We have classified the 25 complaints from 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee about VISIBILITY into the following categories.
Hvac doesn't change temperature. blender doors are broken. found out it's a common problem in 99-04 jeep grand cherokees and they've updated the parts to replace. problem is, labor costs around $1500 to fix the hvac. there should be a recall for this as i can't drive in the winter without heat, won't be able to see while driving without a defroster!!! *tr
We have owned our 1999 grand cherokee since 1999 - its been a great car but every single issue listed on this website has befallen us. currently @ 149k miles we have no heat on the driver side due to blend door assembly, the airbag light goes off all the time and there is no heat in the drivers side seat. i am shocked that so many people have the exact same issues and that to me says there is truly something wrong. we also took part in a class action suit that covered some of the expenses we had in continually replacing the brakes - especially the rotors which warp with out notice and can do that if you just step on the brakes to hard! even if you have just had them replaced. cheap parts? i am a die hard jeep owner but after reading all of these postings i am wondering if my alliance should be elsewhere? *tr
The blower to the heater and air conditioning went out. i have had it replaced 2 times in less than 3 years. now its out again. it's difficult to drive in winter with no blower to a heater and difficult in summer with no blower to the air conditioning. a mechanic i went to said he has seen multiple jeeps with this same issue. he believes it may be the cable wires due to the nearness to the engine and they were not big enough to handle the heat. is this true? he also thought jeep was aware of this issue. if so, how do i get this fixed so it works properly and not go out every year? every once in a "blue moon" the blower will come on for a couple seconds but will not stay on. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the blender that controlled the vehicle from running too hot or cold failed. the contact stated that the passenger side blower would expel cold air and the driver side blower would expel very little heat. the defroster was also inoperable. the dealer advised the contact that the entire dashboard and steering column would have to be removed in order to make the necessary repairs. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure and current mileage was 160,000.
Visibility: defroster/defogger system. windshield blower. cold air out the passenger side and visibility is decreased. i have had this fixed once when i bought the jeep 6 years ago. *tr
Tl* the contact owns 1997 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the fan in the ventilation system failed to run at a high speed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician stated that a blower motor resister needed to be replaced. however, the part needed was no longer manufactured. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 95,000.
Visibility:defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower ... it was suggested that include the prior description but i'm in question. we have had this 1999 jeep grand cherokee in the family for years and the past year the passenger side blows strictly cold air (it has dual air controls) - my nephew owned the jeep prior to our purchasing it from him this past month. he said this has been this way for a while and not sure what to do. in researching the fix, it seems everyone has the same problem and it was suggested to report it to you in hopes that you can help with the fix as it is a costly one from jeep ($1000 - $1500) ... since everyone has this problem it has to be a jeep defect. hopefully you can help us out. *tr
Heater a/c for 1999 jeep grand cherokee... failure to operate, ridiculous to repair. makes driving in cold climates impossible, due to window fogging and ice buildup. daimler chrysler should recall and repair all jeeps from 1999-2004 who are all known to have this problem. they should not be allowed to disregard the customer complaints, with regards to this. this was repeated year after year, with no easy solution for customers to repair. an excessively costly and not guaranteed procedure which could create more problems, even when professionally repaired, this is a safety hazard for those who must drive in cold climates. *tr
When i turned on the heat one fall day i got hot air on the driver side and cold air on the passenger side. it doesn't matter whether i select defrost, floor, or mid-level vents.also i had the temperature settings on high. i have not repaired this yet, it is a safety issue due to difficulty defrosting the windshield. the dealership said it will be very costly. it is not intermittent because it is always failed. *tr
the blend doors on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited have broken giving me no heat during the winter. i cannot afford to fix the problem as i do not have $1200.00 for fix it. this is a travesty and an indication of just why the american big three are in so much trouble. this vehicle is the worst vehicle that i have personally ever owned. *tr
My 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited w/42,000 miles. yes . not a typo . 42,000, orignal owner & "scared to death" to drive this suv. i have alot of the already problems, that have been reported. had to pay many, w/my own cash. this suv schould have came in 1 color "lemon yellow". it is an accident watng to happen. the recent problem is now i have no a/c-heat or defroster. ths is due, to failure of the automatic temp control to work. i t started 1st by intermittently working, till now not working at all, this is just 1 more, to the list , of many other problems. i don't think that it is an coincidence that all my issue have happenned, almost exactly, in the order, of all the other complaints. i can't undestand how a company can get away w/this. this new problem can cost up to $2000, if it is, like previous reported problems, happens to be the "blend doors". as a handicapped driver i drive less than 4,000 miles a year. this is the only auto i drive, thus the many, many probs have yet to raise thier head. i have read almost all complaints(too many to read) this suv schould be a "total recall, i have never heard more complaints & problems, in my life, for any automobile. this suv schould be studied & reseached, on "how not to build an automobile. just read the many complaints here & on the internet. we are not making this stuff up. i don't know how they stayed in business as long as they did. we, the taxpayers, bailed them out. who is bailing out all the owners, of this "death-trap"? if that is not absurd enuff, many problems could have been repaired, by jeep & still can. what is the purpose, of nhsta, if not to intervene? you have all the complaints. hundreds of them. you have them posted, yet, we taxpayers/owners safety, has been at risk ever since this suv was driven out of the showroom. how did you not make a recall on the rotor/brakes issue which was reported at 3,000 miles? i am so frustrated. is braking problems not a safety issue? please, help us! *tr
Visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower. *tr
The climate automatic climate control system has failed. one side blows cold air and the other warm air. the defrosters are ineffective, making it difficult to see when the windshield fogs up not to mention keeping the windshield deiced in bad driving conditions. chrysler says the instrument panel must be removed in order to remove the heater assembly and fix the recirculation door and other components. they want $1200 to fix the heater! this is unbelievable! *tr
1999 jeep grand cherokee has cold air blowing out on the drivers side and dash board but has hot air blowing out on passenger floor side. i cannot defrost my windshield and this has caused me to pullover while driving du to loss of visibility. i performed various test and found that when testing the azc the fault codes i get are 47 = left temperature door not responding and 54 = left temperature door travel too large. after reviewing several sites and talking with a few mechanics it seems to be that the blend doors are broken. i cannot believe how many failures about this i have read and there is no resolution. this is something that is a safety hazard especially here in the northeast. i am also a firefighter and in the middle of the night when i am called to a fire, accident with someone trapped, or some other emergency, i expect my vehicle to work properly and at the least provide heat to defrost for visibility. i cannot understand why this has not been addressed and why it is not considered a serious failure. in these times of poor economy you would expect corporations to treat loyal jeep owners with consideration and address their issues. i would like an answer as to why this has not been addressed and what is required to repair it. i am also sick to hear that dealers are charging over $1000 to fix a design flaw. i would hope you consider this an important issue because i consider my defroster important when i respond to rescue someone out of a burning building or cut them out of a tangled vehicle. time and life is of the essence to save and i don't need to worry about not being able to get heat to defrost my vehicle. thank you . *tr
In just the last month we have lost heat completely in our jeep. it start blowing out cold air on the driver side and now is blowing cold air on the driver side and passenger side as well as the defrosting vents all the time. we have no heat at all. we have not tried to repair it yet as it going to be costly. *tr
I own a 99 jeep grand cherokee limited, and as i have come to find out my problem is all too common. in the middle of a freezing nebraska winter the heat stopped working! not only is did my heater core go out, the apparently the "blend door" is also not functioning correctly. the combination of problems is likely to cost well over a thousand dollars to fix! after researching and finding out how common this problem is . . .i've decided i'll never buy a jeep again! the of people this is happening to is unacceptable and something needs to happen otherwise i would advice every jeep owner to get rid of their car before 75,00 miles. the problem can become dangerous because the defrost/defog function is completely gone when this happens, reducing or eliminating visibility. *tr
Blend door failure. *tr
The heating, air conditioning and defrost ventilation system has a systematic progressive failure. the blend doors started to fail interfering with the ac and defrost and heat on the passenger side. now i have total failure and electrical short that interferes with the speedometer and it was difficult to start and idle, i'm lucky to have gotten home. *tr
Heat and air worked fine. in october on a cold night i decided to use my heat and it blew cold air! this happens everytime i go to use my heat. it doesn't matter which vent it is blowing from the heat comes out cold. has not fixed yet due to repair costs equaling over $1000.00 and i cannot afford that at the time. guess i will just have to drive around in -8 temperatures with ice on the inside of my windshield..thanks jeep *tr
My 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited's heater control unit has become faulty. the heat does not work on any setting, and outside cold air comes into the cabin with zero control. this is making visibility very poor due to lack of defrosting the front windshield. i brought it to the dealer, and they informed me that it was due to a poor "design" from the factory. they told me that it was going to cost $1,766.00 plus tax to repair this problem. i feel that there should be a recall issued to fix this problem seeing it becomes a safety risk due to poor visibility. *tr
I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited. it has the self diagnostic tool build into the dual zone temperature control. i used the diagnostic tool to evaluate the problems that i was having with my heating and cooling unit of the cabin and got numerous error codes. i have approximately 81,000 miles currently. the major issue that i am having is that i cannot get my unit to blow hot or cold air into the cabin although it will turn on. i took my vehicle into the local daimler chrysler dealership and they charged me a price for fixing this issue which at the time i thought was fair. this last dealership repair was about 3,000 miles ago. after the repair the vehicles heating and cooling unit operated properly until recently. now the system does not operate properly anymore and will turn on but will not blow out any air at all...ever. i have contacted the dealership to find out what the issue is and they stated that they have had a lot of vehicles that have this exact issues and need to replace the original equipment again. after looking online i found a forum on jeepsunlimited.com that has about 25 pages of people with the same complaint. at this time i am in agreement that this is an issue that is related to the original design from daimler chrysler company and needs to be either addressed as a recall or as a lawsuit from the public that has been sold these vehicles. this repair cost me over $800 last time i took it to the dealership and was not even something that could be fixed due to other errors on behalf of daimler chrysler's original design. i am incredibly frustrated and do not know what else to do since repairs of $1,000 every 3,000 miles is out of the question and i am simply driving around with out heat, snow falling, and a pregnant wife! if something happens i will sue. the original parts are not available for review. please contact me if there are any questions and i look forward to some type of resolution to this issue. thank you. *tr
I noticed that my air flow through the a/c and heater was not working - no air flow. it seems permanent - no air flow. i can hear the fan, but no flow of air - no matter what setting (defrost, floor, front side). what is worse, when my windshield fogs up, i have no visibility due to no windshield blower flow. i have not fixed it since it seems to be a widespread problem inherent with the jeep design, and i believe jeep should fix it. *tr
Heater blend door failure heater core failure a/c evap failure. *tr
Visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower -on a 1999-2004 jeep grand cherokees. *tr
I have a 99 grand cherokee and all of a sudden one day last march. the passenger side air started to blow out cold air and the driver side was blowing out cold. the temperature was both on 80. now this winter. you can not get the heat to switch from the front vents to the floor or defrost. *tr
Failure of climate control system - vents get "stuck" in the wrong position so that system heats in the summer or will not heat in the winter. vents that air comes out of is not controllable with normal knob positions. may only affect one side of car or may affect both. random behavior over many months. *tr
Blend doors on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee failed, making it impossible to see in most weather (instant fogged windshield w/no way to defog) and blowing cold air instead of hot. this cost over $1000 to fix, as removal and replacement of the doors is very time-consuming (whole dash must be removed). *tr
Blows cold air and or don't blow. *tr
99 jeep grand cherokee hvac system failure. blend doors allow ac to be on when the heat is on allowing the windshield to freeze/fog in the winter and fall. the dealer and chrysler knows there is a flaw with all of these cars. makes for very unsafe driving half of the year if you can't see out the windshield. *tr
I have a jeep grand cherokee ltd 1999 with no heat or defrost in driver side was told by dealer it would cost between 1200 and 1500 to fix i am out of extended warranty but i feel this is a safety concern to to defroster not working i know i am not alone with this problem please help!!!!!!!!!!!! *tr
I ran into what i thought was a simple heating problem with my 1999 grand cherokee. one day while driving down the road, my car simply stopped blowing hot air. after going to the dealership and spending nearly $600 to have some sort of solenoid replaced, i realize after pulling out of the lot that only my passenger side will blow hot air. i called the dealership back, and they told me that it was a problem with the blend doors, and will likely cost between $1,000 and $1,500 to fix. the repair requires a complete disassembly of the dash and steering column (around 10-12 hours for a full repair, according to the shop). i began to look around online to see what else could be done. to my surprise, nearly every jeep message board was flooded with posts about this exact problem. the engineering of the part virtually ensures that it will fail; the calibration phase (every 20 or so start-ups) forces the plastic part to its limits and eventually breaks. every dealership or auto repair shop that i contacted said that virtually every 1999 and newer grand cherokee has, or will have, this problem. the issue isn't paying for car repair; every car has problems that we as consumers will need pay to get fixed. the problem is that the engineering of this part causes it to fail, and now i'm stuck not being able to defrost my windshield in the winter, or now in springtime when it rains. there is no doubt in my mind that this has already, or will cause in the future, accidents from people not being able to see. many people, including myself, would rather drive down the road while wiping the windshield with a rag... than pay $1,500 to get it fixed. for many people, spending that $1,500 isn't even an option. *tr
Loss of heat/ac. *tr
Driver-side window fell into door and will not roll up. upon research online, hundreds if not thousands of other people have had this same problem with faulty parts within the window mechanism. have not done any work or replacement yet. *tr
My a/c system on blows cold air, no heat due to blend air door no functioning correctly. also my defroster will not clear my windshield. *tr
Heating blend doors 1999 jeep grand cherokee second failure. *tr
I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited. the blend door is bad and i have no defrost or heat on the driver side of the jeep only cold air. *tr
I have a '99 jeep grand cherokee ltd. the dual climate control only blows cold air on the drivers side regardless of the temp setting. dealer says it is very common air-blend actuator/door problem and will cost $$$ to fix. *tr
Windshield visibility problem caused by defective blend door on zone control for heater, causing unsafe visibility issue in inclement weather. *tr
I have a jeep grand cherokee. the heating unit has failed. it only blows cold air. i went online to check if it was something that i could fix myself because i called two dealers and they all want to charge $1200 or more to fix it. to my surprise, i found several forums and user groups online whereby people have complained of the same failure in their jeep cherokees from year 99-04 models. what they all describe is the exact same problem and experience we had with our jeep. first the passenger side goes out and only blows cold....then a few weeks later, the driver side does the same thing. i can not imagine why a recall has not been issued on this. the manufacturer acts as if this is not a problem. i would challenge someone to go back and look at how many of these have had to be replaced in those model years. it will be a shocking number. *tr
My 1999 grand jeep cherokee has the same most common problem of owners who own jeeps from 1999-2004. the heater system blows cold air. daimler/chrysler is aware of the defect but will not cover the expensive cost to fix it. instead they had handed over the cost to us. *tr
Automatic climate control temperature control blend doors broke, leaving me without defrost. the windshield was icing up on the driver's side while driving in sleet. *tr
Hvac system that breaks on everyone and its not a recall. *jb
There is no heat from my passenger side in my 1999 jeep cherokee. i took it to the dealer it is the blend door very expensive to fix over $1200.00. i called jeep and they know that there are problems but said they have not been told to recall. this is a safety issue the window fogs up and you can not see while driving! *tr
The "blower control module" is the electronic component responsible for adjusting the fan speed for the hvac on vehicles equipped with the automatic climate control. it is a well known problem that these units fail. it has failed on my vehicle. my own independent mechanic has replaced quite a few of them. the wiring harness and plug that supplies power is not heavy duty enough and it overheats and melts and could cause a fire. it can be further exaggerated if the blower collects debris and draws more current. once it fails the blower will no longer operate. this makes the defroster unavailable, which could create very unsafe driving conditions should the windows fog up. chrysler has a redesigned unit with a new harness so it is obviously a problem they are already aware of. i'm in the process of having the new parts installed and the old parts will be available. here's a write up of how to fix it yourself. http://www.wjjeeps.com/blower_motor.htm *jb
1999 wj grand cherokee limited- blend door problem. i had the bled door problem fixed on my jeep fixed about 40k miles ago. this issue has cropped up again. i travel to the mountains on the weekends and external temp usually get below freezing. last weekend the blend door problem came up suddenly. there is no heat on the drivers side and the windshield defrost functions . due to the windshield being fogged up, i almost drove over the cliff avoiding oncoming traffic. please consider this lack of heat as a safety issue. *jb
1999 jeep grand cherokee limited has a safety defect in the ac/heater system. blending doors mechanism controlling the defogging of the windshield break too easy. replaced once about a year ago and then it has the same problem again. too expensive. when it rains almost got into an accident because of the defogging system failure. *tr

Hvac blend door frequently does not operate correctly causing visible issues with the windshield defroster/defogger. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 40 mph, the window became fogged. the heat would not activate to defog the window, therefore the contact's visibility was limited. the dealer stated that the failure was caused by the blend doors. the failure mileage was 100,000 and current mileage was 115,000.
Visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower dashboard have a loud creaking sound coming from its underside when you turn on your ventilation. there is a creaking from the dash seconds after shutting the engine off, numbers popping-up on your climate control display. hot air blowing from one side of the dash even when you have the heat turned on. your ventilation system may have failed, or, may be in the process of failing. dealer wants 1200 to 1500 for the fix. *tr
