Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2005 Ford Mustang

There is an apparent design flaw in 2005 mustangs as i have read hundreds of similar complaints as to what i am experiencing. due to this design flaw after a recent day of heavy rain 1 headlight and 1 signal light will not turn off once the car has been shut off. i researched and apparently the smart junction box (sjb) got wet and the electrical unit is now malfunctioning. there was also a strong burning smell when i got home that night as well. spoke with an online mechanic technician and he confirmed that the sjb needs to be replaced. there has been a long history of the car leaking on the passenger side whenever it rains due to the design flaw. also my gas gauge never reads properly, inside lights are also dim/off and the check engine light has been going on and off for nearly a year and my mechanic could not diagnose why the reviews online said when they spoke to ford that admitted that it was a known problem but because there has been no recall that they will not repair this for free. estimates i read put the cost around $1000 to get this fixed and do not want to pay that kind of money especially when ford admits to knowing there is a problem. i am hopeful that we can get ford to do the right thing and issue a recall for this. it is a serious problem since the electrical system can cause a fire from reports i have read. this happened to meet on 12/21/18. i was driving home from work and parked the car and shut it off. as i locked the car i noticed that the drivers side headlight and passenger side signal light stayed on and i had to disconnect the battery to make them shut off. also there was a strong burning odor when i lifted the hood.

The 2005 to 2009 mustangs (all of them) have a water intrusion problem presented as a design flaw in the engine firewall that leaks water onto the smart junction block causing random electrical systems failure including the loss of engine ignition, loss of all systems, etc. in my case, the intrusion of water caused a sudden and complete loss of all systems. discovered a day after heavy rain. there are thousands of reports of this on the web and the dealer admits it is a design flaw and known problem.

I purchased my car new march 1, 2005. i have done all of the suggested maintenance through the dealer. in 2011 - water pouring in under dash front passenger floor. i took the car to the dealer and they couldn't find the leak. i started to wet vacuuming the water out. then the car started to smell like mold. i finally called my nephew who works for ford in another city. he cleaned out the drain in front of the passenger side and dried out the car. why didn't the mechanic at landmark know about the drain? around this time the car started to lock and unlock itself while parked in the driveway. called dealer no help. called nephew he said wiring issue. the locking and unlocking stopped. since then the locks try to relock anytime i accelerated from a full stop. i have found my windows rolled down. i never leave my windows down. i am a big stickler when it comes to locking my car up and i don't leave my windows down. it happened again this last week. next came the trunk. it would unlock while i was driving. finally removed the fuse to make it stop. the next fail was the instrument cluster. nothing works right. sporadically the speedometer works but can stop any time. luckily the odometer works so i use the trip meter to know when to get gas. right now my car lies dead in the driveway. the cd changer started shuffling cd's when the car was running or parked. problem was it had not been turned on. i have on occasion smelled smoke in the car while driving. from researching the internet, evidently there is an issue with the electrical system shorting out due to water getting into the fuse box due to the drain on the passenger side. my car only has 107000 miles on it. ford knows about this issue and has know. they need to make it right. oh and to top it off, i took it to a ford specialist and they said it was the alternator. $370 later my car is still dead.

My instrument cluster does not work and ford needs to have a recall with all the complaints with all the 05 mustang owners.

Ever since i got my mustang the fuel gauge was acting up and would sometimes give me a correct reading but most of the time it just sits at empty even after refueling. then just recently i started driving into work when i noticed that my speedometer said i was doing about 100 mph on city streets and confirmed it was inaccurate when i came to a stoplight and came to a complete stop but the speedometer read 50 mph. when i got to work i stopped the engine and started it back up and i had to repeat this process 7-8 times to get it to reset back to 0 mph this was the first time that occurred since i got it. *tr

I purchased my 2005 ford mustang v6 automatic transmission in july of 2016. at the time of purchase everything seemed to be working fine but about a month later i noticed the fuel gauge was sitting at e so i attempted to fill it thinking i had an empty tank which meant i should have been able to put 14-16 gallons in and as i was refueling i noticed it kept shutting off even though i had just started the pump eventually i got it filled and only put in about 6 gallons which i thought was odd but i went with it and got back in my car started it up and noticed that the gauge was still sitting at e at that point i knew something was wrong but i figured it could wait since i knew how far i could potentially go on a full tank but then after i left and headed for home i noticed that my speedometer said i was going 60 but everyone was blowing past me at least 10mph faster when the speed limit was 60. so i pulled over and noticed that at a stop the speedometer came to rest at 35mph i was able to fix it but it kept happening i was lucky enough that i didnt get pulled over because i had no idea how fast i was going. then for a while that stopped happening but every now and then and at an increasing rate the engine keeps stalling like its not getting enough fuel when i stop at an intersection or stop sign even though i had just filled the fuel tank the day before and hadn't driven more than 50 miles. the mileage at the time of the incidents beginnings was ~24,000 miles the current mileage is 34,000 as of 5/15/17.

Had the airbag replaced/ weeks later had the "faulty seal" problem followed by the "sjm " box (smart junction box) destroyed by the water damage due to faulty seal. now the sjm is on backorder until aug. 2016. seal already replaced in march/2016 when order placed for sjb. researching the problem there are thousands of complaints regaurding 05-07 mustang models. due to make design. unfortunately, resulting in window motor failure, battery drain, headlights stuck on high beams, turn signals stuck on, insturment cluster malfunction and dash lights fail. i have searched for any recall information and civil suite/ class action. the dangers and the numbers are clear, ford needs to be investigated on this matter. the ford customers deserve to be compensated for their losses and damages. especially in the case of individuals whom are waiting for the sjm box to be manufactured due to shortage of materials.

This 2005 mustang was bought used about a year and a half ago. within a few months we noticed the messenger side floor would be wet when it rained. soon after the speedometer quit working. the extended warranty did not cover the repair. a few months later the heat and air control unit went out. these two repairs cost over a thousand dollars to fix. on october 102015 while at the drive up teller at a bank the car would not come out of park. tried shutting it off but would not restart. seemed to have complete electrical failure. no lights gauges or anything electrical would work. it was raining. after jumping the car several times we were able to get it home. we inspected the ecu and found green and white corrosion indicating water had been getting inside the box. when i called ford they took a report but said they would not fix the problem unless there was a recall. there is a technical service bulletin issued tsb 07-14-6

Defect in under cowl drainage leads to rainwater leaking into passenger compartment. water drains down wiring harness into the smart junction box casing electrical shorts that at first caused the right headlamp to shutdown after 15 seconds. recycling the headlight switch brings the headlight back on for another 15 seconds. this condition renders the vehicle unsafe to operate from sunset to sunrise. now the drivers side headlamp has begun the same problem. i checked online and it is apparent that this is a significant safety issue for which the vehicle manufacturer has no part available to fix. they initially informed me that the smj would be available to purchase last september. that has now been pushed back to february of 2016. they want over $400 for the part plus additional labor to program and install a component that should have been recalled years ago. this problem is already covered under a tsb and the defect can cause a multitude of malfunctions that could easily result in life threatening situations. i just recently checked and found over 286 reports on file with nhtsa, yet no apparent investigations appear to have been conducted, nor a recall. it is my sincer hope that nhtsa is not waiting for a body count before taking action. http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forums/2005-2010-mustang-talk/301555-pics-vid-2005-dash-water-leak-fix.html#/forumsite/20799/topics/301555?page=1 https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rwsgwtizix5qu_tgsnhlx4mwgnsuji-zs6pjwsa_sre/mobilebasic?pli=1

Speedometer not functioning. while driving 30mph will register as 50mph or while driving 60pmh will register as 120mph. emissions trouble light will periodically go on. *tr

. i got in my car an started the engine. i then noticed my fuel gauge and speedometer were not working at all. i have always taken care of my mustang an i think ford should recall the cluster. there's been plenty of 2005 models with very same issue. please recall the gauge cluster it's the right thing to do for a big name company like ford. original owner. *tr

The speedometer were not working at all. i read in very forum that 2005 models with very same issue. think ford should recall the cluster. i read this in other complain and my opinion is the same. "please recall the gauge cluster it's the right thing to do for a big name company like ford. original owner". *tr

They get stuck especially in cooler weather. the tach is now stuck hanging in the down position. the odometer can go anywhere from 20 to 40 mph faster than i am going. when stopped it will be in that position. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford mustang. when the vehicle was started, the speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, and temperature gauge failed. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 84,000. updated 03/09/16*lj

Speedometer and tachometer needle does not function correctly. speedometer does not move half the time from resting position and the tachometer will rotate all the way around and stay where it is when the car is turned off. the battery, oil, and temp needles do not move from off position half the time. transmission does not shift smoothly and shifts harder going from second to third. *tr

The speedometer on my ford saleen mustang 2005 recently has stopped working properly, the needle on the speedometer sits on 10 mph when idling, when i accelerate the needle is off by 10 mph, this is a safety issue, not knowing how fast you are traveling. i have looked up if there are any recalls available through the web and have only found similar issues on forums. *tr

Instrument cluster (panel) - speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge all not working. can't tell how fast i am going or how much gas i have ect all 6 gauges do not register at all.

First the speedometer stopped working or would hang up, then the fuel gauge stopped working and now all the gauges have stopped working. *tr

Since about a year ago, november 2013, this vehicle has shown multiple issues. to start, it is an automatic 05 mustang which, the more i read online, the more that i seem to find that many have these exact same or very similar issues. initially the dash cluster (everything besides the tachometer) was not functioning properly. the speedometer would get stuck at 20 mph but still move acting as though the 20 mph was the 0 mph mark (so 35 mph = 15 mph). more recently the gas gauge has stopped working, it sits at empty even after plenty of gas has been put into it. the temperature gauge also gets stuck often, still moving as the speedometer does. not too long after these issues started occurring, when i went to fill up the gas tank it wouldn't take the gas as it normally would. sometimes only a couple dollars worth would be in before it clicked off. after paying closer attention i have also noticed sometimes gas actually splashes out when filling it up even though it is definitely not full. much more recently the vehicle has worrying issues. at one point while driving on the freeway at 70 mph the vehicle suddenly started to decelerate on its own, even while i was pressing on the gas pedal. i pulled it off to the side, shut it off completely, started it up and it was as though nothing happened. ever since that incident though it has been running a bit louder and now it seems a possible misfire is happening with one of the cylinders occasionally. the vehicle has a delayed and very hard shift from third to fourth gear. it is not as though the vehicle has not been taken care of, and for a 2005 the mileage is pretty low still. at least one or two of these issues seem to be a safety concern, and it is very obvious after researching online that these issues are prevalent in tons of these exact same vehicles. *tr

After the leaving the car turned off for approximately 1.5 hours my two teenage daughters, age 17 and 15, got in the car to drive home and noticed that the car smelled a little smoky. they drove down the road for about 5 minutes when the electrical panel went dead, then the power locks began to go up and down continuously and the smell of smoke became more prominent. at this point, they became very concerned that they were going to be locked in the car with smoke pouring out and not be able to get out of the car. so they pulled into a parking lot, immediately exited the car and called 911. as soon as they got out of the car, smoke began billowing out of both doors which were left open. 5 minutes after exiting the car, flames which reached two feet high, began coming out from under the glove compartment. a passerby obtained a fire extinguisher and tried to put out the flames, then the fire department arrived and proceeded to put out the fire completely. the fire department indicated that it was an electrical fire but were not able to determine the source. they indicated that they thought the vehicle was totaled, which was in fact the case. clearly, this was a very upsetting situation for our entire family. we feel blessed that the girls were able to get out in time, but also upset at the thought of what could have happened had they not acted immediately or were not in a position to do so. *tr

2005 roush mustang gt sport. manual transmission. only 24,000 miles. collector condition. instrument cluster issue. tachometer stopped working. fuel gauge intermittent. temperature gauge intermittent. speedometer still working. *tr

While traveling, the speedometer indicated speed changed from 60 mph to 125 mph. it now reads 65 mph when stopped, even while off, and seems to always indicate actual speed plus 65. there is no way to determine actual speed. *tr

Returning home from work, the engine stopped operating. i pulled onto the median and managed to bring my vehicle to a stop. the check engine light as well as other icons were lit up on the information panel which indicated there was still electrical power. after a couple of attempts the vehicle started and i proceeded on my way. traffic was heavy by this time. within the next mile or so the vehicle stalled an additional 4-5 times particularly when stopped at intersections. i managed to restart the vehicle and proceeded directly to the auto dealership since it was on my way. *tr

My fuel gauge, car temperature, and speedometer, all of a sudden started reading all over the place. the fuel gauge goes way past the full mark. the temperature gauge goes way past the hot mark. the speedometer always reads 110 mph. *tr

Water got to fuse box made headlights go off and flooded passenger side of car. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford mustang. the contact stated while driving 50 mph, the speedometer stop working without any warnings. the contact mentioned that the speedometer was reading 0 mph when the driver was traveling approximately 25 mph. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 26,865.

Dash board gauge stepper motors are faulty resulting in no speed registered...no coolant temp registered..improper/no fuel level reading...incorrect/no r.p.m. readings... upon start up, the gauges go ,for lack of better word, crazy..or don't operate at all lots of ford mustang owners are experiencing this issue>>>> dangerous to not know the speed rpm fuel level and coolant temp.... could result in accident, vehicle damage...or worse!! ford needs to be advised to recall and fix this issue.... *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford mustang. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the temperature gauge became inoperable with no symptoms of the engine over heating. a certified mechanic replaced the thermostat and temperature gauge. the failure persisted after the repair was performed. in addition, an independent mechanic diagnosed the vehicle where a trouble code was not detected. recently the fuel gauge failed to operate. the vehicle had not been repaired for either one of the defects. the manufacturer was notified and they informed that there was not a recall related to the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

The instrument cluster on my 2005 mustang is failing. the rpm (tach) does not work at all. my temperature gauge does not work at all. my speedometer is starting to fail. i have researched and found this is a common problem w/ the 2005 mustangs, yet there is no recall. if my car overheats, i will never know it. when my speedometer finally fails, i will not know how fast i am going. *tr

Drove not knowing how fast i was going except my gps thank god, airbag said malfuntion popped me in the face, lights were dim couldn't see and drove into a pole. third huge issue and ford won'r fix b/c warranty i could have killed or been killed. *tr

Recently purchased 2005 ford mustang and was told upon sale that there was a problem with the fuel gauge. i figured it would be easy enough to fix so wasn't really concerned. now a week later i noticed the speedometer doesn't work as well. it sticks on 15 mph for periods of time or then will show at least 15 - 30 mph faster than i am actually going. i searched online for a fix and found thousands of threads of individuals with the exact same issue and even copies of letters sent to owner stating that there wasn't a recall because it's not a safety concern. i bought this car for my daughter. running out of gas late at night because her fuel gauge is broken is a safety issue. sure can she write down mileage every time she gets gas, yes. but after reading so many comments by so many people it seems as if this issue should be resolved by ford. seems to be isolated on the 2005 only. in addition not know your speed limit is also a safety concern and also a financial concern should you get pulled over having no idea how fast you are driving. its seems as if the entire cluster of gauges are faulty and need to be addressed. your response or help in getting ford to rectify is greatly appreciated. *tr

The speedometer sticks at approx 60,40,35 mph. it will use that as zero so if it sticks at 60. and you are going 60 it will read 120. ford says that i should replace the instrument panel. there are numerous other 2005 mustang v6 owners who have the same problem. *tr

My speedometer was reading a lower speed than i was actually driving. it was confirmed with a speed radar sign. my speedometer gauge was off by 15 mph. i checked online and noticed there were many other owners with the same defect. i contacted ford regarding the issue and they told me there wasn't any recall for my car. i did some more research and found out the steppers in the cluster gauge have been known to go bad. *js

After a light rain i noticed water dripping into the passenger side kick plate/glove box area. car would not start. had it towed to dealer. started next day and could not replicate problem. next day, same problem. water noticeable in passenger compartment. shook smart junction box and notice water leaking out. car started and stopped when sjb shaken. took to dealer. replaced sjb for $750. month later same issue, this time car shut off while driving on freeway in rain. loss of all control, electrical and power. could not restart. pounded on sjb and eventually started. got it back home. now brakes lights, turn signal, headlights, a/c and display panel not operating. i am surprised that someone has not been killed yet. in trying to solve this issue, it appears that the internet is fully of the same stories. sickening. *tr

My engine overheated when it cooled down i checked the cooling fan connectors and discovered they have melted now the fan won't operate. *tr

Automatic transmission has trouble shifting into low gear. doesn't want to accelerate after stopping. sounds as if it is stuck in a gear. have read many complaints about this online and ford just claims it isn't their problem. also, all gauges quit working at approx 70,000 miles. fuel system is terrible. will not pump gas past half a tank and spits gas back out while pumping like its full. causes pump to constantly shut off. all of these are incredibly dangerous and makes this car unsafe to drive. *tr

The speedometer gauge is stuck around 100 mph when the car is not moving. the gauge then moves from that point once the car is in motion. *tr

The instrument gauges on my 2005 mustang gt started to fail. first the speedometer and then the fuel and temperature gauges. only the tachometer remains functional. this is a serious safety hazard as there is no way to accurately measure how fast your going. this can be a big issue on rain soaked, icy or otherwise hazardous highways where knowing your speed is crucial to safe operation of your vehicle. ford is obviously not standing behind their product and will not fix the problem without a recall, unless i pay up 1,000 dollars...then wait for the same thing to occur again. nhtsa has the power to issue the recall if safety is an issue. how can it not be? how many have to be maimed or injured before you issue the recall and demand that ford fix this problem? *tr

My car shows erratic needle movement and gauges are reading over heat 0 miles per hour while moving and sticks at 120 mph after use and is parked. gas meter is off, odometer is off, it's very scary to drive and expensive. already dealt with the water leak issue form passenger side. cluster panel is broken i believe. bad dash board. hundreds of forums explain same issues on going years on new models. not safe or fair for ford to not address this death trap. *tr

The gauge clusters failed. the speedometer failed and is no longer working. rpm and fuel gauge are starting to fail. from what i have read on-line. the 2005 mustang gauge motors were poorly designed and ford fixed the problem in the 2006 models but failed to fix the defective parts in the 2005 models. *tr

The vehicles tachometer has failed and no longer properly measures the vehicles rpms. it is probably caused by a failed motor in the gauge cluster. *tr

Dash cluster stops working no fuel, temp, no speed. sometimes everything stops working. if i restart car it seems to reset its self. when trying to fill up gas tank it won't allow fuel to go in shuts pump off splashes out, found that if i hold fuel nozzle upside down i can get some gas in but takes about 10-15 mins to fill tank. these problems occur every week. i have not received notice yet of recall for airbag. ford should recall gas tank problem and dash clusters seems like 2005 years have issues!

Left side of dash cluster ( tach and fuel gauge ) both stopped working. must replace entire cluster to fix . *tr

I have a 2005 ford mustang and the instrument panel stopped working properly. according to the gauge, i was going 120 mph!! then the lights, radio, and doors stopped working. i notice there are a lot of this make and model with the same problem. it's very irritating to have to borrow a car to get to work and back. i've always driven mustangs and never had a problem before, so this took me by surprise. maybe i should look at a honda or chevy. *tr

Speedometer not working correctly. go anywhere from 20 to 80 mph over traveled speed. even when sitting it sticks at 20-80 mph. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford mustang. the contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, she noticed that all of the gauges on the instrument panel were not operating. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the cluster would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 80,000.

Fuel gauge, speedometer and digital read out. comments: hello, i am having significant problems with the speedometer on my 2005 ford mustang v6. this is by no means an isolated problem. speedometer jumps to anywhere between 20 to 80 mph and remains at 20 to 80. i have seen it on every forum that i could find and in large numbers. i have noticed is it seems to be more prevalent when it is below 40f degrees outside. the same thing happened with the fuel gauge so i filled the tank, but the gas gauge still shows 1/4 tank. this is a safety issue and there needs to be resolve before someone gets hurt, if not already. i checked ford site, there are no recalls on this i'm surprised they haven't had a recall yet. *tr

My speedometer does not work so i do not know how fast i am going. this is a problem with many 2005 ford mustangs. there should be a recall on the instrument cluster to fix this problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford mustang. the contact stated while driving 40 mph the speedometer began to show 20 mph. the car was parked and later the it worked as designed. the contact mentioned that the fuel gauge began to register empty although the vehicle had just been refueled. in addition, the left turn signal began to blink at an unusually high rate of speed. the contact believed that the instrument cluster might be defective. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis but offered no assistance. the failure and current mileage was 76,000. the vin was not available.
