We have classified the 38 complaints from 2017 Jeep Compass about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
When putting the car in reverse it would go straight untill it kicked back in gear. on highway gear switched on its own slowed down and kicked back in. i could of got in s major accident. i just brought the car on 01/17/2020
Car stalled 4 times in the last 4 months while at stop lights. i was stopped at light and when i went to move again the car stalled-all panel lights flashed and car would not turn on again. after multiple attempts the car finally started. after the most recent occurrence i drove immediately to the nearest midas because oi was afraid to drive it any farther. they ran diagnostics and could not find a definitive answer. the battery was fine.
Car will not start. starts and then shuts off. not battery related.
My 2019 jeep compass has had numerous safety concerns, especially related to the engine and the push-to-start feature. most recently, i have been in (d) drive, both stationary (i.e at a red light) or in motion (i.e highway, main road, side street, rotary) and both on a city street and highway when the vehicle's dashboard alerts me to shift the car into the (p) park gear. i can feel the car start to decelerate when it send this message. first, i shift the car into the desired gear (p), then brake locks itself so that i am unable to use to push-to-start feature and place the car back into drive. this has happened to me 4x/more. i have had my car in the service center at the dealership twice for the issue and they are unable to find the actual problem. it seems to me that it is the engine/push-to-start feature. in 2017 i had a defective battery and the car acted very similar, so i am thinking it may be the battery again. i filed a claim/case with jeep today. i am awaiting proper documentation from the service center in terms of invoices. my life is at risk due to this huge safety issue.
I bought my car in 2018 brand new with less than 10 miles. in the first few months, it required a brand new radio system and rear camera replacement. in some months following that, i have had my car stop on me while driving, approximately 4-5 times with only excuses as to why the car would unsafely do this. first time was an update that needed to be done. second time was the keyfob battery but accused it of being lack of oil changes (i don't need to go to the dealership for oil changes). next, was no explanation at all. last was yesterday when it died twice in one day in the middle of the road. they called to let me know that it probably is because my oil is 3/4 way depleted even though i had an oil change done less than 3k miles ago. their suggestion is that i return every 500 miles so they can top me off if the oil seems to be an issue. these are thankfully in less busy streets mostly driving straight but once while turning. once included an error code that i was told was an electrical system error but it didnt register. i have pictures and videos on my phone from the incidents. i have also written to the ceo of jeep, attorney general and will be contacting an attorney from an article i found on this issue from april of 2019. my photos and videos will not send and upload.
I had a safety issue with my 2017 jeep compass that i am currently leasing. the car would stop and shut down on its own without warning or any lights turning on. it had to do with the parking brake as well. when i brought it to the north haven, ct dealership to get fixed, they said they were unable to fix it and had to contact chrysler. chrysler told them what to do. the dealership did as told and it resolved the issue--something about the battery. when i was informed about what happened, i asked why there was no warning or check engine light going off alerting me that something was not right. the person at the dealership said 'well once you notice things aren't working well, then it's probably a battery issue. bring it back in.' how is this acceptable? there is no warning that my car is going to just stop as i am driving. i just have to wait until other things go wrong to determine if it is maybe a battery issue? that is unheard of. the dealership had my car for almost a week, did not give me a loaner, but said i could rent a car at a low cost. rent a car? i am not going to pay money for a car when mine is still under warranty. and when asked if there was a recall regarding this issue, the person at the dealership said 'no, they only do recalls when it is a safety issue.' so when my jeep automatically shut down on a road with a speed limit of 55, that's not a safety issue? i am completely unsatisfied with my experience resolving this issue, and to be honest, i cannot say that it is resolved because there will be no warning as to whether or not it is going to happen again. the product is not safe apparently because there is no indication as to when the battery needed to be serviced. when i went to the dealership and requested safer car, the manager said they could not do anything, accepting the fact that i drive an unsafe car.
Uconnect display has frozen on multiple occasions for extended period of time. turning car off then back on only resolved the situation half of the time, hard restarts required the other times. after 4th freezing, dealer finally replaced entire uconnect system.
Start/stop system stopped working and then burned out regular battery, preventing car from starting. system continues to operate intermittently, stopping the car when its not fully warmed up and other times not stopping the car when the car is fully warmed up.
Vehicle has been in the shop four times. all have been control module related. we lose all exterior lights. vehicle will randomly shut off while in drive. now we are having an issue with the vehicle not accelerating and is idling rough. all of these happened while the vehicle was in motion. this has been over a span of the past year.
Since i've had my car the main screen with maps, weather, radio, etc. has shut off randomly, my speakers have turned up to the max they could go all by themselves without letting me turn anything off, the weather constantly pops up after i've cleared it. all of this was fixed with replacing the whole screen. but then after the system would not save my setting for the first 5 times i started it back up. i had to keep saving them. it has had multiple issues, i've had to get different tires replaced at least 3-4 times and air leaks, the last being because the belt broke in them. i have an appointment to get my front usb replaced because it randomly stopped working. i've had to get other parts replaced that control my driving and now it won't start. the lights, radio, gauges, etc. all work but the gauges make a tick sound but the engine won't start. there has been two times that it says my car is running but the engine isn't on. i've had my side lights that come on when i turn randomly not work but i'm not sure if that is something i'm doing. i have to read the manual more.
My 2017 jeep compass is very faulty and has been in the dealership maintenance area for the same issue multiple times. i have attached supporting documentation of the three different times in the shop for the same/similar issues. the following concerns are included in this documentation: (1) the vehicle turned off while in motion driving on a city street, the parking break engaged and prevented the vehicle from moving further in the middle of the city street. (2) the vehicle refused to start when parked in a garage. once pressing the start button multiple times, the vehicle started and multiple service lights came on, including "service esp" and "service 4wd". this has happened multiple times over the life of owning the vehicle (only 23 months and about 18,000 miles). i have included two service records (the first time and most recent time it was taken to the dealership), i do not have the third record with me as the vehicle is in for maintenance currently and the other invoice is in the vehicle, however you can see record of the second visit in the record from 4/9/2019. i am concerned for my safety and the safety of other drivers given my history with my vehicle and hope to get this permanently fixed instead of putting a band aid on it as the dealership has done. *dt*jb
The vehicle was stopped at a stoplight on a city expressway and when the light turned green the stop/start system failed to restart the engine. it engaged the parking brake in the middle of the road and would not allow me to immediately restart the car. after several attempts to restart the car with traffic flying by me i was finally able to restart the car and disengage the parking break. this has happened multiple times and my dealership says they will not fix it because they are waiting to receive a stop start battery from mopar. it has been on backorder for a month and they dont have a date when it will be fixed. this keeps happening at least once a week and they do nothing to correct the problem. the problem is with the start/stop system made to conserve gas. the system should not leave you stranded in the middle of busy roads where someone can slam into the back of you.
After coming to complete stop, car engine shuts off due to start/stop system. when releasing break car cannot start back up, all lights turn on, emergency break is automatically enabled and stalls. i have to put the car in park, turn off (even though engine is not running) and turn back on and remove the emergency break before i can accelerate. this has happened on busy intersections and is a big safety hazard. i have taken vehicle to dealership and they stated the battery was bad. battery was replaced but the issue is now more frequent.

Takata recall, bought the car in april 2018 and after 2 months i started experiencing a strange kick coming from the engine while driving, i took it numerous times to the jeep dealership and could never find the problem until 7 months later when it statted to do it kore often. after some research and talking to other jeep owners with the same car i found out it was a manufacturer defect. unfortunately, by the time the dealership realized it was a defect, my warranty had expired. 2 days ago, my car completely went out and didn't turn on, i had to tow it to the dealership and now i am being charged over two-thousand dollars to get an electrical problem fixed. on too of making my monthly payments, i have to pay out of pocket for a lemon vehicle i purchased.
Tl* the contact owns a 2017 jeep compass. while driving approximately 10 mph, the vehicle stalled and several warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was towed to south oak jeep, dodge, chrysler, and ram (4550 w lincoln hwy, matteson, il 60443, 708-747-7950) where it was diagnosed that the computer needed to be updated. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the warranty had expired. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
Purchased dec 2017. almost immediately began experiencing a problem whenever the speedometer dropped to 31 mph, there was an aggressive downshift that felt as if i was being rear ended. problem frequent yet intermittent. often radio would not turn on or off when the engine was on or off. fear of battery draining was often. loss of volume control when vehicle was parked.. each month, random errors would flash. by july 3, it had become so frequent withshifting problems and problems with lighting, windows, sunroof, it was taken to collierville cdjr for service. that day all the codes started flashing across dash while vehicle was in motion on highway. there were 4 pages of diagnostic error codes. tech erik jeter said a tcm flash update was available for transmission shift quality. must update pcm and tcm also. there were multiple dtcs for all turn signals and lamps. determined cause to be faulty body control module and internal failure. this was allegedly replaced, despite being originally told of a recall and backorder of parts that could last 6 months. car out of service for 10 days. problems began again within a week of vehicles return. it was taken to landers cdjr for service on august 9, 2018. i have not heard back from dealer. then the backup cameras began freezing and would stay while car in motion. windows stopped working. on september 1, 2018 my vehicle was found to be sitting behind the service department along side more than a dozen other new jeep compass vehicles with stop sale/do not sell written across windows. it has been a total of 35 days out of service. this vehicle needs to be declared a lemon so i can replace it with a working car.
Takata recall: burning plastic smell while in motion. found burn hole in the passenger side leather seat.
Tl* the contact owns a 2017 jeep compass. while driving between 25-30 mph, the emergency brake indicator illuminated. the contact stated that all the instrument panel indicators illuminated and she was instructed to park and restart the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to sansone chrysler jeep dodge (90-100 us-1, avenel, nj 07001), but the failure could not be duplicated. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 10,000. the vin was not provided.
The vehicle has been in motion every occurrence and happened on a highway. the jeep has shut off while i was driving. i had the automatic off turned off and when i stopped at a stop light the jeep powered down, dash and lights went crazy, and my jeep would not start back up. it took over 5 minutes to get the jeep to come back on. there is also a popping noise and a very hard shift at times. when this hard shift occurs it pulls my jeep to the right, i have had it in the shop several times this year and they cannot figure out the problem. they thought changing my shocks would help but it has not. there is still a popping sound when i hit a certain speed and then it is still shifting extremely hard randomly and jerks the whole jeep when it happens. it has almost caused me to wreck a couple times especially when i am in a right handed curve and this occurs; it caused me to go off road when i took a right handed curve and it occurred. this has been happening since april 2018, and i have had it in the shop several times. this has been an ongoing thing now i do not have the files with me today at work, but i do have them at home. i can upload the documentation at a later date. unsure of exact date.
Uconnect display has frozen on multiple occasions for extended period of time. turning car off then back on only resolved the situation half of the time, hard restarts required the other times.

02/05/2018......bought the vehicle november 2017. twice already while driving on the highway through rush hour traffic the dash display started flashing erratically and the car lost all power, a total shut down. no radio, no dash, no brakes, no steering. luckily traffic was moving each time. after approximately a city block the car restarts. dealer tested the car and could not replicate the problem after driving it 20 miles with a computer connected. i feel this can be life threatening and should be investigated before the inevitable happens. i have 2 small children and my wife with me most of the time. they recommend driving it to see if it happens again. i'm no longer comfortable driving this vehicle.
On 1/12/18 my vehicle would not start so i called for a tow to take to the dealership auto center they said it was a wire that was burnt that connects to the steering. received it a couple days later the next day it would not start after 5 hours of waiting on a tow it started up and i drove it straight to the dealership. when they called the module was going out it got replaced and i was able to get the car back. the next day the car would not start again i kept playing with the ignition back and forth to see would it start nothing. again requested a tow none came. by the time i was leaving for work i tried again it started i took it back to the dealership. they kept it for a few days and nothing was coming up on the machine. i drove it for a week or so and on 2/6/18 the vehicle would not start up after i had just got out of it from running errands and a few occasions i felt the steering wheel tighten and was hard to turn. those times i was parked on parked on the streets but on feb 6 i parked a few inches by the fire hydrant ran into the house to take the groceries and come out to move the vehicle it would not start. on all occasions it was not any lights on the dashboard and everything was work except the ignition would not start. *bf *tr
Issue related to recall t70 continues after update and testing. dash will properly dim if the car is turned on at night. however, if the car is on and i open my door, temporarily turn on cabin lights, or drive temporarily in bright environment (eg. tunnel), my dash will become bright and stay bright. this has already been identified as violation of federal safety regulations with recall t70 or 17v-740
Tl* the contact owns a 2017 jeep compass. while exiting the highway at 45 mph, the vehicle lost electrical power and the headlights dimmed. the contact pulled the vehicle over and the electricity automatically returned. the vehicle was taken to the dealer (suburban chrysler dodge jeep, 32850 ford rd, garden city, mi 48135), but the failure could not be duplicated. the manufacturer was notified and confirmed what the dealer stated. there were no recalls associated with the vehicle. the failure mileage was 8,000.
My car is having the exact issue described by investigation/recall 17v740000. however, i am not included in the recall. potentially the recall is not including all affected cars.
Engine has excessive oil consumption which causes the vehicle to just stall out. recommended 5000 oil changes but dealers will say 3000 and to check oil every 2 days because it may need 4-5 qts between oil changes. this started within 5 months of driving it off the showroom floor. dealer and chrysler corp are aware of issues but no fix has been discovered not do they care. my daughter and her 2 babies were almost killed when it just stalled exiting a major freeway and an 18 wheeler right behind her...case manager (3rd case since 2017) at fca was 'oh, so scary'. this is a serious, deadly issue and dealers omit things from the system, perform the consumption tests improperly or don't record them at all so they will not have to do what's right. the vehicle will totally shut down while turning, emergency brake will apply and it takes a bit to get it started again. sometimes lights on dash will all flash on or sometimes just the oil light (even within 2 weeks of an oil change).
Tl* the contact owns a 2017 jeep compass. while driving between 20-25 mph, the emergency brake erroneously self activated abruptly and stopped the vehicle. in addition, the electrical system malfunctioned and caused the instrument gauges to stop operating and the interior lighting remained illuminated. the vehicle was taken to putnam jeep/chrysler in burlingame, ca who indicated that the failures were due to a computer software update issue. the computer software was updated, but the failures continued. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 400.
I purchased my 2017 jeep compass trail hawk brand new, my production date is april 26, 2017. i have had endless issues w/ this vehicle, i have owned other jeeps and never had these issues. it started w/ my radio making this crazy indescribably loud sound along w/ freezing the screen. turning off the radio would not stop the sound, not even turning off the entire vehicle would stop the sound. serv dept could never replicate, i brought it in one time when radio was on a non-existent phone call and acting up. they took my car and turned it off, next day told me they couldn't replicate. i demanded that the girl who took my car in and saw what was going on speak with the tech to explain what she saw. they agreed to order me a new radio. additionally i began having issues w/ jeep throwing on random dash indicator lights and not starting. tcm pin was spreading and causing indicators b battery controlling stop/start tested bad. they replaced. i had already replaced my a battery a day or so before. damage wires found at fuse box (they blamed me) i have made zero mods to car or even lifted the hood myself. bcm replaced. i had issue w/ engine cutting off while driving in road & pulling ebrake before i'm due for oil change. had oil consumption test done and they say it's fine, this is because chrysler makes up the consumption standard. so you will always be "fine." this it to prevent you from getting to compression test. i go in many times for this same issue. eventually, i demand with fca that they allow compression test and replace my engine when they discover it's due to oil consump. tech reports oil low, sprk plug cyl 3 is oil fouled, compress. test done air is felt from oil fill, bore scope of cyl 3 walls are scored and have oil on them. fca approves new engine for me. after new eng. i drive 13 mi eng is over heating. t-stat clamp replaced. do not give up & document well!
1. mileage 214 - driving car on city street, screen system went out - heat, back up camera, radio, etc. 2. mileage 887 - driving car - in drive, but just barely so because had backed out of parking spot and was only a few feet from where put into drive - car suddenly lurches and stops. towed to dealer. found "rubbed through wiring" in transmission harness. 3. mileage 1632 - same as problem 1. found to be internal defect, replaced radio/telematics gateway module. 4. mileage 3329 - driving in stop and go traffic in city on a city street (not highway), stop in line of traffic. auto/start/stop engages to stop engine. when foot lifted from brake, car won't start back up. error code for stop/start. turn car completely off and on, engine turns over, but error code remains. in shop for this now.
2017 jeep compass. consumer writes in regards to brakes locking up while driving. *as the consumer stated the vehicle experienced various electrical issues including the back up camera remaining on at all times, the locks were inoperable, the vehicle would not operate while the key fob in the vehicle, the vehicle would start and shut off with the radio still on and can shift, but not move, and the vehicle would randomly not communicate with the key fob. also, the emergency brake automatically turned off, there was hesitation in the shifting, and the vehicle would inadvertently brake while reversing or driving forward. *js
Jeep is brand new, has 1700 miles on it. without warning, heat turns on full speed out the vents, can not turn off, turn signals do not work, rear camera and park assist disabled, 4 wheel drive inoperable, instrument cluster inoperable, radio inoperable. out door temperature reads 3 dashes. hazard lights inoperable. odometer flashing. problem will go away for 30 seconds, than comes right back. check engine light on, blower fan and blend door codes. this happens while vehicle is in motion. regardless of when and where. odor of burning electrical/wires came out of vents.
Tl* the contact leased a 2017 jeep compass. the contact stated that the steering wheel made an abnormal clicking noise. the steering wheel was replaced; however, the failure continued with the steering wheel being structurally unsound. in addition, the fuel gauge failed to provide a proper reading. the gauge indicated that it was empty when there was fuel in the fuel tank and vice versa. the vehicle was not repaired after it was taken back and forth to manhattan jeep (629 w 54th st, new york, ny 10019, 1-(877) 225-8709). the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 10.
Car shuts off when coming to a stop when the auto off/on is turned off. engine light finally started coming on but did not at first. after restarting the car and trying to pull out it dies again sometimes leaving you in the middle of an intersection. i got stranded for about 20 minutes when it shut off. eventually i was able to get it restarted and get home with it. not sure if this is related but when turning i can hear a "ding" like a bell. there was also a light that came on which looked like a lightening bolt. i bought the car used and it has always seemed like the idol was set a little to low as it doesn't really move when you take your foot off the brake. also, when the engine went off the instrument on the dash seemed to think the car was still operational. it wouldn't shut off like if you came home and shut the engine off.
Had car 3 weeks 214 miles, when starting vehicle -check engine light came on. dealer states computer control module malfunction , now 31 days later no fix chrysler has determined car to be declared a lemon. dealer states can be 4 weeks before replacement vehicle. dealer has treated us well, been in a loaner for the 31 days will have loaner until new vehicle obtained.
