Problems with 2016 Ford Fusion ENGINE

On average, the 2016 Ford Fusion starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 40 826 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2016 Ford Fusion

Engine has a design flaw that allows coolant to leak into the cylinders and cause damage requiring a complete long block replacement. this happens when the engine overheats. this has been diagnosed by the local ford dealer, they no it is in an issue and corrected the problem in the 2017-present versions of the fusion

Engine has a design flaw that allows coolant to leak into the cylinders and cause damage requiring a complete long block replacement. this happens when the engine overheats. shop and extended warranty company say they see this often. ford has since released an updated design without the flaw, however has done nothing for those owners that have the flaw.

This is the 4th time this issue has occurred. while driving, my ac kicks on with no warning and i loose all power to my car. it shuts down. this is extremely dangerous and i see several people complain about it and nothing has been done at this time. no resolution can be found for the problem. my car shuts off on its own and the only warning i get is knowing when my radio cuts out and my ac kicks on, get to the breakdown lane because my car is shutting down.75 mph on the busy highway.

I drive a 2016 ford fusion se awd with the 2.0l ecoboost/gtdi motor. i was at a gas station refueling my vehicle, with the 87 octane fuel the oem calls for on the vehicle. i was about 1/4 tank before refueling and i filled my tank until full. upon starting my car, i always turn the key right before ignition and wait for the fuel pumps to draw gas to the motor, then start it. started seemingly fine, however, while i was resetting my mileage trip counters, i noticed, and felt my rpm's drop down into the 300-400 area and my motor shook my car. i kind of was surprised as my car had never done this, so i figured maybe it was just an engine stutter. but then upon waiting a few more seconds, it did it again, 4 more times and felt like my motor was ready to stall out. i was still parked/stationary beside a gas pump so i put the car in drive to go park myself in an actual spot so i wasn't in the way of other vehicles. i kept my car running in park to see if the rpm's would drop again, but upon waiting five minutes, it did not. the rpm's were a bit wobbly though on the tachometer but did not significantly drop. no lights on the dash came on. i wasn't taking any chances, i immediately called the dealership to have my car serviced. turns out, my canister purge valve was stuck in the open position. sounds all too familiar, accounting that ford issued a recall for the exact same issue with many ford focus models, with the exact same motor. this is a serious issue that can result in crash/injury or even death. no light came on for me and i only caught it because i was superstitious enough to bring it in regardless. this should be investigated, it is literally the same issue and i'm baffled as to how his hasn't been made into a recall by now. i know i'm not the only one who has faced this issue, so please, i ask for this to be investigated and deemed a recall as it's a big issue.

The car was brought into dealer for overheating 3 times and twice for coils and spark plugs repair. upon buying the vehicle complained of care not staying in gear. the problem they claimed was fixed, but several months again issue cam again. at that time it was repaired under recall. the car has had several warranty repairs. one of the fans went out on the car. reported at 11 mph car was heated at 289 degrees. car was in park when it proceeded to still move forward in the parking lot. emergency breaks had to be applied and the care went into safety mode and was not driveable. this has occurred twice within two years.

I have a 2012 ford focus and as you know a 2016 fusion as well . shortly after i purchased my focus i received a recall for the purge valve a couple weeks ago my check engin light came on and now it's doing the same dying at stop lights and even on more then one occasion either dying while driving or one last night doing 75 mph on freeway in the fast lane with no shoulder and heavy traffic i called ford coprportat and they said there were no realls for this vehicle, i just passed 60,000 miles and not my warranty is up.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford fusion. while driving approximately 25 mph, the contact heard a strange grinding sound coming from the rear driver's side of the vehicle. also, an abnormal burning odor entered the cabin. the vehicle stalled and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to imperial ford (8 uxbridge rd, mendon, ma 01756, 508-473-2800) where it was diagnosed that the solenoid and purge control failed. the vehicle was currently being repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 74,000.

2016 ford fusion making loud rattling noise from engine. no check engine light ever came on, but ford saying engine is catastrophic engine failure. connecting rod in piston broke loose. how does no check engine light ever come on? this could have killed me on the highway. how does a 3 year old car with 128,000 (mostly highway) miles go into catastrophic engine failure? car has been meticulously maintained.

My car will shut down and lose all power without notice when i'm at highway speeds. a comment comes on the dash that says something like " transmission is not in gear" or something like that. i'm not sure of the exact words because whenever it does it i'm looking to get to the far right lane so i can come to a complete stop on the side of the highway to come to a stop, put the car in park, turn it off then turn it back on. it's so dangerous to have the car lose all power going 70 mph. i really think something needs to be done on this before someone gets killed. this has happened probably 5 different times in the past few months. i don't have the exact dates when it's happened but the last time it did i was traveling in kansas city and thought i was going to cause a large accident trying to get my car over to the shoulder without power.

When attempting to start car, it clicks but will not start. i had road side assistance boot battery and got the car to start, i took the car to auto zone to test battery they said battery is good. when i attempt to turn off the car and put the car in park i can remove the keys from ignition and open the door but the car never actually powers completely off, the dash board lights are still on and my car charger is still working . after several attempts of starting my car and shifting to park it finally does power all the way off.

I have the same issue as previous people. my car check engine light came july 5, 2019 with the code p0302 cylinder 2 misfile. i took the car to the dealership july 8th 2019 after 2 weeks of being unable to figure out what was wrong they call and tell me i need to pay $3,340 to replace the head gasket because it was blown. i towed my car to an independent mechanic that would fix the head gasket for half the price. once it ws there the mechanic said the head gasket was fine after $1,500 of parts being replaced my car still wouldn't run. i contacted ford corporate for assistance on getting the problem fixed. my car was taken back to bob tomes ford the original dealer that said the head gasket was blown. they still insisted it was the head gasket and continued to argue. once corporate contacted them and paid for the tear down of the vehicle i was told i needed a whole new engine because coolant leaking into the cylinder. after speaking with other dealerships i was informed that my engine in my fusion has a design defect causing coolant to leak into the cylinder ford is aware of the design defect and corrected the design in late 2017. however they refuse to acknowledge that they are responsible for the damages on my car. my car is not under warranty any longer so the cost of the repair would have been over $9,000 out of pocket. ford has agreed to help assist with the cost since i have done my research and proven the problem is a design flaw by ford. i was told 3 weeks ago that the engines are on back order and would take 5 weeks to come in. i received a call yesterday that informed me i am now looking at december 29th before i can even get the engine in and that's not even a set date could be longer.. ford needs to recall this issue and stop screwing their customers over since it's a design flaw that caused the problem. its been almost 6 months i still dont have my car

While attempting to pull off after starting my car (vehicle stationary). the gear shift would read park on the dash and the gear shift would not change regardless of me moving it. after calling my mechanic the inspection showed the bushing came off. i received a letter from ford a few days before about the potential warning of the bushing possibly deteriorating. i have spoken with multiple ford reps and have been unable to get an appointment after being told that with my car being effected now, my process of being seen would be expedited. i was also told about having received compensation for a rental or loaner car while my car is unable to drive. i think ford is giving me the run around until they can find a solution but that does not change the fact that i have been effected today. richmond ford lincoln refused to service me and take my case number while belittling corporate the entire way. i also received the incorrect name from one employee. this recall process has been excruciating and as a ford consumer this being my second ford. i am debating if the company even values me, i definitely can't tell after continually asking for an update. the last representative i spoke with said it isn't his department and someone would reach out to me. he said that the day before. i don't know what my next steps are but ford is not assisting during this recall situation.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford fusion. the contact stated that the vehicle had an abnormal smoke odor. when the contact attempted to start the engine, it revved. last week, when the vehicle was started, an abnormal popping noise was heard coming from the engine and a smoke odor was present. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and diagnosed, but no failure was found. the contact stated that the failure recurred yesterday. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer and dealer were not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 800.

I was driving down the highway and my engine lost power. my car would not accelerate. i could not even go the speed limit. the dealer had to replace the throttle body. ford was changing these out through their own recall but that ended years ago. this problem is very popular over the ford models and could wind up killing somebody when the engine cuts out. ford is not standing behind the safety of their customers and i feel the nhtsa needs to step in and make this a mandatory recall. someone is going to die from this and it is all across all their makes.

When i got home from picking my friend's daughter up from school yesterday, i pulled into the garage and tried to place my vehicle in park. as my shifter went past reverse it turned on the back up camera on and stayed in reverse even though my shifter was in park. i didn't know what to do, i couldn't let off the brake because it continued to back up when i did, so i put the emergency brake on and turned the car off. this could have ended a lot worse. if it would have happened while i was picking my friend's daughter up from school, there were kids everywhere and i might not have been able to stop my vehicle. my car is a 2016 ford fusion titanium, ford issued a recall numbered 18s20 for shifter cable bushings going bad in ford fusions between 2013 and 2016. i called ford but apparently my cars vin doesn't qualify for the recall even though the exact issue that they issued the recall for, happened to my car and my car is between those years listed. the shifter cable came off and didn't allow my car to go into park. the car was stationary when this occurred.

Coolant leaks into engine intermittently while driving the car shook and vibrated. speedee mechanic found the issue and told me take it to ford as it is the same issue as ford recalls on fusion, and could cause a fire. took it ford, first they said no coolant leak. a week later i took it back then they said yes coolant is leaking into engine and i have to pay for a new engine.

Tl* the contact owned a 2016 ford fusion. the contact stated that the engine fractured while driving and the engine warning indicator illuminated. the contact noticed white smoke coming from the front end and coasted the vehicle to the side of the road. the contact exited the vehicle, which then caught fire and exploded. the fire department extinguished the fire. a police report was filed. the vehicle was destroyed and towed to a tow lot. the dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. the cause of the failure was not determined. the failure mileage was approximately 72,000. the vin was not available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford fusion. after leaving the office and walking to the vehicle, the contact heard music playing in the vehicle even though the keys were on her person and the vehicle was still locked. additionally, on occasion, the air conditioner, lighting, and radio would activate independently with the ignition in the off position and the doors locked. the vehicle was taken to koons ford of baltimore (located at 6970 security blvd, windsor mill, md 21244, (410) 298-3800) where it was diagnosed that the battery needed to be replaced due to severe battery drainage. also, the water pump needed to be replaced. the battery and water pump were replaced, and the power train control module was updated; however, the failures recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 69,084. the vin was not available.

Coolant leaks into engine, am told i need a new engine. car will begin to vibrate intermittently. first speedee mechanic told ne the issue. took it to ford, they claimed it was sparkplugs and caliper. next day car vibrated, took it back to ford they and they said yes its leaking coolant into engine.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford fusion. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 30 mph, white smoke emitted from the exhaust tip. the vehicle was turned off. the vehicle was towed to simmons rockwell ford 7329 old hammondsport rd, bath, ny 14810, (607) 776-8100, to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that there was coolant in cylinder number one, three and four. the contact was informed that the cylinder head was blown. the contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and notified of the failure, case number: cas-21838155y6r8w1. the approximate failure mileage was 74,000.

Takata recall, loud humming/ vibration noise appears to be coming from underneath rear of vehicle. first started while driving on the street, pulled over to check and it was when the engine would not turn back on, engine light turned on, after this the key fob push to start has not been working and every time you pump gas the engine has problems turning on, only turns on after pressing the gas.

While in motion (65 mph) the vehicles electronic throttle body failed, causing the vehicle to enter an emergency mode in which the rpms were fixed at approximately 1.2k. the ability to accelerate was lost completely and the vehicle had to be coasted off of the highway. an immediate restart of the engine did not remedy the issue, but after leaving the vehicle off for approximately 5 minutes on the side of the highway the issue was resolved, allowing for full use of the vehicle. after the incident the check engine light remained illuminated and the vehicle was brought to the ford dealership for service. it was discovered that the throttle body had "failed" and needed to be replaced. i know that ford has had an issue on older year throttle bodies and that a recall was issued for those. i am hoping that these newer vehicles will be looked at, and if the issue is still prevalent the recall changed to include them.

While driving to work my engine light came on and then the loud vibration/horn type sound ensued. it sounds like it's coming from the gas tank.

Put the vehicle in park and it proceeded to continue to drive. had to use the emergency break to stop car from moving. after that the car would not start and it was towed to dealer. it should be noted my car was at the dealer for months for the same car and they stated the problem was fixed.

In may of 2017 my transmission was causing my car to jerk forward severely when ever i tried to put on the gas. a ford dealership replaced/fixed my transmission which was under warrantee at the time. now, less then 2 years later and 22,000 miles later the exact same thing is happening again. i brought it to a machinic who said to fix it, they would have to basically do the exact same thing the ford dealership did to fix it because the transmission is shot! now i am just out of warrantee i have to foot the bill. it was bad enough needing a new transmission just a year after getting the car, but then needing another new transmission less then 2 years later is not right? ford had been no help!

2016 ford fusion es stalls out during driving does not matter if vehicle is stationary or in motion stalls have occurred in parking lots highways and roads this problem occurs at random times you must stop vehicle put in park and restart

Ford fusion recall: driving on the way home from the store and my check engine light came on along with a wrench symbol and a note on my dash to see manual while i was making a right turn i to my apartment complex. i took it to auto zone and they started it was the throttle body and it needed to be replaced, i took it to ford after where they said it was covered and to bring it in on the 6th of feb to have it fix. but then was told after they confirmed it was the throttle body that it was not covered. i only had the car 2 years and its problem after problem which nothing is covered under the warranty that i'm paying for.

While on a hill i came to a stop and put my car into the park position. my car strated to roll down hill after i put the car in park. i could not remove the key or move the shift out of park. i had to engage the emergency break to stop the car from rolling. i had to call for a tow and the after my mechanic looked for the problem he found that the shift linkage bushing was missing and the cable had disengaged. after calling the ford motor company they said there is a recall for this problem (recall # 18s20) but my car is not on the list for repair. the recall is for 2013-2016 ford fusion se which my car is in this group.

I was driving on the highway, suddenly the check engine light was on along with sudden lose of engine power. the car enter some kind of safe mode that can only drive under 25 mph. steering wheel was very heavy. it returned to normal after several restart. check engine light still on. went to the dealer the next day. they told me it is caused by a faulty sensor of the throttle body.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford fusion. while driving various speeds, the vehicle suddenly stalled. the vehicle was taken to mall of georgia ford (4525 nelson brogdon blvd hwy 20, buford, ga) to be diagnosed, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 42,500. *bf. consumer stated vehcile would sometmes stall going 20mph this has occured at least 12 times from jan- mar. it occurs when consumer gets in the vehicle and begins to pull out. it is getting harder to crank and slower delay. consumer took it to the dealer an but was not given documentation for service performed on 4/4/19. consumer has contacted the manufacturer.*jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford fusion. while the contact was exiting a parking lot, the vehicle suddenly slowed down and shut off. the vehicle was able to be restarted and was driven home. the contact planned on taking the vehicle to matthews ford (175 e main st, norwich, ny 13815, (607) 334-3273) on october 27, 2018 for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer offered to tow the vehicle to the dealer, but did not offer to pay for a rental. the failure mileage was 32,390.

When i put gas in the car, it is very hard to start. i have to pump the gas and then rev the engine to get it to stay on. if i leave it in park, without reving the engine, it will stall out. once i get it into drive and start moving, the problem subsides. the only other time i notice it, is if i am idling on a hill. at that point, it will stall without constant feathering of the gas pedal. this seems to be consistent with the current recall on some of the 2016 ford fusions, but my vin doesnt appear on the recall.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford fusion. the contact stated that the vehicle had stalled several times with no warning. in addition, the vehicle had been extremely difficult to start after refueling. there was an engine warning light that had flashed intermittently as the failure progressed. the vehicle was not inspected and diagnosed by a dealer yet but hennessy ford lincoln atlanta (5675 peachtree industrial blvd, atlanta, ga 30341, 1-(770) 621-0200) was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not included in an unknown electrical system recall campaign from the manufacturer however, the vehicle exhibited the same failure as the recall. the manufacturer had issued 25 tsb on electrical and 16 tsb on the engine and engine cooling however, there was no recall open for the vehicle. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no assistance other than the contact having the dealer diagnose and repair the vehicle. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was not available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford fusion. while making a left turn down a hill, the steering failed and a loud abnormal noise was heard. also, when braking, the vehicle would slowly decelerate and remain at 0.8 rpm. furthermore, the abs and traction control warning indicators illuminated. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 75,104.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford fusion. the contact stated that while driving 15 mph, the vehicle stalled with the engine light illuminated. the contact also stated that an abnormal noise was detected coming from the front driver side of the vehicle. the contact also stated that after refueling the vehicle, the vehicle hesitated to start. the vehicle was taken to gene messer ford lubbock (6000 19th south, lubbock, tx 79407, (806) 793-2727) where the contact was informed that the purge valve needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 47,000.

On monday october 1,2018 at 8 am i drove my kids to school, went to the grocery store, and gas station. my car drove fine. by 11:00 am i'm leaving home heading to work and while in my neighborhood driving 25 mph my car lost acceleration, began to jerk, shake really bad, and shut off. i turned it back on. it shook again and shut off. i managed to turn the car back on and slow roll into a parking space. i waited 5 mins started the car and slowly drove it back home. when pulling into my space. the car lost acceleration and the brake pedal would not press down. i could not brake!!!! the car shut off. while having it inspected, i started it and now white smoke comes out of the tailpipe. i drive the turnpike at 80 mph to get to work. this is a serious safety issue. the car wouldn't accelerate and i couldn't brake. i could have lost my life. what if i had my kids with me and we got in a bad accident because of this??? this is a serious issue. i just bought this car on april 7, 2018. i've only had it 6 months and had the maintenance done on it in june. i just now need an oil change. i only have 66,611 miles on it. i bought the car at 49,000 miles.

Vehicle was in motion, 12 mph. husband made a left turn from almost a stopping position. he proceeded about one foot and the engine stopped after it sputtered extremely and made a loud noise. there was absolutely no response when he hit the gas pedal. the car would not move. it was extremely dangerous as it happened in the middle of traffic. the check engine light illuminated with a wrench and message to check the manual. i took the car to jerry's ford alexandria and they said the throttle body had to be replaced and the computer reprogrammed. cost was $610. they discounted the price to $510 and threw in a free oil change and detailing which was awesome. i have read online that this has happened to other 2016 ford fusions and wondered why ford has not issued a recall for this dangerous issue or at least inform owners to beware. . car has about 46,800 miles on it as i bought it june 2015.

After pumping gas my vehicle would not start. after waiting and trying for 10 minutes the vehicle started. about two weeks later while driving a loud noise was coming from the left side of my vehicle after pulling over i realized it was coming from my gas tank took it back to the dealership they said that they have never heard that before but they knew how to stop the noise. while driving and at a stop light my vehicle just shut off with no vehicles behind me, ii put it in neutral and it went in reverse and i was able to pull my vehicle closer to the curb. couple days later my check engine light came on and the code was for a canister purge valve. i see ford had a recall in 2015 for the same problem with the previous models. this is a safety concern and i am very disappointed because i just purchased my vehicle on march 31, 2016 and the dealership i purchased it from was not helpful and ford did nothing.

18s20 the transmission shifter cable detached which caused my car. it to shift into gear. it is not drivable and the parts aren't available for over 3 weeks. it leaves me car less, and ford told me they would t provide a loaner vehicle.

Engine loses engine power when driving. pressing the accelerator pedal does nothing. must coast or brake until the car stops. power steering, braking, and climate control systems remain functional; radio remains on; turn signals did not work. 'trans not in park' message appears on the display. event has occurred three times when driving at highway speeds. cruise control was on and set during at least two times out of the three events. car may be restarted after coming to a stop, shifting into park and turning key to off. appears to 'reset' to work correctly until the next unexpected event occurs. check engine light does not come on. chime occurs after the loss of engine power. the car does not shake during or before event. have not experienced any harsh or delayed shifting when starting from stop or after slowing and trying to accelerate. three identical instances have occurred since driving this car. in one of the three instances, the key was bumped with a knee. present milage is about 48000. car was obtained in 12/2016. local ford dealer states that there are no recalls or services outstanding for this vehicle; did not know of any reported problems like this. on may 15, 2018 wes myers at bob sight ford in lee's summit, missouri checked two other fusions and noted that this same problem will occur if the key is barely rotated back - not so much as to think it should turn off the engine. as such, he did not find anything 'wrong' since other vehicles exhibit the same problem; replacing the ignition switch with another that has the same problem would not provide a fix. also stated that unless the car was still under the bumper to bumper warranty, that ford would not take any action. the vehicle leasing company (enterprise) has not issued any notices stating this is a known issue with the vehicle. nhtsa 9/19/2016, blacklick, oh, is similar issue.

Shaking no power won't accelerate and jerking when backing up

While driving at a steady 45 mph on a city street my ford fusion lost engine power. the tachometer dropped to less than 500rpm, the check engine warning light and the have dealer service vehicle light came on. pumping the gas pedal did not have any effect on rpms. i was able to coast to a safe area. i turned off the engine and when i restarted the engine it was still idling under 500rpm and the gas pedal had no effect on engine speed. after the 3rd restart, i could get enough engine speed to return to my hotel but it ran very rough with the check engine light on. i took the car to a carmax dealer in henderson, nv. i purchased it from a different dealer in roseville, ca. they sent it to a ford dealer in henderson. the dealer replace the throttle body - attaching the repair invoice. i have noticed that this seems to be a common complaint online and that ford somehow stopped north carolina from forcing them to issue a recall for this. if this had happened on the freeway in heavy traffic, there would have been one heck of an accident as the car rapidly slowed down without warning.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford fusion. while driving 35 mph, the engine warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle stalled. the contact also heard an abnormal noise coming from the fuel tank. the contact stated that she had to restart the vehicle approximately four times in order for the vehicle to work properly. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer (eufaula ford, 590 selmon rd, eufaula, ok 74432, (918)-689-7767) for diagnostic testing, but no results were found. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 76,394.

About 2 months after i purchased my 2016 ford fusion, the check engine light came on. but a couple days later, it went away. now after the car sits over night and i awake in the morning to go to work, the car cuts off in the middle of traffic. it just goes completely dead. its a good thing i havent been on the highway when that happens. the loses all power and acceleration. i then have to turn the switch off and wait a few minutes before i can then accelerate again. it has happened every morning for the past month.

Car slows down, jerk, shake & light comes on with a picture of a wrench while you are driving on the freeway or on the road fearful of causing an accident. this has happened several times in one day. the car has been parked in the driveway & now the recalls have been looked to discover a total of 3 recalls on the ford fusion.the ford service department indicates from your description this sounds like a throttle body issue which is a known problem.
