Problems with 2017 Jeep Cherokee POWER TRAIN

On average, the 2017 Jeep Cherokee starts to “feel” problems with the POWER TRAIN and its various aspects after 33 243 miles.

Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2017 Jeep Cherokee

My jeep has less than 30,000 miles on it and i keep up to date on oil changes (every 500 miles); however, when the 5,000 mile marker starts approaching i will be in driving in a forward motion and the dashboard will light up saying "shift to neutral or park", the gas pedal tightens up to the point i am no longer able to step on it anymore, and the steering wheel tightens up and i can no longer move that. at this point my vehicle just completely stops in the middle of driving. the most recent time (4,100 miles after my last oil change) i was attempting to merge onto the highway the other day and this same thing happened. it takes about 4 minutes for the car to start working again, but this is an extremely unsafe issue that should not be happening. i have had this issue happen multiple times in the past, and the dealership shrugged it off. i have had enough of this, a vehicle (even without a recent oil change, let alone a vehicle that is up to date on oil changes and hasn't hit the 5,000 mile marker) should not come to a complete stop in the middle of driving. this is a huge safety hazard. obviously other people are experiencing the same issue. at any point, i feel as though my vehicle might stop working on me at a random time (again without any warning whatsoever) and cause me to be in a sever accident. this is not a matter to take lightly, i have been contacting my dealership and have yet to have any help/ issues resolved.

Service shifter alert shows in gauge area while driving. then all the lights on the gear shifter alluminate. problem is random and occurs one to two times a week. the vehicle is always in motion when the error happens. the issue has happened on city streets before i get to the highway. always driving the vehicle in a forward motion.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 jeep cherokee. while driving 40 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning and the service shifter warning indicator illuminated. the contact powered off the engine while in traffic. the vehicle was restarted and was able to drive normally, but the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to don jackson chrysler dodge jeep ram (located at 3950 jonesboro rd, union city, ga 30291, (770) 969-7229) where it was diagnosed that the gear shifter needed to be replaced and an oil change was needed. the vehicle was not repaired because the warranty did not cover the repair. the manufacturer was notified and provided a case number. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

At 9000 miles the service shifter message came on while driving from carthage to galveston texas contacted a local dealer and was told dont place in park to take it to the dealership drove it back to marshall texas to dealership and they said they were having problems with the shifter so replaced the entire shifter.. at 40,000 miles shifter light again took to dealership in carthage and said they fixed the tcm to transmission. now at 49000 it has done it again, replacing the wiring harness from shifter to transmission. been in shop for a week still no word .the service shifter comes on evey time it is cranked.

At 9000 miles the "service shifter" light came on and took to dealer as a mechanic told me do not put in park. at 40,000 miles it came on again and was told the tcm had a recall ,,and if it happened again bring back about 3 weeks later it came on again and is still in shop. now i am worried after a mechanic told me it can lock up the transmission and cause the vehicle to crash,,, i dont feel safe driving the vehicle any lonker,, and am worried for my self and family.

Was getting a "service shifter" message on dash and brought to dealership whom replaced the shifter mechanism under warranty on july 11, 2018 at 37,891 miles. the dealership stated that it was our fault for leaving a cup in the cup holder which can short out the shifter mechanism (seems like a bad design if you cannot use a cup holder) now the problem has come up again on december 21, 2018 with 54,230 miles, making this component out of warranty. a cup was never left in the cup holder and was only used when someone was in the car. i really do not want to pay for a shifter every 6 months as long as i own the vehicle. this seems to be a common problem with this system and due to the nature of it being tied to the transmission of the car, it seems like a very high safety concern. the first time it started happening, it occurred from shifting from reverse to drive and the car had to be turned off and then on to operate. this issue became worse as time went on. this latest occurrence happened when putting the vehicle into drive before driving. turned off car and turned back on and it did not display the error message. i am sure this will occur more frequently as the days pass since i am writing this at the time of failure.

As i was accelerating out of a corner, i lost total power in the drive train. i was not able to accelerate at all, its as if the neutral was switched on by itself. all my lights on the gear shifter lit up. my dash displayed a message something along the lines of that i have to put the car in neutral or park, press the brake and change the gear back to drive. as this happened, i was almost hit from behind by the driver driving behind me. i pulled over to the shoulder and put the car in neutral, pressed the brake, and put the car back in drive and nothing happened. i tried it again but this time i put it in park and still nothing. so i put the car in park and turned off the ignition. i waiting about 10 seconds and tried starting my car which it would not start. all the lights on the shifter were still lit up and the display message still said the same thing. the car finally started after about 5 tries. all the lights turned off and i was able to drive. this issue seems to correspond with the message that i get several times a week "service shifter". i went to the dealer to get the service shifter checked out but since i was passed the 36k miles, i had no more warranty. i have also researched this issue online and a lot of jeep cherokees are having the same issues. some were even in accidents with their cherokees when they lost power in the drive train.

Vehicle losing power upon turning or take off, gear shifting while driving and accelerating. shifting is violent and loss of power major. no long feel safe driving and only has 44k miles on it. dealer has done electronic update and did not fix issue, but made it worse

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 jeep cherokee. while driving 40 mph, the "service shifter" warning message illuminated and the vehicle stalled. the contact stated that every gear on the shift assembly illuminated. the contact pulled into a nearby parking lot, placed the vehicle in the park position, and restarted the vehicle. the vehicle was able to be driven to the contact's residence. tim short chrysler of middlesboro (1935 us-25e scenic, middlesboro, kentucky 40965, (606) 248-3444) was made aware of the failure and performed a software update on the vehicle, but the failure recurred five days later. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not safe to drive. the manufacturer also provided the contact with case number: 35250798. the failure mileage was approximately 19,000.

Three different types of shifter-transmission issues in approximately 6 months of normal in-town and freeway driving. 1. service shifter warning came on suddenly on a level, dry pavement on cruise control at 70mph on the freeway (17k miles on vehicle) one month, after it happened at 15mph on dry, straight, level pavement in the city and was taken to the dealership and told nothing, was wrong. turning the vehicle off and on again eliminates notification. the service department at jeep dealership notified of the 2nd incident which happened today, and i have an appointment next week to have it checked. 2. shifter popped out of drive suddenly while driving on dry, flat, straight at 35 mph city street (15k on vehicle) into neutral. had my hands on the wheel and did not bump it. would not go easily back to park or drive. this happened approximately one month before service shifter incidents. 3. going through a car wash in neutral at the end when the vehicle had rolled off the conveyor and was stopped i attempted to put it into drive and vehicle revved to a high rpm but did not engage into drive. i had to put into park, shut it off and then turn it back on again to get the vehicle to go into drive. this happened at approximately 5k-10k miles on two separate occasions.

While driving at interstate speeds of 70-75 mph, the motor revved up to 3500 rpm's and i discovered that the car had lost propulsion and would not pull. i was able to coast onto the shoulder and stopped. i took the gearshift out of drive and placed it into park. i put it back into drive, and it began to work again. this first occurred in july of 2018. it happened several more times where-in the car appeared to shift out of gear even though the shifter was in the d position. i took it to the dealer and was told that there was a recall and the computer needed updating. this service was performed on that day. since then, the vehicle has continued to appear to jump into neutral while i am driving at highway speeds. the motor will revv, and the vehicle stops pulling. i took it back to the dealer today and was told that there was nothing wrong with it. *dt *js *dt

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that the gear shift failed to change out of the park position. the vehicle was not diagnosed; however, the dealer (gill auto group madera, 1100 s madera ave, madera, ca 93637, 1-(877) 698-2434) scheduled an appointment for 09/14/18. the failure was progressing intermittently; therefore, the vehicle was not being driven. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 29,455.

The vehicle was in motion. just cranked it and pulling out of the parking lot at a target in huntsville alabama. the car shifted hard and i heard a pop. i stopped at the end of the row to pull out. i heard another pop while turning into the bottom parking lot road. i made it to the highway not hearing another pop. i made it to the red light and the car lost power to the transmission. i coasted into a parking lot. the car would not engage in forward or reverse. the car would power up and all other functions worked. *dt updated 10/18/18*jb

Service shifter warning light comes on the dash after the shifter illuminates all red lights on the gear shift, this happens always while in motion driving down the road . there is no set speed nor driving conditions that triggers this defect. once stopped and the car is turned off the lights and warning will go off. within a few minutes the lights and warning will come back on as i begin driving again. this is happening more frequently. i took the jeep to the local dealership and they assured me they fixed the problem. since that "repair" (where nothing was fixed), the warning light and gear shifter lights have came on numerous times. i take pictures every time this happens, showing the mileage. the drive train sometimes seems to have a tug feeling as the car is in motion. this happens without the warning or illuminated gear shifter panel lighting up with all red. i was told the cherokee grand had a recall on this but not the cherokee latitude. it came on twice today, i have a trip planned across country, so my husband has it at the same local dealership that claims they looked at it before and corrected it. they say it may be a computer issue that can be fixed. i feel it is a mechanical issue in the shifter and i am in danger of a wreck happening! the dealership has agreed to replace the shifter on 9/6/2018 at fletcher joplin mo. i am reporting this to document the problem incase there is further issues. *tt *tr *as

Gear shift service and shifting issues lights

Warning light on dash said service shifter and all gears at shifter where all red.it has happened 2 more time all when driving down the road.

I was on interstate going 60mph, a van was beside me turning into my lane. to avoid a crash i pushed down on gas pedal my car did nothing so i hit the brake then the car lunge forward and my rpm was 6. i almost hit the van in rear end.

Around 10000 miles my jeep started having a bucking/jerking feeling when accelerating or slowing down while driving. i took it to the dealership at 18000 miles. the dealership was aware of this concern and did a tcm quick learn (12 june 18). on 19 june 18 same problem dealership is calling it harsh up shift and down shift more in lower gears while driving. dealership verified concern with test drive and replaced the valve body. then 25 jun 18 check engine light code: u0402 another tcm relearn. on july 14 same shifting issue while driving on interstate and july 15 check engine light came on. i took to another dealership july 16 because i am on vacation same code u0402, tcm relearn. transmission and pcm codes. service manager said safe to drive. while driving same day to another state on vacation same shifting issue. this vehicle is unsafe! consistent shifting problems, concerning the transmissioin while driving. i have two children every-time i get the jeep back the dealer says it is fixed it is not and the transmission issues are a safety concerns. driving 70 mph on an interstate with a transmission that can have shifting concerns at anytime when slowing down or speeding up is a huge risk to everyone on the road. this vehicle should be recalled.

Transmission is slipping and slamming into gears. feels like the vehicle is going to stall at stop lights when transmission is in drive.

Throttle body and gaskets were replaced after leaving me stranded in the street. also, linkage was replaced due to service shifter warning. please see the attached document for additional details.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that the gear shifter service indicator illuminated. the contact took the vehicle to gladstone dodge chrysler jeep and ram (5610 north oak trafficway, gladstone, mo 64118, (816) 455-3500) where it was diagnosed that the shifter service bezel was replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the same dealer where it was diagnosed that the shifter service bezel needed to be replaced and the part was on backorder. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 64639458. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 10,000.

I bought my car 3/21/2017 and i've loved it up until the recent problems. since june/2019 when i make a left turn all of the lights on my gear shifter light up and a display of "service shifter" pops up and the only way to clear it is to pull over, turn the car off and start it up. at first it happened randomly, but now it more frequent. i purchased an extended warranty and they told me there is nothing wrong, but now an additional issue has started. sometimes when all the lights appear when i'm make a turn or getting on the highway even, i've almost been rear ended multiple times because now the car will just shut off!! this is scary and unsafe, but it is my only means of transportation and yes all of my regular maintenance is up to date as well.

Car started having shifting issues when at a high rate of speed, had to take foot of the gas for it to shift. went for my oil change and talked about this they informed me that chrysler did not want to 'recall' all the vehicles so they were just fixing it with a new computer chip. they said if it continues to let them know. well, it's still doing it but now i am having issues with the car dinging when turning as if my gas light comes on but nothing appears on the dash board. yesterday i went around a turn it dinged but then also a message appear saying something about the shifter being put in d. the car had pretty much died. tried restarting it would just rev. the battery and transmission light appeared. we waited a few minutes and tried again it finally turned over. i do all highway driving to and from work this is the last thing i need is to get into an accident because the vehicle failed. law suit *purchased this car new in april 2017, has 31,000 highway miles on it.

Transmission is slipping and grinding after trying to accelerate from stop or slow speed. it has already been flashed once but mark's casa in albuquerque, new mexico refuses to do anything else to try to fix it. they state that there is nothing else they can do.

Multiple sporadic flashing loss of traction light on dry roads and rolling starts. 5/10/18 4872m vehicle in motion on city street 35mph "service parking brake" flashed on display 5/12/18 5004m making left turn from stop on yield green very slight decline, city street, depressed gas pedal to make turn, car slipped out of gear flashing to put car in neutral or park and then back in drive. car rolled into intersection. i flipped over to tiptronic w/o response, shifted to neutral and back w/o response, kids in backseat while car is stalled perpendicular to oncoming traffic. turned hazards on, shifted to park and back, no response, rolled to side of road at this point. put car back in park, counted to five, shifted back to drive, and car responded. 5/12/18 5084m fianc driving, city street 45mph. making left turn across 3 oncoming lanes from stop, car again slipped from gear and flashed message to shift into neutral or park and then back to drive. fianc shifted to neutral and back into drive w/o response. i turned on hazards, he shifts car into park and counted a few seconds before putting it park in drive and pulling off the road. dealership closed. 5/14/18 dropped car off at jeep 5/22/18 vm from jeep, they didn't know what the issue was 5/23/18 jeep called, couldn't duplicate the issue, filed a report w/chrysler, tested grounding, and concluded it was a "fluke in the system". asked me to pick up the car despite not making repair. "if you have issues bring it back".

Service shifter error code; car had to be towed to dealer.

Transmission sticks - after you are stopped and then apply the gas, the transmission does not properly engage and when it does, it then "launches" you. transmission does not properly downshift - you will remove your foot from the gas to start slowing down and it slows for a brief second and then surges. repaired with a computer reprogram on 5/1/18 and the problem remains. jeep is well aware of these transmission issues in these vehicles and refuses to recall or to find a repair to fix the issue. there are literally thousand of owners with the same issue who have made the issue known to jeep. i'm concerned for my safety when i drive the vehicle. i have owned the vehicle since september 2017 and it only has 4150 miles. i have filed a concern with jeep corporate and there is nothing that they can do for me.

Severe issues with jeep unexpectedly shaking while idle, and worse during acceleration as if it is going to shut off at any time. also issues with shifting. no engine lights or etc on...temp, battery, oil all in normal range. currently unresolved. purchased new, first owner

. the transmission jerks so hard at times in low gears that it feels like you are hit from the rear. shifting of trans is not smooth at low gears especially on a incline.this has happend multiple times.

Driving jeep when "service shifter" message came on dash. all lights on shifting panel between seats came on. car lost power. was able to coast off road, let sit for one minute and restarted. all was fine. was traveling on local street at 45 mph.

I bought this car brand new oct 2017. at about 20k miles, on the expressway going maybe 50 mph, the service shifter light came on for the 1st time. all lights on the shifter turned red (park, reverse, neutral & drive). a few times my ac would not run when this light is on. this is very scary when you are on the expressway. i googled the reviews and found that for the past 3/4 years majority of the jeep cherokees have this same issue. the light will go off when you cut the engine off and crank it back up. i called the dealership and took it in for an inspection. at that time the 'service shifter' light didn't come on so they said it was nothing they could do. this light has been coming on at least twice a week now. no explanation. every time i bring it in... the light is not on! there is something wrong here!!

Takata recall: service shifter alert received

Backed out of parking space into traffic lane. transmission would show shift to d, but would not engage drive train. had to disconnect both battery cables to clear electronics. after reconnecting battery cables, vehicle would engage drive train for "d", bust car running/shifting rough, engine dying and svc engine light coming on.

Per jeep service the vehicle consumes oil. without any warning light, it will just cutoff. both times we experience the issue leaving a stop sign. thankfully we were not in the middle of the intersection when it died. this is the second problem in less than a year of ownership. the first problem was a braking issue that the vehicle jumps when it you let off the breaks and push them again. the dealer did a firmware upgrade on the transmission but it still has the issue just to a lesser extent. i have a case with fca case #: 33883097 they are not responding. they have had the car for a month.

While driving on more than several occasions a message "service shifter" is displayed on the instrument cluster display and all lights are illuminated on the transmission panel. when this occurs it can't be taken off unless the vehicle is stopped, shut off, and then restarted. this has occurred on city streets and highways. i have taken my vehicle in for service to fix the issue twice in two years. it is scheduled to go back in this coming week for additional work. the first "repair" consisted of reprogramming the computer. the second replaced the wiring harness. the third will be a bezel and another transmission accessory.

I have purchased the jeep cherokee sport 2017 about 2 and half months ago in early august 2017. as of today i have only driven 1986 miles. within these miles i have experienced a serious problem three times which were life threatening while being on the road. each occurrence has happened when i came on a full stop on expressway (san tomas expressway in santa clara county in ca) and pressing on the brake while the transmission gear is on "d" (drive). when traffic in front of me started moving then i released brake and step on the gas pedal, but the car never moved, the more i stepped on the gas, the car was not going anywhere, then i realized the transmission was functioning as being on neutral, however, the gear shift handle was on "d" in "drive" position. when i looked at my rear view mirror the car behind me was approaching very fast assuming i will move, i had to immediately got my arm out and wave to the car behind me to pass me in order to avoid getting rear ended. then i realized the transmission while in "d" position dropped to "n" functionality but the gear shift and dashboard was still showing as the car was in "d" drive position. then i immediately stopped the engine in "p" position, restarted the car and started driving away. in addition to this problem another problem just started, when the gear shift handle is in "p" position when you push button on the shift handle to move from "p" to any position i started hearing a "click" sound by the ignition key.
