Problems with 2017 Jeep Cherokee ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

On average, the 2017 Jeep Cherokee starts to “feel” problems with the ELECTRICAL SYSTEM and its various aspects after 33 539 miles.

Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2017 Jeep Cherokee

While driving i got a 'service shifter ' message and all the lights on my shifter were lit up. i pulled over turned the car off and it went away. it happend again after my oil change at the dealership. it goes away after i restart the car but seems to be a safety problem but the dealership didn't think so. no message or lights after i restart but it has happened more than once.

2017 jeep cherokee service shifter light started coming on randomly at 28,000 miles. usually turning off the car and cranking it back up would make the service shifter light go away. now after only owning the car for 2 years it is starting to shift out of gear and the service shifter light stays on most of the time. sometimes driving down the road and the shifter light will pop on out of nowhere. in the two years i've owned it i've only put 20,000 miles on it. left the dealership today to find out this part is not covered in the powertrain warranty. i've gotten one quote for $800 to replace the shifter bezel and wiring harness. this is a 2017 with only 40,000 miles. all over the internet jeep owners tell of an identical story with their jeeps. jeep needs to own up to this being a faulty part. i should not have to spend this much money to fix a faulty part. will never buy a jeep again

The service shifter warning has come on multiple times over the past year. we have taken it to the dealer and have been told they can not find anything wrong. this has happened while driving at random speeds and driving conditions. it is now happening every time the jeep is driven, sometimes before we even get to the end of the driveway.

Have owned my 2017 granite jeep cherokee latitude 3.2l v6 suv since august 2017. several times a year am instructed by on screen message to return to park and then shift to drive again. on 01/24/20, with 24,000 miles, when i started the car a service shifter message come up on my screen. it highlighted all my gear lights red and the screen was locked to service shifter. i turned the car off, waited a few seconds and the car started normally. however, in searching for the issue online found that over a hundred jeep owners had a similar experience. suv recall t52: reprogram transmission control module was resolved @ roseville jeep 05/01/18. several jeep owners said that the issue recurred even after their shifter was replaced. please escalate this issue to a recall and investigate what must be done to resolve this issue so that we are not charged for an issue the manufacturer has not been able to rectify.

This is the 2nd time my "service shifter" has come on the screen and the prnd lights all turned red. the car was driving normal and i was in a parking lot doing about 15mph. the 1st time i had just come to a red light just after leaving my home which i quickly returned. i have read about people having this issue and the car suddenly shutting down. it's very scary when this comes on.

While driving my car all of a sudden said service shifter and all of my lights on my shifter lit up as well. light would not go away, no other lights came on, however when brought to be looked at, nothing to be found on diagnostics. the light comes on frequently while driving and not driving, highway and city streets. also happens very frequently, the light isn't constantly on, but comes on sporadically, turns off when vehicle is turned off.

Car stopped on me and keeps doing it before it does it says service shifter i have contacted jeep , i have went to a dealership. but no one has helped and my 2 year old was in the car yesterday when i locked while i was driving

Several times now (7-9), message 'service shifter' appears. at same time all red dots along side the shifter illuminate (red). while to message is visible the cruise control is disabled. turning car off and restarting in most cases eliminated the message, red dots not illuminate and cruise control regained functionality. have not noticed any other electrical problems with the vehicle while the message was in view. these events always happened after the vehicle has been in motion, has not had upon initial startup.

After 19,000 the display showed 'service shifter'. the display is locked (unable to navigate to any other screen) and the red lights on the gear shift are illuminated. if the engine is turned off and back on the message and lights disappear only to reappear after another 100 miles. this happened while the vehicle was in motion on all three occasions.

Service shifter the car turn off on major highway

Service engine light is coming on. we just bought this on 12/28/2019 with 46198 miles. sifter issues. light came on as driving down the highway at normal speed.

Message "service shifter" pops up on the instrument panel, and a series of red alert lights appear next to every gear on the automatic transmission shifter lever. this problem is rampant among 2017-2018 jeep cherokees!! the dealers are unable to fix the problem! they replace the wiring harness, they replace the shifters themselves, they reset the computers ' and the problem always returns! the website https://www.cargurus.com/cars/discussion-t68742_ds990296 alone contains the stories of over 80 jeep cherokee owners who have this ongoing problem. imagine how many jeep owners across america are suffering with this issue! jeep replaced the 2014 shifters that were recalled (the ones that killed star trek actor anton yelchin in 2016) with this new shifter - and this one is just as bad! these vehicles must be recalled!!

I was driving when my car locked and told me service shifter, i immediately call jeep who told me to go the dealership near who told me they couldnt do anything because it hasn't been recalled

When starting vehicle a "service shifter" notification appears on dash and all lights by shifter illuminate, in order to reset you have to shut vehicle off and restart and then it may or may not do it next time you start vehicle, it does not seem to stop you from shifting vehicle into desired gear however is definitely something that needs to be covered under a safety recall. my jeep is currently in shop for repair, they called me and told me the bezel and wiring harness have to be replaced per a bulletin that is currently out but i have to pay $100 for my extended warranty to cover repair. this should be a recall due to the fact that it is happening to so many people and is not something that should be happening.

I left work today at 4pm made a right hand turn onto a bridge and i noticed i couldn't accelerate and two engine lights came on the dash and my car completely turned off on me and i broke down. i was stuck on a high trafficking area on a bridge when this happened. i've had my jeep for 2 years and never once had any issues and never once felt like it wasn't a safe vehicle. i don't feel safe to drive my jeep now and want it checked out completely before this happens again to me.

There is a shifter error that comes up on dashboard and all lights come up on the shifter stick while driving the car. this happened to me twice over one night while i driving and i am concerned with the safety of my vehicle. see links below. https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2017/jeep/cherokee/suv/4wd https://www.cargurus.com/cars/discussion-t68742_ds990296 https://www.cargurus.com/cars/discussion-t68742_ds947921 https://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f309/service-shifter-mil-15-diesel-3768705/

My gear shift prnd letters will randomly light up with a warning being displayed saying service shifter. the light comes on randomly while driving or while parked. the light shuts off when the car shuts off and turned back on but comes on randomly again periodically.

This vehicles had a recall on something that has to do with the transmission- the dealership claims to have corrected the issue. however, the vehicle in question is still having slipping issues. also just recently i noticed when starting my vehicle with the fob it stays on 30 secs and cuts right back off. the tire feature isn't always correct either it says i need air when i don't. i'd like to know how many other consumers have had the problem with the remote start feature..

While driving the vehicle the service 4wd light came on and a day later the service shifter light came on. this is in addition to the issues ive been having with the service air bag and the seat belt light that contantly stays on.

The service shifter warning appeared and all lights on the prndm turned red. vehicle eventually started to stall out and lead to a misfire from cylinder 2

Service shift came on dash and red lights appeared next to each gear on the gear shift while driving

Our lights on shifter have all light up and screen in dash tells up service shifter while drivin,it drives fine but i am afraid that it will lock wheels on highway with my two little kids in the jeep.we have taken it in 3 times after it happens and all we are told is they have to have the jeep when shifter acts up and service shifter is on screen.also have had jeep in service about radio freezes up nothing on screen or steering wheel works and was told the same thing. i am seeing both problem we are having a lot of people are dealing with too.i have called jeep customer care and was told the same thing and was told the service manager said maybe i need to take it to another dealership and jeep customer care closed the ticket on the issues.this dealership is larry h miller in utah.i have 6000 miles left on warranty and i am feeling that the dealship doesn't care to fix the problems. it happened at roy, utah.

When starting or driving the car, the service shifter among many other warnings come on and the car does not function normally after that. it is very sluggish and jerks while accelerating. this has happened while stationary and while in motion. multiple trips to dealerships and two years later the problem is still happening. i know of many people that are having this issue and the manufactures are doing nothing about it. my family and i do not feel safe in this jeep.

Service shifter light comes on while drive . happens at any speed and on any type of road. has been an ongoing problem for several months, happening more frequently lately. about 3-4 times a week.

I brought a 2016 jeep cherokee in july 2017. i was having issues with the car the first month i brought it. vehicle loses power while driving, engine shuts down, steering locks and the dash lights up with a message that says put vehicle and "park" and then select desired gear.this issues has happened twice once i was at an intersection and the second time i was on the freeway. this has happened 3 times in the last month. this is dangerous and scary as this could have caused a collision. i keep my vehicle up to date on maintenance/service. it doesn't make sense that i am paying a car payment, have less than 62,000 miles on a less than 3 year old vehicle, and having these kind of safety concerns. . today, my car died with no warning on a busy road, gives me approximately 10 seconds to pull to safety before there is no speed/ability to maneuver the vehicle. it is ridiculous that the risk is so high, and the number of complaints listed on line show a serious issue with this among hundreds of vehicles by jeep and nothing. the dealerships/service continue to make comments like "we were unable to replicate the issue". to be specific: driving at about 25 miles per hour, straight following a right turn. . . . lost power. lights went on the dash, message above appeared. it took two tries to restart to get me out of the middle of the road.i had the car towed to the dealer and they had no explanation for me both times this happened. as soon as they would connect it to diagnose they said the codes would clear and the car was working. its a waste of money because im going to get the same answer. i just dont know what to do now. this car has but my children and my life in danger. chrystler and jeep will not acknowledge the fact they have a major issue with their jeeps engine. i guess jeep will resolved this issue when someone get in an accident or die.

I keep getting a service shifter warning while driving my jeep. all the lights for the shifter light up (d,n,r and p). i have to pull over and restart the car off to dismiss the warnings.

2017 jeep cherokee started and placed in drive or reverse. all shifter lights come on and dashboard displays message "service shifter" and transmission is locked out. have to shut down and restart vehicle to clear error message and get transmission to work. this has happened multiple times. vehicle only has 25,000 miles on it. i see on web blog that multiple owners of 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 jeep cherokees have same problem. dealers claim either never seen before (lies), or perform software update, or replace shifter and wiring harness. this does not always fix the problem.

Service shifter warning keeps coming on even after being taken to dealership. all lights on the gear shift turn red and stay on. while this is happening there appears to be a misfire in one of the gears.

I have 2 2017 jeep cherokees. within a few weeks, both have had the "service shifter" light come on. one was under warranty so i took in for diagnosis and repair. said was wiring harness & bezel. i took the other jeep in. same diagnosis, but wanted $107 for diagnosis and more than $300 to fix.after researching this problem i have seen that many, many jeeps have this issue (see carguru.com for some instances). from this research, i have also learned that it's possibly a safety issue with this problem. my husband and i were just driving down the road, and the display for service shifter came on. no previous issues. i was truly scared to drive the vehicle after that!the fact that no recall has been issued is incredible! it's going to cause an accident! and the fact that a lot of jeeps have the similar problem leads me to believe that there is a manufacturer defect of these jeeps. some drivers who have experienced this have lost control of their steering and the cars cant be put in park. the vin number for my jeep with the same problem is [xxx] 4x4, the dates and mileage and speed of travel has been estimated as my husband cant remember the exact dates, readings, etc. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Car with just over 20k miles and a "service shifter" message appeared. all the lights on the console are lighted up (pnrd and +-). shift pattern was odd the day before.

While in motion the service shifter light came on and gear shift lights are all red,p,r,n,d - i pulled over shut of car and turned back on and message and lights went away

My jeep completely shut down while i was driving. i was approximately 1/2 mile from home, made a left turn and everything shut down. i was driving approximately 32mph. it did restart after about 15 minutes and i quickly drove back home and have not driven it since.

'check shifter' light came on and all lights on my shifter lit up as well. car shifts very hard as well !

Bezel and shifter harness malfunction which is dangerous and numerous complaints on internet. dealer ordered parts. $456. this needs to be a recall.

This first started back in september 2019 turned the car on and the 'service shift' light came on. followed by the check air bags. i turned it off and back on again, and it was gone.then about a week later, the same thing happened - then a few days after that, my engine light came on. also happend while i was driving down the freeway.

The 'service shifter' warning light comes on and the steering locks up. this has happened once before and the shifter control module and wiring harness was replaced. it has been about 10 months since that service. chrysler has a warning noted but it's not a recall.

Service shifter warning light came on. dealer diagnosed a bezel kitshift and wiring shift needed to be replaced. parts are on a one month backorder indicating huge demand for parts. surprised it was not recalled.

'service shifter' message as well as 4wd system unavailable' all lights on shifter illuminate as well.

The "service shifter" light is randomly coming on - sometimes in park and sometimes when driving. when the warning comes on while driving i can not see my speed or speedometer. shutting off the vehicle and restarting it make the issue go away - until the next time it comes on. this has happened about 5 times in the last 2-3 weeks. i looked this up and it seems to be a widespread issue with 2016-2017 jeep cherokees.

Today was the second time this has happened. i get into my car and turn it on and all the lights on my shifter are lit up red and the service shifter display comes on. i turn off my car and restart it and the lights go off. this happened once before when i got i to my vehicle to start it.

The dash lighted up with the shifter service light and then all lights left of the shifter turned on ( p,n,d). it has happened three times so far while the car is heading down the road. each time we pull over and turn the car off, then when we turn the car on it goes away; afraid that this will affect car performance sooner or later. got on internet and found out that this was a common problem being experienced by many jeep cherokee owners. it is an extreme safety issue that needs to be addressed.

Service shifter message appeared on screen, all lights on pnrd turned red, could not see what gear vehicle was in. had to turn car off to get message to leave.has happened numerous times now.. vehicle was in motion, on both city street and highway.

My vehicle is 2 years old, it has just popped up with a "service shifter" message. it is not able to be rebooted. also, when the computer is tested nothing pops up to fix. very frustrating and seems like there is a lot of similar cases.

The "service shifter" warning light has appeared twice in two days. all the lights come on next to the shifter making it impossible to tell what the vehicle is shifted into. also, this "service shifter" light stays on until you restart the vehicle, making it impossible to see any other gauges while this warning is present. the vehicle is 2 years old and has less than 32,000 miles on it. i have found many similar posts online with this same issue, and no recall has been declared for correcting this.

Windshield cracking after taking no physical damage and parked. service shifter light on at 18,000 miles when started. transmission shifts rough 1st-3rd gear. engine has also randomly shut off when started and will not start back up.

Car has been in shop numerous time shifter service 3 times alternator engine 4 times, new tires needed at 20,000 miles etc. stops working shuts off numerous times on highway in motion!!!

Driving to work this morning, turn into a busy road and my lights started flashing on the dash and said that you can't shift gears while in motion.. obviously i hadn't done that.. took 3 mins just to get the car to turn off since everything was locked up.. let it sit once off, didn't want to start.. did it again and finally it started and the lights were no longer lit up! do the recall already! obviously with all the other complaints it's a jeep issue, not an operator issue..

While driving (45-50 mph) dashboard notice states "service shifter" and the indicator lights on the shifter (p,r,n,d) are all lite up. had to stop, shut vehicle off and then restart. at this point all lights and notice was removed. the incident occurred 3 times within the same day (at various speeds from 5 mph to 60 mph). reported information indicates a wire harness is faulty at the shifter point. additionally, the jeep is loosing power, lights come on and the vehicle stalls. after shutting off the vehicle it can be restarted, but an indicator noise alerts to something not working correctly.

Service shifter automatically popped on while driving on a public street. went home was able to reverse and park . turned off car let it sit for 2-3 mins and it no longer popped on. dont think it's under warranty

First my air bag light came on and said service air bag system. next the seat belt light is on and dings when someone is in the passenger seat even the the seat belt buckled. now my tpms light is on without any issues with the air in the tires. this is an ongoing issue they cant resolve.
