Problems with 2006 Honda Civic VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic. while driving 70 mph with the cruise control activated, the cruise control deactivated automatically twice. the contact reactivated the cruise control each time. also, the air bag warning indicator illuminated and, soon after, the air bags deployed. there were no injuries. the contact lost control of the vehicle, but then regained control and pulled off the highway. the contact inspected the vehicle and found no visible damage other than a cracked windshield. the contact was able to drive the vehicle home. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failures. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 278,000.

I would like the recalls to be done om my car due to saftey issues becaus3 i don't believe it was even done at least i know with me it hasn't and i wasn't informed and feel very unsafe in my vehicle because of what should of been fixed and hasnt

My dad has died from injuries sustained from a car accident, he told me his car 2006 honda civic accelerated on its own! the car accelerated at high rpm when he just went to accelerate. to enter the road making a left, instead the car went so fast within seconds, he lost control and his honda plowed threw a stop sign, then was finally stopped by a steel pole holding up a quick check sign! he sustained extensive chest injuries! 3 broken ribs, 2 dropped lungs, fractured sternum, fractured c4 and c7 spine injuries! he died due to a defect in the accerlaertion of the vehicle racing on its own! my dad has always kept up with recalls and has car logs and maintenance logs, etc. i hope other people never have to experience this tragic sudden death, due to a defect in manufacturer acceleration, or whatever equipment is responsible for this accident! it's a mfg defect! please address or at least make public aware this could happen to them! the consumer requested a status update. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic. the contact stated that while driving at 30 mph, the vehicle accelerated independently without any warnings. the second time the failure occurred, the vehicle crashed into a pillar. a police report was filed and no injuries were reported. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician was unable to diagnosed the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 65,000.

Honda part#: 77900-sna-a01 (methode) -or- 77900-sna-a02 (furukawa) reel assy, cable. with the failure of this part, vehicle cruise control, radio controls and srs air bags failed. the cable reel assembly is the component that makes the electrical connection between the function buttons and air bag on the steering wheel to the non-rotating steering column. the ribbon cable inside this mechanism was completely severed on the vehicle. *tr

I on a 2006 honda civic ex. yesterday i came to a stop light and applied the brakes and as i did so the car stopped and then the engine began to race and roar. i applied the brakes harder as the car began to try to jump forward into the intersection the engine raced even more and the brakes were not holding the car back so i quickly put the car in park and turned off the engine. i waited about 30 seconds and then started the car again and kept my foot on the brake. the care engine was normal this time and the engine did not race so i drove home. the next day i took my car to the honda dealership and they put it on the computer and did not find anything wrong, but when they did a visual check of the gas pedal, they found that the gas pedal had come loose from the floor mounting. they tighten this part and charged me for labor and the time on the computer (which came to $104.). they said there was a recall on this part for some of the 2006 honda civics, but that mine was not the right vin number for this recall. when i look on you website it type in my vin number and make and model, it says it is on recall and that they have a modification kit for the gas pedal that they send to the dealership to repair the car for free that is supposed to prevent this from happening again. i feel that they should have order the repair kit for my gas pedal and told me that they would service my car for free. my life or someone else's could have been at risk with this incident and possibly without this modification kit, it can happen again in the future. i would like to know how to get my car included in this recall and free installation of the modification kit as it should not be excluded since i obviously suffer the same risk as those other 2006 honda civics with the approved vin numbers. i would also like a refund on the $104. *tr

I was driving about 50 mph when my car started slowing. no matter how hard i pushed the gas pedal it wouldn't drive over 30 mph. it then started smoking, so i pulled to the side of the road and called a tow truck. the repair shop said i had a cracked engine block and that the oil probably leaked completely out in a matter of minutes. *tr

The following is the letter i sent to honda. the letter got passed around and i was told to call customer service. please help settle this matter. i want honda to notify all customers of this problem and also pay for my damages due to their negligence. on monday, march 17, around 9am, my 2006 honda civic suddenly and without warning cut out completely and had no steering. i had just taken an exit ramp, 291b towards chesapeake, virginia and miraculously made it to the shoulder of the off ramp with no power. my honda civic has only 61,000 miles on it and has been well maintained. i was fortunate to have a police car pull behind me after waiting about 20 horrifying minutes. the officer said she would park behind me because someone was going to hit me from behind. traffic was heavy and cars and trucks were flying off of i64 on to this 291b exit ramp. it was a shock to learn later that the tensioner bolt suddenly broke off and caused the water pump to lock up and tensioner and serpentine belts to be damaged. what was completely unacceptable, was to learn that certain vin numbers had the drive belt recalled to install the longer, rerouted drive belt. this obviously needed to be done on my car as well. i am shocked and upset that i was placed in a situation where there was a potentially known tragedy that could have occurred. i have been a very loyal honda customer to this point, but require that appropriate action is taken. honda should cover repairs related to their negligence and also, most importantly notify all customers promptly of this known potential disaster. i look forward to an acceptable response by march 28, 2014. I was turning into a parking space, almost completely stopped and my car accelerated suddenly on its own forcing up and over two curbs.this is the first time happening to me. *tr

When you depress the cruise control switch, it won't stay on. bad cruise control switch. others in the blogs have had this problem. honda says no recalls. *tr

I was stopped at a stop light that had just turned red (no one was in front of me). when i noticed that the light was turning yellow for the cross traffic, i let up on the brakes a little bit & maybe rolled a few inches. suddenly i felt a forward thrust & immediately depressed the brake harder & looked in my rearview mirror as it felt like a car was pushing mine, there was no car behind me. i could hear the engine revving & i had to put more pressure on the brakes but then the light had turned green so i began to accelerate. (this all happened in just a few seconds) i immediately looked at the carpet which was completely in place. i continued to drive & when i had to stop i left a lot of space from the car in front of me but i was not able to recreate the incident. it was not full throttle but enough to really scare me. yesterday i made a report to honda of america & they were going to forward the report to the larry hopkins honda dealer in burlingame where i have an appointment this friday, april 4th. i did find reports on the internet where other people have had that same thing happen & their garage could never duplicate the incident or find a cause for it so i expect my visit to be fruitless & a waste of money, but i realize that i have to do it. i will always worry as long as i drive this car that could happen again & i may not be as lucky with the outcome. i was not planning to buy another new car until 2016. *tr

Yesterday i experienced sudden acceleration when applying the brakes. i was approaching a red light going downhill at about 40 mph. i applied the brakes and the engine accelerated with the rpms jumping to 3,000. i applied full brakes and the car kept moving towards the intersection. to avoid an accident, i put the car into neutral. rpms went up to about 4,500. the car slowly stopped. when the light turned green i put it back in drive and the car stalled. i put the car in neutral and re-started it and the rpms were normal. i took it to the dealership today and they could not find the problem. surveying the internet i can see lots of other acceleration issues with the 2006 civics. the dealership was unaware of any problems. this could have caused a serious accident. *tr

2006 honda civic 4dr lx at. on two separate occasions, i have experienced sudden engine acceleration *while braking*. the first time, i was exiting a highway and had come to a stop while i waited to merge onto a thoroughfare; my engine rpm suddenly increased to 1500 or so, and i had to maintain increased pressure on the brake pedal. the other incident occurred today: i was also at a stop in a line of cars waiting to pay in order to leave a garage. i inadvertently lessened the pressure my right foot was exerting on the accelerator pedal, and the car engine started to accelerate (not just lurch forward associated with lighter brake pressure), so i had to hold down the brake pedal with a great deal of force, and the engine rpm returned to idle speed. in no way did my foot touch the accelerator in either of these instances. *tr

On two separate occasions i experienced sudden acceleration. the first time was, may 26, 2009, and the second time, january 15, 2010. when this occurred i was approaching a stop sign applying the brake traveling about 10 mph. the brake began to fade and the car started to accelerate. i quickly put the car in neutral, which caused the motor to increase in rpm and then went into ideal, which all happened in a few seconds. both times i brought the car into the honda dealership within an hour of the occurrences. both times they were unable to identify the cause. after honda checked the car out on january 15, 2010 i returned on january 26, 2010, leaving the car with them for 2 days for a more intense evaluation. again, they could not identify the problem. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 honda civic hybrid. while driving 5 mph out of the driveway, the vehicle struck a bump and it suddenly accelerated on its own. the contact lost control of the vehicle and it spun around. both the brakes and emergency brake failed. the vehicle came to a stop when it struck a muddy embankment. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. there were no injuries. the current and failure mileages were 50,000.

When going up a hill with the cruise control set, the rpms will increase in order to climb the hill whilst maintaining the same speed. once the peak of the hill is reached, though, the rpms will not return to the normal range (between 2000 and 3000). this will continue indefinitely unless i slow down below 40 mph, or shift from d to s and then back to d. while i have included oct 5th, 2007 as the incident date, that is approximately when i first noticed the issue. no doubt it has been occurring throughout the lifetime of the car, but this is when i first became aware of the problem on a long road trip. the problem persists. this is wasting a considerable amount of gas, as well as putting unneeded wear and tear on the engine and drivetrain. honda maintains that this is not triggering any error codes with the system management in the car. however, this behavior is surely not intended, and others have reported the same behavior on online message boards. *tr

I have felt for some time that as i am rolling to a stop at 10-15mph and apply the brakes that there is an increase in the rpms from 600 to 1000 or slightly more. the sudden revving is enough that i have sensed that the car could actually continue to move forward when i intend for it to stop and perhaps cause an accident. related to this, i had one instance when i was pulling into a parking space that i had to apply great force to the brake pedal and put the car in neutral to avoid running over a speed bump at the end of the space. i had initially thought i may have put my foot on the accelerator pedal by accident, but doubted that at the time, and now seriously doubt it given some other reports i have read on the web.*ak

I stopped at a crosswalk to let individuals cross and while i was stopped the engine was revving and it felt like i really needed to push down hard on the brake to keep the car from going forward.. a little scary. *nm

After backing down my driveway i put my foot on the brake and shifted from reverse to drive. the vehicle accelerated very rapidly. i kept my foot on the brake, shifted to neutral and turned off the ignition. after restarting ,the car responded normally when it was shifted into drive. fortunately, my foot was firmly on the brake so there was no property damage or personal injury. however, this greatly concerns me. i noted your website has complaints from other people that have experienced the same problem. i called honda and they indicated there were not aware of any problems of this sort. they advised me to take the car to a dealer to see if they could replicate the problem. i will do so, but the dealer and i both agree it is highly unlikely they will be able to replicate the problem. i believe my experience, as well as the experience of other persons who have contacted you, indicates there is a strong likelihood of a potentially serious safety defect that could lead to property damage and serious personal injury. *jb

Tl*- the contact stated that the 2006 honda civic ex, had acceleration problems. on 11/16/06, while driving at 5 mph in bumper to bumper traffic the vehicle accelerated without notice. the contact stated that the rpm monitor showed the vehicle was accelerating quickly. he had to hit the brakes really hard to get the vehicle to come to a stop. the contact stated that this has happened on 3 occasions. the contact called the dealership and left the vehicle with the them for 2 days. the dealership drove the vehicle, and informed the contact that they found nothing wrong with the vehicle or the acceleration problem . the contact will file a complaint with manufacturer, and will submit the case # with the hard copy. the failure mileages was 9500 , and the current mileage was 13800.*ak updated 03/30/07. *jb

I bought a 2006 honda civic lx on 02/21/06. i was at the mall on date below and went to back out of my space, when a van backed out and we hit bumpers. i was going to pull back into my spot to see the damage and when i put the car into drive, it took off like a rocket and would not stop...i had both feet on the brake trying to stop it, and it would not stop. i hit a 2006 cobalt, my car flipped over onto its side hit a 2003 chevy driving in between these two parked cars . i then drove over the cobalt and when i came to the end of these cars, my car came out of them and flew through the air over into the parking space across the parking lot. the deputy sheriff and his sergeant came to the scene of the accident and said that there was no way that honda civic could have done what it did and to drive over the cobalt without something being wrong with the accelerator pedal or the computer. i went onto honda's web site and found that honda civics were on a recall for the accelerator pedals. i called the dealership where i purchased the car and told them what happened and told them about the recall, and the new car manager told me it was for the two door civics only, and maybe i should have turned the key off when this happened. i then called the general manager at the same dealership the next day and told hmi what happened and his comment was "that was very unfortunate". i have not heard from honda since this happened. i have tried to contact honda, and they say they will call back, but never do. i don't want this car and i don't feel that i should pay for this death trap of a vehicle. i feel that it is a safety issue now. i wanted honda to know that the 4 door civic's should be on a recall also. i think honda is not going to stand up and say there's a problem. i know what i did that day, and i know that that civic could not have done what it did in that short distance without something going wrong somewhere in that car. ...

Unintended acceleration. 10 miles after a cold start-up, the car went to full throttle. i was able to hold it in place with the brakes. i turned the ignition off momentarily, but the car went back to full throttle. i then turned it off for about 15 seconds, and the car reverted to normal operation. the cruise control was "on", but not engaged. no speed had been set after the initial startup. this is a hybrid with full throttle by wire. i took the car to the selling dealer, who had no service bulletin on this fault. he said i would have to leave it until they could replicate the fault. knowing the futility of this, i declined to leave the car. the fault has not reappeared. *jb

New 2006 honda civic - major issue with the low idle (650) rpm instantly increasing to around 1000 rpm when the steering wheel is slightly turned, causing the car to jump ahead. you must have your foot firmly placed on the brake pedal at all times. if you remove your foot from the brake and turn the wheel, the car lurches forward. i believe this a safety concern and an annoyance. honda factory tech claims this how it is designed. according to dealer, other similar 06 civics have same condition. *jb

The vehicle idled in my driveway for 1-2 minutes. i backed the vehicle down the driveway. i put my foot on the brake and shifted into drive. the vehicle unexpectedly revved up to 3-4000 rpm without pressing the accelerator. as my foot was firmly on the brake, the vehicle did not move. i took the vehicle to a dealership. the dealership checked the vehicle and test drove it. they could not find a problem or replicate the incident. no repairs were made to the vehicle. *nm

The rapid, delayed deceleration that occurs with the vehicle when you let off the accelerator pedal poses a safety issue. the car has a completely non-linear, rapid, sudden deceleration approximately 1 second after letting off the accelerator. this can cause unexpected vehicle over steer, particularly when the car is driven in a spirited fashion which is its target market. *jb

Tl* i have a 2006 honda civic hybrid that numerous times now (virtually all the time), the cruise control will not slow down when instructed to slow down by pressing the decrease speed button one press at a time. usually i will have to hold it down for several seconds for it to respond. the vehicle was taken to the dealer they stated there is not failure and now the warranty has expired. the manufacture also was call and they stated there is nothing they can do. the failure mileage was 19,000. the contact requested that the complaint be written verbatim with no revisions. updated 04/22/10 *bf

Xi have owned a 2006 civic hybrid for the past year and a half. on several occasions i have noticed that a light application of the brake pedal can result in a sudden acceleration} rather than in braking. this happens intermittently, i would say approximately once a month. it seems like a malfunction in the computer system running the braking system. on one occasion last april this resulted in a minor accident. at the time i had only owned the car for a short interval and was surprised at this strange reaction of the car. since that time this problem has recurred several times. i would like to ask if you have had other reports of this problem and whether you know about it. since it is an intermittent effect it is no use taking the car to the dealership. *jb

All 2006 honda civic si models continue to accelerate for approximately 1 second(s) after closing the throttle. this programmed "rev holding" compromises the ability to safely control the car and stop it. this is a drive-by-wire issue that must be fixed. *jb

When lifting off the accelerator car continues without decelerating for more than 1 second. this can cause problems in traffic. i must anticipate my deceleration or use the brake pedal suddenly when i would not have to in another car. i believe this presents a significant risk. further when deceleration does occur it is extremely abrupt. if i am turning and i lift off the throttle the sudden deceleration and its unpredictable onset can cause lift-throttle over steer or a tightening of the line on which the car travels. in short, the car can unpredictably go not where it was pointed. *jb

Honda, on owner vehicle maintenance website, has not disclosed information about recall. this is misleading as the recall was expected to be announced by nov 16 , 2 weeks ago. recall number 05v509000. *nm
