We have classified the 38 complaints from 2006 Honda Civic about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
I took my car in at the end of dec .2007 because it was revving high. dealer was unable to duplicate. problem occurred again on 01/27/08 and i immediately contacted dealer morning of 01/28. i currently have a rental. the engine was revving very high when stopped . i thought putting the car into neutral would help, but it only made it rev even higher to even as high as six. they said that they have not had any other complaints of this. it just does not seem safe. i really felt like i needed to hold my foot down on the brake hard to keep the car from charging forward. *cn
When shifting from d to r, engine begins to rev up rapidly. shifting to n, does not help-only shifting into park-stops the engine/transmission from rapidly accelerating.*cn
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, there was difficulty shifting into third gear. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the third gear syncrose would need to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified and offered to pay a portion of the repair costs along with the dealer. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 22,000 and the current mileage was 66,413.
The third gear in the 6 speed manual transmission does not fully engage under higher rpms causing grinding and a mis-shift. causes major wear on the gears and synchros. dealer refuses to acknowledge the problem and is claiming it is the drivers fault. *tr
(1) the event leading up to the failure would be while speeding up and shifting into 2nd gear and 3rd gear sometimes there is a grinding noise, and some other times it pops out of gear totally. (2) the failure that is occurring is that sometimes it pops out of gear and then there is also a grinding noise. the consequences that come with this is while driving on the highway if you speed up and your car pops out of gear it could cause you to crash. also it is causing internal problems within the car. (3) honda has done nothing to fix this problem, so hopefully they will after the complaints come in. *tr
My 2006 honda civic si has problems with gears one (1) through four (4). the biggest problem is the lack of smooth shifting and erratic grinding resulting from shifting through those gears. grinding occurs when the vehicle is at a stop and the clutch is shifted from neutral to first (1). grinding also occurs when the vehicle is in motion and shifted from first (1) to second (2), second (2) to third (3), and third (3) to fourth (4). the grinding is most prevalent in the second (2) and third (3) gears, with first (1) and fourth (4) being more minimal. the grinding is also most prevalent during cold weather and/or when the car was not given time to warm up. in addition to the grinding issues of the manual transmission of my 2006 civic si, surging and jerkiness can be felt from neutral to first (1) and first (1) to second (2). notchiness can also be felt within gears one (1) through four (4). *tr
1st gear locks out on a dead stop, which means if i were on a hill, i would try to go into 1st gear, and instead of going into first, i roll back and hit whatever is behind me if i cannot catch it in time. 3rd gear kicks back and grinds, which may lead to being rear ended if the driver behind me does not notice this. *tr
Honda civic hybrid 2006 problem with random surging: i was driving on hwy 50 eastbound to sacramento, when traffic came to a standstill, then started to move again slowly. other cars would fill up the space in front of me-i could not keep a car-lengths distance between myself and the car ahead of me. i was stopped and then as traffic started moving forward, i tapped on the accelerator of my honda civic hybrid 2006, and instead of slightly moving forward, my car surged into the car in front of me at a high acceleration-i did not see the exact degree on my dash, but heard the engine revving loudly. i noticed this (to greater or lesser degrees) a handful of times after owning the car for a year and a half, but in those instances, the acceleration may not have been as great and/or i had a much safer distance between cars and i had time to put on the brakes. when this happened i thought, i bought a hybrid-lemon and honda would have to address this-but i found similar complaints online and other reports that honda would not address the issue. this may be in part as the events cannot be readily reproduced to have the issue fixed. http://www.hybridcars.com/forums/hybrid-diesel-t436p10.html i have owned 2 honda civics (non-hybrid), and i have been a satisfied honda customer until i bought this hybrid. my car is currently at the honda dealer with the damage being assessed (cannot check mileage on the car and other information to fill out all the info you want), and no one yet has called me back from honda. i am concerned about the safety issue above, and whether or not honda will address the problem. although the random acceleration-surges are uncommon occurrences, they may be deadly occurrences. however, these occurrences should be preventable, if the government would investigate. sincerely, g. melendres, md *tr
On my 06 civic si's 6speed. the third and fourth gear do not engage, when then do they popped out and are rejected. this happens more frequently when it is cold however it also dose it when warm, randomly. the geartrain seems to be very notchy overall and getting worse. i have had this problem fixed by the dealer once but the problem quickly came back. the dealer refused to fix the problem again, claiming that it was not reproducible. this is a common problem and must be fixed. there are hundreds of people in varying climates with this problem. please refer to www.8thciviv.com in the mechanical section for 200-300 more people that have the same issue. *tr
09/04/2007 driving east on i-10, smelled something burning, engine would rev up but car would not go. coasted over to shoulder (was almost struck in rear by large truck sounding his horn and locking his brakes; i could not accelerate out of his way). car would shift but would not go. had car towed to dealer. invoice stated, "found clutch disc came apart." car had only 26,232 miles on it. replaced clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. cost $1098.68. *tr
I have a honda civic 2006 (lease) this car has 2 recall one on 8/30/07 and on 11/07 but the dealer never sent me any warning, note, letter or call to notify this situation, i read that by fed law they should contact me and let me know the ricks that this issue can cause me. i called because i had a problem with my car keys code and they told about this and they said sorry because they do not know why i was not notify about this i very disappointed because that is very dangerous and i do not get notify at all, i had 3 cars with the honda all 3 are lease cars so it is not excuse that they cannot contact me also i am living t the same place for more than one year and i got my honda bill every month. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 honda civic hybrid which was purchased in november 2005. she noticed a significant decrease in the gas mileage between 10 to 15 mpg. she also stated that while driving uphill or accelerating the vehicle would lose power. there were no recalls pertaining to the failure. the failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 100,000. updated 10/26/09. *lj the consumer stated since the vehicle passed the 50,000 mile mark, it looses power when traveling up hill and/or acceleration. the dealer performed computer upgrades but to no avail. updated 10/26/09. *jb
The recent recall of honda odyssey and element models made me remember two things about the 2006 honda civic that i owned. i experienced the same braking issue on it- i would have to hold the brake pedal down pretty forcefully in order to make sure it wouldn't creep forward while stopped. it was an automatic transmission, and if stopped on an incline on a hill (at a red light or stop sign), when the brakes were released the car would move backward significantly. this didn't happen on a steep hill- i have driven several other cars on this same hill and never had a problem. it was so significant that i would have to prepare myself to accelerate immediately and with relative force to prevent the car from rolling backwards. *tr
The vehicle has a manual gearbox and the clutch pedal is very stiff to operate. this combined with a fairly long travel could require short divers to position their seat very close to the steering wheel in order to get enough leverage in their leg to fully depress the clutch pedal prior to staring the engine. the incident date is non-specific as this is an ongoing issue. i have raised my concern with the local dealer and was advised that they cannot reduce the stiffness of the clutch action or reposition the engine disconnect switch (so that the pedal does not need to be pressed to the floor). *jb
The transmission will not engage 3rd gear correctly and causes the transmission to grind and pop into neutral when you think you are in 3rd gear. this issue is dangerous and could cause a wreck. honda denies the problem but there are several petitions online about this issue. this issue is the worst when it is cold out and the car is cold. it has been doing this since the car got to about 5,000 miles. *tr
After driving 10 miles and parking, the vehicle was put into reverse. upon backing out the steering wheel locked. after this, the car was put into drive to go back into the parking space. with the vehicle in drive the car continued in reverse. the engine was then turned off and restarted 1 minute later. everything was back to normal. this occurred 11-oct-2006 and 1 previous time last month. honda has no record of this on 2006 civic. *nm
Within weeks of purchase, returned to dealership regarding excessive grinding of gears, lack of confidence in engaging gear change all when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. dealership suggested it to be break in period or that i wasn't used to a performance 6m transmission (i drive a 2003 nissan 350z 6m). next visit, resulted from more of the above, i cited website research and reference to transmission fluid not of quality. dealership did change and problem was lessened. third visit, had service tech drive vehicle and he came to conclusion that "it would get better with use", i told him that i couldn't believe that honda would accept that solution. i then drove for period of time thinking it was my skills and that it would be better when broken in, until finally, i called out of frustration and concern for my safety because the transmission was actually popping out of third gear to neutral after i felt like it was engaged, or i was having to double clutch/shift and thus, causing me serious safety concerns and near collision/rear end due to the unexpected times it would occur. this last visit to the dealership i was told that the district manager would have to drive and we'd schedule a visit when he was in town. this time they had the vehicle for two days and reported that both dm and service manager drove without any recognition of reported symptoms and nothing was done. i was told they have not had this complaint, they took some compression readings and they would keep in touch. i accepted, but visited my sales person, and expressed my concerns and suggested that i was so disappointed in this "non-typical" honda response that i sell the vehicle. the symptoms persist causing me a lack of confidence in vehicle performance and concerns for the safety of myself, other passengers and other vehicles. thus, leading me to file this complaint. *tr
2006 honda civic hybrid drops battery charge and assist suddenly, then slowly recharges, with no warning, leaving car with less power and acceleration than expected. becomes a safety hazard on freeway onramps, passing or any time you need to move fast to avoid something. car needs to be revved to 5k to get over 35mph, after that gas engine itself starts to pick up speed. mileage has dropped from 45+ to middle 30's since it started happening 2 years ago. happening at least twice a week, some times twice a day. took to honda dealer and they forced me to change the 12v battery pack at my cost, which made no difference. i happens more in summer. i cannot reproduce it at will no error codes are stored and no problem lights are turned on, so honda says there is nothing wrong. many other owners complain about the same problems in public forums: http://www.greenhybrid.com/discuss/f51/who-has-daily-battery-dumps-recalls-24632/#post225828 http://www.greenhybrid.com/discuss/f51/my-07-hch-ii-officially-declared-lemon-24744/ the car has put me on several situations where i expected a certain acceleration, and the failure to provide ima assistance did not meet that expectation, creating situations that could have ended on traffic collisions. for example, entering the freeway on a onramp with a light. if it happens then, the car may just be at barely 30mph when entering the freeway, fully revved. or making a left turn with oncoming traffic, car may move slowly from the stand still instead of producing the sharp acceleration expected to get out of harms way fast. or when passing on the freeway. on highways i just don't trust the car enough to do it, as i may not get from it what is needed to complete the maneuver before i get oncoming traffic. i'm afraid every time i need to do something like that. recalibrating happen at least a couple of times a week, some times twice a day. *tr
Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle rubbed against a curb and the axle and the steering wheel column fractured while traveling 3 mph. the contact expressed the vehicle was too low to the ground. the contact stated if the vehicle was higher to the ground, the steering and wheel axle would not have fractured.*ak
I have a 2006 honda civic si. the tranmission has had problems shifting into third gear. on many occasions the shifter has popped out of third gear while driving. i brought the car to honda with this problem. they changed some fluid and hoped it would fix it. it didn't. it's been several months since then, and the problem seems to be getting worse. i hope honda can figure out how to fix this, because it doesn't seem safe. *tr
1. problem has been occurring from the beginning. 2. in the 2006 honda civic si there is a grind going into 2nd gear at times, and also 3rd gear does not always fully engage. 3. nothing was done to correct the failure. the dealer turned a shoulder and stated they were unable to replicate the very obvious problem. *tr
Purchased a 2003 honda certified civic lx on january 28, 2006 from heritage honda of towson, 9213 harford road, baltimore, md 21234. took vehicle in for 50,000 mile service and asked service manager about automatic transmission slipping while in "drive" on an incline, causing vehicle to roll backwards. he informed me that he had a similar vehicle which also did this, that other customers had complained to him of the same condition, and that there was nothing that could be done about it. my complaint is that: the automatic transmission will not hold the vehicle on an incline when in the "drive" position. driver must engage the "park" position to hold the vehicle, or put the vehicle in "neutral" and engage the parking brake. leaving the vehicle transmission in "drive" while on a hill results in slippage (this vehicle rolls backwards while in "drive", as if in "neutral"), which presents danger of impact to the driver of this vehicle and to those drivers behind them. i strongly believe that this condition of transmission and vehicle slippage when the automatic transmission is in the "drive" position, while on an incline, constitutes a serious safety hazard to drivers of this vehicle and to other drivers directly behind it. i seek to have the transmission problem corrected, if possible. if not, i would attempt to have the manufacturer buy back the vehicle as a lemon, or to get the vehicle recalled. please advise. *jb
Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle's automatic transmission shifted too easily while driving various speeds on normal road conditions. the vehicle also rolled backwards before moving forward during acceleration on a level-driving surface.
Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle consistently rolled backwards at red lights, in between the time it took to switch pedals from braking to accelerating. the vehicle had an automatic transmission. the vehicle was not taken to a service dealer. the dealer expressed due to the lighter transmission, this was a regular problem with these vehicles. updated 9/15/2006 - *nm
