Problems with 2017 Jeep Cherokee ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

On average, the 2017 Jeep Cherokee starts to “feel” problems with the ELECTRICAL SYSTEM and its various aspects after 33 539 miles.

Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Service shifter came on one evening and went off upon shutting the vehicle down and restarting it. the next day woth no warning i was on the highway with my three kids. suddenly dash flashed 4x4, traction control, ers, auto stop all unavailable and then the transmission just stopped functioning. i was in the fast lane doing 70 mph and had no power what so ever. the rpms went up and i had no acceleration with the gas pedal down. i was able to get to the slow lane but not without causing a rift in traffic, thankfully other drivers were alert around me and let me over once i hit my flashers. the vehicle was acting as if it was stuck between gears. ot would engage in r, n and p but nothing when i put it in d. called a rollback and per dealership every code that could throw has thrown and at my expense we are starting with entire shifter assembly to the tune of $900 parts and labor. 5 days to get parts in! per service manager, service writer and the mechanic working on my car this is an issue with cherokees & better yet jeep is well aware of the issue and doesn't find a need for a recall.

Service shifter indicator came on with all lights on the gear shift indicator lighting in red. after shutting the vehicle off, things returned to normal but will probably occur again based on other internet comments about this jeep problem with their wiring harness.

While driving vehicle shuts off with out warning. start is impossible for 30-45 seconds. no check engine light and no drivability issues before or after vehicle shut down. has happened twice in the last few weeks

The "service shifter" light keeps going on then off. i have taken it in and had it fixed and it happens again. looks like a lot of people are having this issue.

Service shifter message came on. all the lights on shifter are red. i was in my drive about too run an errand

Car will not start, has to be towed for service. fourth time for same problem. they installed new battery but after approx 30 days it happens again. died one morning backing out of my driveway into street would not start. towed to dealer. happened again friday morning at dealer now.

Service shifter light has come on twice now and we purchased this vehicle 5/17/19. it is a 2017 jeep cherokee trailhawk with about 42,000 miles. when this happens everything locks up. all the lights by the shifter where park, reverse, etc are those light s light up in red. you can not see the speedometer so you have no idea how fast you are going. this happen while driving of course, not safe at all!! this happened literally days after purchase.

Service shifter indicator came on with all lights on the gear shift indicator lighting in red. after shutting the vehicle off, things returned to normal but will probably occur again based on other internet comments about this jeep problem with their wiring harness.

When i first purchased my vehicle at 50,000 miles the service shifter came on, we got it fixed no problem. now i am at 56,000 miles and the service shifter has now come back on. i have read hundreds to thousands of complaints about this problem with jeep cherokees and something needs to be done about it. please recall jeep cherokees.

I was in motion on my way to taking my child to school upon a bridge ramp came to stop sign once i began to move forward after the stop i felt a jolt in the engine as it shifted into gear the service shifter light came on i continued to drive to get to safety and the service shifter light went off . i thought it was just a glitch so i drove my son to school and on returning back home the engine light came on the vehicle started jerking violently and i had to have it serviced . dutch miller in charleston wv said it was sensor number three and that it was replaced. not even two weeks later had the same issue had it repaired and just three days ago i have had it repaired again! today just 3 days after repair the service shifter light came back on . each time the same things happen, the service shifter light comes on, when it goes off the engine light comes on, the radio starts switching from my fm station to an am station for no apparent reason and the vehicle starts jerking violently while driving forcing me to go slower than speed limits on an interstate and even having to pull off the road and my fear is that it is going to cause an accident or catch on fire because i feel that it is a bad electrical system in the vehicle and the dealership i purchased the vehicle from will not assess the issue correctly. i have reached out to the makers of jeep and they are currently looking into the issue. today i am sitting at work wondering if i will even make it home in the vehicle that i am paying for that is supposed to be reliable and its not!!!

Takata recall. the service shift changer lights came on and as well as the automatic start light came kn stating it needs service. i just bought car two years ago. this is ridiculous now i have to pay 430 for something that stopped working on its own alot of people are having the same issue with jeep.

When you crank the car all the red lights come on and it beeps then states service shifter.

At 38,000 miles on our new jeep, the spark plugs are grounding out for some unexplained reason and burning a hole in the bottom of the coil packs boot. causing the plug and coil packs to burn up. i'm being told it's a manufactures part defect that jeep hasn't recognized yet. it's happened 3 different times and jeep won't do anything about it. this problem has almost cost my wife and kids their life, due to getting on the highway and the jeep starts to misfire!!!!

Service shifter notice comes on display screen sporadically. sometimes it is on initial start, sometimes while driving. all shifter position lights illuminate on shift indicator. restarting the vehicle clears message.

Shifter service light came on and dealership stated the wiring harness had to be replaced. the lights on the shifter all came on when started and the shifter was engaged.

This problem has occurred at least 4 times in a 2 week period. while driving on service streets a pinging noises goes off..the battery light a lightening bolt and shift into drive appears and lasts a few seconds. the steering wheel gets very heavy and hard to turn. the vehicle turns off! the radio continues to play. i cannot shift into park. when i try to turn the ignition it makes a screeching noise..after the second attempt it usually will restart. this is very dangerous and i am afraid to get behind the wheel of my car!

Just bought a used 2017 jeep cherokee trailhawk 36867 miles and the service shifter light has come up on the dashboard while driving down the highway and all lights next to prnd turned red. pulled over and stopped turned off engine, put in park and the vehicle started rolling. turned engine on/off twice then got it into park then back into drive. made it home and vehicle still has all lights next to prnd on and service shifter message remains.

I purchased my jeep back in april 2019 and i have been an issue with the gear shift almost every single month to current. my car will literally shut off in the middle of the road and will read "service shift gear". i have to put the car in park and turn it off, wait a couple of minutes for it to crank back up and the the message goes away. this is extremely dangerous because recently this happened to me while driving down the highway! i do not understand why this is not a recall and i have looked this issue up and there are several other people who are experiencing this same problem. i have not been able to get help from the dealerships. nothing specifically happens when the car shuts off it will just do it randomly.

For no apparent reason the "service shifter" message appears on the instrument panel blocking most other active driving information and all dots on the shifter housing become red. see pics. this has occurred countless times since we purchased the vehicle in 2018, but does not appear to affect it's driving capability. i have combed through countless jeep forums on the internet and would say it is a very common problem however with no clear solution. jeep has failed to address this ongoing issue and i am uncertain of the potential risk i am taking by continued driving of this vehicle and what effect this actually has on the vehicle and its future drivability

It began with the check engine light staying on even after oil changes, then when i would turn on the ignition key it would make a tap tap sound as though it didnt have any power, or while i would be at a complete stop while at a light it would sound as though the jeep was losing power and was going to turn off, then it did turn off on me when the light turned green. i had the battery checked by a friend he said it was reading that it has power and that the alternator is good also, then finally it left me stranded at wt work, it wouldn't turn on. i have no one to help me so i took a chance and asked a stranger to please check my car, he gave me a boost, it took 2 min to get my jeep going again..this morning at 4:30 am i wasnt able to go to work my jeep wouldn't turn on..so my neighbor took my to auto parts to buy a new battery, my jeep is 2 years old..i'm a single 52 year old female,i cant afford to be stranded or unable to get to work.

I was going down the road and i heard a ding. i looked at were my mph is displayed and it was showing service shifter and all the lights where the shifter is was lite up.

Service shifter light came on and all gears lite up with red indicator lights beside each gear being p,r,n and d. this happened while my vehicle was sitting still and in "park" in my driveway the first time, sitting in front of the church while i was dropping mom off and i don't remember if it was in park or drive at the church.

On numerous occasions when i start my vehicle the all of the lights on the shifter light up. the dash will then say the message "service shifter now". the only way to clear the message is to shut my car off and restart it. sometimes 3 or 4 times in a row. last time it happened i hooked up a tester to see if it gave a code. it gave code u0164 "lost communication with hvac control module". i shut it off and restarted and the dash said "no bus" and i had no control over my front windows, radio, touch screen or hvac. my heater was on high and so was the fan. i couldn't do anything to change it. after i shut it off for apx. 15 minutes or so it corrected itself. speeds varied from 0 mph up to 60 mph. sometimes had to drive with the message because it wouldn't go away after restarting the vehicle several times.

Was driving on the highway at 55 miles an hour and the car just shut off. lost all power. had to coast to the side of the road in heavy traffic. when i went to restart the car it said put car in park position. it was already in park. car restart after several attempts. *bf... *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that the instrument panel shorted out and various warning indicators flickered. the vehicle also stalled numerous times without warning. the cause of the failure was unknown. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the dealer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 25,000.

At 9000 miles the service shifter message came on while driving from carthage to galveston texas contacted a local dealer and was told dont place in park to take it to the dealership drove it back to marshall texas to dealership and they said they were having problems with the shifter so replaced the entire shifter.. at 40,000 miles shifter light again took to dealership in carthage and said they fixed the tcm to transmission. now at 49000 it has done it again, replacing the wiring harness from shifter to transmission. been in shop for a week still no word .the service shifter comes on evey time it is cranked.

At 9000 miles the "service shifter" light came on and took to dealer as a mechanic told me do not put in park. at 40,000 miles it came on again and was told the tcm had a recall ,,and if it happened again bring back about 3 weeks later it came on again and is still in shop. now i am worried after a mechanic told me it can lock up the transmission and cause the vehicle to crash,,, i dont feel safe driving the vehicle any lonker,, and am worried for my self and family.

Was getting a "service shifter" message on dash and brought to dealership whom replaced the shifter mechanism under warranty on july 11, 2018 at 37,891 miles. the dealership stated that it was our fault for leaving a cup in the cup holder which can short out the shifter mechanism (seems like a bad design if you cannot use a cup holder) now the problem has come up again on december 21, 2018 with 54,230 miles, making this component out of warranty. a cup was never left in the cup holder and was only used when someone was in the car. i really do not want to pay for a shifter every 6 months as long as i own the vehicle. this seems to be a common problem with this system and due to the nature of it being tied to the transmission of the car, it seems like a very high safety concern. the first time it started happening, it occurred from shifting from reverse to drive and the car had to be turned off and then on to operate. this issue became worse as time went on. this latest occurrence happened when putting the vehicle into drive before driving. turned off car and turned back on and it did not display the error message. i am sure this will occur more frequently as the days pass since i am writing this at the time of failure.

When i got in my car yesterday morning, my drivers seat was all the way back. i am the only one who drives it - it was odd that it was moved. nevertheless, i needed it to go back into position so i could drive it. the controls weren't really working so it took a bit to get it to move forward. i noted it to mention to the dealer when i take it in for an oil change this weekend. i drove to work, uneventfully. as i left work, and got into my jeep, the seat was fine. yay! i headed home. i was pouring rain. as i took a right, heard the car go "ding" saw the battery light come on and then the jeep turned off. i was driving and my car just turned off. this is the second time it has happened to me. the last time was january 2018 as i was entering i95. i turned left and heard the "ding" and off the jeep went. i had to coast to the side of the road. dangerous! i got towed to the local jeep dealer by aaa and left the car for diagnostic testing. the results, according to the dealer, was that my oil was low. the cherokee turns off the car to preserve the engine. even if you are driving the car on the highway. just. turns. off. first of all, that should not happen no matter what. the human in the car is what should be preserved, not the car itself. no car should ever just turn off. second of all, there was no indication on the dash or on the uconnect app that i was low on oil. and secondly, i was only a 300 miles over the mileage on the oil sticker on my windshield. i have had a lot of cars in my life and even the really old cars would indicate if the oil was low. this is a brand new car. why would i think the dealership would put mileage on the oil change sticker that was wrong? why would i even think that i would need to check my oil levels on a new car? and one more thing - jeeps are built tough. so why would the engine be that sensitive? so angry.

My 2017 jeep wouldn't start on september 22,23 2018 while parked in driveway. it made a sound like the battery was dead and didn't have enough juice to start. after attempting to start multiple times and trying to turn off radio and headlight. it finally turned over, but after returning home from running errands, the following morning on the 23rd it wouldn't not start until i received a jump. there was a p code on the dashboard of car. ive also experience issue with it not wanting to excellerate even with excessive amount of pressure to the gas peddle.

Jeep shift changer lights came on, all car lights in dash board, and car would not start. car isn't starting with key control, and/or push start. this has occurred on several occasions. having car towed to dealership.

Car caught on fire while driving. entire front end was in flames and burned completely. *tt *tr *bf vin is invalid updated 11/26/18*jb

Emergency brake would not release vehicle would not move forward or reverse

Throttle body and gaskets were replaced after leaving me stranded in the street. also, linkage was replaced due to service shifter warning. please see the attached document for additional details.

I bought my car 3/21/2017 and i've loved it up until the recent problems. since june/2019 when i make a left turn all of the lights on my gear shifter light up and a display of "service shifter" pops up and the only way to clear it is to pull over, turn the car off and start it up. at first it happened randomly, but now it more frequent. i purchased an extended warranty and they told me there is nothing wrong, but now an additional issue has started. sometimes when all the lights appear when i'm make a turn or getting on the highway even, i've almost been rear ended multiple times because now the car will just shut off!! this is scary and unsafe, but it is my only means of transportation and yes all of my regular maintenance is up to date as well.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 jeep cherokee. on several occasions, the service shifter warning indicator illuminated and the instrument panel became inoperable. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. several unknown dealers were contacted and made aware of the failure. the contact was informed that he would have to pay to have a diagnostic test performed to determine the cause of the failure. the contact declined the test. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000.

Service shifter has appeared on my dash, car makes noise that sounds like when my gas light comes on multiple times, engine turns off and won't turn on unless you take key out and wait a couple minutes.

While in crude controls my jeep speeds up and past the set speed and keep on going faster

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 jeep cherokee. while driving approximately 15 mph, the battery indicator illuminated. the contact turned the vehicle off and on, and drove to white plains chrysler jeep dodge (914-946-2600, located at 70 westchester ave, white plains, ny 10601). the dealer performed an oil change, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure was not remedied. the failure mileage was approximately 14,000.

I bought this car brand new oct 2017. at about 20k miles, on the expressway going maybe 50 mph, the service shifter light came on for the 1st time. all lights on the shifter turned red (park, reverse, neutral & drive). a few times my ac would not run when this light is on. this is very scary when you are on the expressway. i googled the reviews and found that for the past 3/4 years majority of the jeep cherokees have this same issue. the light will go off when you cut the engine off and crank it back up. i called the dealership and took it in for an inspection. at that time the 'service shifter' light didn't come on so they said it was nothing they could do. this light has been coming on at least twice a week now. no explanation. every time i bring it in... the light is not on! there is something wrong here!!

I have had an issue with my service shifter light being on. a few months ago it came on and i turned off the car and it went off. then later it came on and has stayed on for several months now. i took it too the dealership and they advised me there was nothing they could do for it. i have seen this same issue with many other jeeps and hundreds of complaints from other owners. this issue needs to be corrected and a total recall for all vehicles experiencing this issue. it is dangerous for all these vehicles driving out there with this problem. someone could be seriously injured or even worse. please take action on this matter!

My car just shuts off for no reason for about 2 hours and when it come back on the service engine light comes on and the battery light comes on. i took it to the dealer they said the alternator and battery died. also the key throb won't come out the ignition i only had the car for 4 months i am the first owner so i don't know how that's happening.
