Recently reported SUSPENSION problems on 2007 Jeep Compass

Clicking noise from suspension area when driving. vehicle only driven at slower speeds as it's vehicle my daughter drives to school. i took to mechanic and he said the frame is badly rusted and just touching it to show me the frame was breaking. vehicle has to have the frame replaced to safely drive vehicle again. this shouldn't happen to a car of this age.

While moving , every bump or crack in road created a rattle and thud and would vibrarate though steering column. went to repair garage and was shown rusted crossmember barely holding together. plus sway bar broke loose from rusted area

Inspection after clunking from the front of the vehicle revealed severe rot and corrosion of the subframe with the mounting for the anti-roll bar completed broken away from the subframe. also severe corrosion around the lower control arm mounting appeared to be close to the failure point. took the vehicle to the jeep dealer who stated that the 10 year extended warranty had expired and that i should not drive the vehicle due to safety concerns. found fca internal warranty document id-14-02 for the subframe corrosion issue dated 5/19/14 which refers to fca service bulletin 23-012-14 and states that all dealer personnel are to be made aware of this bulletin. i have a receipt for other repairs from an fca dealer dated 7/28/14, 2 months after the warranty bulletin date and there was no notification given about the inspection mandated under the warranty and nothing noted on the receipt. thus there was no way for me to know about this waranty and safety issue which i am now told has expired for my vehicle. per dealer instruction, i called fca customer care and was also told the warranty for my vehicle had expired and my only choice was to pay for repairs myself. in scrolling through the complaints already noted in the nhtsa site, i see numerous mentions of this problem with many indicating complete subframe and suspension failure with injury only being prevented by the slow operating speed at the time of the failure. this problem is a manufacturing defect where improper materials and/or coatings were used by fca on these components. for reference my 1998 dodge neon has no such problem after 21 years as it used galvanized coating on this critical component. fca needs to issue a recall and pay all associated costs for this safety related issue and be liable for any injuries resulting from these failures.

Badly rusted engine cradle and oil pan prematurely! fiat chrysler would not help replace even though they know the problem exists. no accidents yet but remains unsafe to drive.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep compass. when the contact took the vehicle to autonation toyota fort myers (2555 colonial blvd, fort myers, fl 33907, (239) 321-5413) for engine repairs, he was informed that the rear suspension crossmember needed to be replaced due to corrosion. the crossmember was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 100,000. *tr

The suspension on the 2007 jeep compass feels dangerous. replaced struts and had other suspension work done, yet vehicle wobbles left to right when hitting bumps. feels like it is skidding across the road. noticable at low speeds feels unsafe at highway speeds.

Rear driver side suspension rusted away from frame. sub frame extremely rusted needs replaced per jeep dealer car wanders now and rollover fear. contacted fiat chrysler customer service. deny issue is there's since out of warranty. internal memo allowed fixing of issue until feb 21, 2017. but since i was unaware there was a safety issue until failure happened apprx mid august 2018.

The underneatheth is rotted and there was a secret recall! because as a owner of a jeep i ever got a letter and if you look online almost everyone with this year jeep has the same problem

While coming to a stop, at a light in heavy rush hour traffic, upon applying the brakes felt sharp jerk in steering with a loud snap noise. not knowing what it was when light changed and i proceeded forward aprox. 2-3ft when car came to a sudden stop jerking to the left. immeadiately placed car in park and looked out driver side window to see front left wheel angled back aprox 35 degrees and jamed into fender well. called tow company and police arrived to direct and divert traffic, no police report made by police because no injuries or other vehicles involved. tow truck driver & police both stated i was fortunate, because had i been going down the road when it happend it could been very serious and/or fatal to not only me but others as well. car towed to nearest repair shop were it was discovered that subframe assembly had actually rusted/rotted through on left front end of vehicle and broke with everything attached to it (steering linkage, left axle, tie rod, etc.) coming loose. researched online and found there hand been a service bulletin 23-012-14 issued for front and rear crossmember corrosion and looking at other forums (ie myjeepcompass.com) and safecar.gov as well. contacted jeep customer service given case #34535927.had to pay to have car towed again, this time to a jeep dealer to inspect and confirm subframe failed. when i asked why there wasn't a recall instead of just a service bulletin that nobody sees except the dealer i could not get a straight answer. jeep did agree to cover crossmember replacement after confirmed, but not to pay for the parts that were damaged from the failure of the crossmember which came to $844.81 i had to pay. i think that would be a small price for them to pay in light of what the cost could and would have been to them for serious injuries and/or fatality related to their known defect. now i get stuck paying for their defect.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep compass. while driving various speeds, the front driver's side tire made a loud grinding noise. there were no warning indicators illuminated prior to the failure. the contact pulled the vehicle over and had it towed to westborn chrysler dodge jeep ram (23300 michigan ave, dearborn, mi 48124, (877) 295-7806). the contact was advised that there were no recalls on the vehicle and there was a dealer bulletin for the sway bar and the crosspins, which needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 200,000.

Rear cross bar axle is defective. the wheel suspension is deteriated to the point that the wheels protrude ouward from the vehicle causing extreme wear on the inside part of the rear tires to the point of wires on radial tires are exposed. the outside part of the tires show minimum wear. mechanics say this cross bar axle is poor quality steel or steel that wasn't cured and finished properly. the cross bar axle is literally eroding with holes occurring right through the axle itself. fear is the car is becoming too dangerous to drive without fear that upon hitting a bump the rear wheels will spread apart and the car fall to the ground.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep compass. while driving 25 mph, the contact heard an abnormal clunking noise and discovered that the subframe and cross member were rusted. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the contact called a local dealer (hillview motors, 5309 us 30, greensburg, pa 15501), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact called a manufacturer and was advised to take the vehicle to a local dealer to be inspected. the failure mileage was approximately 160,000.

My daughter was driving and the left front cross member that had rusted and was completely corroded failed and fell on to the front driver side tire.luckily she was going slow enough and was able to control vehicle to safe stop. if she was on the highway and this happened it could have killed her as well as others.i had just purchased this vehicle on november 2016 from a auto sales company. after the fail i learned that there was a extended (10) warranty (ie x58) that warned of this problem and a fix provided by company. i was never told this information when i purchased this car that it was unsafe to drive and should has been repair before being sold to anyone or at least inspected. i was told by chrysler rep that the vehicle is still registered in canada and they had no idea this car was in united states so the information never followed the car. i was also told that the car make was in sept of 2006 even though it is a 2007 on title and the warranty goes by make day so my car is 6 months out of a warranty that i did not know existed because the car is still registered in canada. the information that this vehicle front or rear suspension could fail should have been the utter most concern for safe by the chrysler company of canada and not a i hope you got our letter that your car my kill you or you family at anytime from rust failure in around 10 years or so and we know it !!! as of today chrysler has not made a decision on weather or not they intend to fix this vehicle but the fact remain there are more 2007 jeep compass out there that need to be warned that the canada version of this vehicle could fail anytime i`m sure i`m not the only person who purchased a compass from canada plant that is now in the usa that has not been told of this problem. this why i feel there should have recalled them for repair in stead of hope you got or letter. look at picture!

Driving my jeep compass and the front end started i thought it had my rocks up in the brake system took a mechanic and he blew everything out there all that stuff and then it still came back making the thumping talking noise like when you turn turn your wheel to the right or left or when you backup and i don't know what's causing it.

Chrysler service bulletin number: 23-012-14 front and rear cross-member corrosion . by what i read it should be covered, but dealership told the girlfriend that it isn't ... this member is rusted completely through but they have stated it is not covered. this issue has the potential to cause death if final failure causes a crash at highway speeds.

The front left side has come apart 2 times from the ball joint and a frame. today it felt and sounded the same i took it in to a shop immediately because i did not want the front tire coming of again. the mechanic put it up on the lift and came and got me. the engine cradle is totally rotten this is were all of your front end part are held in place. the said thing is i still owe 2 more years on this jeep what can i do!!??.

2007 jeep compass. consumer writes in regards to vehicle k-frame replacement/repairs due to corrosion- repairs were performed before consumer was notified of extended warranty for corrosion problems. *smd the inner tie rod end and front sway bar link were replaced. *jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep compass. after refueling the vehicle and driving at a low speed, the vehicle stalled. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. in addition, the passenger side head lamp failed to illuminate. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the tipm for the head lamps needed to be replaced. in addition, the front ball joints and struts were corroded and also needed to be replaced. the technician was unable to diagnose why the vehicle stalled. the struts and ball joints were replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 57,000.

While driving, i started hearing some bumping underneath my compass and a day later it knock and driving rough. i made it to work and immediately call tow. a day after the tow, i received a call from the repair shop and was told that my sub frame had rusted through and broke. i only had the vehicle for two tears and a few months, and still paying for it. i contacted jeep corp. and was told the was nothing they could do for me. my fidelity warranty states what they cover, but when i contacted them they told me that after five years they deems the bad tie rods as wear & tear. i was never told that when i purchased the service contract. if my prayers aren't heard, then i must pay $2700 out of my pocket.

When filled up with fuel, car stalls out and cuts off. i have replaced all of the bearings and car still makes a roaring noise with the axle. upper control arms are completely damaged. battery light continues to come on and headlight was replaced but does not stay on. light stays on indicating vacuum hose issue. 4 wheel drive light stays on.

I have replaced the front and back suspension. i bought this used, and i think i was not given the proper information regarding the car.

i bought this car in 2008, it is a 2007 jeep ( 2014 or around). we had tires wearing out, and took it in for alignment and spent around $200 to fix tie rods and alignment. about a year later went in for oil change to dealer and they said my arm control in front of car ( 2) needed replacement. i get from reading on line and just that they knew that this was a possible problem, that this was a common thing. since it is a safety issue, i am writing this to try and get this as a recall, i paid the almost $1.000 to fix ( my daughter, we share car) but could you look into this and see if it is occurring more then normal ( odds are it is) and what the weakness is in the control arms, and because it can so affect ones ability to control car, has to be put on a recall. Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep compass. while driving 35 mph and making a right turn, the ball joint axle detached from the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. the technician diagnosed that the ball joint axle and the control arm needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

I drove for several hours when my car started sliding to the side. i stopped to check and both my back tires were angled inward and completely ruined. i took the car to a mechanic for alignment, but he could not move the parts due to an excessive amount of rust. he mentioned that the whole subframe and arms had heavy corrosion and whole and the pieces could break anytime soon and i should not be driving the car. an extended warranty is applicable to the k frame for the model of my car but jeep will not honor the warranty on my particular vehicle. i haven't drove the car since.

I had a rear left wheel bearing and hub assembly removed and replaced because of the very loud noises it produced. then he also told me at that time, i would also need a right rear wheel bearing done, and rear brakes. i already had my front brakes replaced. in addition a tie rod replaced as well and also lower left and lower right control arms replaced. not to mention a wheel alignment to boot because i just put on 4 new tires. now with everything i have heard i'm worried about my ball joints, will they be next? i am afraid to drive the dumb car, i don't go for any trips or anything, i am a senior who hasn't much money but i would like to be safe. why aren't they making jeep do a recall on these cars? i also received in the mail a silent recall for corrosion on the cross members, now they are giving me a hard time about that as well. please, someone help us out! *js

At first my car was wearing out tires often ( 83, 068 miles) than it also started having a rough ride...thumps, clumps and clicks when you drove or turned the wheel, than the ride got rougher, it honestly gave me headaches from the noise as the wheels rolled on, ( i got tire rods , control arm and ball joint replaced in june 2014, seven months later control arm, ball joint and tie rod broke, (my wheel was dangling apart from my car) as i was transporting my son to his bus stop, 'luckily no one was injured" my car was towed to a mechanic($600.00), i had my car repaired and was informed the right side was in dire need for ($465.00). this car requires a lot of suspension work, i currently have 87,000 miles on my car now , (fairly low) my car now stalls out when i stop for a red light,it has even putted as if the gas isn't circulating to the engine, 'major issues". *tr

My vehicle, has a rough ride, traction light flashes often. i had several repairs done on my front in june 2014, (upper, lower control arms, left and right sides, rotors ,brakes and tires are always needed). on february 2,2015 my left front ball joints and control arms broke and my wheel broke off, i am currently in need of more control arm and strut repair on my right side again! my vehicle clumps and has a rough ride, i am in constant fear driving this vehicle, because of the constant issues with my front end, even after its repaired. *tr

Upon an inspection of the underneath of my 2007 jeep compass, it was found that my front sub frame (also known as the k frame) has serious rust issues. there is actually a section on the back side of the sub frame that has rusted out (approx. 1/2 inch by 4 inch in size). after some investigating issues with this vehicle on the internet, i found that this a common problem with this vehicle and that jeep has not recalled this issue. i will be replacing the part because this is a major safety issue with this vehicle. *tr

The alternator stops working after 90000 miles. you hear a big thumping sound like a tank. you do feel it but, is loud when accelerating and accelerating. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep compass. the contact stated while driving various speeds a clicking noise was present in the front end of the vehicle. the contact stated the failure was diagnosed and repaired by an independent mechanic who determined the right ball joint was defective and needed to be replaced. the contact notified the manufacturer of the defect. the failure mileage was 63,000. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep compass. while driving at approximately 50 mph, the vehicle experienced acceleration failure. the vehicle accelerated when the brake pedal was depressed. it was also difficult to view the odometer. the contact stated that this was a recurring failure. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the technician was unable to find a failure. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 146,000. in addition, on september 15, 2013, the power steering failed and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle stalled, but was able to restart. the contact stated that this was a recurring failure. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the technician stated that the control arm and bushing failed. the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 153,000.

The car began pulling in the front right tire intermittently. i was a half mile from home, so i turned around to go back home. as i drove into the driveway, the front right tire and entire front right suspension completely fell down (almost completely off) and the tire was pushed sideways and into the frame of the wheel well on the car. the car came to an immediate and abrupt halt. had i been driving on the road when this occurred, my car would have flipped and i would have crashed and could have been killed! this is a huge safety problem and defect that i believe should be part of a recall. i have read many reports of problems with this model/year concerning the wheel bearings, lower control arms, and tie rods. i have great concern driving this vehicle in the future after it is repaired. *tr

2007 jeep compass. consumer writes in regards to dissatisfaction with vehicle. *smd the consumer stated the ball joints needed to be replaced on the vehicle at 39,106. at 43,060, the rear ball joints needed to be replaced. now, with 48,000 miles on the vehicle, the front and rear ball joints needed to be replaced for a third time. the consumer also stated the tire needed to be replaced with only 34,406 miles on the vehicle.

On june 13 2011 my compass with only 17085 miles on it, had cracked a front spring that had grinded a ring around my pass side tire. i was not aware of the problem, but i noticed some noise in the front end so i brought it to a dealer for service. i was told what had happened and how surprised the service dept. was with this incident. they told me they could not believe it. it took a while but after some complaints and disgust with the dealership, but more so with chrysler, everything did get covered buy the 2 parties. not to mention the fact that my vehicle was and still is under warranty. today is january 3 2013 and guess what? i now have to contact the dealer and probably chrysler again. my compass is still under warranty with only 27450 miles and now the driver side front spring is cracked and is beginning to do the exact same thing to my other tire again. i don't know what the dealer will say or do but i will contact them first thing in the morning, they are closed at this time. i was just wondering if this is a common problem or just a fluke? to me this seems like it should be a possible defect and put under a recall. if anyone of these tires would have been warn down enough and a tire would have blown out, there could have been a very serious and or deadly accident. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep compass. while driving 30 mph, the contact heard a noise coming from underneath the front of the vehicle. in addition, the vehicle failed to maintain position when driving. the contact had to continuously maneuver the steering wheel to keep the vehicle from veering. the vehicle was taken to a mechanic who diagnosed that both front lower control arms needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred and the vehicle was taken back to the mechanic who diagnosed that both front lower control arms needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 40,000.

Just like a lot of other complaints, had to have tie rods and ball joints replaced. seem like a lot of the jeep compasses have this problem. can they not make them better. should be a recall. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep compass. the contact stated that the struts, ball joints and wheel hubs had to be replaced on the vehicle three times. the dealer stated that the parts were designed to wear. the contact stated that the transmission also failed. the dealer advised the contact that the cvt part was the cause of the failure and the entire transmission would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 128,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep compass. the contact stated that he could hear noises coming from under the vehicle while driving at various speeds over 35 mph. the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop and the contact was informed that the tie rod assembly and all of the ball joints needed to be replaced. the tie rod assembly was replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 31,824. updated 02/0812 *bf the mechanic replaced the lower left control arm and lower right control arm. updated 02/29/12

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep compass. the contact stated that during a state inspection, the private mechanic stated that both lower front control arms needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 42,000 and the current mileage was 43,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep compass. the contact stated that the vehicle would drift from lane to lane abnormally when driving 60 mph in rainy weather. the vehicle was taken to have the tires replaced when he was advised by the mechanic that the front lower ball joints would need replacing. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 58,000.

The bearings melted into the hub assembly and it wore out the brakes and ruin all four tires, now the lower control arms are going out. i have only 43000 miles on the car and the warranty has ran out at 36000 miles. this should not have happen with such low mileage. alignment will not stay because of the tires and the lower control arms. there has not been a recall but the hub, bearings are not able to geased. so these parts wear out sooner than normal. *tr

I was informed by the dealership of which i purchased my vehicle that my vehicle requires front control arms and tie rods which was given an estimate of about $900.00 to correct. my vehicle has 17,000 miles and is out of warranty, however, i viewed numerous complaints online of the same nature on the same year, make, and model vehicle. this appears to be a defect from the manufacturer since there were so many identical complaints indicated online. the dealership requested i do not drive this vehicle until repaired due to a safety issue. the dealership also said the items which need to be repaired will be replaced with a better quality and this occurred on many of these vehicles from this particular year. *tr

Took vehicle for yearly inspection where the car was purchased, new. they were at that time a chrysler jeep dealer. it didn't pass the inspection due to the poor condition of the ball joints - mileage at that time was only 14,258. it was suggested i contact chrysler to notify them. they advised me to take it to a local qualified dealership. it was taken for them to check the ball joints. after 2 weeks of not driving the car due to its dangerous condition, the ball joints and both lower control arms were replaced at a cost to me of $214.00. the treatment i received and the amount of time it took them to decide to do the job at the "qualified dealer" was inexcusable. i feel chrysler should of taken care of the cost of the repair, since it was not due to anything i did but the quality of the parts installed originally. this complaint would of been submitted earlier but i was not aware of the nhtsa. *tr

No crash or injury, however the incident involved was that the tie rod on the left front side on my jeep compass 2007 was loose and the wheel was ready to fall off the auto. the jeep 2007 had 72,900 miles original. i have not had any accidents or abusive driving with the vehicle which i purchased from the jeep dealer in milwaukee in february 2010 with 68,000 orig. miles and in very good condition. *tr

I got a flat tire on may of 2011, after taking it to a tireshop i was informed that i needed 2 lower control arms, and tire rods. there was also uneven wear on the front tires. *tr

Developed a noticable vibration.took to dealer and was advised the ball joints needed replacement and the vehicle was dangerous to drive. when picked up the vehicle, invoice stated 2 lower arms and a tie rod were replaced. i have driven many vehicles over 100,000 miles and never have had to replace these parts. therefore i feel they were either defective or poorly design ed and they should be subject to recall replacement or inspection. vehicle was only driven on local streets.
