Every time i drive my 2017 jeep cherokee limited my service shifter light comes on locking out any shifter controls. i was instructed in order to reset to pull over to a safe place shut off the vehicle and reset the ignition. as this happens nearly every single time i drive my vehicle it is not a feasible solution. calling chrysler i was told that there is no open issues recalls or warranty for any such issue. looking online i found thousands of reported issues of the same thing.
In january 2019, my jeep began jerking during acceleration. the dealership service department notified me that the engine needed to be replaced. during removal of the engine, the alternator was damaged and had to be replaced as well. two months later i received my vehicle back and 10 miles later the same jerk occurred. after immediately returning to the dealership and a ride along with the service technician, the technician informed me that the problem seemed to be the transmission. this repair took another two weeks. at which time the fcc representative informed me that there was nothing more they could do. the service technician even mentioned that the vehicle should be recalled and has had nothing but problems. now, three months later, the shifter light has come on upon cranking the vehicle. which is also transmission related. what will it take to recognize that this vehicle is not safe for consumers?
While driving my 2017 cherokee latitude on the interstate, a "service shfter" warning appeared and all the red lights on the shifter (p, r, n &d) all illuminated. i was about a mile away from a customer, so i pulled in and put the jeep in park. however, when i took my foot off the brake, the jeep went forward hitting my customers fence
Service shifter message appeared on screen, all lights on pnrd turned red, could not see what gear vehicle was in. had to turn car off to get message to leave.has happened numerous times now.. vehicle was in motion, on both city street and highway.

While moving on a city street, the message "service shifter" appeared on instrument panel and all gear lights on shift console illuminated red. condition remained until vehicle was stopped and turned off, then back on.
Low oil indicator never came on.the vehicle randomly shuts down, when the oil is to low without any indication light coming on that the oil is low. this has been a common problem to the point where the dealers know exactly what the issue is. my vehicle shut down without warning in the middle of the road when turning right and indicated that i needed to put it in park and restart it. i checked the oil and it was almost dry! i added oil and will be taking it into the dealership! this jeep only has 25k miles on it
Turned vehicle on, warning sounded. on dash read 'service shifter' and all lights on the shifter were lit up. vehicle was able to be driven. when re-started, the warning light disappeared.
While driving the service shifter light comes on and every light on the gear indicator lights up. dealer says they do not know. after vehicle has been turned off it went away. dealer told me we are fine to drive if it doesnt come back
I was driving home on a major street when the message service shifter popped up on my dashboard. the lights turned red on all gears. i could not see my speed or any other information. my mileage had just read 19141 i believe prior to the screen going to service shifter message. i pulled into a parking lot. i placed the gear into park. i then googled the message, make, and model to find out more information. i found forum on cargurus.com stating to turn off the vehicle and restart. i waited 10 minutes before turning on the vehicle. when i turned on the vehicle.the message disappeared and the red gear lights turned off.
Service shifter. dealership quoted me 1200.00 to repair. was told it was a shifting module in which would need to be programmed after repair. there has been numerous people with this same issue on these cars. this vehicle is less than 2 years old, and i was told this could be a major safety problem. this should be a recall without a doubt.
Service shifter message appeared on dash and all the prnd lights turned red when i started the vehicle first thing in the morning after sitting all night in the garage. turned vehicle off and on with no change. drove it 40 miles to work and when i left at the end of the day, the message was gone and all the lights were back to normal.
Service shifter message has appeared more than once. after shutting engine off and restarting all is fine for 1200-1500 miles then it comes on again.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 jeep cherokee. while driving approximately 40 mph, the service shifter error indicator illuminated. the contact had to turn off and restart the vehicle for the indicator to disappear; however, the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 23,300. the vin was not provided.
Service shifter came on one evening and went off upon shutting the vehicle down and restarting it. the next day woth no warning i was on the highway with my three kids. suddenly dash flashed 4x4, traction control, ers, auto stop all unavailable and then the transmission just stopped functioning. i was in the fast lane doing 70 mph and had no power what so ever. the rpms went up and i had no acceleration with the gas pedal down. i was able to get to the slow lane but not without causing a rift in traffic, thankfully other drivers were alert around me and let me over once i hit my flashers. the vehicle was acting as if it was stuck between gears. ot would engage in r, n and p but nothing when i put it in d. called a rollback and per dealership every code that could throw has thrown and at my expense we are starting with entire shifter assembly to the tune of $900 parts and labor. 5 days to get parts in! per service manager, service writer and the mechanic working on my car this is an issue with cherokees & better yet jeep is well aware of the issue and doesn't find a need for a recall.
2017 jeep cherokee 80k miles, after shifting from park to reverse the to drive, service shifter indicator message on screen as well as all lights on shift panel p-r-d light up red. stopped vehicle, turned off, restarted, lights went off. happened again twice while parking and once while driving on the highway at 70mph. multiple reported issues with other cherokee's experiencing same problem. no recall notice or bulletin at dealer, making me responsible for diagnostic
'service shifter' message while driving. all the lights on the shifter come on; prnd. message goes away once the vehicle is restarted. i have heard nothing but complaints about this and nothing is being done.
Shifter service light that appeared on my dash and the prnd lights all turning red while in motion. pulled over and turn car off and restart lights went out. i googled on internet is this is a common problem with this model. car has only 50k miles on it.

I had the shifter wiring harness replaced while the vehicle was under warranty approx 15 months ago. yesterday the service shifter warning came on again resulting in the vehicle becoming disabled leaving my wife and son stranded. my wife was driving on the highway at 65 mph when the lights came on. all lights on the shifter turned red and the vehicle would not accelerate causing her to pull off of the highway. my wife was unable to get the vehicle in park. after a while she was able to put the vehicle in park but she was unable to start it.
Service shifter error came on screen and all of the gear lights beside the shifter lit up. after turning vehicle off and driving again later, error disappeared.
Service shifter message appeared on driver display while red lights next to shifter prnd all light up. occurs intermittently while driving. clears itself when car is restarted, but may occur soon again. has occurred 10-20 times over past 3 months.
I bought my car brand new in may of 2017 after 48,000 miles the "service shifter" light came on and i took it into my service dept and they had to replace the shifter. i was told for this make and model replacing the shifter was not a big deal. after 56,000 miles i came in with a transmission issue. i was 600 miles from an oil change and my car was acting like it needed the oil changed and i took it in to my service dept and they did an oil consumption test on it and ended up having to replace the whole engine. now i am at 62817 miles and the "service shifter" light is back on. both times the service shifter light came on my vehicle was at rest but continued as i was driving. when they replaced my engine the vehicle would sputter and jerk as i was driving and stalled out before i could get it to the dealership.
Car has 22,000 miles on it. was driving and the car made a beep noise and a message popped up on the screen saying "service shifter" and if you look down at the shift, all of the gears are lit up red indicating that all of the shifts are on. however i have noticed it typically only comes on whenever i have my air conditioning on. i have had it do this around 17 times starting when the car hit 20,000 miles. it does not affect driving abilities.
Service shifter
Car milage at 31k. car served for 30k maintenance one week before on 5/3 and jeep informed of issue (along with others). service shifter warning light comes on the dash after the shifter illuminates all red lights on the gear shift, this happens always while in motion driving down the road on city streets and highway driving. it has happened at least 4 times and resolves itself when the car is restarted. last incident on 5-11-19 both on highway going about 70 and while driving on local road going around 30 mph. additional concerns about transmission because at times jerking feeling when accelerating or slowing down while driving.
Driving down curvy road, around 50 mph, indicator light on dash said "service shifter" while all the lights to the left of the shifter lit up. i pulled over and turned car off. after sitting a few minutes i started it up and it seemed fine. it happened one more time while finishing the drive home. there was no known cause for this to happen. i've had the car less than 2 years, 37,000 miles on it.
In aug 2018 i got a service shifter warning and all the lights at the shifter lit up. the shifter bezel and harness replacement repair was covered under warranty. then in may 2019 i got the same warning, and while driving on the interstate i suddenly lost acceleration. i was unable to accelerate over 30 mph, the vehicle was stuttering, and acting like it would shut off. i was able to drive to a nearby jeep dealership. the dealership kept the vehicle for several days. they first stated they would need to replace all the spark plugs and recommended a fuel induction cleaning service, both of which i would need to pay as they were not covered under the extended warranty. several days later the dealership contacted me to advise the repairs they had attempted had not repaired vehicle. they then performed a coil pack replacement and this was covered under the warranty. they also replaced the shifter bezel and the harness replacement, also under warranty. they did not have a rental vehicle available, so i had to pay for this out-of-pocket. the rental and the repairs ended up costing approximately $650 out of pocket. $150 will be refunded after 60 business days according to chrysler. although the spark plugs and the fuel injection cleaning did not fix the problem and are not necessary maintenance at 50,000 miles, both the dealership and chrysler warranty service stated those were maintenance repairs and would not be covered under the extended warranty i had purchased. i most likely will not buy another jeep in the future as i feel the original recommended repairs were a rip off. especially since it was a vehicle malfunction, i bought an extended warranty, and the malfunction could've been very dangerous as it easily could have caused an accident!
Service shifter notice comes on display screen sporadically. sometimes it is on initial start, sometimes while driving. all shifter position lights illuminate on shift indicator. restarting the vehicle clears message.
Was driving down the highway and service shifter came on and locked out the shifting. after shutting off the vehicle and restarting it was turned off. the second time this happened was on march 6th 2019, after shifting the vehicle from park i made it to roughly the end of the parking lot or less than 1/8 mile and again the service shifter light come on locking out the actual shifting mechanism. the second condition was my cruise was set at 66 miles an hour well trying to reduce and cancel speed cruise would not shut off until i hit the brakes hard to avoid the crash.
Service shifter light on, while moving on highway, also while turning
Service shifter message. 7,800 miles.
Service 4 wheel drive light on, vehicle stopped completley while driving. had vehicle towed to dealer.
Just bought a used 2017 jeep cherokee trailhawk 36867 miles and the service shifter light has come up on the dashboard while driving down the highway and all lights next to prnd turned red. pulled over and stopped turned off engine, put in park and the vehicle started rolling. turned engine on/off twice then got it into park then back into drive. made it home and vehicle still has all lights next to prnd on and service shifter message remains.
Service shifter notification on the dashboard while prndl lights are solid red near the transmission shifter. i have take the jeep to the dealer while it was less than a year old and they advised it needed and update and to my understanding that's what they did. now 6-8 months later the same notification appears on the dash and the lights near the shifter are solid red. when the car is turned off and restarted they go away to only come back on again after a few days or even a couple minutes. vehicle was in motion when this occurred at low and higher speeds.
While in motion on city streets and highways, "service shifter" message appears on dash as well as all shifter lights illuminate. car seems to "misfire" and jerk forward. dealer has 'repaired' 4 times and issue returns. this issue has occurred multiple times in the 1 year i have own this car (purchased new). the first incident was april of 2018 and most recently 3/20/19
I was going down the road and i heard a ding. i looked at were my mph is displayed and it was showing service shifter and all the lights where the shifter is was lite up.
No power when attempting to accelerate. this occurs sporadically when attempting to accelerate from a stop, or while motion in low and middle gears. major issue was when it would not engage transmission after starting vehicle due to failure. the system lock engaged with auto-engaged the parking break and i was unable to disengage.
Service shifter prompt came on at 26,000 miles. seems to be one of the main culprits for this model.
Was driving on the hwy about 65 mph in motion and the service shifter notice came on and all the gears to the right were lit up bright red! i just bought this car last night at 6:30! i bought this car because i was rear ended on the hwy and my other car was totalled, i am a single mom of three and just had the accident and in pain and go buy the jeep and now this service shifter light comes on the day after i buy it!!!! just my luck. this is unsafe and has caused the vehicles to lock up and 2 others with the same vehicle reported the car getting totalled due to it locking up while driving. if this happens while my kids are in the car i will ending up contacting a lawyer for a recal not being put out due to the high heavy volume of this exact problem and nothing being done about the mass production of the issue. *dt *dt
On numerous occasions when i start my vehicle the all of the lights on the shifter light up. the dash will then say the message "service shifter now". the only way to clear the message is to shut my car off and restart it. sometimes 3 or 4 times in a row. last time it happened i hooked up a tester to see if it gave a code. it gave code u0164 "lost communication with hvac control module". i shut it off and restarted and the dash said "no bus" and i had no control over my front windows, radio, touch screen or hvac. my heater was on high and so was the fan. i couldn't do anything to change it. after i shut it off for apx. 15 minutes or so it corrected itself. speeds varied from 0 mph up to 60 mph. sometimes had to drive with the message because it wouldn't go away after restarting the vehicle several times.
Was driving on the highway at 55 miles an hour and the car just shut off. lost all power. had to coast to the side of the road in heavy traffic. when i went to restart the car it said put car in park position. it was already in park. car restart after several attempts. *bf... *tr
Three times while actively moving in traffic, the vehicle has shut off without warning. the vehicle has been able to be stopped safely and placed into park. the electrical works so hazard lights have been able to be engaged. however, the vehicle fails to restart on the first few attempts. ultimately it will restart. the service rep indicated this is a known issue with these vehicles and he has seen a lot of this on this model. he noted the engine has loose tolerances to achieve the mileage rating. as a result it looses oil rapidly. and jeep implemented engine sensors to stop the engine when the oil is low. the sensors do not take into account if the vehicle is moving or at what speeds. i called the dealer about this extremely dangerous situation immediately, to which we got an answer to drop it off, they will have to look at it when they get to it. this vendor and vehicle have had over a dozen significant recalls and need to be taken off the road.
As car is being driven out a highway a warning comes on saying service shifter. pulled over restarted car and warning sometimes comes back on or goes away and returns later. one time getting out of a parking spot the shifter was in reverse and the car proceeded to move forward instead of backwards.
