Problems with 2006 Jeep Commander SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2006 Jeep Commander starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 110 828 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2006 Jeep Commander

I just purchased this 2006 jeep commander and noticed after purchase the airbag indicator light came on. read later this is a common problem. did manufacturer ever put out a recall for this? is this a sensor issue?

After having the recalled ignition and tcm replaced/reprogrammed the esp,bas and traction lights come and the two driver side brakes and tires lock up, makes a terrible grinding noise, and the vehicle slides while trying to make a turn. this problem occurs while the vehicle is in motion and without warning.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving 45 mph, the brake pedal was depressed, but the brakes did not respond. the contact crashed into the rear of another vehicle. after the crash, the contact's vehicle stalled without warning. the air bags failed to deploy. there were no injuries and a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed. the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v43800 (electrical system). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 190,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving various speeds, a grinding sound emitted from the vehicle and it jerked forward. the abs warning light illuminated. the contact mentioned that the failure occurred when the vehicle was first started and then operated normally. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that an unknown sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was previously serviced per nhtsa campaign number: (service brakes, hydraulic). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 163,350.

When i am driving on the main city road or highway i notice about three things that happen all at once. the first thing is i lose control of my steering. the second thing is it feels like my jeep went into park causing all my wheels to break for 1 to 3 second. the third thing is it feels as the engine stalled. all these things happen at the same time. this causes my jeep to stop or stall on the road sending me and my passengers to lounge forward as if i had hit an invisible wall at full force.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle lost power and stalled. the contact stated that the brakes became inoperable, which caused the vehicle to crash into the rear of another vehicle. the contact sustained injuries to the lower back that did not require medical attention. a police report was not filed. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the contact stated that the failure was intermittent. the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 174,000. updated 07/13/16*lj *cn

Tl* the contact owned a 2006 jeep commander. while driving approximately 5 mph in reverse, the brakes malfunctioned and the vehicle would not stop. as a result, the contact's vehicle crashed into a second vehicle. there were no injuries and a police report was not filed. the vehicle was destroyed and towed. the cause of the failure was not determined. the manufacturer was not notified. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 150,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving 40 mph, the brake pedal was depressed, but the brakes failed to respond. the contact crashed into the rear of another vehicle. the air bags did not deploy. a police report was filed. there were no injuries reported in either vehicle. medical attention was not required. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic; however, the contact did not know what failure was diagnosed or whether any component needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 190,000.

2006 jeep commander with 93000. i have had serviced multiple times over brakes and suspension. brakes will just grind when trying to stop at times. brakes have been replaced and problem still occurs. every mechanic has said everything looks good. had bigotires do 3 inspections on brakes and suspension and everything checked out! suspension- i have had services 3 times. all new parts have been put on front drivers side yet problem still persist. popping noise and squeaking when turning and hitting speed bumps or pot holes and very noisy when backing up. lighting has also started to go off and on! i believe something is wrong with the lighting. sometimes when i turn them on they do not come on and once i turned them off and they did not turn off and made battery go dead but once jumps they were back to normal except my back tail light which i have tried having replaced multiple times does not work anymore and front passenger side head light has some major issues! also it is very hard to see when it rains even with brand new wipers there just wasn't much thought put into the commanders! too many blind spots and also door handles on the inside easily break off!

I was driving down the hwy and my vehicle turned off. i lost power steering breaks and was not able to properly maintain control of my vehicle in order to avoid an accident. this had happened twice before this time, and i looked to see that there was a recall on my jeep for an ingition switch and the the exact discription of what would happen if my car was effected fit my situation. i then called jeep and advised them of this and they said i neeeded to have it diagnoised by a jeep dealership. i had the vehicle towed at my expensense and rented a car at my expense. the dealership confirmed my assumption and in fact the issue i was experiencing is part of the recall. jeep now tells me they don't have the parts and they have not made a decision on whether it's neccessary to provide a replacement vehicle until they have a resolve. am i supposed to be without a vehicle or potentially drive mine with 3 children, and potentially loose power again causing a loss of control? what i am supposed to do from here?

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving 15 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. the contact also stated that the brake pedal was depressed and failed to respond. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact received a notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system) and believed that the failure was related to the recall. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 84,000.

P41 / nhtsa 14v-438 engine shut off while driving. removed everything from key chain, and left enough space between knee and key. when car bounces, cannot control knee. happened more than 5 times past a month. called chrysler, have no estimated time for parts production. *tr

My vehicle constantly stalls while slowing down to almost a stop or a stops. it happens almost every time now. when slowing down for a light while traffic is slowly moving my jeep stalls and i've almost been hit 5 times now. not good. *tr

Help please!!!!!!! i have come here and filed complaints on this vehicle a few times! there is currently a recall on this vehicle, however there is no solution so we are forced to drive in a very dangerous situation! my jeep dies on me almost twice a week!!! i am 5'1 my knees are no where near the ignition switch! i have taken off everything from my key ring since it started dying in july!!! today i am in tears! we have snow packed icy roads and my jeep died as i was turning a corner, barely missing another vehicle and with no power steering i was able to get to a curb. i can put the jeep in park and restart it, but today was a close call! i drive my children in this vehicle!!! we have no other vehicle that i can use! i cannot responsibly sell this vehicle, i would feel horrible if something happened to another family!!! this agency is set up to maintain the safety of the consumer, please, please help us who are driving this extremely dangerous vehicle! i am copying this and sending it to whatever media outlet will listen!!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the engine stalled, the steering wheel became difficult to turn and the brakes failed to engage. the vehicle was taken to dealer. the technician diagnosed that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact received a notification for nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system) and believed the failure was directly related to the recall. the contact stated that the part needed to remedy the vehicle was not available. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 84,000.

My jeep commander turned off, causing my brakes to fail along with steering and airbags to fail. i crashed into the back of someone towing a pontoon boat. the total cost of damage was over $7,000. my insurance had to cover it. this is because of the recall p41. i have called and complained several times about my dash lights flickering, and my jeep turning itself off. i was without my vehicle for 3 weeks while it was being repaired. chrysler needs to get this issue figured out! this could have been a much worse accident had i been on the interstate. *tr

In september of 2014 i recently bought a 2006 jeep commander. a few weeks after purchasing the vehicle i noticed the car was shutting off when i was at stop signs, red lights, and most seriously when i was driving. i was not sure as to why my car was doing this. i tried everything from a new battery and countless appointments at my mechanic. i was not informed of any type of recall on my car, until i did my own personal research. in may of 2015 i took my car to a chrysler, dodge, jeep and ram dealership to find out when i could order the part for the p-41 recall on my car. i was informed that the part was not available in the country and they were not sure of when it would arrive. i was told the car was "safe" to drive. i was given a few tips: sit far enough away from the steering wheel so my knees were not close to the key, have the car key only on a ring by itself, always wear my seat belt, and avoid having a front passenger. it was only a matter of 4 weeks until i was experiencing the issue again. i was driving on the highway with my boyfriend and one year old daughter going about 65mph when my car completely shut off, i lost power steering, brakes, and every single light turned on. i had to resort to pulling the e-brake which did not help slow my car down. this was the most serious and dangerous incident, luckily we did not get hurt, or hurt anyone else. as a result, i took my car to another jeep dealership and was advised the same information that the part was not able to be ordered and given the same tips. i requested a rental for the safety of myself and my daughter. it took me 2 weeks to finally receive a rental. i have had a rental for almost two weeks now and was told by the dealership, by pulling the e-brake it was going to cost me $1600 to fix. i do not feel as if i am responsible for the cost of the repair, considering this was caused by the p-41 recall.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving 40 mph, the brake pedal failed to respond when it was depressed. the failure occurred four times. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 70,491.

Braking to approach a red light at an intersection the brakes felt mushy followed by complete loss of power. i was stopped in the inside lane of a 4-lane hwy at an intersection without power!. after a moment of panic....thank heavens no oncoming traffic behind me....i put the car into park and restarted the engine. i traveled two blocks to where i could safely exit the hwy and park. after a few minutes while i calmed down i proceeded to drive the vehicle to my home. since that time i have tried to get the vehicle in for a check but cannot get an appointment until august. it has been a few days and i have no choice but to use the vehicle. i have noted some missing and hesitating from time to time but not complete failure. however, i would not take this vehicle on an open hwy as it is performing right now. *tr

I received a safety recall notice from chrysler for my jeep commander stating that i may experience an unintended change in ignition switch position while driving, which could result in loss of engine power, power steering, and braking, and increases my risk of a crash. i have called chrysler group recall center 1-800-853-1403, option 6 countless times, unfortunately many times having to hang up after waiting 25 minutes to get through. i have also repeatedly called beyer/jeep/chrysler 973-644-3200 and they have been very short with me and tell me the same thing every time i call- they have no date of when the part will be in. when i drive on the highway, i am terrified of losing control of my car. i have seen on the news people that have been in accidents because of this ignition switch and heard that chrysler has a buyout program. i am interested in finding out about this program because i think that waiting over a year, and with no resolution in sight, is a bit ridiculous and i dont want to become a statistic. please advice me as to what my next step should be.

While driving and turning a left corner resulted in loss of engine power, power steering, and braking. this has happened on several occasions and we have stopped driving the family vehicle due to this safety issue which is not deemed safe to drive especially up and down hills....we had to purchase another vehicle since the recall fix is still not available and won't be for over 1 year! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that the instrument panel lights flickered and there was an intermittent electrical short with the lighting on the dashboard and the headlights. the contact stated that at times it was difficult to change gears from the gear box. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who diagnosed that the dialog idle air control valve needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired and the failure recurred. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 07v434000 (service brakes, hydraulic) and 13v175000 (electrical system , power train). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 88,000.

Driving north from detroit with my uncle, passing a semi on i 75 at about 70-75. the engine just quit, likesome turned the key off. got to the side of the road, put vec. in park started back up drove home. took jeep to al serra,s the 29 th got it back 6/2/14 found no reason why it shut down. june 15 th when driving on bristol road at 45 mph it quit again, took it back to al serra,s 2days later got it back, still couldn't find cause. *tr

My beloved jeep commander suddenly shut off while driving at 40mph. with no prior problems or warning signs the engine completely stalled- instantly i lost both power steering & brakes. needless to say i was terrified. after much confusion & hassle i was told to replace my key. (reason being the 'chip' inside was malfunctioning.) i replaced the $270 key which solved nothing. to my surprise, many commander owners experience this same problem with no help from jeep. not only do jeep dealerships ignore the potential recall warning on the commander, but they actually recommend expensive 'solutions' that do not even touch the known problem. it seems as though there are no solutions for this faulty system, given that no dealership can successfully stop the shutting off. there are way too many owners experiencing the same dangerous stall. i cannot in good conscience ignore the fact that this problem goes beyond inconvenience; this is potentially very dangerous and the jeep commander needs to be recalled. *tr

The vehicle randomly shuts off. the dash gauges flicker and/or go off for a brief time. if breaks are engaged at that time, abs stops. if headlights are on auto, they turn off. if turning a hard left or right (such as turning into a driveway, turning on to a street, parking) power steering stops working. if the lights are on but not on auto the lights stay on. the radio stays on. these symptoms would indicate that there is a problem with the ignition switch. when this issue occurs, it seems to stop by pushing on the key. this has happened multiple times. after visiting this page, a log will be created to record date, time, and speed. this is a huge safety issue. after much research many users of internet forums for jeeps, complain about this issue (reference urls can be provided). the nhtsa campaign number: 14v047000 sounds very similar in nature. could the nhtsa look in to the parts being the same? *tr

My wife reported a strange thumping sound from under the car. she said it began after dropping children at school and going over a speed bump at the school. something she does every day. upon inspection i found the driver side emergency brake cable was interfering with the rear universal joint on the driveshaft. the cable was kinked and being cut by the rotation of the driveshaft. there was also abrasion of the gas tank splash guard. i have no doubt if this happened at highway speed the cable would be cut in half and possibly wrap around the driveshaft causing the driver side emergency brake to apply and lock-up the wheel resulting in a rollover. the gas tank could also have been punctured if the cable was pulled by the driveshaft. somehow the normal action of the vehicles suspension was able to place this cable in contact with the driveshaft. the rotation of the universal joint caught the cable pulling it into the rotating shaft. i consider this a class 1 defect that should be corrected with a model recall. normally the emergency brake cable is routed off to the side and not directly over the differential. what were they thinking? chrysler needs to devise a supplemental attaching point that will ensure the cables are not able to contact the driveshaft even under extreme off road driving. i have a full set of photos available upon request. i have ordered a new cable but the part number is on back order. this indicates there is a problem when the part cannot be stocked due to high demand. this cable should last the life of the vehicle without question. nhtsa is there for the public. it exists on public taxes. it is not there to shield corporate mistakes and short cuts. i feel that nhtsa is not operating within the public trust if it allows defects to be ignored. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle suddenly accelerated independently. the contact also mentioned that the brakes seized and would not immediately release. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the mechanic stated that there were no recalls. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000. the current mileage was 96,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact received a recall notification for nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system). the contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning. also, the brakes needed to be engaged with excessive force in order to stop the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.

On the evening of 5/04/2013 while driving on the highway at a rate of between 65 & 70 mph my headlights along with my entire dashboard and instrument panel begin flickering and eventually went out! i pulled over turned the engine off and restarted it the headlight came on immediately, however the instrument panel flickered for a bit then eventually illuminated. went into autozone (@#$%) got a reading, was told it was a minor issue and to get it checked out. a couple days go by really not driving it much a little nervous, however when starting the vehicle none of the instrument panel is working, thy tachometer needle, the speedometer nothing, however the engine was running and it would shift in and out of gear, but it would jerk and stall and whenever i tried to make a left or right turn the brakes would grind and screech! "yites" thank god, we have another vehicle! anyway i called a local chrysler dealership and was told that i would have to be charged a diagnostic fee of $130.00 for each component tested??? really! anyway it gets better i called chrysler-jeep manufacturer and they told me that although my car was doing exactly what millions of other recalled commanders made in the same year 2006 were doing, my "vin" number wasn't on the recall list, gooooo figure! so yeah, although my jeep shifts in and out of gear on the highway, cluster board and headlights flicker off and it stalls like it going to shut off! no cigar! i guess i'll bring to where i purchased it from and use my "max care warranty" god give me the strength! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that when applying the brakes at various speeds, the vehicle would exhibit a whining noise and acted as it were attempting to stall. the vehicle was taken to a independent mechanic, who stated that the problem was unknown. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 141,600.

I bought this car from a used dealership i have only owned this vehicle for about 3 months. have been having trouble for the last month and a half. and it all began on the interstate. i was traveling on the interstate doing about 75 and it just shut off in the middle of a cluster of cars and i had to go over 2 lanes to get to the shoulder. i lost steering and brakes within 10 seconds. one of the most scariest rides ever. i am now afraid to travel on the interstate with this vehicle. since this has happened it has shut off an additional 5 times i took it to the dealership cause the engine light was on and they said it was a map sensor, i have replaced this twice already. now it doesn't idle right and looses power in between 30 and 35 mph. and the engine light has once again came on. haven't had it checked yet cause it is a saturday night guess i will have to take it somewhere on monday. *tr

Jeep commander stalls at driving speeds in which has almost caused 3 vehicle accidents, bas esp and traction control light is on and malfunctioned, all wheel drive malfunction. dealer claims internal fault in front control module. *tr

Would driving like 25 mph the car stops and engine shot off also light coming on the inside and the air conditioned it does t work low you have to put it always until high the way it can start working also problem with the engine making a noise like rcrccrcrcrcrcrccrc like the manifold or exhaust problems this car is sooo weird i already took it to the private mechanic and they can t do anything cause the manufactured problems. *tr

Just dropped my children off - on my way to work again - going approx 40-45 mph..... all of a sudden i feel a slight jerk and my car completely shuts off. (key still in on position-so no, my knee did not hit the keys) brakes - electrical - engine - all went out. i coasted to the side of the road. waited about 10 mins after speaking with my husband - started it back up engine light was on.... i p laced my hazards on and proceeded to continue down the road - at this point i am approx 15-20 miles from work. *tr

Approx 2 miles from work - making a right hand turn at a light. hazards on - taking precaution... car behind me. once i make the turn my car completely shuts off again. no brakes not steering - nothing... my car just happened to coast to the right as it is.... car behind missed me by an inch of slamming into me. waited a good 1/2 hour - my husband came and drove it the rest of the way to the work parking lot. i called jeep in lugoff sc and like every other dealership out there - they have no memory of hearing of any 2006 - 2007 jeep commander problems. i have called chyrsler care 8009921997 - dealerships... they all make me out to be crazy. i am going to report them to the bbb as well. i have 3 children - 9,8, and 20 mths old. chrysler must be waiting for someone to get killed.... i normally take the hwy to work - but today for some reason i decided to head to work on a back road. .... i can not believe with all the issues and complaints i have read about this same problem - that it is even legal to sell this car used,... *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving 30 mph, the vehicle would not stop when the contact applied the brakes. as a result, the contact's vehicle rear ended another vehicle. the air bags did not deploy. a police report was filed. there were no injuries. the vehicle was able to be driven home. the vehicle was repaired, but then deemed unable to be driven by the insurance company. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was called and did not assist since the crash occurred in 2012. the contact received a notice for nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system) in 2014. the failure mileage and vin were unknown.

Driving to work at an intersection. in the midst of turning left on to the road to my work parking lot... my car stalled on me. again, i was in an intersection with on coming traffic. no lights came on (warning lites) no weird sounds , no jerking - just stalled. started back up once i turned the key off and then on again. *tr

Jeep commander 2006 completely shut down, steering locked up and the brakes locked up, while going in motion. could have been in a fatal accident. happened several times before reaching destination. dealer stated that the control module needed to be replaced. *tr

I was driving down a neighborhood street and re-adjusted my seating position. while driving, my knee slightly bumped the key and turned off my car while it was in drive. i then lost power steering and power brakes. luckily i was moving slowly and could pull over and stop the car. i then tested it again in a parking lot and i determined that my jeep shuts off every time i move the key with my knee, even while driving. potentially very dangerous. *tr

In march of 2012, i was driving my 2006 jeep commander v8 on a two lane highway.at the time of the accident, i had been decreasing speed, when the truck in front of me suddenly slammed on his brakes. however, when i pressed down hard on my brakes, my brakes/anti-lock brakes completely failed, causing me to crash into the truck in front of me. while trying to brake, my car stalled and continued to propel forward, causing a lack of steering capability, inevitably causing a crash, in which my air bags did not deploy. after the police arrived, i was able to start the car and barely made it home, having to push it several blocks. my suv went into the shop for almost one month. after my suv was fixed, including exterior and radiator, the suv continued to overheat without cause and it was now considered a total loss. i was not prepared for my vehicle to be considered a total loss as the issues appeared to be minor. i endured major hardship as a result on this accident, including lack of work and occurred at an inopportune time for me to buy a new vehicle, resulting in a high interest rate and skyrocketing insurance, since i was considered at fault, despite lack of being cited due to vehicle issues. after 2 yrs, i finally was able to refinance my car; however, my insurance will remain high til feb 2015 @$314 (35 mos). i did not realize why the vehicle's braking and stalling occurred as i was not made aware of the recall until july 2014! if recalls occurred in 07-09, why was i not informed prior to this accident? this accident could have been prevented! when i called to speak to chrysler, they said that there was nothing that they could do because the car was scrapped. i do not understand why some people can be compensated for issues, but i am disregarded despite the ongoing hardship caused by a defect caused by chrysler! is there anyone out there that can help!? *js

Driving on beltway and loud noise began to occur, sounds like rubbing along the floor of vehicle went to deal and they didn't find anything second occurrence maybe three month there after and finally found the problem brake cable fixture broke and brake cable rubbing retied and fixed. third time samething and it was fixed. fourth time the manager recommended i pay 549.00 to replace the cables and this began two months after buying the vehicle. im left with the bill!!!! *tr

While driving, i have a total loss of interior electrical. all systems go off although the vehicle continues running. this affects the steering as well as braking. there is nothing consistent about the problem. it has been taken to multiple dealers and they can find no issue. i've even taken in a video recording of the situation.
