Recently reported STEERING problems on 2012 Ford Fusion

At slow rates of speed the steering becomes very difficult to control if i was to run over a little pot hole in the street my car would jerk violently to the left or right

Service power steering now" and " service advancetrac" error's occurred at the same time. vehicle was stationary when this happened

I own a 2012 ford fusion vin:[xxx]. the 2012 fusion has a safety recall 15s18 due to a known issue with the power steering control module shorting out and causing the power steering to fail while the vehicle is in motion. while "manual" steering is still possible, the force needed to exert on the steering wheel is immense, just to be able to change lanes. when the power steering goes out on a turn, it is nearly impossible to control of the vehicle. this is a serious and very dangerous known issue. i have been experiencing this known issue covered under your safety recall 15s18 for over 2 years. i have taken it to the quality auto mall dealership several times to have the system looked at so they could find the problem and fit it under the terms of the safety recall 15s18. each time i took it in for service, the dealership was not able to duplicate the issue as it only happens intermittently, and i have not been able to ?make? the power steering fail on demand. last week, the power steering abruptly failed again. i once again took the vehicle into the quality auto mall dealership . the vehicle now has exceeded the 150,000-mile extended coverage to be included in the safety recall 15s18. miraculously, this time, the service technician was able to duplicate the issue, and verify that there is indeed a problem with the power steering control module. now, though, there is no coverage for the known issue covered by the safety recall 15s18 due to the age and mileage of my vehicle. i called the ford customer service number 800-241-3673 on 06/07/2018 and explained the situation, asking for assistance from ford as this known issue should have been covered under the safety recall 15s18 and should have been replaced 2 years ago. a case was opened for me [xxx], and i was told there would be a decision in 2 business days. final result=will not cover under recall. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Ford fusion safety recall 15s18 power steering assist.i was driving down the highway when an alert appeared on the dash that i needed to service the power steering immediately/service "autotrac" i had my car towed to a local mechanic who told me that the repair needed stemmed from a recall that occurred for my vehicle.i called the dealership i purchased my car from, santa fe ford alachua fl. i was informed by them that there was nothing they could do to help me in the repair but told me to reach out to my local ford dealership as santa fe ford is 80 miles away. i then had my car towed from the mechanic's shop to nick nicholas ford in inverness fl. the service manager at nick nicholas informed me that there was no recall showing for my vehicle and i should reach out to ford customer service hotline and file a claim with them. upon filing my claim with ford directly, they told me that my vehicle had been brought in to satisfy the power steering recall in 2015 in miami, fl and there was no extended warranty on the recall. i proceeded to have nick nicholas conduct the repairs. i paid nick nicholas $138.57 on 3/29/18 to "update the software" for my power steering. i drove my car for months after the software update. on 6/7/18 i was driving my car to work when the alert appeared on my dash saying "service power steering immediately" and it was at this point i lost all power steering. i was able to get my car off of the highway and into my place of work. i contacted the service manager at nick nicholas, brian, who told me this repair should be covered under the recall. i towed my car back to nick nicholas, afterward they informed me my repair would not be covered. ford customer service offered to pay 250$ toward the cost of the repair, the service manager brian would cover approximately 500$ for the repair, leaving me with about $1,100 worth of repairs to pay out of pocket.

Driving car and service power steering now flashes and car becomes hard to steer--couldn't turn.

While turning onto a highway my car began to lurch. i pulled over and had assumed there was an issue with my brakes. as a precaution, i had the car towed back to my home. i then took the car to an auto shop to have the breaks inspected. the technician told me that the breaks were fine but that he had found the following codes: c1963, c1963-eo, and c1278-20. i discovered that there was a recall for steering related issues with 2012 ford fusions. while at a ford dealership i was told my car did not apply to the recall and was quoted $3,800 for the repair. i was told the car was not safe to drive and that the wheel could come off without notice.

Driving at a speed of around 35mph, the power steering and advanctrac warning light came on. driving was okay. parked car, turned it off and then back on, power steering service now light came on and loss of steering occurred. car was towed to north hampton, nh ford... power steering was completely replaced [along with 4 brake pads]. less than 3 weeks later, same indicator warning came on while driving on the highway ~50mph. brought back to raynham, ma ford dealership... they replaced front struts, o2 sensor, reset computers... had the car back less than a full day... same power steering warning/advanctrac warning came on while driving a back road under 30mph... turned car off, turned back on, power steering completely gone again. it was completely replaced less than a month ago. now expenses over $5k for repairs, and the cars steering is gone. waiting for dealership to diagnose this time. searched by vin for recalls the first go round, and nothing came up.... now it lists an epas steering efforts... which through research shows has been out for a while, so why was this not listed for my car before!?

Taking recall. my ford fusion 2012 power steering has not been functioning correctly since may 2018 after i had a flat tire returning home on vietnam road fayette ms. it is saying service power steering now on my dashboard. i was not aware of the recall until i brought my vehicle to the dealership by then end of june 2018 and was informed that i had a recall for the power steering and airbags.

Having issues with the advanctrac failure. this is the second time this has occurred the first was covered under warranty. this time the warranty has expired. took it to the dealership and they quoted me a $1800 quote to fix. this is a issue that everyone with this vehicle is having. i came outside and my time had went flat when i proceed to add air to it and got in the car to leave. i had absolutely no power steering. at all. this is very dangerous.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while attempting to make a left turn, the steering wheel seized. the dealer (don hinds ford inc., 12610 ford dr., fishers, in 46038) stated that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering) and could not repair the vehicle. the manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. the failure mileage was 182,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while driving at an unknown speed, the steering wheel seized and became difficult to steer. the dealer (astorg ford-lincoln of parkersburg, (304) 485-8585) was called and stated that there were no recalls for the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 38,000. *tt

While driving down interstate, vehicles steering assist warning light came on. immediately the car became difficult to steer and turn. controlling the vehicle was extremely difficult.

Driving approximately 25 mph, the "power steering assist fault" and "service advance track" warning messages displayed and the power steering suddenly malfunctioned. the steering wheel became difficult to turn. turning vehicle off and back on has no effect. there is a recall for the issue dated 06/02/2015, number 15v340000 that is not covered for this vehicle vin: [xxx] this issue is identical to the above recall issue information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Our power steering went out in the car without notice while driving on a highway. i know there has been a recall on power steering on other 2012 ford fusion, but when i put in my vin it doesn't come up with this recall. this was very dangerous and we could have crashed.

Car made "popping" noise for a day or two from what seemed to be the front suspension. then the warning light "service accutrack" came on, a few minutes late the warning "service power steering" came on. power steering continued to work, although a little jerky, until i turned off the engine. when i restarted the car, the warning "service power steering now" came on and the power steering no longer worked

Driving my family home, my dashboard displayed a message to "service power steering soon" steering wasn't an immediate problem...however, a few hours later, i attempted to drive the vehicle to a mechanic and when i turned the wheel the steering was very hard to do, very stiff. there was also a message that came on the dashboard that said to "service power steering now". i contacted a mechanic & they informed that i could possibly reset the power steering, by just turning the car on and off a few times. however, this method did not work. computer is having trouble uploading the video

The electrical steering has gone out in my car. i called ford and they refuse to do anything about this. i find this unacceptable since they currently have re all's on 2012 ford fusions for this exact issue. my life and my daughters could be in danger behind them not taking responsibility and fixing this just because it's not on that particular vin #

4/19/18 i was backing out of my garage and the steering assist fault message came up and steering locked up. ( so i was backing out of my garage to the driveway- less than 10 miles /hour) dealership said this was a common problem and there had been some kind of extension on the warranty but mine was not covered b/c it was too old or too many miles. i had to spend over $1300 to repair this. i called ford motor company to complain and try to get an explanation as to why if something like this was already a problem why would the not cover it. they said they did have a recall and i had taken my vehicle in in august of 2015 for the fix so the said it had been more than a year from that date and now not covered again. however, since this is the same problem that they fixed before, i feel there is still and issue with the steering out there since it was the same part that went bad and is a very dangerous thing to go bad in such a short period of time. ford stated that this would be reported and to save my receipt.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while driving 45 mph, the power steering warning indicator illuminated and the steering ability seized. the vehicle was taken to lehighton ford (54 blakeslee blvd dr e, lehighton, pa 18235) where the contact was informed that it was included in an unknown recall for the steering. the manufacturer was not notified. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 70,000.

While pulling into my residential home driveway the steering wheel locked up while car was in motion, unable to unlock or change the direction of the vehicle, vehicle had to be stopped and engine turned off. the vehicle was on a city street in residential area.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while driving 55 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. while attempting to pull off of the roadway, the vehicle drifted to the right. the steering wheel turned all the way to the left and seized. as a result, the contact crashed into a guardrail. there were no injuries and a police report was not filed. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 65,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. the contact stated that the steering column made an abnormal popping noise while the steering wheel was being turned. the failure occurred without warning. the vehicle was taken to jim click ford lincoln east tucson (6244 e 22nd st, tucson, az) where it was diagnosed that the control arms needed replacement. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 83,000. *tt

I took my car in for the recall #15s18 which is for a loss of power steering. i was quoted by ford that it was not covered under the recall and that i needed a new steering gear. they quoted me $2000 to fix it. come to find out the part is part of that recall, however i'm just past the mileage limit. i have 152,000 miles on my car, and the limit is 150k. ford won't budge with the repair. won't give me a break since it's literally 2,000 miles over. this steering issue is a massive safety hazard....and doesn't need to have a mileage limit applied to it. the statute of limitations for recalls is 10 years. my car is only 6 years old. recalls needs to be good for that 10 years, regardless of mileage. if the nthsa could look into this and maybe get ford to change the recall by eliminating the mileage limit for safety reasons, i would appreciate it. i called ford corporate and asked them to give me a break since it's only 2,000 miles over, and they refused. i will never buy another ford again. clearly they are more concerned with profits than they are fixing a defective problem with their own vehicles.

Too hard to steer and turn

Steering wheel locked down in my front yard, right front light went out i was told it was a electrical problem and now it is the passenger airbag now i am afraid to drive the car long distance

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. the contact stated that the eps failed within two months of being repaired per an unknown manufacturer recall. the contact stated that the eps warning indicator flashed, but then remained illuminated and the steering wheel seized. the dealer (lance cunningham ford, 4101 east clinton highway, knoxville, tn 37912, 865-687-2100) refused to provide a permanent remedy. the contact informed the dealer and the manufacturer that the recall remedy failed to provide a solution and the vehicle would need to be diagnosed and repaired. the contact also informed that the vehicle was not included in a 12,000 mile warranty. the failure mileage was not available.

The power steering assist fault message appeared in the odometer display. this could not be reset by turning off the ignition for 10 seconds and turning on the ignition again. this message has been intermittent for 6 months. it would appear often with first start up on rainy and rainy on cold days. never occurred while driving. i drove the car to a local repair shop. the steering takes a great effort to turn the wheel. had a near miss accident with wood trash on the highway. the repair shop said this could be covered by an extended recall. the ford dealers we called said their system was down not able to check vin for recall. it has about 83000 miles and 6 years old. the steering failure is a significant safety defect. i've driven cars before without power steering - easy compared to this fail. this failure is extremely unsettling feeling when trying to make a curve or turn. check back later to see if ford repaired this.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while attempting to start the vehicle, the steering wheel seized and was difficult to turn in either direction. the vehicle was taken to a dealer (milnes ford, 333 east genesse street, lapeer, mi 48446, (810) 667-5000) where it was diagnosed that the steering module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 141,000.

Error code c1277 power steering failure. driving down the hwy power steering failure light/warning comes on and power steering goes out. took everything in my power to keep the car between the lines. this is very unsafe for it makes the vehicle very unsafe to drive.

This is the third time my steering has locked up on my car while driving. this is a big safety hazard! this part on ford fusions was recalled a couple years back and this part ihave been fixed by ford dealerships multiple times. if a part is under recall and fixed why do i have t continue to keep getting the same issue fixed!

Complete loss of power steering on the highway. almost caused a severe, deadly accident. was able to pull the car over and get towed home. had a mechanic check it out and everything looks fine, started up and power steering has returned. i am too afraid to drive my vehicle now, so i am carpooling to work. please issue a recall, many fusions are having this issue, yet no recall on my vin! that is wrong. ford is aware of the problem.

I was driving my vehicle back home from the movies and i had my nephews with me. the message came up on my dash saying 'service power steering now' it was midnight so i was not able to call anyone to see what the issue was. thankfully i made it home and dropped my nephews off at their homes. the next day i was getting ready to leave to work and the message was still there and i was no longer able to turn my steering wheel. apparently this year is not covered under the recall of other ford vehicles with the same issue.

The "power steering assist fault" warning flashing on 2012 ford fusion upon turning on vehicle, experienced a power steering failure and steering wheel was extremely tough to turn.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while driving approximately 40 mph, the power steering warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle became difficult to steer. the vehicle was towed to the dealer (oc welch ford lincoln, 4920 independence blvd, hardeeville, sc 29927) where the contact was advised that she would have to pay to have the vehicle repaired. the manufacturer opened a case and advised the contact to call her local dealer. the approximate failure mileage was 168,000.

Recall 15s18 steering gear, while driving the steering while turning the make a noise . took it to jim click ford because a code didn't show on dash ford will not cover the cost to replace the steering gear which is the issue with the car. so we are unable to drive the car it is dangerous/ unsafe to drive the vehicle. the steering make noise when in motion, stationary on street and highway when turning the steering wheel. nhtsa #1227804 /ford case#14458165

The dash on my car reads 'power steering assist fault.' the recall is for 'epas steering efforts' this recall was performed once on my car already back in 2015, however the dealership only reprogram the module. they never the defective parts, which means they only half did the job. now my car actually has power steering failure and the same error is coming up on the dash. i reached out to the dealership and they told me that i would be responsible for the cost and that the repair is out of warranty and the recall is closed. so i called the hoe office who said e they would look into it. now after a day i have been informed that the home office will not enforce the recall to make the dealership fix it correctly. i know that the epas recall covers many parts in the power steering. i feel like it should have been fixed right the first time. and that they are just trying to get out of responsibility. attached is the response from the home office of ford.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. after starting the vehicle, the steering column seized as a 'don't drive the vehicle" warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was unable to be driven. the vehicle was towed to crown motors (555 cypress ave, redding, ca) where it was diagnosed that the steering wiring was corroded and needed to be cleaned. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. the failure mileage was approximately 59,411. *tt *tr

The first time my power steering went out was when i was turning onto a busy intersection and was almost hit by two cars that were going pretty fast. i was able to drive it to a nearby ford service center and the fixed three recalls: the throttle body, the powertrain, and power steering. not even 8 months later, those same three issues went out again. the power steering went out when i was on the highway going 70 mph. i ended up spinning and damaged my front bumper trying to pull over and be safe.

I was getting in my car to leave walmart, saturday 2/3/2018 when a warning flashed on my dashboard saying "power steering assist fault" thats when i realized i had no power steering. i then had to have my car towed to my house first then monday 2/5/2018 to long lewis ford.

After my wife stopping to fill up the gas tank, she started the car again to find out that the power steering failure message appeared on the dash. she couldn't move the steering wheel, luckily there was a parking spot right in front of her. she was able to get it towed to a ford facility, she had to get a rental car and wait 3 days before ford could look at it. after they looked at it they said the part that broke was part of a recall (15s18) that was fixed a year previously and that it broke again. she was told the part would have to be replaced again but it would cost $1613, not covered under the recall. after she told me this i contacted ford customer service, they said they would look into it. a couple of days later they said they could not replace it again under the recall. i had to fork over $1613 to repair the recalled part. seriously this is a safety issue, the recalled part didn't do what it was supposed to do. if my wife was driving during the steering lockup instead of at a gas station serious problems could have occurred, like a major accident. i'm not the only one who has had this problem, i've read about more people having the same issue about the recalled part. nhtsa needs to force ford to have another recall on 15s18, before a serious accident or fatality happens.

While driving today, the power steering stopped providing support. advancetrac and power steering failure now display in the message center. i almost hit a pedestrian as the ps failed as i was making a lh turn. when the assit failed, the car straightened out and i was headed right for a person standing on the curb

While driving the service power steering and service advancetrac warning show up in the display. we made it home with no loss of power steering. the next morning started the car and now warning light say service power steering now. there is now a complete loss of power steering. i went on internet and seen a recall (15s18) for epas steering and found out it was only for cars manufactured up until 2/28/2012 and according to our vin# our vehicle was manufactured 3/23/2012. i took it to a local ford dealership for diagnosis and they recommend replacing the epas steering gear

The advancetrac system has gone bad, forcing me to lose power steering and power to the engine. incredibly hard to diagnose the exact problem. replaced multiple sensors and fuses and issue still exist.

I was driving at 545 am monday, jan 29th. advancetrac power steering light came on. driving immediately became more difficult. had to fight to keep the car in the lane. i drove home safely. i learned about the recall on my vehicle, but ford told me it didnt apply. now, today steering wheel is locked and i can not get the car to the dealer. seems to me like the recall might be at work and may affect more vehicles than it went to. strange thing is i bought the car right after the recall notices went out.

2012 ford fusion sel 67000 miles. during operation the vehicle exhibited a service power steering assist notice. without change to steering habit. luckily while pulling into an empty parking lot the notice changed to service power steering now, and proceeded to lose power steering altogether. after taking it to charles gabus ford, they ran diagnostics and told me it was $1500 to replace the entire system due to a failure. they also tell me there is not a recall on my specific vin. although on the ford website and yours, i see a recall on 2012 ford fusions for power steering assist failure. it is obvious not all the appropriate vehicles were recalled since mine failed and does not have a recall on it. like i said earlier. luckily i was already in a parking lot moving at a slow speed. if i were still on the highway like i was 5 minutes prior, then i may not have been so lucky. i called ford customer service and they were the least bit sympathetic nor helpful. continued to send me an email declining financial assistance. i do not believe that i should have to pay for this repair although i am currently going to.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while driving 45 mph, the steering wheel seized and all the warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact drove the vehicle to his destination with no power steering ability. the vehicle was powered off and restarted, but the failure recurred. griffeth ford lincoln (located at 213 main st, presque isle, me 04769, (207)-764-4129) diagnosed that the steering gear and rack failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to nhtsa. the approximate failure mileage was 67,809. *tt*jb

Power steering failure while driving my vehicle. ford has diagnosed the issue, and replacing of steering gear is required due to power steering failure. diagnostics code u3000. in my opinion, this vehicle should be covered under recall #15s18. my vehicle was manufactured 6 days outside the time window for recall #15s18. however, it was manufactured in the same facility, only 6 days outside the time window for recall. i have the same issue as described in recall #15s18, and ford diagnostics confirmed this. i'd like to know the steps to take in order to have ford honor this recall. thank you.

On 1/4/18 i got in my car and noticed the car was pulling to the left, it would stop pulling at speeds over 40mph. thinking it could possible be a tire issue i had them rotated (tires have less than 12k miles on them) i then noticed that the car was now pulling to the right constantly. when i was driving on the interstate the car flashed a service advanctrac and service power steering now warning. while i was traveling 60mph the power steering cut out completely. thankfully i was going in a straight line and not going around a corner. or that we were not traveling during winter conditions. at that point i figured i didn't have a tire issue. i took the vehicle to a ford dealership. after inspection the claimed that i had a faulty steering gear. i had done some research before they had diagnosed it to see if it was a common issue with the fusions. i then noticed that there had been a recall for that exact issue i was having. when i asked the service tech if it was an issue that was warrantied they claimed it wasn't. after paying $1520 to have the gear replace. i called ford to inform them of my concern of how unsafe it was to have your power steering cut out. especially when this is my wife's daily driver. they told me 'just because you have the same make, model, year, and circumstances that other cars have covered under recall doesn't mean yours is covered.' which is alarming to say the least.
