000 - dealership admitted this is a serious problem . vehicle shuddrers uncontrollably when braking hard. if the driver rarely brakes hard, he may not realize the extent of the problem until he forcefully applies the brakes. at that point, it is very easy to get into an accident. , . there are hundreds of postings with this problem - chrysler needs to do something to make jeep recall and fix the problems before someone is killed. this is a car that families buy because it has a good "safety record, but it has a serious defect.pac. *ak
Safety concern regarding 2000 jeep grand cherokee brake rotors.*mr while braking the entire vehicle would shake including the steering wheel and brake pedal. the consumer contacted the manufacturer but they provided no assistance since the vehicle was out of warranty. *nm
Brakes - rotors warp about every 9 to 12,000 miles. the rotors have been turned 3 times and are now in need again. transmission - the overdrive slips as it engages. tachometer shows the engine speed increasing as the od engages, than drops as it finally fully engages.
Consumer states there is vibration of the steering wheel when brakes are applied at 15 - 50 mph. as speed is increased, vibration is violent and steering uncontrollable. vehicle taken to authorized dealership, however, had scheduling problems. local lube service inspected front brakes and determined an uneven wear of the rotors casued the vibration. there is a service bulletin relating to this failure, however, manufacturer denies claim, stating that repairs were not made at authorized dealership. *tt
2000 jeep grand cherokee vin [xxx] at approximately. 15,000 miles: front brake rotors warped resulting in a severe shimmy/jerking of the front tires which resulted in pulling the car off the road. dealer said tough luck, expense included rotor repair and damaged front tires. now at 40,000 miles problem appears to be returning. based on previous recalls, talking to dealers, brake repair shops and reading many similar complaints on the internet as well as our local school van traveling with students having a wreck because of rotor failure, it is more than obvious that there is a known serious problem with inferior/unsafe brake rotors. like most americans, i have been exposed to stories of how the auto manufactures are knowingly willing to trade a few hundred lives to avoid the expense of recalls and building cars with safe components. it doesn't take a real bright person to know that when the steering and braking system on a car fails while traveling at normal speeds and in my case on treacherous mountain roads that serious accidents may and will result. my goal is to have this problem addressed by daimler chrysler and industry-wide before, not after, the body counts start adding up. i have been in contact with daimler chrysler and was basically told where to stick my concerns and complaint. any assistance will be appreciated by me and i suspect by other potential victims. sincerely, [xxx] . *nlm information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Brakes began to shake vehicle's front end violently when applied at speeds above 50 mph. i originally noticed problem at about 15,000 miles, but problem continued to worsen. brakes had to be replaced and rotors resurfaced at 19,000 miles on odometer. i have never replaced brakes on a car at 19,000 miles. dealership told me there was nothing they could do. after $190.00 dollar repair the car is back on the road till i guess the next brake repair at 35,000 miles. this defect in the braking system needs to be addressed by daimler/chrysler. someone will lose control of the vehicle and die. *ak
At 24,000 miles steering wheel shakes on braking. dealership service station states that fornt and rear rotors are warped. rear rotors needed to be resurfaced (for the second time; they were resurfaced at 9,000 miles the first time). the front calipers and rotors needed to be replaced (at 9,000 miles front rotors were resurfaced too). not under warranty. needed to pay $600.00 after 15% brake service coupon (figure this!). in my opinion, these rotors are a total design flaw and need to be covered under warranty during the time of factory warranty. service told me the replacement rotors are reinforced (figure this one too) which translates to me that chrysler is fully aware of their bad rotors in jeep gran cherokee (limited) vehicles. shame on them letting their loyal customers pay for something totally unnecessary. this definitely cries for a real bad customer satisfaction.*ak
Vehicle has had the rotors and calipers replaced on this vehicle. the vehicle has 21,000 miles and it was done under warranty. now the problem has reccurred and the vehicle is no longer under warranty. *jb *sc
Consumer complained that the rotors wore out prematurely. at 60,000 miles dealer replaced the rotors. at 82,000 miles the front rotors need to be replaced again. also, rotors had to be turned on several occasions within the above mileages. dealer was aware of this problem. *ak
Rotors fail without warning, have been replaced four times since purchase of vehicle
