I own a 1998 honda accord w/ less thatn 60000 miles. my transmission has completeley died. honda knows they have faulty transmissions / they recalled my make and model 2000/2001 for the same problem i am having. my warranty has expired, but i want them to fix my car/ this problem is chronic w/ honda. *ak
I have a 1998 honda accord with transmission problems.. after startin the car in the morning as i drive down the street the transmission revs higher then normal when shifting from first to second (driving normaly) like it suppose to shift at 3000 rpm but when it gets to 3k it shifts but then the rpm's just climb for 1k more then the car just lags a lil as it goes into second after the car is warmed up that problem disapears. the other problem is when slowin down to make a turn and if no cars are comin i gently step on the gas to go (not completly stoped) the transmission slipps and then stutters till 2k rpm then it cathes and launches the car forward. i have talked to the honda dealership and they wont do anythin and want to charge me 4k for a new transmission. i read of several other people are having this problem.. *ak
Upon exiting a parking lot at 15 mph engine revved and vehicle surged forward, and was rear ended by another vehicle. dealership determined that transmission failure caused the problem. however, dealership didn't specify the specific failure, they just said that transmission needed to be replaced.*ak
Transmission failure at 60000 miles.*ak
Transmission is slipping when shifting. *ak
I own a 1998 honda accord sedan which was bought in december of 1998. like so many other people who own the 1998-1999 models, i am having transmission problems and the transmission needs to be replaced. i have 100,000 miles on it and the car is serviced whenever the time came. my dad is a mechanic so he was always strict on maintenance. even timing belt and all other belts were changed out. i am very disappointed because i thought honda's were reliable. this is a 5 yr. old car and already the transmission needs to be replaced. i've called my dealership and explained everything. they gave me a number to honda of america to make a complaint. they made a claim and called me back with no help to me. their customer service is really bad also, not much help and were rude. they stated that the warranty is over and will not cover anything. now my car is just sitting at there and can;t be driven safely. the problem is that the transmission slips on all the gears and will not drive correctly. at a stop, the car would jerk back to first roughly and the when i accelerate, it slips on first gear and then finally catches violently. i am very disappointed in honda overall. they are suppose to be reliable cars. please look into this complaint because i'm one of the many who are dealing with the same issues. the price for a rebuilt transmission is 3500. i didn't expect to buy a new car in 98 and 5 yrs later have to replace the transmission. there is something fishy going on with the 98-99 transmission. even the 00-01 accords have now warrant with a 100,000 mile/ 7 yr. warranty. honda seems to know something we don't know and i think it's a recall. please help if possible. here's a website /forum where many others are voicing their concerns and complaints. http://www.autofan.com/forum_thread.asp?message=5734 and http://www.autofan.com/forum_thread.asp?message=3625 please help if you can. thank you, wayne le. *ak

Rec'd recall 98v018000 for power train: transmission, automatic: ignition interlock system, after car hit a neighbors house, the vehicle popped out of gear. *bf the consumer requested reimbursement. *sc the consumer received a recall letter after the incident happened. *jb
Transmission failed on 98 honda accord, replaced two months ago, same problem again, may need it replaced again. *la
Erratic shifting. *ak
98 accord 4cyln ex. only 47,000 miles on it. transmission slipping from 1st to 2nd and slightly from 2nd to 3rd. car lundges foward when coming to a stop when the gears change from 2nd to 1st. premature transmission failure. *ak
While vehicle was shut off the key was taken out of the ignition without the vehicle being in the park position. as a result, the vehicle rolled back into a truck.*ak
My 1998 honda accord (automatic transmission) has a mileage of only about 50,000 miles. over the last couple of months i noticed that the engine check light had come on and i was having a problem with delayed and hard shifting of gears especially at lower speeds . the engine check came up with a diagnosis code of p740. the service advisor also detected leaking transmission fluid and he recommended that i fix the seals and drive it around for some time. even after the seals were replaced i still found that the vehicle was lunging forward whenever it came to a stop and it would have a trouble changing gears (especially the second gear). though the vehicle is in drivable condition it seems like a big safety hazard and a disaster waiting to happen. i took the vehicle to a honda dealer who recommended that i replace the entire transmission at a cost of about $4000. given the low mileage and otherwise good condition of my vehicle i can only attribute this problem to a manufacturing defect. when i did some research i found out that there are a number of 98 accord owners who have been facing similar problems with their transmission. i have sent a fax to honda of america with a detailed description of this problem about a month ago but have not heard any response. i am expecting honda to take a greater responsibility in understanding and rectifying customer complaints with such serious safety implications. however that has not happened so far. i am currently not using this vehicle much given the obvious safety issues. *la
Transmission had been replaced at 60,000 miles. currently, at 103,000 miles transmission needs to be replaced again. *ak
Car lunges forward at stops while brake is depressed. transmission is delayed when shifting from park to r or d, slipping when accelerator is pressed and finally shifting with a jerk. slips when accelerating from a stop, engaging with a hard jerk and slips again when shifting from first to second gear. on hard acceleration, transmission downshifts hard and engine revs, car feels out of control. notified dealer of problems at 65,000 miles and was advised transmission is bad and needs replacing at a cost of $5,000. honda does not allow dealer to rebuild. dealer is required to return entire assembly to honda. honda customer service was contacted. i am still waiting for a reply. honda's reputation was built on reliability. they should stand behind their product. *la
My 1998 honda accord lx model had atf leak at around 70,000 miles. i got the axial seal replaced and power flush the atf. now my transmission started slipping and the car is vibrated when i shift from p to n or r or d4,3,2,1. i was told by honda that i need to replace a new transmission. i personally think honda should take this matter seriously. i do trust honda for the reputation and i am trying to be patient before i am loosing my trust. i found out on the web more than 1000 complaints about honda's transmission. i bought my 98 honda because my 92 honda which has 150k and it is still running find. *la
The clutch engaged and would not shift out of gear until vehicle died. brakes had to be applied firmly because vehicle was moving erratically. consumer went into web side, and found the same problem she had as stated in complaint #8013574, filed on june 1, 2002. also, vehicle experienced suddenly acceleration.*ak
Transmission problems on 1998 honda accord lx.*mr at very low mileage. the cost of repairs were over $5000.00. *cb
I have a 1998 honda accord 4dr ex that is having transmission problem. the vehicle does not seem to drive forward. when it does go forward, seems like the vehicle is having trouble shifting gear. the rpms goes up about 5000 and the car does not seem to move. i took the car to the dealer, it was told that there is something wrong with the torque converter. is there any recall regarding the transmission torque converter?*ak
The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for a transmission problems. the dealer changed the transmission fluids. two weeks later transmissions was not working. *ak
98 honda accord, transmission fluid leakage and transmission slipping, dealer told me that the seals are damaged because the internal cv joint bearing is damaged, causing metal to ruin transmission valve body. estimate to repair$5,000. i called american honda and i was told to" assume responsibility for my car". the car started acting up at 103,000 miles. i currently have 110,000 and hope it will last long enough to scrape up the money to buy something else. note pleased with the atitude of any representative of honda. *ak
Clutch failure on 1998 honda accord-replacement part (clutch master cylinder) on emergency national backorder. told that honda had experienced "problems" with this part. are there not enough to handle nationwide demand?*ak
the clutch master cylinder on this vehicle is defective. when the vehicle is stopped ,when the clutch is depressed and the car is placed in gear the clutch automatically engages and the car moves on its own . this can cause deadly consiquenses at a red light ,school crossing, railroad crossing , the master cylinder fails with usage ,one of the problem is honda doesn't have the parts to fix it! so here we are with a 5 year old car w 70000 miles in it and the factory doesn"t have any parts.
After exiting my 1998 honda accord after parking it on my flat driveway, my car then rolled down my backyard hill and 100ft into the woods on my property. the key had come out normally when i exited the vehicle, however the car was in the "drive " position. no one was injured but the car had $6500 damage. i am complaining because i thought a safety feature of most ignitions is that the keys do not come out unless the car is in park. 2 months after this event honda has come out with a statement regarding '98 accords having a problem with the key coming out when the car was not in "park." *la
The car makes a bumping noise when backing up, it also slams into first gear when the car is cold.*ak
Master cylinder on clutch failed. had no clutch. it took honda a week and me calling customer relations at american honda to locate the part. the car rental was $315. customer relations is "playing games" with customer requesting reimbursement for car rental. they are not "user friendly." i have had to rent a car or loose time from work many times because of this car. honda is not responsive to these problems. *jb
Consumer states that while driving vehicle the automatic transmission will go into neutral without anyone touching the gear shift and without warning.*ak
1998 honda accord v6 transmission failed. had all dealer prescribed maintenance at dealer and i suddenly have a transmission that is beyond repair, according to them. less than 5 years old - 114,000 miles. honda website did have transmission recall on similar model accords (same body type, later year), but not mine.*ak
My transmission went out (slipped in and out of gear lurching forward) at 81,000 miles even though i had maintained the car just as the manufacturer suggested at the honda dealership. after seeing many of the exact same problems from other honda owners of the v6 engine for years 1998-2002 on the internet, i confronted the dealer and asked them to contact american honda. i got them to give me a new (reconditioned/rebuilt) transmission and it did not cost me anything. unfortunately if the consumer is not informed and fairly direct, then you could end up paying what they wanted in the beginning which was $4,500 for a new transmission. from what i could tell on the internet, the best deal everyone else got was a transmission but they paid for the labor (around $500). i paid nothing, except being without a car for a week.
I have a 1998 accord ex, only 75000 miles. at first i heard noices under the vehicle at low speed. later i notice my transmission fluid leaks and then the noice got louder. the gear seems to slip and not shifting properly when accellerating and decelerating, this occurred more especially at cold start. i then brought the car to my family mechanic and was told that the my transmission need to be rebuilt, that i have a broken bearing which caused the fluid to leak and making all the noices. later he told me that one of the solenoid shift valve was bad in which caused the transmission to shift out of the ordinary and would not shift up and down at low gear per engine rotational speed (rpm). he told me that if i had driven this vehicle longer it would cost me a fortune to replaced the transmission. if this is the problem with honda, why it's not resolving this issue with a recall. i am so skeptical of buying another honda vehicle. my last 1993 toyota 4runner did not have any problem at 189,000 miles. if yall out there know any info, please let me know. thanks. *ak
The transmission was rough in shifting when we first bought the car, and now the transmission has failed totally. i was driving down the highway one day and the transmission all of a sudden switched down to first gear while i was going 55 mph. i though this was very dangerous, so i took it to the dealer. they're telling me i need a new transmission. i have 8ok miles, but i feel honda has made a defective product and now i have to come up with the money for a new transmission. *ak
Automatic transmission in '1998 accord lx(2.3l) does not up/downshift properly when coldonce engine/trans get up to full operating temp all feels ok. no useful response from honda dealer to on going problem (@ last year+). *ak
Transmission started to jerk then failed in all but low gear daeler says honda has so many request for replacement transmissions than none are available. *ak
Transmission failure at 85,000 on 1998, honda, accord. dealer says new transmission necessary at $5000.*ak
i was backing up in a parking lot. my car suddenly started to accelerate. i pressed on the brakes, but they did not work. it was like i had no control over the car. the car finally stopped after i crashed through a fence and hit a tree.
The bearings went bad in the output shaft causing transmission fluid to leak. had to replace the transmission at 89,000 miles. honda paid for 50% of the repair cost, but after reviewing similar complaints, i believe this should be seriously considered for a recall. *ak
The catalytic converter failed but was under some special extended warranty so i didn't have to pay a cent. but, it failed, and i am not pleased. the second problem which is my major complaint is that i am being told that i will have to replace my transmission on a car that only has 83k miles on it! honda knows that this is a problem with 98 - 01 accord models, but only extended the warranty to 00-01 models. i believe honda should be force to do a recall! it is very dangerous to be driving in southern california i-5 with a car that doesn't shift properly. please help all us 98-99 honda accord owners.
Automatic transmission rebuilt @ 55000 miles on my 1998 accord ex buy aamco transmission. i have a 2001 odessey and received recall for the same problem i had with my 1998 accord. *jb
When the clutch was pressed there was a loud noise which came from the stick shift. *nlm
Back last year in may i had to replace my v-6 3.0 automatic transmition at 74,000 miles! i can understand if the transmition goes out at 125,000 miles or more but 74,000 doesnt sound right to me. they said when i had the transmition replaced that the gears in the transmition compleatly wore away! this repair costed me $2,000 and at the time i didn't have that kind of money. the car had regular check ups and was working fine for years. i would like you to check more accords if they have transmition problems like i have had, i have talked to many people online who also have this problem and i have one friend who also had this problem, but for him he just had to pay for the parts because he could fix it him self. please look into this problem and if there is componsation please help me because that is alot of money that i do not make as a student!*ak
Automatic transmission is slipping even though less than 100,000 miles on car. *ak
Transmission failed. started by making clicking noises when going from park to drive. transmission eventually would not engaged. gears slipped severely all the while transmission fluid leaking. i had to keep putting fluid in until i had to replace the whole transmission. i replaced it with a salvage 98 transmission only to start having problems again. honda would not help me saying that it was my fault because i had not got the suggested service on it at 30, 60k miles. *la
The automatic transmission failed to shift properly. *jb
Transmission failure 1998 honda accord. *ak
The main reason to buy a honda is because of its reliability, and if these cars can't even reach a 100,000 miles, whats the use of doing all the services on time? all the fluids and everything was taken care of on time and still the transmission went out. what's the whole concept? one thousand of its qualified technicians have enginered a machine that can't even last 100,000 miles. i've heard a lot of people who have experienced its transmission problem of their coupe. i think it's time to have a recall. *la
Transmission jumps when coming to a stop and does not shift smoothly through gears when accelerating. march 4 2003, honda dealership found transmission failed internally and car needs new transmission. also, on august 5,2002 a complaint was made about the transmission jumping when stopping and a transmission service was performed. *nlm
Automatic transmission started slipping at about 80,000 miles and will need to be replaced. *ak
Gear shift would not shift out park, causing the consumer to depress the manual release button in order to release the gear shift problem also caused brake lights to be inoperative.*ak *mr
I own a 1998 honda accord with 44,000 miles. i purchased the car new in 1998. i am now having serious transmission problems with the car - lurching and bumping. when i presented the problem to honda, they said that i must pay for a new transmission because the car is out of warranty. can honda get away with this? i can't believe this is the honda car company. i purchased the car because of honda's track-record of reliability.
Consumer states that while driving the vehicle and no warning the vehicle would accelerate dealer notified.
