We have classified the 27 complaints from 1998 Honda Accord about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Final gear in automatic transmission has failed which resulted in failure of transmission to go from drive to park. dealership has examined vehicle, and determined that transmission needed to be rebuilt. *ak *slc
The vehicle's transmission produced a clicking sound when shifting gears. the dealer stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. *nm the transmission made noise while the vehicle was in park. the vehicle would rattle as the vehicle was shifted. the service dealer stated that this was a common problem. *sc *jb
The car's transmission surges. we had the car in for servicing the week before and then our son lost control and crashed into a tree. he was only going 35 mph at the time and was braking at the time. we had been experiencing problems with the transmission shifting and surging. the dealer said there was a broken seal and the transmission fluid was leaking out. this accident happened 3 days after we picked the car back up from the dealer after supposed repairs. after reading other consumer complaints, maybe this is the fuel throttle linkages control and not the transmission. we don't know. after the car is repaired from the accident we are taking back to the honda dealership for more work on transmission/fuel throttle problem.*ak
Transmission slipped out of gear and vehicle jumped forward. lost control of vehicle and hit tree. *ak
First failure transmission shifting erratic @71,927mi. problem diagnosed as solenoid shift valve, second failure diagnosed as internal problem worn parts. *ak
I called american honda and was asked where i got the info from. and i told them the internet and was then asked if it was a honda site to which i said no. i was then told there was no such recall. no safety defect mentioned. *ak
Bearing going into tranmission cracked. front end made odd noise. dealer was unable to diagnose. eventually transmission fuild leaked out, requiring transmission to be replaced.*ak
The automatic transmission for my 1998 honda accord failed 2500 miles after the warranty ended. it is my understanding that transmissions do not fail this early on in the life of the vehicle. i have taken the car to many mechanics who all stated that there must be a defect in the transmission and to take it back to the dealer because they do not go out this fast. everyone but honda states that there must be a defect. the honda corporation accepts no responsibility for this and contends that there is no defect or recall. through research i have found many complaints of transmission problems for the 1998 accords especially on the nhtsa consumer complaints site. i feel that honda is ignoring/hiding customer complaints to avoid a recall on the 1998 honda accords. this is not right that the transmission went out so early on in the car's life and something needs to be done about this issue. i know that this must be going on on a larger scale probably all over the country and being ignored by the dealers.*ak

Transmission lock up converter failed, supposedly replaced with new trans. after 2 weeks new trans. loudly slips while in reverse. took car to dealer and find out they put in a re-manufactured trans. (oh, by the way...) dealer doesn't know how to fix this problem however bob springer service manager said "other hondas are having this problem too". reason for not putting in a new trans. honda doesn't have any new trans. available, yet our service advisor brett was going to charge us $3800 for a new trans. when the first transmission failed.*ak
Driving around normally, automatic transmission will clunk and jerk going into and out of 2nd gear. drive it a little harder, it yanks and bucks the car. during normal operation, when you came to a stop (when the transmission is trying to go back to 1st when decelerating), the transmission will fight the brakes and jerk the car forward. not only is this an immediate danger, but it is a degenerating problem that will eventually cause a catastrophic transmission failure, creating a safety hazard at any vehicle speed. other 1998 honda accord v6-coupe owners and even dealers have recognized this as a widespread problem with this specific component. http://honda-acura.net/forum/forum12/html/008731.html*ak
Please be advised that this has happened on multiple dates ranging from 1999-2012. i thought it was covered through nhtsa campaign id #: 98v018000 but i did not use the car enough to recognize a pattern until 2002. i think at that time, there may have been several thousand miles in 2002 when i began to use the car on more routine bases. there are two occasions that cause the issue to arise. while i am driving, the steering column will lock up causing an issue to shift from gear to gear and the mobility of the car. as the steering column would lock and cause the horn to malfunction and not make a sound and the limit my mobility to park the car. most streets that i drive are not on an incline but there have been few occasions, where if the car was on a slight incline, it would begin to roll. i would use the gear brakes to prevent an accident. another issue involves another path (occasion) which causes the steering wheel to lock which causes malfunctions in the horn and the interlocking incident. if i am driving and in the stages of parking my car, the steering column will lock affecting the ability for me to change gear and my ability to adequately mobility when park. this has occurred more frequently now but it has occurred in 1999. when i was advised of the interlock recall, i thought this was addressed. once this occurs, the car can only be unlocked when i drive when i press down of the hear charger, put the key in the slight covering the gear changer and move the steering wheel. between nhtsa campaign id #: 03v423000 and nhtsa campaign id #: 02v120000, i thought these issue was addressed. when i called honda today and spoke to [xxx] 800-999-1099 ext [xxx], the recall is associated with the vin soi wanted to make sure this was acknowledged for incidents for my car model & vin. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Transmission is chronically slow to downshift. seems to hunt for gears and downshift indecisively. can make vehicle run as if it surges. once in a gear, especially 3rd or 4th, still seems to hunt about or surge within that gear. dealer visit today (ralph schomp in littleton,co - no complaints there) indicates all is well, that's the way it runs. i think an updated computer chip could cure all this. *ak
Speedometer is inaccurate at the 10% level which maufacturer says is within guidelines established by your agency altho could not provide me with hard copy, later dealer said inaccurate speddometer readings within dot standard and finally said it was a honda standard. inaccurate speedometer is dangerous and may lead to a serious accident. honda replaced it once. told me replacement might be as bad. and it was. so does honda have who knows how may accords out on the roads with 10% inaccurate readings on their speedometers? i believe that accuracy standard shoud exist for sppedometers but am at mercy of manufacturer who says they set the accuracy level only. this is a safety issue in my humble opinion. could you look into this for me and probabl thousands of other honda owners who do not have the faintest idea that their speedo are giving them false reasdings.
Clutch pedal releases in jerks causes the car to lunge. bad at stop signs and slow travel traffic.
Possible parking pawl failure, loud clanging noise in front engine compartment as if metal component broke. in moving shifter from drive to reverse loud transmission gear noise is evident. from reverse to drive noise is not as loud. when shifter is moved to park there seems to be more movement in vehicle as transmission gear locks into parking gear. this is not normal wear on transmission , as dealer states. *ak
Consumer has been experiencing engine stalls and transmission hunting for gears
Since 1/99, car will not start sporadically, dealership and regional offfice contacted. keys and immobilizer replaced. today, car shut off in third gear. had to come to full stop and start up again. dealership contacted again.
Transmission slips consistently noticeable in reverse at speeds over 5 mph
Automatic transmission lunges from gear to gear when slowing down and speeding up. it appears the computer controling the transmission is not sure what gear it should be in.
This car is a lemon. i have had so many problems i can not believe it. the sunroof has been replace 3 times, the headliner 2 times. the fuel gauge sticks at times, even after filling the tank it only shows it's half full. the egr valve has been replaced once, and it now is bad again. i burn 93 octane gas, supposedly the cleanest, but my dealer tells me it's from dirty gas. the fan for the climate control chirps like a bird.
Shift position switch, shift sensor.
Windshiled leaking which caused headliner to be replaced. nlm
After approximately 2 weeks of owning my car i began to hear a whinning sound when i would take my foot of of the gas. this noise got progressively louder. i would like to know if other consumers have reported any problems with there new car and the tranmission and if so will there be a recall. honda was very good about fixing my car and i have no problems with the service but i am concerned about just purchasing a car and having something major like this occur
Having transmission replaced with aluminum due to other transmission made of plaster. aluminum transmission parts not available until february. vehicle would shutter & squeak. *ak
Has been repaired 6 times, failed again. no safety defect mentione din the summary. *ak
Clutch pedal failure.
The clutch master cylinder makes a loude squeaking noise when hot
Speedometer failed. *yc
About 4 months after the purchase of the car, the clutch started making some loud squeeks while pressing or releasing the clutch. the squeek got louder as the traffic got heavier. while this was occuring the clutch becomes hard and difficult to control (too much release or too little). i took the car to the nearest dealership (honda world, westminster) and told them. they said it was the master cylinder and at this moment there was no replacement. i waited about 2 months then finally in august '98 it was replaced. i left for a trip to san francisco and by the time i got to my destination it was already occuring again. while driving in the city and going up steep hills it became difficult to calculate the release in the clutch because it was not smooth- it felt like it was rubbing against something else, i had to use the emergency brake. i took it back to the dealership as soon as i came back. at this moment they told me that it was a defect and they had no solutions and that i could only wait. after waiting for awhile i called american honda and told my problem. they said they were awared but they could not do anything about it at this time. they promised to call me to keep me inform of the situation which they have been. in one of the phone calls i was told that they had a part but it was only temporary and it would not solve the problem permanently. at this moment other things have come out - the driver's side door lock gives me electrical shocks while locking and unlocking the door and these are not minor shocks. also sometimes the brakes squeak while pressing - it happened a little bit when i got it but i thought maybe because it was new. i don't want to be stuck with a car with these many problems - it was new and i have followed all the schedule maintance, all the help given it greatly appreciated it, thank you...
Driver's side power window failed. *yc
Vehicle would skip gears, and when consumer tried to put vehicle in gear, vehicle would not move. consumer contacted dealer, and dealer tuned vehicle up. however, problem has reoccurred. please provide any further information.*ak

Transmission does not shift into second gear. once rpms rev to approx. 4000-5000, transmission violently shifts into gear.
There is a whining noise coming from the transmission. on a hot day, at highway speeds, when the trans. fluid gets hot and thins out the noise becomes increasingly louder. i have contacted the dealership and honda customer relations. they claim it is a harmless noise, due to transmission design. they offered to install a sound dampening kit which i consider a patch and not a repair. i declined to have this done. honda assured me that it does not affect reliability. however, the whining is slowly getting noisier. looking at your database, i noticed a similar complaint. odi id 700587. honda dealership said this is common on the v-6 models and no permanent repair bulletins have been issued from honda. this whining noise is not normal and should be addressed by honda, and a permanent repair should be initiated.
Vehicle's gears disengage and make loud noise while engaging.
