Problems with 2009 Ford Fusion SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2009 Ford Fusion starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 102 972 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2009 Ford Fusion

When braking over bumps the brake pedal goes to the floor with no response. abs module sticking.

Brake pedal went soft and difficult to stop

Had to press my brake pedal all the way to the floor to get the car to stop. took car in to dealer 12-21-2016 and was told the brakes were now properly working. the brake problem started when i went over a speed bump on my street about 2 weeks ago. the car was in motion. i now feel unsafe driving this car. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford fusion. the contact stated that the anti lock brake system stalled while the vehicle was being driven in the snow. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the abs hydraulic unit needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was at 61,000. updated 02/22/2017*ct *cn

As stated in nhtsa action number: pe16017, my car is having the same issue of the brakes going to the floor and not being able to build brake pressure. i have fixed/replaced every brake component (calipers, brake booster, master cylinder) but have not replaced the abs control module. all research leads to this being the issue of the valves sticking open and causing not brake fluid pressure to build.

As i was braking to turn into the driveway at work this past winter , the road was snow covered and the antilock brakes activated. since that time the brake pedal has excessive amount of travel before brakes engage. i have since changed out pads , rotors and flushed the brakes and cannot get rid of the soft brake pedal. i did some searching online this past weekend and found others having the same issue. ford needs to correct this brake issue.

When anti-lock braking system is needed, such as on a slippery road, the brake pedal goes to the floor, resulting in a lack of stopping power, resulting in a hazardous situation. when roads are not slippery, brakes work normally.

I owned this car for about 18 months. during this time i noticed when using the brakes if the abs system engaged the pedal would become soft and you had to push it hard and to the floor to get the car stopped. i had several close calls and one wreck that did minimal damage. my son also drive the car from time to time and complained of he same problem. on the morning of december 10,2016 he was on his way to take his act test and it's was in the low 20s. he topped a blind hill and there was a wreck just over the hill. he had to brake hard but the braking system failed and he ran into the wrecked vehicles. he hit so hard the airbag deployed and radiator busted. the car was a total loss. he is ok thank god but now i am left paying the car i lost off plus having to pay for another car because the braking system failed. ford has put me in a bad financial situation and needs to recall these vehicles before someone loses their life! i loved my fusion until i found out that ford is to blame for these problems. i will never own another one. nice car until someone gets hurt or even worse, killed because they have not been recalled. *tr

My 2009 ford fusion has a major problem with the abs hydraulic control unit, my brakes are very soft do no stop as they should. this has caused danger to myself and other drivers. while pressing the brake pedal it keeps moving toward the floor and there's no stopping power. it feels like you're not going to stop at all. my husband refuses to let me drive the car anymore. i've called two local ford dealerships and they tell me that the part is "part number sensitive" and is obsolete. i'm left with a car with no brakes and no parts available to repair it. ford is a disappointment! *tr

This has occurred several times over the past year with my 2009 ford fusion. when going over railroad tracks, hitting black ice and when pressing the brake pedal while driving over a small pothole. it has been in for service 3 times, and they can't find anything wrong with it. the most recent incident happen a few weeks before christmas. the mechanic told me not to drive it until he could look at it which happen to be after christmas. on this occurrence, i hit a small patch of black ice and a small pothole while coming to a stop light, the abs engaged and the brakes dropped to the floor and remained soft. this sounds like a real safety issue, please issue a recall! the mechanic again could not find a problem with anything and the brake pedal had returned to normal by the time he had it at the shop. *tr

On an icy friday night my car's brakes locked up in the "soft state" for several days after the initial trying to brake on the icy street. i took it to a mechanic and he couldn't find anything. i think they must have hit the brakes so hard that it put them back into place. i found this article a week later in our newspaper. the associated press the u.s. government is investigating some ford fusion and mercury milan cars because the brake pedal may lose pressure, making it hard for drivers to stop the vehicle. three crashes were blamed on the braking issue, the national highway traffic safety administration said tuesday. the brake pedal can go "soft" when driving on slippery or uneven surfaces. nhtsa received 141 complaints, with some reporting that their car stopped past red lights, leaving them in the middle of flowing traffic. the investigation covers ford fusion and mercury milan cars with model years 2007 to 2009. nhtsa estimated that there are about 475,000 of those vehicles. the maker of both car models, dearborn, michigan-based ford motor co., said it will cooperate with the investigation. read more here: http://www.kansascity.com/latest-news/article123086244.html#storylink=cpy. *tr

Brakes have gone soft after braking hard while driving on the highway in wet conditions on three separate occasions. cannot get ford to take responsibility and correct the problem. *tr

While traveling on the expressway at speed, on two different occasions, the brake pedal on my '09 ford fusion first began to grab then traveled all the way to the floor resulting in no brakes. the first time was just after hitting a pot hole and the second was on wet payment. the first resulted in sliding into an intersection after exiting the freeway and being able to stop. the second required me to swerve onto the shoulder to avoid rear-ending the car in front of me. the car was then inspected at a ford dealership which said the brake fluid was a bit low but no other problems were found. the pads are good, no leaks have been detected and yet the low fluid can't be explained, even though it was inspected two months earlier. both failures occurred during hard braking and one other issue such as a pot hole or wet pavement. no alert indicators lights on the dash have ever come on. the dealer reported no error codes being available from the computer. the issue has not occurred in the last 3 weeks since the last dealer "repair".

Late spring 2016 i was driving on a 35mph paved residential street. i hit a squirrel going 20mph with my foot on the brake. the next time i put my foot on the brake pedal it went to the floor resulting in an extended slowing and stopping distance. i had the car towed to tires plus in lima, ohio. i was told there was no issue and my brake pedal had begun working properly again. early fall 2016 i was driving on a state highway and turned right onto a intersecting road. as i turned (while my foot was on the brake pedal) i hit a pot hole and the brake pedal again went to the floor and i experienced extended braking. after several attempts of stopping hard the brake pedal returned to working properly. december 4, 2016, i was driving on a paved rural road and approaching a stop sign. i was braking and almost completely stopped when the front passenger tire slid on a small patch of ice. the abs system was engaged and the brakes again went to the floor and experienced extended braking. i was unable to return the brake pedal to it's normal position and functioning. this resulted in driving my car without 90% of the braking power. after researching i discovered the hydraulic control unit on the car was bad and needed replaced. i called the dealer where i had bought the car and was told they could not obtain the needed hcu to repair the brakes and another customer was in the same position i was. i was able to locate and purchase, on ebay, an original hcu for my car. i was able to have the dealer replace the hcu, thus repairing the problem. total cost of parts, labor, repairs is $850. dealer who completed repair raabe ford delphos, oh. i am still skeptical and do not feel 100% safe with the braking system. it is obvious the hcu is malfunctioning however there is no way of knowing when the hcu will malfunction. i have included the part and repair bills. *tr

Both my wife and i experienced the brake pedal going soft so that we had to press down further and the brake pedal traveled down further to get to firm resistance. the car would not brake normally but required more pressure to brake the car and took longer to stop. we felt unsafe. it occurred at various speeds, when trying to stop. the problem is intermittent and we do not know when it will occur or why it is happening. this happened when trying to stop for street lights or stop signs and occurred this past month, the beginning of december 2016. it happened when we were traveling straight or on a curve coming to a full stop. it happened on more than one date, several times towards the beginning of december 2016

I was driving about 25 mph on a winter day in mn. we had very little snow down went to stop and abs activated but i did not have any brakes. pedal went to floor and ever since then it takes a lot longer to stop and pedal goes to floor very easy. wife also drives car and she had the same thing happen going over a pot hole on a non winter day. seems very unsafe to drive at this point especially with a 5 and 2 year old in it. luckily it is our third car. *tr

After applying brakes and engaging the abs while the road was wet or had snow on it, the pedal goes almost completely to the floor and stays soft until i continuously pump the brakes to get it back to normal. the car has done this approximately 6 times over the past 3 years i've owned the car. it has 115k miles on it. a lot of people are having the same issue and supposedly it is the hcu. i have not gotten it fixed yet due to the price and availability of the part. *tr

This is the second time we've had issues with the braking system on our 2009 ford fusion. the first occurrence was in august 2016, the second on november 30, 2016. this last time i took the vehicle to the local ford dealer and had them do a thorough diagnostic check on the braking system. the dealership says there is nothing wrong with our brakes that they can document or replicate. however, the failure of the breaking system, temporarily, nearly caused an accident for my son this week. back in august it was my wife that had the episode. in august she was driving on a wet blacktop four-lane divided highway and hit the breaks for a car slowing in front of her. immediately she had almost no breaking function, with the pedal being extremely soft and going almost to the floor. this was not a case of pulsating abs action like normal. she was able to pump the brakes aggressively for a while and gradually get back enough breaking function to drive the car home. on inspection the brake reservoir was full. this week, the same thing happened on a perfectly dry concrete four-lane divided highway during a braking action when preparing to make a turn onto a side road. he nearly hit a brick sign at the college campus entrance. he pumped the brakes repeatedly and gradually had enough breaking function return that he could drive slowly to the parking lot. i took off work and drove down to meet him and tested the vehicle. the master cylinder was full to the normal level. there was no sign of leaking on any of the calipers or on the ground below. the brake pedal was still very soft but after pumping gradually returned to normal so that i could drive the vehicle home very slowly. we've now almost had two accidents when the brakes fail temporarily and without warning, then gradually return to normal operation. what is going on here? this is really scary and frustrating. *tr

While braking over a slippery surface, the abs activated. after that, when applying the brakes, the brake pedal would go way down with reduced and delayed braking action. eventually the brakes returned to normal actuation but the process has repeated, causing delayed and reduced braking, taking the driver by surprise. this is a definite safety concern.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford fusion. while driving approximately 5 mph the vehicle would not stop after the brake pedal was depressed. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 130,000. updated 02/21/17*lj

While driving on the highway during rush hour traffic stopped ahead of me. i applied the brakes to stop and the pedal went to the floor and activated the antilock brakes. this did not provide any significant braking and i rear ended the truck in front of me. about 2 months prior i hit a drainage grate and upon applying the brakes there was no brakes. after driving for about 20 minutes the brakes felt normal after applying the brakes hard a couple of times. took the car to the dealer and had the brakes checked and the only thing found was the rotors needed to be turned. the car has about 79,000 miles. *tr

When car is in motion and hits a bump the brake pedal goes soft and it is hard to stop. this has happened on multiple occasions and is still ongoing. have taken it to 3 shops and they can find nothing wrong.

Antilock brake system (abs) activates whenever braking on rough road or while hitting even small potholes. this causes the brakes to drop to the floor. the brake has to be pressed almost to the floor just to get the car to slow down. when winter came and the roads got snowy/slushy, it kept happening so often and was unsafe that i pulled the fuse that controls the abs and traction control in order to keep the abs from activating. it is an accident waiting to happen.

Driving at about 35 mph going straight, i stepped on the brakes so that i could turn, snow/ice covered roads, abs engaged. i continued on driving after that at about 45 mph, went to stop to turn into my driveway and the pedal went to the floor with no brake action at all. no fluid leaks,no warning lights on the dash, pads had maybe 25k miles on them, everything was working fine until the abs engaged on my first turn. a few months back, after the abs was activated the brakes got soft/spongy. after the car was shut off and sat for a while, the brakes reset. today, my car felt like it had no brakes. this appears to be a common problem from some of the research i have done online.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford fusion. while driving at any speed and when the brake pedal was applied, the brakes went soft and failed to stop the vehicle. the failure recurred multiple times without warning. the vehicle was towed to the dealer and the brake fluid was replaced. the issue recurred. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

Braking while going over a speed bump and anti-lock brakes engaged briefly. after incident, brake pedal became very soft. have to push pedal almost to the floor before brakes grab now.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford fusion. the contact stated that the brakes failed while attempting to slow down from 30 mph. the contact crashed into another vehicle. the air bags failed to deploy. a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed to a collision center where the body damage was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 65,440.

The brake pedal went to the floor while i was applying them under normal conditions. maybe 25 mph on a city street. after having a mechanic inspect my car, he determined the abs hydraulic unit was bad.....$1600 later the problem was fixed. i got lucky, but that failure could've been dangerous. the brakes did engage, but when the pedal was almost to the floor. *tr

Hit the brakes coming down a hill on wet surface, had a abs event and the brake pedal went to floor. had to pump brakes to stop . now constant soft pedal. no brake light or abs light came on or have since come on. had master brake cylinder replaced was not the problem. researched online and found information saying the abs system was malfunctioning and many other people have the same problem.

Immediately after a braking situation where the abs system was activated, my brake pedal had almost no resistance and it went all the way to the floor to achieve moderate braking. had to shift to park and pump the brakes to get back some resistance. if i had needed to do additional braking in this scenario i would assume i would have crashed due to lack of braking ability. car has 72000 miles on it currently and this problem has been experienced probably 5 times in the past year. after maybe 20 minutes of additional stop and go driving, the brakes appear to be normal. this happened on a city street and the abs was activated due to braking when tire went over a smooth metal manhole cover.

I purchased this used car on sept. 28, 2016. five weeks later, on nov. 4, i was nearing a red light on a city street and began to brake. unexpectedly, the abs engaged and i found myself without any braking power. i had to push the brake pedal to the floor until the car eventually stopped approximately 12-15 feet later. if another car or a person had been in front of me, i would have hit them. i immediately contacted the ford dealership where i bought the car (autonation ford of white beat lake, minnesota), told them what happened and then drove my car slowly to the dealership where they kept it for four days. they replaced the master cylinder and i was led to believe that that was the end of the problem. the dealership claimed that they didn't know what else might have caused such a braking problem. five weeks later, on dec. 10, 2016, the same thing happened on another city street as i approached a red light except this time the abs engaged because the road was semi-slippery after a snowfall and i had to brake a bit harder. again, the brakes didn't work properly and i had to press them to the floor. my car ended up sliding through the intersection (against a red light) before coming to a stop. luckily, there wasn't any other traffic or obstacles in the intersection or i would have hit them as well. i did some research on the internet and discovered that there have been numerous similar complaints with ford fusion abs systems, including a number of complaints made to nhtsa. (there's also a video about the problem at youtube.) i discovered that the problem is often misdiagnosed and that the cause if a faulty/defective abs hydraulic control unit needing to be replaced in a significant number of fusions built within the last several years. these ford fusions with faulty abs need to be recalled before there are injuries and fatalities, if there haven't been already.

Twice this year i tried to brake while going over a rough surface coming to an intersection and the brakes went to the floor and it took more distance to stop than it should. the brake pedal stayed low for about 15 min. until it eventually came back to regular position. took it to dealer on oct. 26,2016 when it happened the second time and they said they checked everything and my brakes were fine. i even suggested it seemed to be related to abs since i didn't feel the normal 'grabbing' sensation when the abs takes over.

My brake pedal has gone soft and operates now much closer to the floor of the vehicle following a rather severe application of braking to avoid a collision. (i was traveling through an intersection on a major roadway at 40-45 mph when a vehicle made a left turn in front of me) immediately following the incident, i feared that the vehicle was not going to stop at the next traffic light and so it went for the remainder of the day in october , 2016. the brakes were not right. after several days i noticed that the brakes did feel a little better, however, i am sure having driven this vehicle since purchased new, they are not what they were prior to the hard stop. *tr

When braking while driving over manhole covers or bumps in the road my brake pedal goes to the floor making braking very difficult. as it appears the abs kicks in and then fails. *tr

When pressing brake pedal at any speed the pedal goes all the way to the floor. when i took to dealer for repair they told me that the problem was due to master cylinder. i paid over $800 for repair but the problem persists. now dealer is telling me it could be the abs. they are asking for an additional $1000 to fix. help me? i am continuing to drive the car.

Summer of 2016 the warning light for air bag came on. oct 20 2016 took the car into dealership. they had the car for two days, never mentioned any recall, needed the car for the weekend, they wanted me to pay for the part in advance before ordering it. do not recall how warning light appeared on the the dash board.

In october 2016 brakes failed while making a left turn while abs module engaged. pedal went to the floor and vehicle would not stop. had to quickly pump brakes to get the vehicle to stop. after the event determine abs pump was the root cause and replaced it.

Several times, since we've owned this car, the abs system has kicked in. if this happens when the car is on ice or snow, everything is fine and brakes return to normal. however, if the abs system kicks in and the car is on a rough road/surface, then the brakes go "soft" after and remain that way for up to weeks at a time. i was driving on a neighborhood side street, late for an appointment and was doing about 35 in a 25 zone, and suddenly i saw on the cross street, they had milled the asphalt. i braked hard to slow down for the trench i was going to cross over and the abs kicked in. when i was back on normal road surface and was braking for a light, the pedal went to the floor, just stopping the car in time. i tried everything, pumping them up to bring it to a gradual stop, pushing slower on the pedal and slamming on the pedal, they remained soft and i had 0 confidence that my car would stop on time in an emergency. my mechanic had my car for more then 3 days, bleed the lines, no change, replaced the master pump, no change ( i ended up leaving the new master pump on since it's 7 years old and has over 100,000 miles on it) and re-bleed the lines a second time, no change. over a period of time, they finally came back to full pressure. i googled fusion brake problems and was surprised to find many entries referring to the same problem, that being on a "rough road" and abs kicking in, soft brakes ensued. i will find all of my receipts and have more precise info in a week or two. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

When i have gone on roads that are uneven or bumpy my brakes would not work and go all the way to the floor. they would be fine after a while. i went over some railroad tracks and it happened again where my brakes go all the way to the floor. its has been that way for about 3 months now. i have had the brakes looked at and new pads put on. its still not fixed and i still really have no brakes and takes a lot to stop. even pumping the brakes doesn't work.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford fusion. when the brake pedal was depressed at various speeds, the pedal traveled to the floor and the vehicle hesitated to respond without warning. the failure recurred multiple times intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the brake system was flushed, but the cause of the failure was unable to be determined. the vehicle was not repaired and the failure continued. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 115,000. the vin was unavailable.

Brakes go to the floor at different speeds greatly increasing stopping distance and poses significant safety concerns. brake hcu (hydrolic control unit) /abs system malfunction poses issues with bumps in the road, and braking while turning even at slow speeds. brakes return to normal after being pumped and no other malfunctions with brake system (brake booster/master cylinder/brake pads, calipers, brake fluid) operating normal after ase dealership master mechanics can be identified. occurs in city streets, driveway, parking lots.

After applying the brakes with much force to stop suddenly, the brake pedal remains soft/spongy. the brake pedal has remained soft/spongy since the event. the brakes still work and there is no warning or indicator light that indicating a problem with the brakes. i changed all four brake pads and the brake pedal remains soft/spongy. i have had to adjust my stopping distances.

The abs hydraulic unit failed while driving after hitting a small bump in the road causing the brake pedal to go to the floor which resulted in poor braking action nearly causing an accident. *tr

In situations where a driver is braking and your abs becomes enabled, there is a chance that valves inside the hydraulic control unit (hcu) may stick, greatly reducing pressure sent to the caliper/brake. the valves may continue to be stuck until either the abs is reengaged or until the valves unstick themselves, between periods of hours or weeks. while the valves are stuck, brake peddles will feel extremely spongy and are required to be pressed to the floor to actually have the desired effect of slowing the car. even when pressed all the way down, the effects of braking are severely diminished when compared to properly working brakes. reduced braking effectiveness is obviously extremely dangerous for drivers and could, even during clear conditions, cause an accident. replacement of the hcu costs several hundred dollars and is ultimately a temporary fix, as the issue will eventually reoccur.

While in the act of stopping for a red light on a bumpy & potholed road the brake system seemed to loose pressure. the brake pedal almost went all the way to the floor. this 70%-80% loss of braking power persisted until having a mechanic fix the abs system in september 2016. then sometime in october of the same year the exact same issue appeared in the exact same manner. had the mechanic once again fix it. when the "mushy" pedal problem is persisting i have to take into account that now my car has about 80% less stopping power. luckily no accident has occurred however the probability for one certainly increased. *tr

2009 ford fusion. consumer writes in regards to brake issues experienced. *ld the consumer stated at various times the brakes have failed without warning. the brake pedal drops to the floor without warning. *js

Like so many others, i experience a low/soft brake pedal. brakes have been replaced, lines bled, leaks checked for. the problem is clearly the malfunctioning abs hydraulic module, described in this youtube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0r46_unyyk8 this is a safety issue for which car owners should not be held liable. a recall should be ordered.

I have experienced my brakes giving out while braking on slick surfaces such as road repair covers, as well as on rainy roads. i have slid through intersections when the light was red because the brakes wouldn't engage. after each of these occurrences, the brakes are spongy, having to push them to the floor to even stop.this is a very dangerous situation to myself and other drivers. this has happened at least five times over the last three months. please let me know if there is anything i can do to help your investigation efforts. it's my hope that a recall will be issued for this problem. this problem has occurred always while the vehicle was in motion, and has happened on a city street, highway off ramp, and intersections. *tr

I own a 2009 ford fusion sel with the 3.0 engine. i have a problem with the brakes. the brake pedal is very sponge, i have replaced pads, calipers, and the master cylinder. this has not taken care of the problem, i have reviewed other information and it seems this is a very common problem. ford has not done anything about it. i have researched more of this problem and the only thing left is the abs pump and motor. my research shows this has taken care of the problem, the cost to do this is approximately $1500. plus labor cost. i have not had any close call accidents as some of the other complaints. this is and could be a accident waiting to happen. this problem occurs all the time while driving.
