The shackle on the left rear spring totally broke off of vehicle. the shackle on the right side is almost totally detached. there is no way to attach new shackles because the truck frame is totally rotted away. also much to my amazement the spare tire which was suspended underneath the pickup bed is gone. where it was attached is all rotted away so at some point it just fell off when we were driving, don't know where or when. today i talked to the service dept of the ford dealer where the truck was purchased and ford is not doing anything about this. they said we have this problem with shackles all the time. they rust out. my mechanic, who discovered the problem said he see this a lot on all models of fords pickups. my brother in law has a toyota tacoma pickup which just failed a safety inspection because of a rotted frame. toyota is replacing his frame free of charge. i feel that is what ford should be forced to do. i thank god the other shackle didn't give way while my wife was driving it on the highway and have a serious accident.

We have a 99 ford ranger bought brand new. it is in mint condition and has only approx. 80,000 miles on it. we just noticed that the frame was cracked and ready to split in half. we contacted ford motor co., they said there was nothing they could do about it that the warranty was over. they wouldn't even look at the vehicle. this vehicle has a defective frame and if, it was not noticed, we could have been killed. this is a safety issue and there may be more vehicles out there that could have the same problem. there was no accident, but there could have been if it wasn't noticed. *tr

No accident. i have a 1999 ford ranger that was making strange noises from the bed. my husband and brother-in-law investigated and one jumped on the bed while the other looked under the truck. he noticed that the frame is completely rusted through on one side and almost all the way through on the other side. that was two years ago and the truck remains parked in the side yard. *tr
Dt*: the contact stated the metal frame on the rear passenger side deteriorated. as a result, the bumper hangs down from the frame. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection; however no repairs were made. when the vehicle wa sparked the passenger side of rear bumper was hanging down because the passenger's side frame was rusted. however, the driver's side frame and the vehicle's body were not rusted. the local ford dealer could not find time to view the vehicle, but offered $1000 of the $3500 repair cost if repaired at the ford dealership. contact rejected it claiming it was a factory defect. *ak

I noticed that there was a recall of the 2001 ford ranger for the very same problem my truck seeme to have. nhtsa#:00v394000. i was driving when the hood snapped open. i could have very easily been in a head-on collision when my entire view was blocked with the hood. i have taken some pictures of the hood area if they are needed. the repair shop said that one of the screws came loose at some point in time and with the vibration. the wire formed hood striker snapped from metal fatigue. anyway this whole ordeal is costing me about $1300 not mentioned that i could have been killed. mr
I feel that my ford ranger is an unsafe vehicle. i have had many problems with it since i bought it brand new. everything stemming from holes in the floor to a faulty transmission and engine among faulty power windows and electrical on more than one occasion.. i just wonder what is next. i am worried about the future of this vehicle especially with its past track record. please send me any information that may be of help to get ford to buy my vehicle back. my email is [email protected] or [email protected].
Running boards are unsafe. they are located too far under the vehicle, making them very awkward and dangerous to use, forcing the occupant to twist their ankle to enter the vehicle. when exiting the vehicle, they are not visible from the interior, forcing the occupant to guess where they are, which makes them useless and dangerous. because the steps are not visible from inside the vehicle, small children can easily miss the step and fall from the vehicle. *ak
I had made my first appointment after signing the papers, purchasing the 99 ford ranger. i thought these things can be taken care after the first appointment. i had gone by the dealership 4 times, and can't get any of these taken care off. 5800 miles later, i still have these problems. the body shop manager said he isn't set up like the manufaturer, and the service manager is full of i'm sorries. larry kramer is the engineer representative with ford. i have asked the dealer to replace the vehicle , they said i am sorry we already got your check from the bank, and we would not be able to replace this truck. larry kramer would not give me any straight answers. he was ready to fight, i do'nt know what to do with this truck . i am concerned for my safety! *ak
