We have classified the 65 complaints from 1997 Honda Accord about AIR BAGS into the following categories.
I was driving home from work and my srs light came on and has not went off. i have not hit anything and i was just driving on the interstate when it just came on.
The srs light came on suddenly while driving. took to dealer and they are charging a lot to repair it. i have not done the repair . how come air bag related srs light can come while just driving and why do i need to pay for it ? it should be covered by manufacturer
The srs light illuminated indicating an airbag problem with my honda accord at approx. 130,000 miles. the dealer charged me $90 for a diagnostic test with a 8-5 internal failure code. dealer wants to replace srs unit at a cost to me of $1100. i believe this is a safety issue that should be covered by the honda corporation as a recall as they have courageously done for the honda civic. *tr
The srs light randomly came on. took to mechanic and he said there is a problem with the srs module computer which means the airbags will not deploy. *tr
Airbag light stays on. *tr
I have several complaints: 1) the srs light came on. the dealer claimed that i needed a new computer at a cost of $900. i researched possible problems on this and other websites and had listed the technical service bulletins that were relevant. the dealer was not so thorough. my research showed that honda had been having problem with these computers already for several years and done nothing about it. the problem was with a sensor on the passenger side air bag which was malfunctioning in such a way as to leave in doubt whether or not the air bag would deploy. it is ridiculous that consumers have to pay nearly 1,000.00 to fix systemic problems in a safety system that have repeatedly not been addressed. 2) my abs light started coming on. when starting the engine the pump motor for the abs system would activate and attempt to pump fluid in the system. it could be heard from inside the car as a grinding noise. it would cycle on and off for about 6 or so times then the relay would trip, turn off motor and illuminate the abs light. the dealer claimed that the ams module was malfunctioning and needed replacement at a cost of 1,700.00. ridiculous. after doing some research online it seems that this is also a common failure for this make and model of car. 3) wireless entry system failed. 4) a/c evaporator sprung a leak 5) driver side passenger door auto lock does not work. this car is far from reliable, as advertised to be, and very questionable in the safety department. i am finished with honda! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1997 honda accord. the contact stated that while parked, the air bag warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the mechanic reset the air bag light and stated that if the failure persisted, the srs module would have to be replaced. approximately one week later the air bag warning light re-illuminated. the vehicle was not further repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000.
The srs (airbags) light has been on for over 2 years. it indicates the airbags are malfunction. initially, i attempted to re-set the light twice, but it came back shortly after resetting. after searching through internet and nhtsa website here, i realize that this is a widespread problem with 1997 honda accord model. since this is a serious safety issue and is not drivers fault, honda should hold the responsibility and issue a recall to repair it. *tr
I recently purchased a used honda accord and noticed the srs light was on. subsequent research revealed that the control module is defective and honda does not cover its replacement. this is a safety issue, as the airbags will not deploy with the srs light on. honda should be responsible for this. please issue a recall. this problem has been occurring for several years--obviously, they are not interested in meeting the safety standards that the nhtsa or dot sets and do not care about the safety of their passengers. please do something about this before people die unnecessarily. *jb
Air bag malfunction light is on. this is a safety related defect. this puts the driver and passengers at risk of death and or serious injury. this falls under nhtsa list of safety related defects. this item needs to be corrected asap. the dealer refuses to repair at no cost to me. also contacted american honda motor co. they stated that they will not cover any amount to fix the air bags. even after i informed them that this was a serious safety issues plus in case of an accident i am at high risk of death or being critically injured. they have left me with out any other option but to file this complaint. i hope that they will follow nhtsa procedures by doing what the law requires and stop ignoring there responsibility to correct critical safety related defects. *nm
Airbag warning light is on. due to a malfunction. company refuses to repair. honda co. they know that by law they need to repair this problem, because it is a safety issue, they want clients to repair their cars at owners expense breaking the law. the nhtsa is not enforcing the law when they know honda co has to cover this type of repair. *jb
The srs light in the consumer's 1997 honda accord illuminated. the mechanic determined that the air bag failed and needed to be replaced. *ts *nm
Srs computer failed. air bag system will not operate. dealer advised that the defect is in the computer module. *ak
Srs light on 1997 honda accord coming on. diagnosed for $85. battery replaced. a week later it came back on and stayed on. after another $85, told that srs system is bad, and it will be $830 to replace. i see on the internet that this is a common problem, and learn that the replacement part is upgraded. i bought the honda because of its high reliability and would appreciate being refunded by honda. *jb
Srs light has been reset several times on my 1997 honda accord lx.. there seems not to be a problem with the airbags. this is extremely frustrating! *tr
While driving driver side air bag deployed. vehicle was not involved in any type of collision, did not run over anything in the road. however, consumer sustained knee, neck, and back injuries. vehicle was towed to the dealer.*ak
Dt: the srs air bag control module failed, however, the light illuminated in early february 2005. brought vehicle to dealer, and dealer diagnosed it as a defective control module. consumer stated this was a common problem. no replacement because it would cost $800. *ak *jb
The vehicle had a defective air bag module which caused the srs light to illuminate. *nm *tc *jb
Consumer noticed that the srs light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the control module needed to be reset, and reset it on three different visits to the dealership. however, the problem recurred, and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. mechanic determined that the control module needed to be replaced.*ak
While driving 5 mph, the front air bags inadvertently deployed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. *jb
Consumer noticed that the srs light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the control module needed to be reset, and reset it three times. however, the problem recurred, and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. mechanic determined that the control module needed to be replaced. *ak *jb
As with the others srs light came on in 2004 when i purchased the car from a private owner. before i purchased the car he took it to a honda dealer for a complete inspection and nothing was noted that the srs light was on. i took it into a honda dealer and they didn't run any checks they just told me that it was going to cost $1200.00 to fix. they took the car to do some other minor repairs and when i picked it up the light was off. it came back on within months of being off. it has been on to this day. it sounds fishy to me that they can diagnose by the lamp on when i read that it could be a number of less expensive fixes. *tr
The complaint is regarding the srs module. the unit malfunctioned, giving a red dashboard alarm light. the local honda dealer attempted to reset the trouble light, but couldn't. the dealer indicated the part number on my service invoice as honda part # 06772-sv4-a71 for a 1997 honda accord. i queried several salvage yards for a used part as the oem part was in excess of $500. i was sent the srs module from a salvage yard only to discover that the srs module was indeed from a 1997 honda, however, my srs module (the original defective srs module) was from a 1996 honda.obviously, i purchased a new 1997 honda with a 1996 electronic part. this part was or could have been on the shelf for about 2 years before it was installed in my vehicle. my srs part number taken from my vehicle has part # model 77960-sv4-a93. what is a 1996 part doing in my "new" 1997 vehicle? moreover, this is a critical safety issue that is a direct reflection on life or death..............namely mine and my family. electronic parts are not like engine parts that have indefinite shelf life. a crank shaft can sit on a shelf for 30 years and still work properly when installed. try the same thing with an electronic component. thanks, steve chludzinski. *ak
S.r.s light malfuncting on 97 honda accord and honda motor company refuses to acknowdledge it has a problem with this system. articles on the internet report that honda airbags at times do not deploy when involved in accidents where they should have. honda motor company states in the owners manual that this system does not require maintenance and that be checked in 10 years. i feel the the honda motor company should held accountable for this problem and made liable to repair this safety problem when contacted. *jb
Srs light is on, 2nd occurrence. reset at dealer first occurrence after collision, (air bag did not deploy). second occurance, came on without collision.*ak
The air bag module failed causing the sensor light to stay on. the consumer was concerned that the air bag will not deploy upon impact. *ak *sc the vehicle had an engine oil leak, the dealer replaced the valve cover gasket. *jb
My srs has come on for the third time in my car. the dealer told me while the srs light is on, the air bags won't deploy in the event of an accident. the first two times this has happen, the dealer reset the light. they told me it would cost $800 to fix. i don't have $800 sitting around, therefore i had them reset the light. this is a major safety concern honda needs to address. i bought a car with air bags, and right now my air bags won't deploy. if the seatbelts in my car are covered under a lifetime warranty then why aren't the air bags (it's all part of the srs). i have done absolutely nothing to the car to cause this. i don't feel i should have to sacrifice my life as well as any of my passenger's lives because i don't have $800 to fix honda's problem. i've checked other resources on the internet and have found numerous honda owners with the same problem. i think this should prompt an immediate recall.*ak
As others have stated, the srs light recently came on for no apparent reason. my 97 accord lx wagon has 72000 miles. this same problem happened a year ago (at about 65,000), and i paid about $40 to have them check it out, and reset the light. they said nothing was wrong with the air bag system. this shouldn't be an expense the owner should have to bear. obviously, i am not alone in having this problem. *la
Srs light/sensor unit. we own a 1997 accord. in 2002, the srs light came on, and we brought it to honda dealer. they were able to get the light to turn off. the light came on again recently, and as last year they were able to turn the light off. they said if it comes on again, we will have to replace the defective sensor for $825. well, a week later, the light came on again. we only have 39k miles on the car. according to honda, it's not the age, or mileage, but how many times you start your vehicle that wears away at this expensive unit. i probably start my car 2 times a day, sometimes less. if we don't replace the unit. in the event of an accident, the air bags will not deeply (according to honda). numerous honda owners have been faced with this problem. why are honda owners being sacked with the cost of a defective part? what is being done to make this part more durable? my friend bought a new 2002 odyssey, and already had the light go on after 7 months. obviously, not much has changed. *jb
The srs warning light came on at about 107000 miles. it was checked and reset at honda service. within 100-200 miles it came on again. when taken to honda service for the next oil service the light-on was checked again and could not be reset. i was told the sensor needed to be replaced at a cost of $715.00. needless to say, i am driving with the light on. i bought the veh. new and it has never been in an accident. replacement of parts for normal wear and tear is understandable, but not for parts that are never activated. this should be a honda responsibility. i am not sure if the air bags will deploy if i am in an accident and the light is a constant nusance. i have aslo had the service engine on light reset a number of time during ownership with no fault present. the day i was at honda service there were 2 other owners requesting service for a srs on light. jenkins and wynne honda of clarksville, tn services my veh. (931-647-3353) .*ak
The "srs" light has repeatedly come on. honda service says the sensor/module is bad and needs to be replace at a cost of $715.00. the air bags have never been deployed. honda should warrant this safety equipment item at no cast to the owner. the warning light is currently "on" and cannot be reset according to honda service department. *la
The srs light in my 1997 accord wagon is on for the second time. the first time honda simply turned it off (and charged me). now i will be paying $1,000 to have the system replaced. this seems to be very common in hondas and it is something that the dealer should pay for or have honda recall. i have always been satisfied with honda - this is my third honda - and it will surely be my last.*ak
I am exactly in the same situation as complaint number 566928. srs light came on one day and stayed on, so i took the car to the dealer and reset the system. with in 2 weeks, srs light came back on stayed on again. i brought it back to the honda dealer and was told the srs control unit was defective and it costs $825.50 at owner's expense. it wasn't simply fair and i am not happy to pay for this. it is nothing that i did wrong, simply one of their safety features was defective. since there was another case exist on this. it needs to be investigated and may need to recall this. if the srs system become defective, it is very dangerous and honda should be responsible for the repair. *nlm
Srs warning light came on and remains on. *ak
The srs light on our 1997 honda ex-v6 model will not go off. we complained to the dealer, willey honda, (where the automobile was purchased new and all service work has been done) and they simply turned the light off saying there must be a "short" in the light. the first complaint was before the warranty was up on the vehicle. several times since when it has come back on - they would turn it off. now they are telling us it must be the computer system and they want us to pay $750.+ to have it repaired properly as the air bags might not be working right! we feel this is a safety issue and they should have taken care of the problem the first time instead of "guessing". this should not be our problem no matter how many miles are on the car! we are, now, afraid to drive it in case they inflate when they "shouldn't" or when they "should". i filed a complaint with customer service honda and they said the warranty was up and i would need to pay. i just heard about your agency or i would have contacted you when it first happened! thanks so much for whatever you can do for me! there isn't really an "incident date" but the program wouldn't let me go on without a "date". i put the date the "news of the cost" was given to me at willey honda! *jb
I have honda accord 1997 v6 model and have continuous problem with srs light. i have spent hundreds of dollars to fix this problem and in the end i am told about computer replacement need which costs $750. i am driving with srs light on all the time. my car has never been in accident and airbags were never deployed. today i saw same complaints on your web site.was there any solution found for this complaint please help me what can i do to fix this srs problem in my car. your help will be greatly appreciated.my car vin is [xxx]. *ak updated 07/26/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)
Consumer stated the airbag light illuminated. took vehicle to dealer and dealer stated the airbag may not deploy. ts airbag module had to be replaced. problem resolved. *tt *jb
Srs light came on and has stayed on. dealer advised that warranty is expired and bring it in to have them diagnose the problem cost $75.00. more than likely $500.00 - 600.00 to correct. i advised that i read an article where in most cased the bushings counld be cleaned and replaced at a charge of $50.00 - 75.00. service clerk claims not to have ever heard that. i have read, on your web site, many complaints of this malfunction on many honda's. dt
Consumer states that the air bag sensor light remain on while driving. dealer and the manufacturer has been notified. nlm

The srs control unit had failed and was replaced. *scc
While driving on highway air bag light came on without warning. vehicle checked by dealer, who advised consumer that airbag is inoperative and needs to be replaced. air bag has not previously deployed.*ak
Airbag light was on at all time, dealer replaced driver's airbag.*ak *yh
I took my vehicle in to the dealership to have the srs light checked out. i was told it was a system unit failure. i was given a price $852.63 to get this repaired. by getting this repaired/replaced i would have a 1 year warranty; but no guarantee that it won't happen again within or after a year. after researching your website (nhtsa), i saw a huge number of complaints on the same matter. i then decided to wait to get it replaced; this is too much money to have it continually replaced. i wanted to know if honda will be sending out a recall. or is this a lost cause.*ak
While driving air bag light stays on. dealer notified. *ak *yh
After starting vehicle air bag sensor light came on and stayed on. contacted dealer . had to replace air bag system.*ak
The airbag control unit failed spontaneously (no accident or tampering) in a very well maintained and relatively new vehicle. failed control unit means the airbag won't deploy when needed. my complaint concerns honda's predatory pricing for this component - $580 for the part, more than $700 with dealer installation. this would seem to lead most owners (possibly myself included) to ignore a problem in a critical safety system.*ak
The srs indicator light appears on the dashboard. light stays on until vehicle is shut off. dealership is aware of the problem. *mr while the consumer was driving the srs light came on due to a faulty air bag system which needed to be repaired. the consumer wanted the repair cost to be covered by extended warranty, but the dealer denied repair under warranty. *yh
Srs light came on twice, with no problem found, needed to be reset by dealer at at cost of $60.00 each time. third time light came on, taken to dealer to have it reset, told the control unit is bad requiring replacement at $800 +. told the airbag may not deploy in an accident or may deploy without being in an accident. no recall or service bulletins found dealing with this issue.*ak
Mechanic told me that the srs module replacement is a "known problem" and should be recalled. *ak
