We have classified the 977 complaints from 2014 Jeep Cherokee about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Alittle over 50k miles and 4 wheel drive light comes on and off while driving.. transmission and car was acting up, shut off while driving crossing a bridge to new jersey. took in for service was tcm in the transmission apparently covered with 16 days left on warranty.
The car will begin to hesitate and then the transmission will go into a neutral state, but the lights will not show that it is in neutral. the car will roll forward or backward depending on where you are. you cannot shift. it's very dangerous. turning the engine off and on, several times, while waiting each time clears the problem. jeep can not reproduce this it so they will not fix it.
I bought my 2014 jeep cherokee oct.2016 i noticed when i would come to a stop or pull out it would stay stuck in the gear and then all of a sudden it like kicked into the gear with a jerk. i took it back to the service department and they told me there wasn't anything wrong. well, it has never stopped and has gotten worse. what upsets me that there was a recall on this jeep july 12, 2016 nhtsa campaign number: 16v529000 transmission may shift unexpectedly to neutral if the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there is an increased risk of a crash. what makes it worse the dealership was unaware of this when they sold it or when i brought it back?? friday i left work at 6 am i drive an hour i drive on busy highways my jeep suddenly lost power on a dbl lane road with cars behind me and to the left, i am thankful i was on the right side that i could drift over to the side, but the snow that was packed along the guard rails still left me 1/2 in the lane flashing something about my transmission. thank god i was not on pennsylvania, interstate 70 when this happened because it would have been a major catastrophe with multiple vehicles and tractor trailers. i call the dealership where it was bought told him what had happened ...i got an appointment in about 2 weeks this jeep is unsafe!!!! plus there are other issues with it.
While stop at a light the jeep stalled out with check engine light, parking gear light, and road hazard light came on. then when i put it in park and back in gear it jerked badly as if the engine came out and bunny hop as it took off like some one learning to drive a standard. some times while driving it roughly shifts into 2nd. and it stalled once on a major highway which is dangerous.

The transmission gets kinda hecktick when you first take the car out of gear. when in drive and at a stop it seem to hop in to gear at an odd rate to where it makes the car jerk. i've taken the car to the dealer several times and get the same response from the personnel 'it's just learning your driving habits' they say. 'it will go away in its own' they add. but no one seems to know why the 9speed transmission in this car is so crazy
Transmission problems and stalling after stop. first incident 2/4 - gas filled pulled out to traffic, while waiting in intersection to turn left vehicle shut down. multiple transmission issues - hard shift after service on 2/2 from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. multiple reports of issues with this transmission. reading multiple reports of issues with this transmission - no fix. complete safety issue if reports showing shut down while driving on freeway.
We purchased this from a dealer and a few daya agyer taking it. it started shifting very very hard. also when you pit into gear sometimes it throws itself into park.
While driving a transmission alert triggered causing the car to lose power, i was able to pull to the side of the road. shutting off the car and restarting allowed me to regain power and drive home. i will be bringing it to the dealer for the 6th plus time for simalar transmissions issues over the life of this car. a permenant fix has not been found at this point all previous dealer interactions have been flashing the software. this seems to be a temporary fix and obviously losing power while driving is a serious danger. this seems to be a wide spread issue not just affecting my vehicle.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 jeep cherokee. while driving 15 mph, the transmission slipped out of gear. the contact turned off the engine and waited a few minutes. when the vehicle was restarted and shifted into drive, the vehicle jerked violently and accelerated. afterwards, the transmission failed and the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was towed to the contact's home. the contact's personal mechanic came to the contact's home and diagnosed that transmission fluid leaked out and the vehicle had a hard shift. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer and dealer were not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 95,400.
As i was accelerating out of a corner, i lost total power in the drive train. i was not able to accelerate at all, its as if the neutral was switched on by itself. all my lights on the gear shifter lit up. my dash displayed a message something along the lines of that i have to put the car in neutral or park, press the brake and change the gear back to drive. as this happened, i was almost hit from behind by the driver driving behind me. i pulled over to the shoulder and put the car in neutral, pressed the brake, and put the car back in drive and nothing happened. i tried it again but this time i put it in park and still nothing. so i put the car in park and turned off the ignition. i waiting about 10 seconds and tried starting my car which it would not start after my second try it turn on put my gear and it seemed the transmission was been ripped off the frame. this is the second time in less than a month and both times my kids were in the viechle!
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 jeep cherokee. while driving 32 mph, the vehicle would downshift and was difficult to shift back into gear. also, the rpms accelerated and the four wheel drive service warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to capital chrysler dodge jeep ram of indian trail (8461, 5501 w hwy 74, monroe, nc 28110, (704) 220-4370) where the power transfer unit was repaired. the manufacturer was notified, but was not able to assist. the failure mileage was 99,000.
Extremely hard and ruff shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. it doesn't matter if its a hard acceleration or a soft acceleration, in a turn or straight line. took it into jeep dealer and they told us it was just a leak and that the transmission needed to be re calibrated. it immediately got worse. it feels like the transmission/engine is going to rip itself out of the car. we called them multiple times to report the issue was worse than before and we were told it needs to "lean the way we drive" and "adapt". we knew this was a half truth and took it back. apparently the problem is so bad the transmission mounts are about to break. the problem is as bad as ever, the dealer refuses to acknowledge the issue. please create a new recall as this issue is causing accidents. i was accelerating from a stop and the car jerked so hard when shifting gears i literally hit the median trying to avoid the car in front of me.
In january i was driving on 391s (highway) and the dash lit up with the engine light, break light, oil light. a message appeared stating "service transmission. restart in park with vehicle at zero speed" the gear shift started blinking while it was in drive, i pulled over and when i tried to park a loud clunky sound was made and the vehicle jolted forward (same would occur when shifting in reverse). jeep serviced it stating it was recalls and it was fine. in may while on 91s (highway) the car did the exact same thing again. jeep serviced it stating it was again fine. i complained stating a car with under 50k miles should not have this issue and eventually they told me if it happened again they would replace the transmission. in august (this current month) it occured again on 91n(highway). same exact thing, and jeep again serviced the vehicle stating it was more recalls and it was fine. i complained multiple times stating they had told me they would replace the transmission and they said that the dealer stated it was safe to drive and they would not do that. it has 52k miles and i have had transmission problems now 3 times on a highway within the last 8 months. beyond a safety concern and i can not say enough how scared i am to continue driving it. i have been lucky not to cause or be in an accident so many times but why should i continue to risk it. i went to park the car yesterday and while in reverse it jolted forward about two feet before starting to go backwards. it has continuous problems driving where it feels like the vehicle is shifting gears and jolts foward. (its an automatic).
For the past year, the "service shifter" warning appears while i'm driving. to remove the alert, i've simply had to restart the engine and it clears out. i don't feel any differences to the way the car drives, so i'm assuming this is an electronic or sensor based alert. taking it to the dealer, they want an astronomical amount of money to get this fixed. most dealership do not know what is causing this and don't have information regarding the issue. i am requesting that an investigation is conducted regarding the root cause for this issue. according to the forums, this is happening to many different models of jeeps ranging from 2014 and newer.
Car stalled several times while moving when engine is cold this happened several times while turning and again when not turning, on city streets. 4 headlights blew within 7 days while both moving and while stationary. hard shift between 2nd and 3rd and 3rd and 4th gears while moving on highway and city streets.
Vehicle has been a constant headache. purchased aug 21, 2018. december something broke, ended up being a transfer case shattered. damaging our radiator. a week after picking up i still felt the vehicle was off and tried to return to dealer, they didn't have another trailhawk and said they would call me when they did. a few months gone by of hearing nothing. we did a tire rotation and noticed a huge difference in wear. obviously the front end hasnt been right for months as ai originally complained about. scheduled the vehicle in for service again to find it needs a wheel bearing replacement. received the vehicle back and the notice the passenger rear is still making a lot of noise, enough you can hear over the radio, and the steering feels tight and pulls to the left.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 jeep cherokee. while driving 30 mph, the vehicle's gear shifted into park without warning. the contact attempted to shift the gear from park, but the vehicle did not move. when the contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, it resumed normal operation. the dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 182,000.
Since purchasing this vehicle new in december 2014 it has been back to the dealer for service first time for a transmission control module and power train control module software update to correct hard shifts in 9 speed transmission since that initial recall this vehicle has been back to the dealer 4 additional times to correct the same issue. at times the shift is so hard it feels as if is have been rear ended. as of today the issue still exists, most recent dealer visit was 12/11/18. hard shift occurs while in motion on both city streets and highway driving dealer repair invoices are available if needed. incidents have occurred over the past 4 years. 12/14'12/18
While driving 45 mph on a main road, my vehicle engine lost power in the middle on an intersection and i was almost t boned, 6 days after i financed it. my vechile shifts really hard and i do not feel safe when driving it. i have read that this has to do with the 9 speed transmission and i am afraid the transmission will completely go out if i continue to drive it like described. i also just had to replace the fuel pump and evap system which caused the vechiles engine to shut off and lose power steering and locked the brakes. it would be very helpful if this issue got fixed. i don't even want to drive this vechile anymore, it's unsafe for me, for children, and for other drivers on the road around me.
Vehicles nine speed automatic transmission does not go to first gear upon making a complete stop. the transmission goes automatically to third gear or second gear. this results in the transmission starting from a stop from third gear (unless manually downshifted) reducing power and can result in a slow take-off, increasing risk of a collision or the vehicle rolling back into vehicles behind the car. i have had several close calls because of this. ninth gear never engages, this has to result in lowered fuel economy and reduced engine and transmission life as does starting from third gear. i believe the transmission to be defective and have read of numerous complaints from other customers of these exact same problems. the vehicle has received re-programming on all recalls and now jeep customer service states this is "normal" and "no defect" thus, no repair necessary and not covered by warranty. vehicle was advertised and sold to me as a "nine speed automatic transmission" in effect, jeep deceived customers selling them an eight speed semi-automatic transmission. email chain attached.
2 nd. time in less than 3 months. pulling out onto major highway when it stalls. flash ing service transmission, place in park and restart. will not restart . called for tow truck like fca told me to do after the 1 st. time.. vehicle has 27, 585 miles. jeep is at the dealership and did not hear from them today and it has been there for 3 days including the weekend. no offer of a loaner, fca customer service did ask if i was offered one, but as usual i have not heard back
Transmission jumps going into 3 gear, cant completely fill the car with gas because my transmission light comes and states to "service transmission". slow take off, took to dealership with the check engine light on and found no problems. took to auto zone and they found a code stating that it was a throttle body position sensor. please lets find a solution to resolve the issue.
Service transmission and engine light comes on.while driving. seems to occur when driving longer distances/highway. this has happened three times within the past 2-3 months. ihave brought back to dealer in western ma and southeastern ma. neither can find anything wrong. car will not go above 60 and will not accelerate, reading that in some cases the car will stop. this is concerning where driving on bust highway. dealers have not been able to repair.
The vehicle is sluggish along with making noises when automatically shifting gears when driving between 20 and 50 mph
This vehicle has had numerous occasions of the transmission slipping, jerking, acting as if it is going to completely stall. today i had the service transmission light come on and it was hard to get it to go up a hill. coming from a complete stop, it barely would go. very unsafe. very scary situation with my kids in the backseat. appx 2 months ago, it did the same thing and the dealership diagnosed and fixed the issue. it obviously did not get resolved. appx 8 months ago, i was pulling out of a shopping center when all my lights came on and my car would not go. not forward, not in reverse. again, very scary. i turned the car off, and when i turned it back on it was ok. i called the dealership and they told me unless they physically see if happen there isn't much they can do. so i didn't see a need to go through all the trouble of taking it in with that response. in august of this year, we were driving on vacation when the check transmission light came on and we couldn't accelerate again, it would barely go. we drove very slowly and again, it put us in a very dangerous situation. i can think of several other times this has happened but this is the gist of it. this car is not safe. it is going to get someone seriously hurt or killed. i am scared every time i come from a stop thinking it will stall on me.
The car stopped. i couldn't restart it. a light came on and said transmission service. after a few tries i could restart it. this happened twice. first time i thought i did something wrong. it happened again yesterday.
May 17, 2019 national highway traffic safety administration 1200 new jersey avenue se west building washington dc 20590 to whom it may concern; i am writing to inform you of a very dangerous condition that exists concerning my 2014 jeep cherokee and many others, some of which can be found at this link: http://www.carproblemzoo.com/jeep/cherokee/2014/automatic-transmission-control-module-problems.php my transmission control module malfunctioned on nov. 13, 2018. my vehicle quit running while i was driving at a fairly slow speed and slightly uphill about a block from my home. i managed to start it again and drive to my home but it ran very badly and i wasn't sure that i would make it. the words: 'service transmission' appeared on the instrument display. i had it towed to the dealer. the dealer's repair invoice (attached) lists, ' found code p1ddd-). needs tcm and pcm update per sb 21-025-18'. on may 14, 2019, just 5 months after the first incident the same malfunction happened again. the vehicle stalled in the middle of a very busy intersection. it was able to be restarted and driven with much difficulty a few blocks to be out of harms way until a tow truck could again deliver it to the dealer. this time the dealer replaced the transmission control module for $968.35. (repair invoice attached). how long will this one last? we won't know because we are trading this vehicle in. we do not trust it to drive it any longer. how many more are out there? see the link. this is a very dangerous condition. someone is going to be killed or badly hurt if they haven't already. i urge you to do what you can to effect a recall of these vehicles with these faulty parts. *js
Previously had 2 separate recalls regarding the tcm (transmission control module), both we're immediately remedied at the dealer. however, at 111,000 miles my 'check engine' came on and my transmission began acting funny. prior to taking back to the dealer i stopped at the local autozone and had them identify the code that triggered my 'check engine' light. the tcm was not accepting the data correctly, meaning the tcm needed re-programmed or replaced. due to my vehicle being 11,000 miles out of warranty, the dealer refused to correct the problem, even though this was clearly a jeep problem, and not a user problem. i have never done any towing and all of my miles are highway miles. i researched this issue and this is, by far, the most common complaint for this particular year and make. i feel since it is a 'jeep' issue, it should have been corrected.
My jeep cherokee keeps repeating the same problems. this has been going on for more than a year. sometimes i am terrified to drive because i do not know what is going to happen. today and on other days, the jeep has cut off on me a few times while in motion on a city street and sometimes when turning. the vehicle slams into gear when driving sometimes and feels like i am getting hit in the rear of the car. it is very dangerous because you don't know when it is going to happen. today, the jeep almost caused an accident when it just stopped on its own. additionally, it often shifts gears erratically and very rough, even jerking at times. the dealership said they did a software update but this did not resolve the issue. i have taken to the dealer at least three times about this issue and i keep getting stalled saying either come back in 500 miles so the can do an oil consumption test or that they cannot duplicate the issue. each time i take it in they say the did a software update or an oil change. the problem remains.
Transmission started acting up feels like slipping and popping in and out of gear
After transmission recall repair, engine replaced due transmission recall repair 3rd time, vehicle idles rough when in neutral, check engine light came on and jeep died. the vehicle started after a moment and the check engine light went off. still having same issues after transmission repaired and a new engine due to the dealership resetting the computer instead of repairing the transmission. so new engine and repaired transmission, still having issues. constant issue with the jeep idling roughly, sometimes not starting or stalling in traffic on the highway and city streets.
From day 1 this 2014 jeep trailhawk in transmission has acted very weird..step on the accelerator and the engine spins, makes a huge bang and then slams into gear..this is usually when accelerating up slight inclines, hills or into my uphill driveway. the daily challenge is trying to avoid the jeep shooting thru my garage door as i pull in my driveway. also, does not shift properly..long hesitations between 2nd & 3rd while up-shifting..long delays in downshifting when instant acceleration is needed..very dangerous on the highway. 1st transmission incident - turned right into a very busy intersection, immediately a loud bang (like it popped out of gear) and every light on the dash started flashing and ringing with service transmission immediately visible..the vehicle had no acceleration (engine was running) and my foot was on the floor and just missed getting hit from behind as it coasted to a stop. after sitting in the middle of the intersection for 5 minutes with the vehicle off, started it up and most of the lights went off and it went back in gear but was in limp mode. the dealership took 1 week with the vehicle and everything was allegedly fixed with a wiring harness recall. all the original problems are still present except the lights on the dash are not on any more. 2nd transmission incident - turned left into a very busy, uphill intersection, the vehicle had no acceleration (engine was spinning) and my foot was pushing accelerator but wouldn't go anywhere. slammed on the brakes to avoid getting t-boned by a truck coming down the hill and instead got rear ended and hit from behind. after being in the farrish jeep chrysler collision center for a week getting repaired it was returned to the farrish service center where no problems were found! but they reloaded software and said it would need to relearn my driving habits. all the problems are still present today!
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 jeep cherokee. while driving approximately 5 mph, the vehicle did not move without warning. the vehicle was towed to big m chrysler dodge jeep ram (859-885-3367, located at 1010 elizabeth st, nicholasville, ky 40356) where the technician updated the computer system, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the contact later received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 19v447000 (power train) and took the vehicle to the same dealer who once again reprogrammed the transmission control module. the vehicle was repaired; however, the contact did not beleive the failure was remedied. the failure mileage was 55,000.
I was stopped at a light. when i depressed the accelerator, warning lights flashed on my dash, the engine stalled and a message to "shift to p then desired gear". car was hard to start afterwards, issue happened 3 more times on the way back home (less than 1 mile). car has been brought to mechanic for diagnostic testing. i did research online and this appears to be a known issue with the transmission. hopefully will still be covered under warranty.
I was in the turning lane to turn into a grocery store and when i accelerated to turn my jeep accelerated then the check engine light came on the service transmission light, traction control light, service parking brake light, there were several lights that came on and my jeep was still running but stopped accelerating as i was turning into the store on a busy 4 lane road and i was pushing the gas but the vehicle would not move i coasted into the start of the parking lot where it was now telling me to shift my car into park as i did then shifted back to drive and tried to finish pulling into the store parking lot and still nothing. so i put the vehicle into park shut it off sat for a min turned it back on placed it back in drive the check engine light was still on so i drove it to the nearest auto zone to get the code checked because it was a sunday (today 10/7/18) and the dealer ship is closed. they were unable to find a code and once the jeep was turned back on all lights were off. i drove it home and parked it and i am taking it to the deal ship tomorrow. 2 weeks ago thursday sept 27th my car stalled and shut off at a stop light while taking my kids to school the morning after filling my car with gas. it started back up immediately then shook like it may die again then nothing. no light indicators at all came on during that incident so i figured it could have been bad gas and thought nothing of it since i didn't have any other trouble til today. my children were with me both times and we got lucky this incident that happened today sunday oct 7th 2018 we did not get hit because i barely made it into the parking.
When driving, engine will randomly shut off and display will show "shift to p then to desired gear". at one time it also displayed "battery low voltage" again, this happens randomly in our subdivision after accelerating from a complete stop or turning.
It vibrates it revs up when in gear it shakes code u11c2,u0001000,u04200,u010100,u000288,u012100. *tr
Shifting hard through the gears. sometimes not shifting in the correct order. surging or lurching forward when shifting. going up hills (20mph) transmission will stay in a higher gear resulting in low power. starting at a stop light transmission will not go into gear.
Engine runs rough and it studded under low speeds
Taka recall 9 speed gearbox rough shifting and cutting off and shutting off engine while driving while on the highway or in city road
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that the vehicle functioned abnormally. the vehicle jerked forward, the rpms raced, and the vehicle failed to shift from park into other gears intermittently. the vehicle had to be towed more than once to an independent mechanic. the mechanic replaced the driveshaft under warranty, but the failures recurred. the vehicle was towed to tuttle-click chrysler jeep dodge ram (3840 auto center drive, irvine, ca 92618, 949-472-7400). the dealer replaced the wheel speed sensor and the driveshaft again, but the failures recurred shortly afterwards. the vehicle was towed by the contact and rendered unable to be driven. the manufacturer was notified of the failures and offered to trade in the vehicle. the approxiamte failure mileage was 43,989.
When refueling the vehicle would shut off prematurely as if it was full after on 1-2 tenths of a gallon. to fill up the tank took about 10 minutes because of this malfunctioning. soon after this the transmission started to default and shift to neutral which is a bad thing when crossing multiple lanes of oncoming traffic. what i thought was safe i soon learned was a serious risk to others as well as myself. this started happening more frequently and a solution was never found. the vehicle would work fine for a few weeks and then the vicious cycle of the ongoing issue of defaulting to neutral while in traffic would occur. just the other day the diagnosis "post warranty" identified that the vapor canister and fuel pump was the issue. earlier i was told that replacing the battery solved the transmission problem, which wasn't to be. replacing the vapor canister, and fuel pump cost $1292.45 and i've only driven my vehicle from the dealership to the garage.
My wife was driving the car on the highway and suddenly lost power and began slowing down. fortunately no accident happened. the dashboard showed that it had transmision problems. when we bought the car we mentioned the sales person that we felt that the transmission wasn't working good but he answered was that this was something normal. the dealer fixed the break booster about a year ago but the car still shows a low break. this happened when my wife was driving the car and the car suddenly stoped in the middle of the street.
Approx a year ago-purchased 2014 jeep lattitude from dealer. on test drive felt hesitation in shifting. 1-2-3- gear- seller made note to check problem.took following day. in a day or so again noticed problem. made appointment. needed software update-now ok. test drive 3-5 miles. next day-same problem. mechanic noticed problem. needed trans replaced. trans for 2014 & 2015 jeep is a 9-nine speed trans. week later replaced with same type of 9 speed trans. picked up after serviced--within 10 minutes same prob.back to dealer-mechanic checked--could not duplicate problem--said runs like a 9 speed should. driiver is problem. not used to the operation/feel of a 9 speed. jeep slips gears, hesitation-safety concern-no pickup when from a stop or changing lanes on the roadway. did some research on google--500 plus documented cases -video of this problem by well known reporter/investigator. i paid a large sum of money for a unsafe vehicle--jeep is aware of well documented issues-also problem does not show up on scanner-so its not happening. dealer not giving me a fair deal on another vehicle. black hole with no light at the end. note: difficult to continue-recently out of hospital-and shake with parkinsons
Oil filter housing assembly is leaking. you can see oil leaking out of a port while running. oil is puddling up and running down the motor. this can cause engine failure or a fire.. this vehicle was purchased certified pre owned; i am not sure if this is stil under warranty. definitely is a safety hazard also the transmission on occasion shifts really hard when moving from one gear to the next.
Transmission having problems shifting since brand new. when starting from parked position, transmission hesitates when taking off. when going down a hill, the transmission won't shift causing the rpms to become very high. (5000 + rpm). when going up a hill and vehicle needs to down shift, it has to come to a stop or does shifts in a hard, unusual manner causing a jerking motion. vehicle has been to dealership multiple times over issue and they do a 'software update' every time. this has not fixed the issue.
Car started to loose power while driving down the interstate, acted like it was going to stall, giving more gas only made the problem worse. was not able to go over 45 mph unless going down hill. had the same problem 6 months ago and was covered by warranty. took car to the dealership and this time its not under warranty.
Vehicle read "service transmission" while on interstate going approx. 60mph. two miles later all power to engine stopped. no problems with power to car, air conditioning, radio, etc. transmission would not engage consistently, but luckily i made it home. when pressing gas pedal, tachometer would not move and if it did, it would accelerate with what felt like idling power - no ability to truly accelerate.
9-speed auto transmission which mine has rough, delayed or sudden shifting or failure to shift conditions with grinding or other loud noise during shifting ' harsh engagement of gears; sudden or harsh acceleration/deceleration; sudden loss of power; premature transmission wear or failure.
