Recently reported FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE problems on 1998 Honda Accord

Noted excessive smell of gasoline in and immediately outside the vehicle, and later determined gasoline mileage had dropped dramatically from 30+ mpg to 18 mpg. upon securing the first available diagnostic check from my local mechanic it was determined there was "fuel leaking from the top area of fuel tank, but many items would have to be moved out of the way to lower the fuel tank to make a more specific location of the site and cause of the leak, which would be labor intensive and costly because the entire rear cradle would have to be removed with the danger that old rusting bolts would break and might not be able to be replaced. possible items that might need to be replaced, include the fuel tank, fuel filler neck and fuel pump." *tr

Failed clear coat and faded paint were the first problems to occur with my silver honda accord. next was the gas tank leak, where fumes and leaked gas could be smelled and seen on the ground when filling the tank more than half full. finally my passenger side front subframe rear cross member rusted thru and now the car isn't safe to drive and won't pass inspection without major repairs to the frame. none of the rest of the under body is rusted, just that section. not happy! *tr

1998 honda accord: vehicle lost power several times at highway speed. motor stopped, powers steering and brakes lost, gauge needles spun to zero, as if car was shut off at during normal operation. we did not touch key! almost got run over by car behind us. problem occurred six more times before we could get to local honda dealership. they charged me $186.26 to replaced defective ignition switch and they advised they fix a recall for switch interlock while car was in shop for four days! we sent a letter to honda,[xxx] from honda america california called me to decline reimbursing my cost! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I have had so many corrosion issues with this car, it is structurally dangerous. the car has 160,000 miles on it but has been kept in a garage and has had the under carriage frequently washed since i live in the northeastern us. in the last 2 years i have had to replace both the brake and gas lines do to corrosion. the gas line ruptured during a drive. fortunately there was no fire. the gas tank rusted through and was replaced. it was leaking for some time. the leak was near the half way mark and only leaked when over half full and during driving or going up hill. fortunately we did not have a fire. i just found out the front sub frame is completely rotted out and will not pass inspection this year. body rust is minimal and normal for age and the northeast winters. the clear coat is pealing off everywhere. i am very disappointed with my first and probably only honda. looking back, i am very lucky that the car didn't catch fire and kill someone. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1998 honda accord lx. the contact was driving 50 mph when the check engine light illuminated and the smell of fuel emitted inside of the vehicle. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was contacted but the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 119,000 and the current mileage was 120,000.

1998 honda accord shuts off by itself while driving. happens sporadically. replaced fuel pump, fuel igniter, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, etc. nothing fixed it. now they say it might be the ignition switch. there was a recall for this in 2002 but my vin doesn't come up as part of that recall so i have to pay to have it replaced. and that may not fix it either. *tr

The engine fails while driving for no apparent reason. the car is running fine, then at different speeds, the engine fails. all braking and power functions fail. this occurs at different times and dates. there does not seen to be any reason for it. the engine runs fine when it is re-started. *tr

Throttle body pulley. the pulley for the throttle uses two cables, each anchored in the pulleys. the anchoring area for the cruise control cable has broken, possibly from corrosion. the same material and assembly also is for the accelerator pedal, so this break in the pulley could also mean the accelerator pedal would not work. broken part is the throttle body pulley.

Honda accord accelerator cable failure. i picked up my son from school. i started to drive away from the school and the accelerator pedal stopped responding. i steered the car back to the curb using the remaining momentum, stopping near the curb at an angle. i opened the engine hood to locate any loose cables going from the engine to the accelerator pedal. when i touched the accelerator cable, the metal cable was loose and fell out of the housing, revealing a broken frayed cable. i called a tow truck to deliver the car to a honda dealer for repair. *tr

My 1998 honda accord 4 door sedan l4 engine stalls and the engine dies while driving in traffic. i am very concerned about this issue as it relates to my safety and the safety of my family. the first time this event happened the car stalled then died. the check engine light came on. after i let the car sit for awhile i attempted to start the car. it took four times. i then sought service or repair. four attempts have been made to correct this problem. none of which are successful. *tr

My car started leaking gas. when i took it to the dealer, where it was bought and has had all of its service, they told me that the gas tank would need to be replaced and had rusted through. this doesn't seem like normal wear and tear for a 10-year old, dealer maintained car that has never been in an accident. but honda could provide no other reason for the tank to have begun leaking. *tr

I boughy my 98 honda accord with 87000 miles. 1 year later with less than 100000 miles my transmission went completly out. it was $3000 to fix. 2 years later with only 140000 miles my transmission went out again. $3000 to fix. it now has 170000 miles and is starting to slip. it also stalls with no warning. it has stalled many times in the middle of an intersection. honda replaced the ignition switch 1 month ago and since it has continued to stall. honda will no longer fix it. *nm

Fuel gauge sending unit failed 4 times: 12/98, 12/99, 8/00 and 4/03. american honda would not admit that there is a generic design problem with the fuel gauge sending unit. did not offer to replace the 4th failed sending unit free of charge. *nlm

Engine is overheating. dealership is unclear as to what is causing defect. this defect occurs randomly regardless of weather conditions. *ak honda stated new head gaskets were needed, after repair check engine light illuminated, dealer then stated #5 cylinder was misfiriing, dealer cleaned plug, engine light illuminated again, all plugs were replaced, computer was reset, and #5 spark plug wire was replaced, engine light still illuminated, consumer had thermostat replaced and examined it finding burrs were evident on the stamping surrounding the movable bellows, a lot of shiny ridges were evident on the bellows, he ran a hot water test to see if the burrs would cause the device to remain closed, however it stuck close, consumer removed the burrs and the thermostat operated properly, on one occasion all lights went out at night due to steam from thermostat, consumer feels the radiator recovery tube was being blown off by the steam also, check engine light still illuminated and code p1399 comes up, which noone knows what the code stands for, engine runs rough.. vehicle experienced gas gauge problems. *slc

1) the emergency brake light came on and would not go off. a bump would finally make it go off. paid to have fuel cap replaced, didn't help. put fuel cap of 2000 accord on, didn't help. disabled sensor from cap, finally resolved light issue. became invalid, and drove with brake on several times due to frequency of light being on. 2) srs light came on without reason. diagnostic checks (3) indicated nothing was wrong. finally replaced the sensor and problem was resolved.

In july 1998, i purchased a 1998 honda accord v6 ex. in february 2000 the first problem with the engine check and egr defect occurred. the problem was resolved with the replacement of the intake manifold and repositioning of the pcv valve and hose in accordance with honda recall instructions and resetting the "check engine" light indicator at no cost to me. service occurred at dealer. in april 2000, the second problem with the egr valve as manifested by the "check engine" light occurred. the problem was resolved by replacement of the pcv hose in accordance with honda recall instructions and resetting the "check engine" light indicator at no cost to me. service occurred at dealer. in october 2000, the third occurrence of the egr valve failure occurred. this problem was resolved by cleaning the egr port and valve. this was performed at a cost of $66 plus tax. service occurred at dealer. in january 2001, a related occurrence of the egr problem occurred with an idle air controller (iac) motor failing. the egr port and valve were not checked, however the symptoms of the problem were resolved by replacement of the iac motor and clearing of the check engine light indicator. this resulted in a cost to me of $226.69. service occurred at dealer. in november 2001, i was sent a notice by american honda concerning the egr failures and extending the warranty to 80,000 miles. service occurred at dealer. in may 2002, the fourth egr problem occurred with the check engine light indicating a problem. the problem was diagnosed to be the egr valve failure and the catalytic converter failure. this repair has been estimated to be $800.00. honda?s district service manager has denied the claim, since the failure occurred at 81,000 miles, it has been considered to be out-of-warranty by honda and therefore repairs would be at my cost. service occurred at dealer in tucson, az. as a further point, honda has denied all claims for work done under warranty. *ak
