Problems with 2001 Ford Windstar SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2001 Ford Windstar starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 128 535 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2001 Ford Windstar

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 ford windstar. the contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and the brake pedal delayed in responding. the contact mentioned that when attempting to park, the brake pedal traveled to the floor board. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the vehicle would need to be towed to another shop in regards to it being a modified vehicle. the vehicle was then towed to another independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the vehicle was not safe to drive and that the frame was rusted. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 38,000. *js

This van looks fine on the outside, but the frame and floor are rusted out. i was driving on a city street when the brakes went out and when i took it to be repaired the mechanic at carls body shop , where it was ti be repaired told me it was beyond repair and unsafe to drive. the van is made to transport a wheelchair and the area where the wheelchair is rusted the worst. the mechanic also took pictures of the under body to show me how bad it really was.

Rear axle break due to corrosion of acknowledged inadequately designed axle. break happened in the reinforcement bracket installed do to initial axle recall for potential break due to corrosion.. car was on city street in motion to freeway onramp fortunately the axle broke prior to entering freeway. axle break resulted in sagging axle and a wheel tilted inward at about 20 degrees and wedged against the inner wheel well. tire started to smoke. car is undriveable. the repair is estimated to $1400. ford will not accept any financial responsibility for this break in the brackets installed to prevent the break. additional components are also needing repair and replacement due to the break of the axle.

Brakes continually have failed causing accidents. pedal goes all the way to the floor before and after new brake pads and bring bled.throttle idle sensor causes vehicle to stall while driving. abs light and brake light and check engine light keeps coming on. now they just stay on. i need to know what,if any recalls have been repaired or any options that may be available.

I was driving at around 30 mph, 2 cars in front slammed on brakes, i was approximately 1 1/2 car links back and hit the brakes. abs failed, airbags failed, and slid into car in front of me. i was on a city street going straight.

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 ford windstar. the contact stated that while driving at a very slow speed, the front passenger side coil spring fractured also causing damage to the brake line. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was discovered that both the driver side and passenger side coil springs had been cracked. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact also indicated that while operating the vehicle, the abs and brake sensor warning lights would illuminate. the cause of the failures were not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 119,000.

I came up to a stop sign, the entire front axle broke off the frame, i lost steering, brakes, had to slam it into park to stop. i ended up across the road. there was a recall in 2011 for the axle mount and ford decided it only needed a coating on it, 5 seconds later we would of been on the highway and killed. i emailed ford and they said the recall was still open, the ford dealer never closed it, so they won't help me. that is bull, the coated it and forgot to close it out, thats their fault, i can take pics if you want them.

When i started the vehicle to go shopping everything seemed fine till i got about 25 miles from my house that is when i got stopped at my first red light that when i was waiting for the light to turn green the abs and park brake lights came on so i pulled over at my nearest convenience shut the van off checked under the hood and everything looked fine, i got back into the van and the lights went out, finished my shopping the about 4 minutes after i started the van to come home while waiting in traffic the lights came back on but the brakes felt fine so i drove it home. i had a brake shop check it out and they determined that it was the abs control module (ebcm to be exact) and that it was safe to drive it just wouldn't have abs functioning when the light comes on, contacted ford dealership about the issue but when they checked it the light was out and said there was nothing wrong and because it wasn't a recall nothing can be done about it and if i wanted it brought in to fix it it would cost me $785 dollars. so i looked online and it seems to be a common occurrence with this vehicle and to me a safety issue that should be addressed by the manufacturer and fixed as it seems that it is a bad solder-joint in the ebcm that is causing this error and could potentially cause a fire from what i read in online posts. i am not looking for a free fix i just want ford to step up and fix the safety issues on vehicles they make

We wish to be contacted and have multiple issues to report. (1) odi request for information regarding engineering analysis ea10-007 sub frame and (2) issues of compliance with safety recall procedures and what we believe to be fraudulent and illegal actions. space is inadequate but will try to summarize. vehicle subframe failed at both passenger and driver side rear mounts and thereby caused separation of the steering components and complete loss of steering, loss of brakes, and loss of transmission control. the owner used the only means available to stop the vehicle by turning off the ignition key and 'riding it out.' subframe components and the engine/transmission had been in contact with pavement. large portions of the subframe appear to be missing from the vehicle. the exhaust system was severed. the transmission linkage pulled away and as stated the steering components separated. what is believed to be the air bag cable became wrapped around the steering components. vehicle was towed to a dealership which refuses to inspect, disclose, photograph, or allow to be photographed the massive damage while declaring the vehicle "repairable" and the "repairs have to be done." at issue are declarations that under the recall that "responsibility" rests with the owner and a "right to deny coverage." a demand that repairs be scheduled or the vehicle be towed from the car lot with a demand that a document be signed which amounts to a release and complete misrepresentation of the facts. the dealership has been told that we will lend no truth or validity to their forceful and manipulative demands, nor will we sign any document. it is our intent to destroy the vehicle. we have incurred multiple out of pocket expenses. in essence fraud and illegal acts, under the color of federal law are alleged. we desire to submit a written statement and request for investigation.

Abs failure, reading code c1185 and many other c codes referencing circuit failures at each wheel.

My abs and brake light have been intermittently coming on for some time. there wasn't any change in the brakes so i assumed there was a sensor switch or other computer related issue. i am not a mechanic and kept driving the vehicle. the brake lights started to intermittently stay on eventually burning out brake bulbs. then frying the part that the bulb goes into. i am not driving the vehicle now because i feel there's a potential for fire the vehicle was always in motion when the lights came on and brake lights stayed on. i can't get them to go off even with the car stopped and turned off.

Abs and emergency brake lights came on. turned vehicle off, waited briefly, and turned the vehicle back on, lights weren't visible. next errand run of the day, got a couple of miles away from the house, when the lights came back on. went into store, came back out, started the vehicle, and lights stayed off.

Abs and brake light came on took it to ford dealer said its the abs ecu box. they always having this problem with a wire inside the box coming lose

I bought the van from someone drove from a hour fourtyfive min away from home got almost home and the brake light came on bk light on right went out seats stop working they electrical and the heat mess up very unpleased cause i have kids i drive to school everyday

Check traction control warning signal, break light, abs light, trac off light, and tire pressure light came on. speedomoter stopped working, tachometer stopped working, vehicle would not shift when necessary. local mechanic said it was a failure in the abs pump and abs electrical system. *js

When driving the van at 50 mph the yellow abs warning light came on, took to the garage , said abs system gave 8 codes but they couldn't pin point a problem, light went off on its own and van regained abs function , and now randomly the light comes on and the abs is deactivated. *tr

Abs light went off. brakes suddenly became less effective on the snow laden icy pavement. temporarily lost control of vehicle. *tr

The check traction control comes on..... brake light, abs light and traction off light keep coming on intermittently. turn off ignition and then they go off for a short time then back on. *tr

My abs and brake light came on and stayed on. there is nothing wrong with my brakes or abs. i have the codes read by a mechanic and it said the rear abs sensor was bad. i got it replaced and it never fixed the issue. so i had it read again by a mechanic and it said the same thing. *tr

Abs light has been on for a few days now. took the vehicle to get serviced, abs light on panel and brakes squeaking. reliable mechanic shop informed me that the vehicles brakes were fine and no replacement is needed, but that my abs would not function properly. i was told the abs light was electrical and that it would cost a lot to fix.the brakes have failed twice recently with brakes locking and no abs. after researching i see the abs warning light is an issue with this vehicle and numerous complaints have been made. please make a recall. *tr

Abs and brake lights keep coming on and off. also have shaking in suspension front and back. dealer conducted the back axle repair but the vehicle still has a little shake with new tires and front end alignment. *tr

Abs light, brake light, tail light, tire pressure light all came on. *tr

Vehicle had a recall on the speed control deactivation switch (scds) in 2009, repair was done by installing jumper as scds was not leaking. took vehicle to dealer as brake light was on. found leaking scds to be problem. ford contacted to cover repair as scds was known to be bad when recalled in 2009, but was not leaking. the leaking scds caused the jumper (installed during recall) to go bad and leak brake fluid out of scds. ford advised that "sorry, there is nothing we can do because the recall had been done." customer care personnel elevated concern to supervisor, who also reiterated ford's stance that the original recall had been performed and there was nothing that could be done. our concern is for the safety of my family and children who get taken around in this vehicle. ford kept saying, "sorry..." case was closed with no action on safety issue. i guess loss of brake fluid from a known bad part is of no concern to ford. repair for bad part and previously recalled part and labor was over $200. ford knew part would leak and advised dealers to replace scds if leaking during inspections. for knew the texas instruments part was bad, but only changed the ones leaking. if it leaked after the recall work was done, it would be the customer's responsibility. *tr

Brake lights went on as well as abs lights and traction control lights, vehicle started to brake on its own while driving about 40 miles an hour. this happened twice for a few seconds and then i had control again. very scary.... *tr

Abs brake light and parking brake light came on driving down the highway and remain on at this time. the brakes were recently serviced and currently there is nothing wrong with them. there is concern for vehicle safety and braking system. it is unknown if this is a error in the module and abs still work or if abs is disabled. ford was contacted and made aware of the issues. based on the complaints for this vehicle ford is well aware of the concerns for safety, but as of this date but have yet to issue a recall. there is also a noise coming from the undercarriage that is associated with the steering column. there have been recalls on this as well, however, my vehicle was not in the recall. ford may want to extend the recall to other windstar vins. *tr

Abs brake system failure, on the master cylinder there is a leak, the rear brakes fail to work at all and the ecu sensor does not work. *tr

Abs light on dash and brake light on for no reason. *tr

The abs warning light and parking brake light both illuminated, and according to the manual that indicates that the abs system was not functional. both lights now come on and turn off (always in unison) randomly and with no apparent reason. *tr

The abs lights are illuminated stating that the ecu master relay is not getting power. this comes and goes. *tr

Turned on van with all this occurring at once: "check transmission", speedometer not working (reads 0mph), "abs" light stays on, "brake" light stays on, "o/d off" light flashing, "trac off" light illuminated, "fuel computer data error", "oil life data error", "traction control data error", outside temperature "error", odometer malfunction reads "-----------", cruise control not working, ac not cold, hot air not hot. *tr

Anti-lock braking system, error 1185, power relay output circuit failure. *tr

Abs light goes on. mechanics clear the error and cannot find a cause. it goes on again later. goes off sometimes when you stop and restart vehicle. *tr

The traction control and abs lights go on. now the abs does not function properly when warmer weather. reading only has shown the ecm has a faulty solder joint that wears down in summer. it is intermittent issue, but large safety risk. *tr

Anti-lock brake light and brake warning light come on intermittently. code c1185 is present. *tr

We were headed home on the freeway and turned onto our exit. my husband put his foot on the brake to start slowing the van down, but the pedal did nothing. he was able to stop the van by coasting and switching into reverse. he then got out and checked fluid which was full and checked the brake lines which were fine. there was no warning signs or anything that our brakes were going to fail. i am just glad that we were already at our exit and there was no other traffic! we had our 5 children in the van with us at the time. i have been researching and reading about the abs problems in our year windstar and am hoping ford decides to take some action on the matter! *tr

My 2001 windstar started having electrical problems a couple weeks after i had all the other recalls taken care of. i turned the van on and all my needles went crazy darting back and forth, and my driver door censors aren't working now. the next day was the same and my abs and brake lights on the dash are on and won't turn off. i have also had to keep my interior lights turned off completely because at any given time my vans door censors will decided that the door isn't closed. this is the second windstar i have owned and at this point i will never buy another ford. the safety of my children and myself is much more important. *tr

Abs warning light, large red brake light turned on in instrument panel plus increased brake stopping distance. problem intermittent. *tr

During the course of normal driving, on a ford windstar with less than 100k miles, the abs system failed. the abs/tc/e-brake lights all came on, permanently. i had to have the system replaced, at extensive cost. in online research it turns out this is a fairly common problem, potentially due to leaking fluid from the scds component. nhtsa please make ford deal with this! *tr

Abs, traction control, cruise control and speedometer either are intermittent or not working at all. this causes issues with braking, vehicle control, driver attentiveness and other safety related issues. *tr

The abs and the parking brake lights both came on while driving. after having the codes scanned, there were nine codes. c1185,c1198,c1194,c1254,c1246,c1250,c1242,c121 andc1210. there doesn't seem to be any issue with the brakes not working. i read several threads about bad solder joints. *tr

The abs and brake light goes off and on, mostly on all the time on the dash , will not get a state inspection like this.........what can you do to slove this for me [xxx].... information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

During normal operation of vehicle at posted driving speed limits the vehicles abs, brake warning lights have continuously come on after driving begins. it has been also noted that after several brake service inspections and repairs at major auto repair shops, such as midas, carx , and pep boys. technicians have observed that the brake systems major components and hardware appeared to have failed due to high levels of corrosion and easily rusting parts such as brake shoes, pads, wheel cylinders, brake drums, brake line hoses and connectors. each of these repair shops have informed me that the repair/ replacement of many of these vital components would be extremely costly to repair and could result in serious injuries or create a hazardous situation for the vehicle's operator and other drivers if not repaired immediately. the vehicles brakes and hardware have been replaced more than three times by asae certified /qualified mechanics and the brake systems warning lights continuously remain on during regular operation. the rear brakes are grinding and wearing the brake shoes down much faster than they did before even after repairs have been completed. currently when applying the brakes before coming to a full stop the brake peddle must be applied at a distance of at least 30 seconds sooner to ensure a safe stop. i do believe that there is a high risk of concern in the failure of the ford windstar brake system operations and a thorough inspection of the abs system and brakes including its major components should be inspected immediately to prevent a serious accident or injuries to the vehicle's operator and to protect the safety of the general public. *js

I was driving my ford windstar 2001 when the brakes failed. the cruise control stop working and the abs and the brake lights came on. the brakes became soft causing me being unable to stop the van. *js

I didn't have a crash i noticed that my abs brake and tire pressure light was staying on and a short time after i started hearing a loud rumbling noise in the front end every time i slow an it's impossible to make sudden stops and at times my speedometer starts flickering back and forth as well as my cruise control is currently inoperable. i have limited driving this vehicle in which i purchased due to feeling it is not in a safe manner for my children to be in. i have had several shops as well as individuals that told me these areas are common to go out on this specific vehicle and that there is possible recall. i just want to be able to drive my van with out worrying if i'm going to be able to come to a stop when needed as well as not knowing if i could possible break down or something break in the front end while i am driving at somewhat high speeds. thank you and hope to hear from someone soon in regards to this situation! *tr

My abs light is on and have heard it is from ecu master relay has a bad soldier joint which fails prematurely and causes the abs light and dtc c1185. it also causes the enhanced abs braking system to become inoperable. *tr

The abs light comes on frequently while driving. sometimes it causes the regular brake light and/or low tire pressure light to come on (even though tire pressure is fine.) many times it happens when hitting a bump in the road. my dealer mentioned that the ecm module is returning many different codes with different meanings, indicating that the ecm module very likely has a bad connection on it. the dealer did not fix it yet, but warned me that i am currently driving without antilock brakes most of the time. *tr

After running/driving my van for about 10 mins. the "abs" and the "brake" lights show up on my dashboard. my brakes make a screeching noise when i apply the brake and a grinding noise as well. my main concern is the safety of my family while i'm driving my van with them in it. please inform me of how to take care of these problems. thank you for your time. *tr

My vehicle has a abs fault light caused by a faulty ecu master relay. this causes the abs and brake fault lights to light on my dash board. the fault code reads c1185 from the engine diagnostics. this has rendered my abs system inoperable. *tr

Abs light and brake light keeps coming on then off. *tr

Arrived at destinations and stopped. tried to leave, brakes had not released and would not release.. had to drive home against the brakes which were smoking upon arrival at home. next day, brakes went back to normal. two days later, same occurrence. brakes would not release, overheated, brake pedal pushed hard up with all brakes applied. nest morning after cool down, brake pedal resting on floor; would not pump up; no brakes. since i have owned this vehicle, brake and abs indicators come on for no apparent reason, i.e., 3 drops of rain on windshield and indicators come on. ford dealer was made aware of this, said it was an ecu problem and did nothing about it, saying it would cost me about $700 to fix. *tr
