We have classified the 207 complaints from 2013 Ford Fusion about STEERING into the following categories.
My 2013 ford fusion titaniumtransmission went out at 80k. i was informed by the dealer that, "upon teardown found transmission case cracked and metal in transmission." here is the letter describing the situation that i sent to the ford dealer after many calls with ford manufacture: i would really appreciate your assistance in dealing with my transmission repair, steering temporary locking, and check engine light issues with my 2013 ford fusion. on december 24, 2017, i started my car after taking my oldest son to get his haircut, when my ford fusion started to jerk, lose power, and steering locked when we attempted to drive away from the parking lot. i was really disappointed that my car, at such a young age, started to act up, but somewhat grateful it happened prior to leaving town on december 26th. my car has been at the dealership since december 26th, and i was finally informed of the hefty cost of the repairs this week (25 days later), for a new transmission. as you may understand, this is very discouraging because i only need nine more payments to pay off the car and don't understand why the transmission suddenly gives out and the steering temporarily locks before paying off the car. i'm perplexed by the denial from the ford manufacture company to assist in this matter since this is a transmission product issue. please explain, because i have several concerns: is this the typical shelf life of a 2013 ford fusion transmission? if not, then it would appear to be a manufacture defect. if so, then the transmission and product of this make and model is not of good quality. is the damage from a cracked transmission or the gears are defaulting to 5th gear or both? we would really appreciate you looking into this matter and assist with paying the costs of the transmission malfunction. what other solutions or recommendations do you have available?
It has been reported that 2014-2018 ford fusion steering wheel can come loose and in some cases detach while driving. i'd like to report that my 2013 fusion titanium is also experiencing a loose steering wheel that's progressively getting looser. it has not detached during driving. i first noticed it about 4 months ago. i was driving when i first noticed it.
I was on my way to work. i was on hwy 109 going 45 mph. i was about four miles from my work and suddenly my power steering was not working the wheel was very hard to move. i could barely get it to my job. i made it there and turned off my car. i started it back up to see if that would fix the problem the a warning light popped up that said power steering assist fault. i still had no power steering. i called the dealership they came and got my car because there was a recall on the eps bolts. they called me the next day and said that wasnt the problem that i needed my steering rack replaced. i did some research and my car had no symptoms of the steering rack being bad. the wheel didnt shake and it wasn't hard to steer or keep my car in the lane . i can not understand how it could just go out with out warning. it is a very dangerous problem and i believe ford should be accountable. wjy isnt thos a recall. ive read multiple complaints for the same issue. what would have been the solution if i would have wrecked and been injured or if my special needa child was in the car and i wrecked. something needa to be done
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fusion. while driving 65 mph, the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road. the contact noticed that the steering wheel failed to turn left or right. the contact's brother-in-law drove the vehicle to the dealer (deacon jones ford-lincoln, 3301 mclain st, goldsboro, nc 27534) where it was diagnosed that the steering gear assembly, the four bolts and nuts from the steering, and the power steering box needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was contacted at 866-436-7332 and stated that the vin was not included in a recall. the contact would have to pay for the repair. the approximate failure mileage was 46,223.
Power steering assistant light comes on and power steering does not work. there is recalls on other 2013 ford fusions for steering issues but not on mine. this could have caused me a serious accident had i been not just pulling out of my drive way and actually on the freeway

I usually drive local roads (max speed 45). this morning, while driving at 65 mph on interstate 84, i felt vibration in the steering wheel. i thought it was the new tires i had purchased 2 weeks ago. when i got home, i noticed that the steering wheel wobbled on the steering column. i brought my car to the dealer and the tech tightened the bolt that attached the steering wheel to the column. $95.39! this is the second time this has happened to this vehicle. the first time was approx. 2 years ago when one of the service techs tightened the same bolt. (mike fedorsin) he didn't charge me that time and there was no bill (still under bumper to bumper warranty).
I turned my steering wheel all the way to the left while the vehicle was stationary, and i heard a noise from the front end. the power steering stopped working and two warning messages appeared on my dash. my mechanic found that the steering motor bolts had corroded and broken, causing the motor to detach from the steering gear. i learned that there was a recall for this problem. on calling ford i was told that the recall service had been performed on june 8, 2015; however, the bolts still failed less than 30 months later.
Takata inflators i could not see headlight would go off and on and my steering wheel would shake uncontrollably came close to 3 fatal accidents every time things went wrong i was driving on the freeway me and my kids came so close to loosing our lives
Car started rolling forward after engine was started in parking lot, even though gear shift was in "park", emergency brake was engaged, and foot brake was being pressed. steering was unresponsive. after engine was stopped and restarted (without having to press the foot brake as one usually does), car seemed to operate normally. dealer subsequently replaced power steering assembly, but could not duplicate forward rolling event..
I was driving my car into my driveway, going straight, and the service power steering indicator light came on. i turned the car off and back on and the warning light came on again. i backed out my driveway to test it, and it had completely lost all power steering. there were no other issues or warnings leading up to the total and complete failure. took car to dealership, who indicated the entire gear box would have to be replaced for a cost of 1800.00. i was told it was not part of recall, and my checks on nhtsa by vin confirmed.
Steering wheel on my 2013 ford fusion is loose. feels as if the bolts holding the steering wheel are loose and the situation is getting worse.first noticed is in the stationary position but now moves even when driving.
The steering wheel on my 2013 fusion titanium is loose. current recall covers 2014. the steering wheel can rock back and forth and side to side with ease and moves over a half inch.
Electronic power steering fault currently not covered on recall according to the ford dealership will cost $2000 to replace
Power steering all of a sudden went out on me while driving down a major interstate
Steering at times gets hard. then trying to correct, especially in a turn car jerks. just took a long trip, and it was scary at times. contacted this site 6 months ago without any response. ford said that nothing is wrong. they checked and said there was a code for loss of signal to pcm. they had no answer. i know that ford has a major electronic rack problem. this is a law suit waiting to happen. sometimes when just a small unevenness in the road appears, it is hard to get car out, and car rolls from side to side because of pressure needed, because the power steering was not available. car at times is also easier to steer to the left, then to the right. this steering is a major issue. i just talked to a guy with a 2013 c max, and ford made him pay for a replacement, as 37,631. this is not right, and it is very dangerous. Power steering malfunction warning appears quite often during driving and dissapear within few seconds.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fusion. while driving at a low speed, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver and a "power steering assist fault" message appeared on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the mechanic plugged the vehicle to a machine, but the diagnosis was unknown. the contact called winner ford (856-428-4000 located at 250 haddonfield-berlin rd, cherry hill, nj 08034) where the dealer stated that the vehicle was included in an unknown recall, but there was a fee for diagnosing the vehicle. the contact then called ace ford (856-845-6600 located at 487 mantua pike, woodbury, nj 08096) where the dealer stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall for the failure; however there was a recall on the seat belts. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that a recall for the power steering was completed in 2015 and the vehicle was not covered under warranty. the approximate failure mileage was 19,000. ..updated 10/25/17 *bf *js
Steering locked up while driving. warning light indicates steering assist fault.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fusion. while driving approximately 25 mph, the steering wheel seized and the power steering assist fault warning indicator illuminated. the contact stated that the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road, waited a few minutes, and was able to resume driving. the vehicle was taken to auto zone to see about the recall notification. a salesperson stated that there was no power steering ability due to a steering gear motor bolt failure, and suggested that the vehicle be taken to a dealer. the dealer was not contacted. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v250000 (steering). the contact called the manufacturer and was informed that the vehicle was not covered under a warranty and no further assistance was provided. the approximate failure mileage was 118,000.
While driving on the highway (the middle lane on 690 in syracuse at 4:30 pm), a notification came up on my dashboard saying "steering assist fault, service required." i then lost all power steering while i was in the middle of the highway during rush hour. aaa came and it was brought to a local car care center where my family always goes to get our vehicles fixed. they drove my car and said it was driving fine and that no codes were showing up. once i drove it home from the mechanic, the same notification popped up on the dashboard again as i was pulling into my driveway (steering assist fault, service required). i then brought it to the dealership where i bought the car (i had to drive it with no power steering). they stated that i needed a completely new steering gear. while doing some research before my vehicle was repaired, i found several articles stating that the steering gear needed to replaced on other 2013 ford fusions (i believe my car was manufactured in the same place as the other ford's that had their steering gears recalled based on the vin number of my car). the dealership and ford corporate stated that there was nothing they could do about it (pertaining to reimbursement) because my car's vin number was not on the recall list for that particular item (the steering gear). i ended up paying just under $1,800.00 .
Power steering assist fault message appeared and i could not turn my steering wheel. i had just started the car in my garage and as i tried to back out of the garage i could not turn the steering wheel at all so i pulled back in the garage and called by dad. when he arrived about 20 minutes later he started it and it worked just fine. it looks like a problem with the epas and i am wondering why the 2013 fusions were not included in the recall. if this had happened while i was driving i can't imagine what would have happened.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fusion. while driving 20-30 mph, the power assist warning indicator illuminated and the power steering failed to operate as intended. the vehicle was taken to be diagnosed and the contact was informed that the steering failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 95,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fusion. while driving approximately 60 mph and attempting to switch lanes, the steering wheel became difficult to turn and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the contact took the vehicle to the boeckman ford dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering assembly failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer opened case number: cas12394818faz7w0 and referred the contact to nhtsa. the approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fusion. the contact stated that the steering wheel failed while driving 70 mph. during the failure, the power steering indicator illuminated and the steering wheel became difficult to control. shortly after, the contact was informed that the undercarriage of the vehicle was on fire. the contact was able to coast the vehicle onto the road shoulder. the contact noticed smoke under the hood. the police and fire departments were present and a fire report was filed. the vehicle was towed to an unknown location. the contact received a recall notification for nhtsa campaign number: 17v209000 (engine and engine cooling) in april of 2017. the parts were unavailable for the repair. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000. vin tool confirms parts not available.
Got a warning traveling on highway at 65 mph - steering assist fault, get service soon. cleared the message and was able to continue 10 miles to my destination. parked car, looked under hood for power steering fluid reservoir, it is not there. left car and came back an hour later to leave. got message, steering assist malfunction. stop car safely. steering wheel extremely hard to turn. could not drive car, had it towed to ford dealer 16 miles away. ford dealer replaced the steering gear and is waiting on software update to be released by ford on 3/29/2017
Electric epas power steering failed while driving.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fusion. whether the vehicle was stationary or driving various speeds, the steering wheel would become loose. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the failure mileage was approximately 36,000.
While driving the car on a local road the steering abruptly stopped working, almost causing an accident. the car became very difficult to control and the abs, traction control, traction control off and airbag warning lights illuminated. an epas warning appeared on the service monitor screen. when i pulled over and turn the car off and on again everything operated normally. when i made a left turn into a gas station the same problem occurred almost causing me to drive into a car exiting the gas station because it was so difficult to turn the vehicle. the same warning lights came on. it appears to be a defective part in the electronic power steering. i don't know if this is the same part involved in the previous generation of fusions with the epas that was recalled. please investigate, this is dangerous problem and there are a lot of 2013+ fusions on the road with this same epas system as mine.
I have a 2013 ford fusion 1.6l se that i have had to take back to local dealer to have them retighten the steering wheel bolt. the steering wheel started to become loose and moving side to side and up and down. they said that the bolt was very loose and had to be tightened. so i would say that you need to include the 2013 into the investigation. date is an estimate if need more info i can get.
Ever since i purchased my car (used) it has make a loud popping noise when i turn the steering wheel all the way to the left. i have taken it to many auto service shops (including authorized ford shops) and no one could ever find the issue (sounded like it was coming from the tire). the other day when i got in my car to go to work, the abs and power steering warnings were both blinking on my dash. i tried to turn my wheel to see if the power steering was out and it was not working. i turned my vehicle off and back on and it seemed to reset both the abs and power steering modules. i was able to drive my car to work and then to the dealership to get it checked out. the steering gear is failing, my vehicle is only 2 years old and has less than 80k miles. this is a recall for 2013 ford fusions but my vin # is not included. i have done research and have read other's stories and this can happen while i am driving, i got lucky this time and it showed up first thing when i turned my vehicle on.
2013 ford fusion with 60,000 miles - while driving on the highway at 65 mph a power steering warning light came on that read "steering loss / stop safely". suddenly the power steering went completely dead and it was nearly impossible to move the vehicle or recover the car's steering at all. luckily, i was able to slow the engine down and move just enough to the side of the road where i could glide to a stop. my family and i could have been killed or could have hurt or killed others with this failure. research has shown that thousands of others have had similar issues, and that there is a law suit against ford in california seeking class action status. my calls to ford were essentially ignored and i was pushed back on the dealership, who had no power to authorize any reimbursement for the $2000 expense. it is unfortunate that it will take a major collision where someone is seriously injured or even killed for this to be fixed. hopefully the nhsa and the lawsuit will rectify this with these vehicles.
Wobbly, loose steering wheel under all driving conditions ...updated 11/06/17 *bf updated 9/12/18*jb
Power steering assist fault light came on and remained on until i pressed "ok" button. steering 'seized up', making it impossible to steer, or turn the car.the light had intermittently blinked on, then off, 2 previous times in the past 4-6 weeks, but not staying on long enough to read the warning in entirety. this time the warning stayed on until i manually turned it off. upon researching, i found the recall (#15v250000) for hundreds of thousands of 2013 ford fusions. i also found, too numerous to count, complaints all over the internet of exact same scenario, and these vehicles not being under the recall either. i called ford motor company customer service and got someone in a foreign land, that continued to repeat, your vehicle is not among those in the recall, you must take your car to a ford dealer for inspection of this problem. no matter what concern or question i posed to him, that was the only answer i received. i have made an appointment with a local ford dealer to have the car inspected. i am very disappointed that this will be an out of pocket expense to me.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fusion. while driving 30 mph, the power steering warning indicator illuminated and the power steering failed to operate as intended. the contact stated that it became difficult to maneuver the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 75,000.
My vehicle has been diagnosed with a complete power steering gear failure, just outside bumper to bumper warranty. my car has 33,000 miles. i have done research online and noticed ford has pending lawsuits for this issue and many complaints and decided to hide the issue they knew about and put the customer on the hook for the $1900 repair cost which is ridiculous. this could have had deadly consequences for me as the power steering failure came on while going at freeway speed. luckily it had just enough to get me off the freeway or i would have most likely been involved in a crash as i had no steering. i have owned multiple fords with 190,000 miles and never had issues with the old design. the new electronic system obviously has major design flaws and issues based on many complaints and lawsuits just by searching this online and ford has shrugged of the issue as if it was non existent. now i am worried this is going to occur again and is a major safety concern of mine if i lose control of the vehicle due to a design flaw and flawed overall steering gear. when ford is supposed to be making design improvements, they are backtracking in it as my old ford vehicles have performed better than this new one.
This is a follow-up to a previous complaint i made in 2017. this is in response to the new steering gear recall. i previously paid for this repair in 2017 on a 2 year old car. the nhtsa number is 19v632000. ford is denying that my car is part of the latest recall and cannot tell me why. i believe ford is knowingly excluding cars from the recall that previously paid for the issue because they don't want to reimburse the high dollar amounts. i am on the hook for $1700.00+ repair and 100% believe my car should be in this newest recall. i read all the documents and my car matches the model, year, build dates, and site build location. it also is registered in one of the high corrosion states listed in the recall. no one can tell me why my car is excluded even though it matches 100% to the affected vehicle description in the recall. i know i am being treated unfairly as my car should be included and isn't. no one at ford can tell me why.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fusion. while driving 30 mph, the "hill assist traction", "tire pressure sensor fault", and "service power steering now" indicators illuminated. the power steering seized without warning. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 73,000.
I was driving on i-71 to columbus in typical december weather when an error message appeared stating 'steering loss stop safely'. having read the message and experiencing no immediate change in steering performance, it went away after being displayed for several seconds. after stopping for about an hour in columbus, a 'steering loss stop safely' error message reappeared upon restarting and steering became almost impossible. several subsequent restarts made no difference. a short test drive confirmed that the steering was extremely difficult (even with two hands) at speeds from 0 to 20 mph. the steering effort did not appear to decrease with increased speed. the car was towed to the nearest ford dealer where they 'verified pull codes, clear codes, updated pscm.rd test reset pass' (see attached repair documentation). vehicle has been operating normally in the brief period since then (~100mi). it is fortunate that the severely compromised steering occurred at startup. steering was extremely difficult even for a 225 pound male. a petite female may not have been able to steer at all. had the loss occurred unexpectedly at high speed, it could have easily caused a serious accident. the fact that the dealer updated the software makes me suspicious that they knew there was a problem. if so, i think a recall is warranted before anyone is injured or killed. the result of this software problem is just as serious as a mechanical failure since it results in near total loss of steering control. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fusion. the contact stated that the power steering assist warning lamp illuminated when the vehicle was started. the vehicle was turned off and restarted; however, it failed to remedy the issue. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 75,000.
Power steering system fault came on the dash. pressed the ok button and then noticed balls of fire coming from under the vehicle. i then tried to pull over. i couldn't brake, press the gas, or turn the steering wheel. the car then burst into flames and then the vehicle exploded and burned.
Yesterday i purchased a vehicle through an auto broker from manheim atlanta. no more than 6 hours later the vehicle caught fire while i was driving it and exploded multiple times. 7:30pm i was driving on 285 headed home and i noticed a warning on my dash stating that the power steering assistance has a fault at the same time i noticed balls of fire coming from underneath my car. i tried to get to the shoulder however the engine seized hindering me from doing anything. by the time the car slowed the interior was filled with smoke, i jumped out then the car exploded multiple times. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fusion. while driving 5 mph, the steering wheel seized. it was diagnosed that the electronic gear sensor failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 25,981.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fusion. while driving 40 mph, the electronic power steering assist failed. the contact stated that the advance traction and power assist warning indicators illuminated after the failure occurred. the contact notified the dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 21,000.
2013 ford fusion was purchased certified preowned by an independent dealership called carsense(www.carsense.com) in pennsylvania in march 2015 with 8k miles on it. three year 36k mile warranty expired in february 2016. the car at time of power-steering failure was sitting in a private covered parking garage with 25k miles on it. the car is only used for leisure driving and is well maintained. after this happened i had it towed to a independent car service shop who was honest enough to call a ford dealership whose representative eluded the ford may take the corrective actions on this, after a $150 tow to this dealer shop the ford dealer department denied ever having claimed they would help and refused to help in any way. the ford dealers rational: 1) the car was purchased from an independent dealer 2) warranty was expired 3) they required a $120 examination fee, even though the independent dealer had already done this. when all was said an done the electronic power steering rack and pinion assembly had to be completely replaced totaling $2106.69. this unplanned failure(right after the warranty expires) seems to be very common with ford and i am very disappointed with their quality. please help https://www.consumeraffairs.com/news/ford-vehicles-with-steering-issue-recalled-062915.html http://www.fordproblems.com/trends/electronic-power-steering/ https://consumerist.com/2015/05/27/ford-recalls-nearly-445k-vehicles-for-power-steering-failure-fuel-leak-issues/
I received a message in my dash that the power steering assist had fail. i had no power steering. the car was hard for to control. i was on a private street in my neighborhood when this happened. i was lucky. i check for a recall for this issue and didn't find any. this was a very dangerous situation for me to be in. i feel ford has sold me a death trap.
While operating my vehicle through a puddle of water, power steering would shut down. there was no warning of the power steering failure as it abruptly shut down making it difficult to control vehicle, especially when turning. upon restarting vehicle, power steering would function properly until vehicle passed through another puddle of water. cycled through this issue several times until vehicle would not recover from power steering fault. now ford dealership is requiring that i replace steering rack to remedy the problem. vehicle has been serviced in february of 2016 due to recall regarding steering component.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fusion. while driving approximately 70 mph, the steering assist indicator illuminated and the steering wheel seized. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was determined that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v250000 (steering). the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 13,000.
Driving on rt 17 northern va a warning came up to service stability control. i was able to pull off the interstate and called ford. after turning of the car i lost all power steering. i was towed into a ford dealer the cost of the repair $2140. ford paid $1000.00 of this repair. i have found out that ford had thousands of fusions with this same repair recalled but because of were my fusion was built it is not under recall. i'm glad i was not on interstate 95 when this occurred. ford needs to expand this recall. *tr
Well i noticed problems with my car maybe a month after i got the car took it back to the dealer ship they didnt see any problems but im having transmission problems, problems with the steering, i have had a coolant problem fixed already. the shocks went out on the care within less than a year. having problems with the fueling system. also having problems with the left light system. they have only to recalls with my vin number of things that i had already gotten fixed. so im really concerned about the issues that are going on with my car and feel that it really need to be addressed. every thing that has happend is while the car is in motion.
