We have classified the 4 complaints from 1999 Ford Ranger about STRUCTURE into the following categories.
I have a 1999 ford ranger and the frame is shot starting to crack it's so thin and like post i can almost bend it with my hands .
Spare tire fell off in street, then gas tank, whole frame is rotten, was driving down a road,
Frame rust under drivers and riders doors. rest of truck looks beautiful and i take great care of the truck!!!
Drivers side frame has completely rusted through. found during inspection.
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 ford ranger. while inspecting the vehicle, it was discovered that the rear section of the subframe was rusted and corroded. the cause of the failure was not diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure, the local dealer was not notified. the failure mileage was 192,000.
The frame is rusting away. both leaf spring shackles rusted completely through, muffler hangers all rusted off lost my muffler on a road.
Frame rot... the frame has rusted from the inside-out in the same place on both sides of the vehicle: under the most-front part of each door (keep in mind this is the frame i'm talking about, not any kind of door support or framing... this is the section of body frame that is located underneath each door on the vehicle). the frame has rusted and begun to split horizontally (the length of the vehicle) and vertically (from the ground-up). when lifting the vehicle in certain places, the frame can be seen bending, obviously. because of this i can only jack/lift the vehicle from the very front... all other places that i've tried to lift from result in too much weight being put on those weak points. i am now very seriously considering a new frame, which is a lot of money... or, at the very least, a lot of time and effort to pull a frame off of a vehicle from a junkyard, then put it on my vehicle (or rather, put my vehicle on it). frame failure could result in catastrophe or death, and this frame is in very bad shape compared to most vehicles it's age (and many that are older).
My 1999 ford ranger just failed inspection for structural reasons. truck runs perfect with only 107k miles on it. the truck is rotting away !! gas tank falling off. rear bumper falling off. tail gate rotted. significant rot in frame and shocks. spare tire ready to just fall from cheap strap that is rotted. this really is unsafe situation. i called ford and filed complaint but was told nothing they can do. i will never buy another ford!! a happy customer tells 2 people,an unhappy customer tells 100 people. i really can not believe these vehicles were not recalled. very unsafe.
Frame rusted into
The bed is rusting off the ford ranger pt . to where , the bed needs to be removed from the back , and redone !!! this vehicle was not made well for cusumers ppl can't always afford what the company has done . its not fair too put a vehicle out and we have to pay out of pocket for fords poor work when making this vehicle.
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 ford ranger. while the vehicle was being inspected, the mechanic noticed that the subframe was rusted. the vehicle was repaired; however, the frame fell off. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
Rear frame and rear cross member have rusted out.. the spare tire holder is unusable. vehicle should be recalled for frame replacement.
Perforated frame on the left rear frame near the front of the leaf spring, rear frame horn where bumper attaches is perforated also. sections of frame will have to be welded in to keep vehicle in a safe condition.
The frame at the right front suspension pocket rusted out. upper control arm rear bracket is completely detached. drove the truck to my destination with no issues, on the return trip it felt "floaty" as if it was out of alignment while i was driving down a town road. there was no bump or audible noise prior to or accompanying the issue. body has very minimal rust, the rest of the frame appears solid. truck has 104,660 miles.
Frame and frame supports have rusted quickly over the last few years. more than i would expect.
My frame is rusting out! i was having problems filling my gas tank so i brought it in to the shop to find that where the gas tank supports attached to the frame had rusted out. my gas tank was hanging on by a thread. i had to have the whole thing removed, repaired, and replaced.
My complaint is just how rusted away the frame is on my 1999 ranger, the body of the truck is real nice. but the frame is rusting away, the rear bumper broke off on the drivers side, the spare tire can no longer be mounted underneath where it belongs, due to the rust. the frame rail has a foot long rust hole on the passenger side and the drivers side rail is cracked and rusted almost in two pieces. just seems like the frame is totally rusting away, never had a vehicle with this kind of rust problem. i afraid to drive it on the highway.
My 1999 ford ranger frame is rusting in several location which will make it very unsafe the body looks brand new but the front frame and rear frame are rusting away. the shocks on the front right side are about the break through the support and the upper control arm is about the break off.
Upon inspection mechanic said "shackles , frame, leafsprings, all rusted and truck will not last. motor runs great, body no rust.
Took to get inspected mechanic said frame was in bad shape. i had 5 different people tell me it was beyond repair. *tr
This winter while washing the undercarriage of my 1999 ranger, i noticed the frame at the drivers side rear shock mount is rusted through. after further inspection, i see that the frame at the rear bumper mounts is also severely rusted. the bed supports that run perpendicular to the frame are also severely rusted. *tr
I have owned 4 rangers over the past 15 years, a 1995, 1998,1999,and a 2001 and all 4 trucks have had the leaf spring hangers rot off . my latest truck the leaf spring hanger and now the frame has rotted away there is no way this is an isolated incident. the internet is full of comments about this problem. it is my understanding that tundras had a recall on this same issue. why is it different for a ranger? *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 ford ranger. the contact stated that there was extensive rust near the rear frame close to the leaf springs. there was also excessive rust on the rear passenger side. the contact further inspected the rear frame and determined that it fractured due to the failure. the vehicle has remained parked in the contact's driveway since the failure was identified. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was not available.
For the second time as far as i know the rear frame (rear spring shackles and spear tire holder specifically) have and are being replaced because they have rusted and they tore apart. as i was driving i hit a regular bump in the road. i was driving about 35 to 45 mph on the way to work. well it sounded like it hit pretty hard, as i was driving i noticed the trucks performance was lacking. so, went to work, got out of work and on the way back home i noticed the samething with the performance of the truck. it was lacking in a big way. as i was pulling into the driveway i heard a large clunk sound. the next day i had a prior appointment at my transmission shop. as the mechanics put it on the lift "the rear axle dropped to the full extent of the shock absorber and busting their seals. because the shackle broke it was causing the axle to twist while i was driving given the truck the bad performance, bad steering, and giving the transmission a pulsating affect. also the engine lost the power giving the truck resistance and using more gas. so i am replacing both shackles, both shock absorbers, and the spear tire mechanism. at the same time i will be sanding the frame down, and coating all parts (cleaning and coating parts) with bedliner coating to hopefully stop the rust. the parts that i am replacing are also replacement parts because they are bolted on to the frame instead of riveted like the originals were. also the steel seams to be thinner in the rear than the front and middle. *tr
I tried to get my 99 ranger inspected when they put it on the lift a big chunk of the frame fell to the ground .upon further inspection there were holes in the right side frame next to the rear spring shackles and the gas tank straps were rusted out of the frame .the garage owner taped the frame with a ball peen hammer and found more holes on the left side and the right front under the air conditioner .i could not drive the truck home it was so unsafe i can't believe the frame did not brake when i was driving it .if i was to get into an accident with the truck in that condition the frame would have crumpled up like tin foil .reading the complaints here i'm not alone .the truck was taken care of washed all the time if ford is going to sell trucks in new york they better be safer .i will never buy another ford . *tr
I noticed heavy rust scale on ground and inspected to see my spare tire was missing, there is a large hole rusted all the way thru the frame in front of the left rear spring shackle and a crack in the frame in front of the front shackle almost all the way around the channel. further investigation showed all cross members, gas tank strap and bed supports are severely rusted and the right side frame rail following suit with the left frame rail. the remainder of the truck is in very good condition this should not happen to a truck with this age and mileage. *tr
wv state inspection found the rear frame and spring hangers rusted to the point of rendering the truck unsafe. the rest of the truck is rust-free and in great condition. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 ford ranger. the contact stated that the bolts behind the rear wheels that were connected to the bed of the vehicle were completely rusted. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer for a routine inspection when the dealer advised him of the failure. the dealer stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 102,000. *tr
Rear of truck is rotting away to nothing. had the rear of the frame plated a few years ago where the shackle brackets bolt on. now i noticed one of the fuel tank straps hanging. the crossmember that holds it is rotted away to nothing. took the truck to my mechanic. he called me after about an hour & told me the truck was junk. the whole frame & crossmembers from the cab back are rusted horribly. he told me not to even drive the truck because it wasn't safe. *tr
The far rear right spring shackle and mount fell out of the truck. i felt the body fall and heard a bang and in the mirror saw something fall on the ground. after investigating i found that those parts had rotted out and fell out. the spring was resting on the bottom of the truck bed. i'm a mechanic, so i got the parts to fix it, but found that as i took apart the frame parts, the frame had rusted through on both sides of the spring mount. the left side, though the shackle mount had not rotted off yet, was in bad shape. when i got the left side spring mount off, the frame was rotted through behind it and had rusted through on both sides of the spring mount. this isn't going to last long. infact i'm looking into my options for repair. ford should be made responsible for this. there is no way a truck frame should melt like this. to remove the rivots used from the factory to mount the frame parts, i used an air chisel. the vibration caused massive amounts of rust flakes to fall off of other parts of the frame, some an eighth in thick and the size of a large tire patch. this makes me wonder if the rest of the frame is safe to use.! if you go to a junk yard you can find truck frames that are 40 years old that don't have this kind of rot!!! please press ford to do something about this...thank you. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 ford ranger. the contact stated that the rear frame was rusted out. the failure was persistent and the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 143,000.
frame has rotted out behind the rear shackle mount and around the gas tank strap the whole rear section of frame is very thin and rusted and showing signs of deterioration all within 75k miles truck is only a 99 and has spent most of its life garaged by previous owner am surprised as to the amount of rot in the frame on such a low miles truck. *tr
Structure, frame rusted, front bumper rusted from inside. rear spring suport rusted. gas filler door rusted. *tr
While driving on the highway, i was having difficulty steering. the car was pulling to the left and i had to pull over because it was too difficult to manage. upon inspection, the right front tire was toed-in and the upper tire stabilizer arm broke away from the frame at the bracket. the bracket attaching the arm to the frame had snapped. the frame itself just below that bracket was cracked with severe rot on both sides. the rest of the truck is in perfect condition except for the frame. i was told that this cannot be fixed. *tr
Shackles, frame ,frame brackets and bumpers rusted . shackle brackets and rear frame brackets broke into when raising truck on lift. *tr
I was driving in the freeway i-275 nb nof howard avenue tampa florida i heard a noise to the front of small truck, after that i saw black smoke from front of truck i put to car a safety place of the freeway of truck is turn off itself. i have not time take off of keys from of truck of only time is took my bags ,open the door and get out the truck and all contents were burned in the fire. additional i have the truck for 4 months ago only and i need to help, because i have insurance but only liability coverage and no full cover, in which i have to continue to pay to the dealer $6,000 dollars from my pocket. thank you for your attention for my case. but thank you so much to my god a still with live and my boyfriend. thank you again. You guys should make ford motors replace every single frame on ford ranger pick ups. i have one now that i am trying to fix and it is just incredible the amount of rust and holes that are in a truck that is barely ten years old. *tr
It was revealed to me that my bumper appeared to be falling off. a closer inspection showed that the rear portion of the frame has rotted. the bumper mount has deteriorated and no longer supports the bumper. the shock mounts appear to be hazardous as well. the vehicle has been garage kept and has never been involved in a rear end collision. as i have researched this problem online, it seems to be a major problem with this years model of the ford ranger. *tr *js
The frame is rusting away! spring supports rear shackles rusted out! ps. should have bought a toyota!!!! *kb
The frame keeps cracking at the passengers side shock mount and working its way to the front of the truck. i have welded it several times in the past 2 months and cracking in different spots. alot of people are having the same problems.my frame is about to snap in half. the truck only has 124,000 miles on it. its pretty much the same as toyota's frame recall. *tt
Truck lost brakes while going downhill. frame corrosion had caused right spring hanger to fail, and corroded brake line burst. i was able to pump the brake pedal and avoid an accident. brake warning light came on after the incident. mechanic put the truck on a lift, and identified severe corrosion to the brake lines, differential, frame, and several other undercarriage components. truck had been undercoated and washed regularly, and has less than 105,000 miles. mechanic suggested all new brake lines, total frame, and rear end replacement. *tr
Was told that the truck can no longer pass pennsylvania inspection due to rusting of the frame brackets which hold transmission support sub frame. *tr
I have a 1999 ford ranger 4 dr. super cab. if you look at this truck on the exterior/interior you would think it was 3-4 years old!! absolutely gorgeous, you know this truck is cared for extremely well!! however put it up on a lift and you would swear it was sitting in a salt field for 20 years!! absolutely ridiculous! all cross members are completely de-tached from frame, tank straps are gone, the only thing holding up my gas tank is the skid plate! the spare tire hanger and c-member is rotted completely, and the rear c-member is almost rotted. was told by my independent mechanic , the only thing holding frame together is the bumper!! rocker panels are in great cond., body is wonderful!!. this is crazy, how can ford do this and get away with this?? toyota stood up as a company and took care of there responsibilities!! guess that just shows who cares about standing behind there consumers.this is incredibly frustrating to know you have a beautiful vehicle that runs top-notch, that you absolutely adore and you have been told you probably can't drive it on the road because of premature rotted out frame!! yeah that's right pre-mature!!! i have seen 25-30 year old vehicles that were not this bad. i owned a 1984 ford ranger that was in better shape than this underneath!! what did ford used to do in the past with there frames?? well ,, figure it out and do it again!! that's not all you can't order the c-members from ford! are you kidding me! don't build it right, then screw you on replacement parts! i believe ford should step and fix these frames the way a company should fulfill there responsibilities! if toyota can do it so can we on this side of the ocean!! i would love to drive my ranger for awhile longer, and with the breakdown and reputation of these frames on this particular truck ford should assume responsibility! *tr
I have seen multiple 99 ford ranger, and every one i have seen is rusted out. frame, rear bumper & bed. there are other places rusted but not as bad as the frame, rusted in half, rear bumper fell off going down the road, other thinga that bolt under the bed fell out. *tr
1999 ford ranger with 130,000 miles. leaf springs rusted out (both sides) and mounting brackets also rusted. went to 3 autobody shops and nobody would touch it. bumper just rusted out on both sides and spare tire well is completely rusted. bumper and spare currently being held together with 2, 1900 lb chains. ranger runs fine just body falling apart. very concerned tire, bumper may become dislodged and cause further damage to myself or others. gas tank also rusted but not leaking so far. *tr
The spare tire was noticed to be missing and the rear bumper was found to have extremely weak mounting. upon inspection the entire rear section of the frame had severe rust thru. the bell shaped piece that holds the spare tire under the truck had rusted and collapsed. the spare tire fell from the vehicle at an unknown date and speed. the cross member holding up the fuel take was extremely rusted, and would have failed in the near future. the frame at the rear bumper mounting location was rusted and would have caused the rear bumper to detach from vehicle in the near future. the right side shock mount was rusted completely off. the spare tire had fallen, which could have caused an accident, and the gas tank and rear bumper were close to falling off, which would have also caused an accident. *tr
The frame near my back wheels is completely rusted out and there is now a big crack on both sides of the frame. the rust amounts are excessive, and in my opinion seem to be a failure in design of the frame. the truck has only 105,000 miles on it and the frame in that section of the car has serious rust while the rest of the car looks good. all of the connections in the back have a lot of rust, more than can be attributed to poor maintenance. if i hadn't seen this crack developing in the frame a serious accident could have resulted. i feel ford should be held accountable for a faulty product
First failure was where leaf springs attach to frame (rear shackles) failed due to rust and put hole in truck bed. replaced parts. second failure is when filling tank with fuel; gas has started to run out on the ground at the gas station. just received filler neck today to replace current rusted one. while under vehicle noticed tank strap is hanging loose not attached due to connection point rusted off (similar failure to nhtsa recall campaign #11v385000 fuel tank strap failure). also noticed severe rust like little or no rust inhibitor was applied to frame and components. shield above muffler is almost non-existent, frame cross member is flaking away due to rust. i am not qualified to provide full details of problems or cause but rust is becoming a safety issue with this vehicle. contacted ford and they say vehicle is not part of recall. *tr
1999 ford ranger rear frame section rotted behind rear shackle mount. broke off and caused rear axle to become disconnected from the rear frame section. bumper fell to the ground. *tr
1999 ford ranger xlt 4wd,vin [xxx], frame rusted almost in half on the left rear, just ahead of rear axle. large portion of outside frame rail is missing. rear spring shackles replace 1 year ago. truck is in excellent condition otherwise, with the exception of severe rust on the rear portion of frame, which renders the truck useless. any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated. i've done alot of research on this problem and have found it to be very commonplace with this type of vehicle. i cannot drive it because of this safety problem. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
