Problems with 2006 Ford Freestyle VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

Surging/lunging of car even while pressing brakes as hard as possible. occurs quite frequently. have not repaired yet, will not let wife or daughter drive until i get it fixed. *tr

My vehicle has issues in unexpected acceleration when inching out of the driveway or parking place. it surges when the gears are shifted from park to reverse and visa versa. i was in line at a drive through at idle with my foot on the brake waiting for my turn to inch up to the order microphone. my 06 ford freestyle accelerated of its own accord, almost causing a rear end collision. the vehicle then stalled out and the orange wrench on the dash lighted up .i drove to the closest dealer in limp mode. the dealer couldn't schedule a timely appointment and i decided to try to make it to a dealer across town. the vehicle then cranked and ran without incident. upon inspection at the next dealership it was determined that the throttle body had failed and needed replaced. prior to this incident of random acceleration this vehicle was involved in a crash that occurred when the vehicle accelerated and rear ended another car. now that i reflect back to the crash, after the most recent random acceleration, i cannot determine that i was entirely at fault for the incident that resulted in a crash. i was stopped at a traffic light idling and waiting for it to change when i remember a sudden acceleration and desperate attempt to stop the vehicle, but without success before it crashed. the correction for the problem is to replace the throttle body. the dealer has said the repair part is on national backorder and no approximate date of acquisition is stated. dealer also states that my vehicle is inoperable due to the failure of said part and is a safety risk, yet ford customer service has not agreed nor offered any assistance other than putting the part request on expedited status. no recall for the widespread failure of this part has been issued by ford. ford should recall this vehicle as it is not safe to operate due to the failure of the throttle body. *tr

Engine will rev up without any pressure being applied to the gas pedal. happens more frequently when vehicle has been in park and is put in gear. happens in both reverse and forward and can cause you to jump out in traffic if not prepared to depress the brakes. has been to the dealer a few times with no positive outcome. ongoing intermittent problem. last noticed yesterday. *tr

Unexpected acceleration while brakes are applied. this happens both while in forward and reverse, and is a fairly rare occurrence, but there have been a few instances when this "surging" occurs while i've been stopped at busy streets. definitely a major safety concern, as this is a family vehicle. looking at ford discussion boards, it appears to be fairly common in the freestyle. we've also had loss of power while driving - the engine rpms go way up, power goes way down & the wrench light comes on (car goes into "limp" mode); turning the car off & then back on helped initially, but the issue has become more common & prevalent; car is currently in the shop to replace the throttle body; one of the surges caused my wife to side-swipe a concrete pole in a parking ramp as she was backing out of the parking space. failure occurred at approximately 60k miles, but sudden accelerations have occurred over the past 5k miles (approximately). *tr

Vehicle has, on numerous occasions, lunged forward while idling. the rpms all the sudden rev up and the car lurches forward or back depending on the gear. i have noticed this mostly while parking or backing out of a parking place. braking hard stops the car, but you can still hear the engine revving.

Vehicle would lunge forward when letting off brake in 2010. ford replaced the throttle body under warranty at that time. the car started lunging again several times in june 2012 and in july the wrench light came on. dealership advised us to replace the throttle body once again. *tr

Lunging problem for 2006 ford freestyle - i just went to the ford website to check for any recalls because we are experiencing a lunging problem. the official website does not list one but i found info listed thru your website with the same issue. it does happen at low speeds, we couldn't figure it out and we've spent money already trying to stop the issue but it keeps happening, it first happened about a year and a half ago and we replaced the throttle body. normally it's from going from park to reverse or from park forward. it accelerates when you don't have your foot on the pedal. the issue is starting to get worse. *tr

Throttle body failed twice. had repaired because vehicle lunged and almost hit a lady at kroger grocery store. foot was firm on brake. very dangerous in my opinion . i'm a ford motor company employee and i've heard this problem from friends at work .also engine races sometimes. *tr

When placed in reverse the auto would surge without warning, as if the fuel pedal were applied. this also did it when going from reverse to forward. had to keep foot firmly on the brake at all times or risk an accident. car became very difficult to drive when this occurred. at 80,472 miles. engine check light stayed on after another surge problem that stalled the auto. ray skillman ford in greenwood, in determined it was the "throttle body". it was replaced and while the service man drove the car, the entire a/c unit went out. they put a new clutch & compressor. after calling several ford dealerships, there has been a huge backorder of these throttle body's. capital city ford is installing two a day the same with ray skillman ford.

I purchased my 2006 ford freestyle in june of 2007. initially i fell in love with the comfort, size, and gas mileage of my new car. around 2 1/2 yrs later i started noticing when moving from park to reverse my car would sometimes stall or lunge backwards. it was only occasionally and at the time i was told i probably didn't have it in gear all the way before reversing. i had to switch from park to reverse very slowly and always be ready to hit the brake in case it decided to lunge on its own. this problem has almost completely gone away except now i have problems accelerating. almost always on the highway now my car will loose power and the wrench light will come on. once i pull over and restart it , it seems to temporarily solve the problem. this is however beyond dangerous. several times this has happened in places on busy highways where there is no shoulder. i have to travel in the slow lane now 100% of the time and i try to avoid major interstate at all costs. i have invested a great deal of money into several different things that have turned out to not be the problem. i feel like this car should have been recalled by now, before it ends up killing someone. i bought this car because it seemed like a great family car but now i am scared to death to even let children ride with me. i am also very upset that after paying down over a 20k loan to 5k that i will have to buy another car. i planned on having this car for years and years. i attempted in 2009 and in 2011 to trade the car in for a new car and the $ value of trade in is very low. the dealerships are well aware of the problems and offer a very small amount for a 7 passenger 2006 with only 85k miles on and it gets great gas mileage compared to most suvs or vans that seat 7. *tr

Vehicle would surge while parked in reverse or forward. with the foot on the brake vehicle would actually lurch in movement several feet. one time almost hitting a pedestrian. the transmission failed due to a failed inlet shaft bearing which was caused by incorrect machining of the inlet shaft. *tr

The car will suddenly surge even without my foot on the gas. sometimes even when we are braking. has not actually caused an accident yet but worried it could. took it to the ford dealer at one point (jones west ford) but they said they had never heard of such a problem and were unable to find anything. the reset the computer on the car and thought that would maybe help but it still continues to this day and that has probably been close if not more than 2 years ago. i have read that people have experienced this similar type of problem although my sister who has a 1995 has not so it must not be in every one that was made. *tr

Our freestyle has a repeated tendency to surge forward from stop with no application of the accelerator pedal. last year when we took it in to the dealership they said they could find no problems with the car. the problem has since gotten repeatedly worse and we have surged into other cars when trying to leave a parking space. this problem is not consistent, but it occurs on a regular basis; several times a week. *tr

Issues with throttle body , the wrench light has come on multiple times while driving at low speeds(under 45mph) the can will randomly lurch at low speeds , having the air conditioner on seems to make the problem worse . the way the car jolts and jumps is unpredictable and makes the vehicle unsafe . this problem has been happening since we purchased the car , and after years and many trips to the ford dealer the problem will stop for only a few days or few months and then the same problem starts all over again. also other owners of ford freestyles made either in2005 or 2006 have also experiences the same exact problems i have experienced. i strongly feel this car should be recalled due to the safety issues. *tr

Bought car used, certified, but noticed right away that car would lunge backwards when i would go to back up. ford found no problem. problem continued for numerous months and then at about 56,000 miles issue escalated. now car lunges forward or reverse, moving anywhere from 2 to 8 feet. at times it feels like pressure is being pushed from the brake up, to my foot......pushing it off the brake. problem is worse the more car is driven that day, and seems to happen mostly when ac is on. but in the early days of issue air was not always on. if someone walks in front or behind me when this happens they would certainly be injured.

I have a 2006 ford freestyle with the same problem, the suv lunging forward when in drive or if your in reverse it does it to. i also have a fail safe issues the little wrench lite comes on and acts like it's going to die, and when you turn the key off and wait a couple of seconds then restart the car it is fine. also i go through rear brakes like candy. why isn't there anybody making ford accountable fore these problems. *tr

I have a 2006 freestyle. 2 years ago i had to have the throttle body replaced due to unintended acceleration that got to be dangerous. this fixed the problem, but now i am again having the exact same issues, especially when the air is on. i now have a teen driving and i am very concerned for her welfare. i already paid 800+ to repair something ford should have repaired at their cost. now i have the same issue. does someone have to get hurt before ford recalls this part? *kb

2006 ford freestyle loss of the ability to accelerate on highway during traffic. have to pull over and restart to reset. happens randomly every time i drive the car. ford says it is a throttle body unit failure, but can do nothing since the part is back ordered for 6 months and has been for over a year. two tsb's over the course of two years, but no recall on a part they cannot even keep in stock for over two years due to the constant failure. now my wife and family are in danger every time they drive the car until the part is available which is always changing and never a firm date. *tr

My 2006 ford freestyle will accelerate at times when my foot is not on the gas pedal, even if my foot is on the brake pedal. it will also stall when the car is in motion, the engine will rev up and shut off. it also will not accelerate after stalling out when i push on the gas pedal. i had taken my car into the dealership on july 28, 2009 to have this looked at and repaired. i have been told that the throttle body needs to be replaced to fix my car, but that the part is on back order until december 2009. i have called each month to get an update and each time have been told something different, in august 2009 i was told that the part was being manufactured and should be in soon. at the beginning of september 2009 i was told that my car was at the top of the list and that it should be in by the end of september. when i called the dealership at the end of september, i was told the part would not be manufactured until the end of october with a delivery of late november, so the projected repair time for my car would be late november early december. i have been unable to safely drive my car for more than 2 months, it is my only means of transportation for my 3 children. so earlier this week we decided to contact ford directly to get to the bottom of the repair issue. we are now being told possibly the middle of october the part will be at the dealer for repairs. and they have sent a mutual release for me to sign in order to have a loaner car to use until the repairs have been made. in this release it removes any and all liability for the repair from ford, its dealerships and subsidiaries. in researching the repair issue with my car, i have found that there are several others waiting on the this same part and repair and was told at one time by the dealer that there were over 900 cars of the same model with the same issue and yet there has been no recall from ford. *tr

My 2006 ford freestyle surges forward when stepping on the brake. this started in the beginning of july 2009. it does this every time i step on the brake. almost causing me to hit cars in front of me.ford claims the throttle body assembly for the 2006 ford freestyle is not being produced any longer. my car was replaced with a used part telling me it could only be guaranteed for 6 months. my car is only 3 years old and i feel ford motor company should be responsible for this problem. *tr

2006 ford freestyle - pulling into parking space and braking, car surged forward narrowly stopping before hitting rock wall. car had been surging occasionally when stopped at traffic light, putting car in reverse to back up. problem has been ongoing for more than a year. two trips to local dealer with complaint of problem. they could not duplicate problem, therefore kept no record of vehicle being brought in. occurrence of surging had increased in the past few weeks, becoming more noticeable after transmission was replaced to the point of happening about 4 of 10 times you step on the brake to stop. on july 24, 2009 took vehicle back to dealer and they were able to duplicate surging. told me that it was the throttle body -needs replacing- very common problem. part on backorder until november, 2009. told them that i felt that this was becoming a safety issue. was given the number for ford's customer relationship center. called the customer relationship center that same day. crc rep that i spoke with again told me that this was a common problem and that the part was on backorder until november. ford is changing the vendor who supplies this part and that is part of the delay. i asked her who was responsible if in applying the brakes an accident happened, she said that she couldn't answer that question. i told her that i felt this was a safety issue with the vehicle and she told me that if i was concerned for my safety that i probably should not drive the vehicle. i asked about the length of time before a replacement could be obtained and was told that vehicles still in the 36,000 mile warranty will be replaced first, then those with the extended warranty (which i have) and finally those in which the warranty has expired. if ford has had a large number of the throttle bodies to need replacing (as both the dealership and the crc rep stated), why has ford not sent out a warning or done a recall of vehicles to check for this faulty part. *tr

I was transporting my children on a hot day. we were idling with the a/c on. the vehicle was not in motion. i had my foot pressed firmly on the brake. the vehicle then lunged forward several feet. there were no impacts or accidents, but as i began to accelerate, the vehicle acted as if it was going to stall. it was sputtering and kept lunging as if i had removed my foot from the clutch the check engine / wrench light came on and the vehicle died. i tried to restart the vehicle multiple times, and it did eventually turn back on, but the vehicle was sluggish and continued lunging. i brought the vehicle to our local ford dealer, jackson ford-mercury tag #540, as it was still under warranty. they checked the air conditioner and found nothing wrong. i took the vehicle back to the same dealer a short time later for the same problem and again they could find no problems. as the season changed, the problem cleared up. we were no longer using the a/c. the following summer, same conditions, same problem. i took it to a different ford dealership big valley lincoln ford mercury ro # 625097 and explained the problem and provided the repair tag number. after performing a mult-ipoint inspection, not once, but twice, and a diagnostic hvac system check, they also could find no problem to repair. concerned that our warranty was getting ready to expire, we asked them to document the incident. we've taken the vehicle to many local mechanics as well. i am unsure of which parts are actually faulty because the vehicle has never been able to be diagnosed. we don't utilize the a/c because it causes the vehicle to stall and fails to cool the air properly anyway. i believe my vehicle is encountering the same defect as many of the others described up here and i think that ford should repair the defect, as i and many other consumers purchased these vehicles in good faith.

Our 2006 freestyle was purchased in 2008 and had no issues for the first year,however, after that we started having problems with it. the engine will race and the vehicle will lunge forward or backward, depending on whether it is in a forward gear or reverse, you must have your foot on the brake anytime you put the vehicle in gear. while this mostly happens when you are entering or exiting a parking space, it has also occurred while stopped at a light or waiting to pull onto the highway. quite often the vehicle will even die when the brakes are applied when the vehicle lunges while in the process of backing out of a parking space. sometimes when this happens the wrench and service engine lights will come on, after time they will go off. occasionally after this happens the vehicle will seem to have lost some of it's power and will not accelerate normally, sometimes pulling off of the road and restarting the engine will cause it to run correctly. the vehicle had less than 50,000 miles on it when it started acting up and now has over 100,000 miles and is still having these problems, so i don't think the mileage actually has anything to do with it. we have not seen where the temperature outside or whether the a/c is on has any effect on this problem. after looking on this site and seeing that the first complaint of this problem was written in 2008 it just amazes me that nothing has been done about this issue! this is a very dangerous problem and something should be done about it, had we known this was a problem before we purchased our vehicle, with certainty we would not have endangered our family's safety as well as that of the general public by purchasing this vehicle. *tr

Since the car was new the engine would surge slightly when placed in reverse. turning the steering wheel while stopped seemed to accentuate the condition. in the last week the surging has become dangerous. the engine revs excessively and makes it difficult to control the car when backing up. several times i came close to hitting cars and objects behind me. the last time this happened it was all i could do to get the car stopped in time before hitting cars parked behind me. the service indicator (wrench) light then came on and the car entered limp-in mode. the engine was turned off and restarted. the car behaved normally at that point but was taken directly to the local ford service department. they indicated a failed etb (electronic throttle body) and a total cost to repair of over $800. part is not available locally. they say it will take several days to come in. *tr

We initially experienced surging while maneuvering in & out of parking spaces. later the car failed to accelerate beyond 15-20 mph while driving down the street. ford replaced the throttle body on the date above (6/16/09) at 53,700 miles at a cost of $780, which solved the problem until recently. two weeks ago (8/15/11) we began to experience the surging again while maneuvering in & out of parking spaces. we now have 90,000 miles on the car. (ford also replaced an engine mount when they replaced the throttle body in 2009 at a cost of $428.)
