We have classified the 872 complaints from 2012 Ford Fusion about STEERING into the following categories.
Was on my way to pick up my son from school, traction light came on, got the car turned into school, everything was ok. traction light went off from leaving the school, came back on when we came to a stop light, then the power steering assistant came on, 'service soon'. got home and was going back to work, couldn't turn steering wheel. i just parked the car. only drove about 5 miles before it locked up. luckily i live less than a mile from work. seen that many people have had this problem, don't know if this the first time this has happened to this car, since i bought it used. think my ford company sold me a lemon. boo on their part. ford service department said it would cost $1800-$2500 depending if i buy used or new.
October 12,2018 as i'm leaving home around 6:45 am to drop my daughter off at daycare and head to work. the service light comes on for the power steering. the steering wheel is molding hard to turn but not bad enough where i was struggling much. i made it to work as i live about 15away from my daughters daycare. around 4:50pm est i clocked and tried to leave from work to head home and i could not turn the steering wheel at all. did some research and found out it's electrical so there's no way for me to just add powering steering fluid. my mechanic was under the impression that all i had to do was purchase a pump. called ford and was informed that there is no pump and it's something electrical and you have to take it to ford for a diagnostic. a lot of people are having this problem and i feel this should be a recall. i saw something online that it is recalled for my specific car but based off my vin # there is no recall for my vehicle which i find crazy and misleading.

Power steering suddenly stopped working. it started when the car was turned on and would say "power steering fault" and if i restarted the car it would go away. it would work on and off. it eventually stopped working altogether.
The power steering assist fault appear as the car was moving in reverse and lost the use of steering occurred it happened twice within a two week span. took it to dealer it gave the code u3000:49-08
At 119,889 miles on 6/26/2018, i took a ford fusion to the dealer after the power steering went out. i was driving the vehicle when a warning flashed across the display that the power steering needed to be serviced immediately, however the power steering was working fine until i turned the engine off. after restarting the engine, the power steering would not function. i took the ford fusion to the dealer and the steering gear was replaced and the power steering control module was reprogrammed at no charge. the power steering worked for about 3 months. once again, while driving the vehicle, a warning to service the power steering immediately flashed across the display, although the power steering still functioned until i turned the engine off. upon restarting the car, the power steering did not function. on 9/22/2018 and at 124,591 miles, i returned the ford fusion to the dealer. i was charged $134.95 for diagnostics and given an estimate of $1057.58 to replace the lower control arms and perform an alignment to fix the power steering. the dealer said the bearings had worn out since 9/22/2018, and that the code to fix the power steering was a hard code and the power steering control module could not be reset to fix the issue. the dealer said the bearings were warn out, creating friction in the steering, leading to the power steering control module to shut down the power steering. the dealer said the only fix for the power steering was to replace the lower control arms that included the bearings, then reset the power steering control module.
At low speed traveling down the road my vehicle notified me of two warnings one saying service advancetrac another saying service power steering
When driving my 2012 ford fusion sel awd, the power steering will (at random) cease to function and causes extreme difficulty in steering. it is nearly impossible to pull over safely. at speed this is an extremely dangerous and terrifying event. the lights for the traction control system, the power steering system, and occasionally the advance trac system come on. it is not always all of the lights all of the time, and the errors vary. i have had it looked at and the codes read, and the problem persists. i need this fixed as i have two small children that i refuse to allow to ride in the car as i'm afraid for their safety. it strands me at random at work and at school an hour from home as well. upon cranking the lights for power steering failures come on and i have to sit and wait on a ride. this is unacceptable. someone needs to fix this problem as every time i have called multiple ford dealerships, they give me a runaround explaining there is no recall for this issue. this is unacceptable because the internet is rife with posters have the same exact issues i am having and are having no assistance either from ford. please help us with this problem, as i cannot afford to purchase a new car after this one has drained me of my resources.
Sept 23.on a street while driving the power steering service light came on.the service instrak.light came on.the steering became very very hard to turn. parked and found no fluid because this car has electronic steering. sept 24.it was taken to the ford dealer to get this checked. i found the nhtsa recall 15v340000 and wanted ford to honor this recall. i put in a case with ford which they denied 4 days later. meanwhile my car was in the dealer waiting for approval. i had to get a rental car. the dealer advocated for me but was not successful with ford motor company. i had to pay for the repair paid the dealer 1200.00 sept 29th 6 days later....then 1 week later oct 6, the same thing happened steering froze up on a street and i had the car towed to my dealer.. they then gave me a loaner.. the car was cleared of codes and i picked it up oct 9. i dont feel confident this issue is resolved and feel ford motor company needs to honor the recall ford recall 15s18. nhtsa recall 15v340000. ford case #cas15880910. thank you for your help
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while the contact's son was driving 25-30 mph, the steering wheel failed to turn and the power steering indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that there was an electrical failure. the contact called the local dealer (golf mill ford, 9401 n milwaukee ave, niles, il 60714, (847) 470-9800) and was informed that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle had been previously repaired per the recall and was not covered under a warranty. the failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. the contact received a recall notification for nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). while driving at unknown speeds, the steering wheel was difficult to turn and the power assist steering failure message was displayed. additionally, there was an abnormal dinging noise. the vehicle was towed to crossroads ford of indian trail (88 dale jarrett blvd, indian trail, nc 28079, (888) 701-7963) where it was diagnosed that the steering gear needed to be replaced; however, the vehicle exceeded the mileage for repairs. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case numbers: 15852329 and 15823495. the manufacturer stated that the local dealer would need to verify the warranty information. the failure mileage was unknown.
Car lost all steering and pulled to the left with a warning light illuminated stating service power steering now. ford replaced a steering gear that was supposed to be a recall less than 30 days and 300 miles later it happened again with the wife driving 70mph on the highway. this car is a danger to drive and is going to cause deaths. ford is now wanting to charge me for the repair.
My 69 year old mother was driving the 2012 ford fusion when she lost steering control and nearly had an accident. it took all her strength to wrestle the steering wheel to the side of the road. i contacted the local ford dealership and was told i would have to pay to have it repaired even though there was a recall due to that exact problem with steering. the car was not cornered because the mileage was 153000. three years past the limit of the recall. i was also advised the fix could be about. $2000. i can not afford this but i still need to drive to work so i must drive it knowing it could go out again. there was no warning light or anything the powered steering just stopped working.
My vehicles steering gear was recalled and replaced in january of 2016. the part that was put in to rectify the recall was part #ae5z-3504-de. this repair was done at ourisman world of ford in alexandria, va 22303. this part failed on septekmber 5, 2018 and had to be towed to the dealer and replaced again. oursiman charged us for the second repair. shouldn't this be covered under the recall still, or at least be recalled again? the car would barely steer and had to be parked on the street until it could be towed.
Was picking my kid up from school. backing into a spot and as i went to pull foward alittle my steering wheel locked and power assist fault appeared on the screen on my dashboard . i was part of a recall in 2015 for the same issue. luckily it wasn't 5 mins later with my kid in the car driving. seems to be a ongoing issue with steering issues my has always had a little tick while driving
Lost power steering. have service power steering now message and service stabilitrac.
The electric steering failed as described in a recall for other 2012 ford fusions, but not my own.
Takata recall i received notice in august 2018 about a recall on my vehicle, and have since contacted ford dealerships several times to have my airbag replaced, to ensure the safety of myself and my passengers. i have been informed that there is too high of a demand for these airbags, and that ford does not have any replacements (according to the dealership in bayshore, ny). they have since ignored my recurrent calls and requests for updates, and simply attempt to "pass the baton" and relay responsibilities to other departments. i sent a letter to ford corporate in michigan on november 25th (please see attachment) and have still not heard back. i do not feel safe driving in a vehicle that may explode with shrapnel in the event of an accident, and i do not appreciate being ignored and lack of diligence being shown. it is ford's responsibility to assure my safety and issue a replacement vehicle until they are able to supply customers with the replacement needed. i hope that action will be taken to rectify this situation sooner than later.
The power steering failed suddenly while driving.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while driving 25 mph, the power steering seized and a tire blew out. the vehicle was able to be driven off the road and to the contact's residence. the manufacturer stated that there was no recall for the failures; however, there was a customer satisfaction program where the power steering would be covered by a dealer. the contact called nazareth ford (4067 jandy blvd, nazareth, pa 18064, (866) 601-7744) and was informed that the power steering failure would not be covered and the contact would be charged for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 49,500.
Loss of power steering. lights flickered while driving 35 mph, then service advance trac and service power steering message came across dashboard. drove home and turned off the vehicle and when i turned the vehicle back on same messages appeared and steering wheel is too hard to turn therefore unable to drive.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while stopped at an intersection, making a left turn the steering power steering assist warning light illuminated which caused the steering to cease. the contact was able to drive the vehicle in manual steering mode to his father's residence. bickford ford 3100 bickford ave, snohomish, wa 98290 (425)334-4045 was contacted by phone and informed of the failure. the contact was informed that the vin was not subjected to a recall. the manufacturer was not contacted or informed of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 160,000. the vin was not available.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle lost the ability to steer and the power steering failure warning indicator illuminated. the contact mentioned that the vehicle needed to be driven in manual mode after the failure. the vehicle was taken to woodhouse ford (3633 n 72nd st, omaha, ne 68134, (402) 574-2759) where it was diagnosed that there was a steering gear failure, which needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 50,000.
While in stationary, the steering wheel locked up and i could not turn the vehicle. a message appeared on the dashboard saying "service power steering now." i had it towed to a mechanic and confirmed that there is a problem with the electronic power assist and must be replaced. however, the steering came back to normal after a day. i found out on ford's website that there is a recall (15n01) issued on the car and that i should contact a ford dealership to diagnose and service the problem. but, the mechanics at ford's dealership said that they were not able to duplicate the issue and therefore, could not fix it unless it happens again.
The "rack and steering gear is broken" which is the same thing as a recall for this car, but apparently doesn't apply to my vin number and therefore is not covered. i took it to a non ford repair center and they confirmed that is was the same issue as stated in the recall for other 2012 ford fusions, but i have to pay almost 2,000 to get it fixed on my own. i spent 107 dollars getting it looked at first by the other party since my vehicle was not given the recall and i wasn't informed of the issue before it happened and then still had to pay for ford to fix it.
Power steering is not working at startup sometimes. get a message on the dashboard about "electronic steering assist fault". restarting the engine solves the issue. why is this car not under the recall? it fits the description of the recall for this make model and year. it does not have the v6 engine.
The electric steering unit failed as described in a recall for other ford fusion vehicles, but mine specifically was not covered under recall.
My car is having a steering assist fault. almost half a million similar vehicles recalled for the same issue but ford won't fix this under recall.
The car had been parked for 2 days. i went to turn the car on, and it was immediately clear that the power steering wasn't working, and 'service advancetrac' 'service power steering now' notifications are on. this car had been recalled already for this issue, and clearly whatever they did, did not actually fix the problem. however, sunrise ford repair told me the recall was no longer on my car, and that it a recall repair could only be given if it was 'under a year ago', and 'under 12000' miles ago. while i look for the receipt, i do believe this is the case but if it isn't, why would this matter if it was a faulty repair done in fredericton, canada? and was going to break 1 mile over 12,000 and a day over a year, essentially. i was 50 miles away from home when this happened to me, with no cell phone reception, had to drive out of a canyon, then onto highways, with absolutely no power steering and a very difficult time driving the car. and ford told me since there was no recall on the car (?) that it would cost 135$ to even inspect the good! this was anthony, at sunrise ford in north hollywood.
Knocking sound and looseness in steering wheel. my mechanic says it is the rack and pinion. ford garage says it is not covered by recall unless it has warning sound. knocking happens whenever i am driving it.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while pulling out of the driveway, the steering lost power and the steering assist warning indicator illuminated. the contact called mid bay ford lincoln at 831-288-6294 (located at 550 auto center dr, watsonville, ca 95076) and a diagnostic test was recommended. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. the contact was referred to nhtsa. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 132,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while driving 65 mph, the power steering malfunctioned and the warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to find a failure code. the dealer (krieger ford, inc, 1800 morse rd, columbus, oh 43229, (614) 888-3320) was contacted and stated that there was no recall for the power steering. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer confirmed the dealer's information and referred the contact to nhtsa. the failure mileage was 136,351.
We were driving the car and the power steering locked the car did not give us an alert until the power steering finally locked. we could not break we had to quickly shut off the car and we weren't near our home when this occurred
Yesterday on july 15, 2018 the power steering on my car went out while i was driving to the store. it flashes on the dash to service power steering now. i've see. online that their was a recall before in 2015 on my car for the power steering but when i went to ford they said there was no recall. it is completely unsafe to be driving and all sudden the steering wheel is tight and hard to turn!
While driving my power steering failed, then proceeded to lock up once i pulled the car over. could not move the steering wheel at all, had to get the car towed.
Driving on a city street, power steering suddenly disengaged. message on dash said 'service power steering now.' i was able to manually steer safely home. contacted ford customer service and was told that the safety recall only applies to cars with less than 150k miles. since the previous owner had driven more than that, the car is suddenly safe!? how can a safety recall expire? ford wants $2000 to repair a design defect.
Front left transmission seal leaking, axle shaft loose and damaged, wheel increasingly wobbly with speed. directly and negatively affects brake rotors and pads as well as wheel knuckle stability and shock absorber wear. car is dangerous to drive as steering control has decreased dramatically. the rubber seal around the transaxle on the left (driver side) front wheel axle has been sliced open from the inside by metal shavings produced by the bad production of the parts included in the axle shaft assembly, causing abnormal wear/shaving of the shaft. the joint has been completely damaged and is now in turn causing damage to the upper and lower ball joints, shock absorber, wheel knuckle, steering arm, brake rotors, break pads, the wheel hub, wheel bearing, tire etc. it literally efects the entire driver side front suspension, drivetrain, and steering components, continuously degrading their state with time and making them more dangerous to use/more dangerous to drive the car. no history of any damage has been recorded on this vehicle on that side and this has been a factory defect from the beginning, just poorly and very slowly addressed. because if ford's untimely response to this issue, most owners are forced to deal with the issues in vehicles effected by this ford factory defect out of their own pocket, which is unfair.
Starting at 36,000- 120,000 miles the control arms wear prematurely. given the design of the linkage system this causes the steering to bind in a fashion that causes the driver to have to over steer to get the power steering to overcome the bound linkages and momentary loss of control
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while driving various speeds, the steering wheel seized. the vehicle was taken to brighton ford (190 w bromley ln, brighton, co 80601, (303) 800-3235) where the rack and pinion and steering gear were replaced three times, but the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. the contact called the manufacturer, but was unable to speak with a representative. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was approximately 104,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while driving at low speeds, the contact needed extra strength to steer the vehicle and the power assist warning indicator illuminated. after restarting the vehicle, the steering wheel became operable again. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 80,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while driving 40 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. the vehicle was able to coast to the side of the road and was towed to the contact's residence. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing of the failure. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vin was not included in any recalls . the contact was referred to nhtsa. the approximate failure mileage was 83,000.
When i purchased my vehicle it had no recalls that i was aware because i was told a vehicle can't be sold with a recall. i began having problems with the power steering and the steering when it rains had to pull over because the car started to tail spin i was very scared the vehicle began to fish tail and because of the power steering problem had minimal control.this is a very expensive repair which should not be pasted on to there customers.i was told by ford they can't help me.i am the new owner so ford should fix my problems with this car.it is a safety
Known issue, safety recall for sudden loss of power steering 15s18, 14s06 and supplement and15n01 extended. ford motor company will only repair the safety issue if certain internal fault codes are present indicating that certain components are defective, unfortunately there are more components that fail causing power steering loss, 2 codes that presented that resulted in power steering loss are c1277 and c1963 but these are not covered by the safety recall according to ford. the issue is safety and all components that cause the sudden loss of power steering need to be covered under the safety recall and repaired at no charge to the consumer. i believe that ford is skirting their responsibility to repair the the defective autos using the internal fault codes as an excuse. it doesn't matter what code is present when power steering fails as the codes are not the safety issue. the steering gear in this fusion was replaced 8/2017. the power steering failed again and was towed to ford in 3/2018, and the software was updated at owners expense and once again the power steering failed and was towed to ford in 3/2018 and according to ford the steering gear was replaced yet again at the owners expense, then the next day failed once more and the towed once more to ford. ford claiming that the first gear replacement closed out the recall. that is 4 power steering failures in the same car. ford refuses to take responsibility for the defective components and has instead shifted to cost to the owners. there are hundreds of consumers that have faced this issue.the safety recall is not having the desired effect of repairing the issue and now ford is playing a waiting game as the vehicles are reaching the 150 thousand mile threshold where by ford will refuse to repair the problem. there are about 500 thousand of these defective cars on the road today and we are no safer.
Since owning the vehicle there have been instances where the power steering assist warning would flash on my dash, typically during cold weather. i could turn the car off and then back on and the issue resolved itself. i purchased the vehicle in late 2012. it happens when i go to start it after it sitting overnight or while i am at work for 8 hours. as of yesterday (6/18) i began having trouble with the power steering when i went to leave work and drive home. i turned the car off and turned it back on and the issue once again resolved itself. this morning (6/19) i went to start my car to leave for work and the power steering assist/advancetrac message flashed on my dash. the advancetrac notification is new, it never happened until this morning. i have no power steering whatsoever. i have read multiple reports of this happening to other fusions of the same year as mine. the dealership told me that it would be $1500+ to repair this. it is an ongoing issue that has been happening sporadically since the vehicle was purchased.
