We have classified the 341 complaints from 2006 Ford Freestyle about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
2006 ford freestyle p2106 throttle actuator control (tac) system - forced limited power i believe you know the problems, etc. from the many other complaints! *tr
My ford freestyle se has begun stalling when i put on the brakes to stop. it has also started lurching forward uncontrollably when stopping as well. during this incident, my foot is on the brake. this is a very dangerous situation because the car is not under my control when it is accelerating. stalling at a stop sign or red light or when applying the brakes is a huge safety concern for a rear-end collision. this is a serious safety issue. *tr
There have been multiple engine or transmission related problems with this vehicle dating back to 1 year ago. last august, the car started lunging when idle without the driver pressing the gas. this happened numerous times when we lived in california while idling at traffic lights or while driving slow in parking lots. we brought it in and had a part replaced for $800 and was told everything was fine. 3 weeks later the car was revving high and making a loud whur. we brought it back in and was told that the transmission had to be replaced and that this was a known defect with the freestyle automatic transmission. it cost over $5000. we moved to georgia in april and the lunging problem resurfaced. we had to spend another $1300 to fix this. then low and behold, 6 weeks later, the transmission blew again. this car is a hazard and needs to be taken off the road by ford.
Ford freestyle lunges with foot on brake in forward or reverse...very dangerous could easily lead to serious accident. please contact me about this! [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
When placed in reverse or drive vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly accelerated. this happens even when driver's foot is on the brake petal and usually when a/c is on. typically happens when the car is first started and placed into gear but will happen even if car has been running a while, stopped, and changed into a different gear.
It just started lurching when you let off the brake, i have almost hit the car in front of me because of this. i have been told this problem is caused by the throttle body assembly. it happens in my drive way, at fast food drive thrus, the bank. i have yet to fix it because the part is on back order through ford. i have tried to locate one on the internet. this part is about $500. it happens sporadically so you never know when it'll lurch. it scares me and who ever is with me. *tr
When car is put in reverse (automatic transmission) the vehicle will attempt to accelerate. pressing firmly on the brake at the same time will reduce the acceleration. *tr
2006 ford freestyle-engine surges when going from park to drive/reverse and loses power. the car has been to the ford dealer twice for this problem and still does it. research done on the internet shows alot of people have had the same problem. if you do now have your foot on the brake hard you could possible hit something. i was told ford knows of the problem but they just keep replacing parts. 1.mass air flow sensor 2. some throttle module 3. transmission. *tr
The vehicle surges in forward and reverse without warning. this occurs randomly; typically at least hourly when driving in-town. i have read that ford says the problem is the throttle body. *tr
Sudden acceleration while in traffic , a/c running - foot on brakes . car engine rpm rev's up. you have to turn the car off and restart of face danger. *tr
2006 ford freestyle, throttle body assem. sticking and lurching. creates a very dangerous driving situation as the vehicle will rev unexpectanly, at lights-signs in parking lots etc., loss of power on a busy freeway!!!, throttle body backlog for up to 6 months so car owner is forced to either drive or park. *tr
The throttle body in my 2006 ford freestyle was causing my car to either stall or lunge out of control. trying to pull into traffic, the car stalled in front of oncoming traffic. then began working as normal. a few days later the car began to lunge forward or backward when the transmission was shifted. would lunge when in drive and stopped. took to dealer, and they replaced with a new throttle body. i do not have the old one. ford knows there is a problem. they have been backordered for most of 2009 and into 2010 on this part. they have changed the replacement part to a new one, with different part number. thousands of cars have had this issue. cars can stall at highway speeds, in traffic. or can suddenly lunge forward even when the brake is depressed. *tr
This summer i began experiencing issues with the car suddenly accelerating and lunging forward if the car is in drive or backward if the car is in reverse. the issue usually happens when the ac is running and it is hot outside. i almost ran over a person because the car lurched so bad. the wrench light on the car came on. after restarting the car had very little power while the wrench light was on. ford has no remedy. *tr
Throttle body/transmission numerous incidents of 2006 ford freestyle surging while idling. dangerous in traffic as the brakes would have to be held down in order to not hit car in front of you. transmission failed going down expresssway at 65 miles per hour with 3 grandchildren in car. car had to be towed 350 miles home. in addition to all of this, my in-laws have the same type vehicle and are now currently having the same problem. with the current online compaints, this doesn't surprise me. ford knows there is a problem with this transmission and discontinued using it in later model freestyles. i think ford should be held responsible for selling a vehicle with defective transmission and throttle body. to replace the transmission would cost 5,000 to 6,000 dollars which is half the price of the car. this is totally unfair for loyal ford customers to have deal with. this would be our 41st year of owning only ford vehicles and will be our last. there are too many of these incidents being reported for nothing to be done. thankfully no crash or injury but i suspect that the latter is what it will take to finally have this issue investigated. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 ford freestyle. while driving in reverse at an unknown low speed, the vehicle surged backward until the brakes were applied and the vehicle stalled. after the vehicle shut off a transmission service light illuminated on the dashboard. upon restart the service light was no longer illuminated on the dashboard. the contact also stated that the failure occurred previously while driving forward. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they were unable to determine the cause of failure. the failure and current mileages were 100,800.
2006 ford freestyle. consumer states problems with cvt transmission *tgw the consumer stated the first incident with the vehicle surging/lunging occurred the week of july 19, 2010. she was stopped at a light and the vehicle suddenly surged/lunged, the gauges on the control panel began acting erratic and all of the lights illuminated. the consumer took the vehicle to a mechanic, who was unable to reproduce the problem after having the vehicle for 4 days. the incident happened two more times. the consumer took the vehicle to another mechanic and he found an error code that read transmission control malfunction. the consumer then went to the dealer where she purchased the vehicle and a diagnosis revealed, the vehicle needed a new transmission at a cost of $ 5,600.00. *jb
After idling for awhile in the heat the vehicle lunged forward while my foot was on the brake. the vehicle is a 2006 ford freestyle and if you go to the website myfordfreestyle.com you will find 8 pages of throttle body complaints. i took my vehicle into the dealer approx 4 months ago complaining of transmission issues and was told that the trans. was fine, never did they suggest or check the throttle body. i was in a parking garage on the down exit ramp and could have lunged forward into the car in front of me. this is a serious safety issue that is an obvious problem with the freestyle. my close friend also has a 2007 freestyle and is having the same problem. *tr
Early july 2010 car would surge after started when placed into drive or reverse. july 17,2010 about 95 degrees ambient. driving 55 mph car started to lose power and stall. restarted and it went into limp mode with check engine light and occasional surges. i found a ford dealer about 5 miles away. diagnosis was a bad mass air flow sensor. replaced and we were on our way again. early june 2011 it was surging after starting when placed in drive or reverse. june 11,2011. car stalled and went into limp mode again with check engine light on. bought a new mass air flow sensor, installed it myself and cleared the code. july 5,2011 while driving to baltimore at 65 mph and 100 degree ambient, car stalled, restarted and it went into limp mode with check engine light on. i found a parking lot with shade and let it idle for about 20 minutes. shut it off and restarted. check engine light was off and it ran fine to baltimore. this appears to be an issue with the mass air flow circuit. nhtsa cannot ignore this flaw. *kb
My 2006 ford freestyle (with approximately 60k miles) accelerates suddenly on its own when transitioning from a parked position and while idling. even when my foot is on the brakes, it dangerously jumps and proceeds with an extreme amount of speed. this causes difficulty when it occurs while parallel parking. additionally, the car stalls suddenly, without warning and the wrench light comes on. went to ford dealer and they charged me $108.00 to check the car and tell me that the throttle body and mass airflow sensor needed to be replaced. the ford service person indicated that the part was on back order for about 3 weeks as this is a common problem with this vehicle. three weeks has passed and they still do not have the part. i now understand the part cannot be located in any other city and that it may be atleast another 2 - 3 months before the part is available anywhere in the united states. no one offered a loaner car or anything. for this to be such a common problem where the part is on back order indicates to me that ford should be fixing the problem and/or compensating consumers who need vehicles (while awaiting this part and repair) that work safely. when parts are on back order indicating a demand, ford must be aware of the problem. yet the expected wait time on the part has increased which means they are doing nothing to stand by their product or make certain that safe vehicles are on the road. *tr
2006 ford freestyle. the car accelerates on its own, requiring me to use the brake hard. also, when the car starts to back up or in slow forward speeds (such as parking) , the engine shuts off on its own. ford has identified it as a throttle body problem. the part is on national backorder with no estimation of when my car can be repaired. i have looked into this and a lot of people are having similar issues. please force ford to make this part and issue a recall. *tr
In july 2010 our 2006 ford freestyle started lurching and the wrench light came on indicating a major issue. dealer advised us to pull over and call a wrecker to tow vehicle. after turning vehicle off and then back on, wrench light did not come back on, so we drove additional 5 miles to home, then to dealer 20 miles next day. mileage on vehicle 81,000. we were told there was a problem with transmission and that the cost of repair was $600 to $800. dealer indicated a problem in getting part as there had been a problem with this for some time on the freestyle. i did not keep old part, but later looked up "ford freestyle complaints" and noted there are a number of individuals having same problem, some occurring in dangerous situations. additionally we have found two local freestyle owners who have had same issue and same repair done. we put about 30,000 miles a year on our vehicles and keep them for 3 to 4 years. i have never had a transmission problem in this mileage range with any previous vehicle, and feel it should be considered a dangerous issue and placed on recall list. *tr
I was stopped and in a line of vehicles in a parking lot with my foot on the brake and the engine surged. fortunately, i had my foot on the brake with sufficient pressure to keep the car from lunging forward. this occurred several times while in the parking lot with the engine going into (limp mode) forced limited power mode. i drove the car directly to the ford dealer where the car was purchased. the mechanics did not detect any diagnostic trouble codes and sent me on my way. since then there have been probably six (6) more events without the engine going into forced limited power mode. in all events the engines surges to approximately between 1500rpm and 1800rpm with the car in drive and the foot securely on the brake. the event generally lasts less than 5 seconds. all events occurred during summer months. last event was this past wednesday when my son was driving the car. i witnessed the event as a passenger. the two codes that came up are p2106 and p061b. i purchased a tester to read the codes. current mileage is 77995. researching the potential cause of this problem led me to your site and prompted me to file a complaint. *tr
The car when your at a stop or low speed, in drive or reverse the car will try to lurch. when driving down the highway it's fine but when you come to a stop the wrench light comes on. a couple of times the car wouldn't go right away but eventually it would sometimes after turning the car off and back on again the wrench would be gone and would be able to go. sounds like sometimes the car isn't shifting right.the lurching is really noticeable when the a/c is on. can't have the a/c on when at a stop or it will lurch. *tr
Put vehicle in reverse and it accelerated backwards. almost hit a car, but luckily me vehicle shut off before we hit. (foot was on brake when i switched gears, but still accelerated) accelerated in bank drive thru and then cut off again. went to gas station after and put it in reverse with foot on brake and it accelerated back. i put it back in drive and drove home praying. per ford throttle body was cleaned and has been better, but still accelerates in drive and reverse. ford should fix this problem before someone is killed. we should not have to pay to fix a problem they had dealings with. the car owner's never did and some of us can not afford their mistake. *tr
While in idling in park with a/c on, put vehicle in reverse and vehicle began to quickly accelerate without pressing the accelerator pedal. had to quickly press the brake pedal to avoid running into people/vehicle behind me. even with brake pedal being applied, vehicle tends to lurch in reverse. this happens on a weekly basis. ford dealer said it is a common problem on this model and is caused by a part that is on back order for months. vehicle is unsafe to operate. *tr
Our 2006 ford freestyle lunges/surges when going from park to drive or park to reverse. it is occurringgg more frequently and with greater surges. this has also happened when driving at slow speeds such as pulling the car into the garage or a parking space. the vehicle has been doing this for at least 1 year and has approximately 84,000 miles on it. we have replaced the brakes pads and rotors with better than oem parts on the advice from our non-dealer mechanic so our brakes hold the vehicle pretty well when these surges occur. however it still lunges or surges and we feel that it is becoming increasingly unsafe to operate. *tr
I was in myrtle beach summer of 2010 when i was backing my vehicle out of a parking space it lunged back almost causing a wreck. then when i went forward did the same stalled. changed fuel filter and everything. about 1 month later did it again. i seems to do it when the temperature outside is warm. this is very scary and not sure what has to happen for ford to recall. i guess someone has to die and they have to be sued. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 ford freestyle. the vehicle lunged forward and backward whether or not the brakes were depressed. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. she stated that the transmission failed. the failure and current mileages were 90,000.
Vehicle suddenly lurches forward without pressing the accelerator. seems to happen when just starting to move or sometimes while coming to a stop.
When shifted from p to r or d, the vehicle surges or lunges. very difficult to control even with foot firmly on the brake. worse when a/c is on. the engine races, and rpms increase. vehicle was purchased used last year, at approximately 48k miles. noticed the problem shortly after purchase, but the problem seemed almost imaginary, then went away over the winter months. the problem has returned and seems worse at this time (summer 2011). definitely not imaginary, definitely dangerous. occurs in parking lots and intersections, where there are often many pedestrians and vehicles in close quarters. engine light has come on, mechanic says service codes indicate throttle problem. hope to have this repaired tomorrow. *tr
Vehicle accelerates went first put in gear (especially reverse). sometimes dies after the acceleration. recurrent problem. dealer says throttle body needs to be replaced, parts on back order. *tr
When pulling into parking spaces, or out of the driveway, and/or reducing speed to stop, my 2006 ford freestyle 58k will suddenly lunge forward. when you prevent the sudden acceleration by applying the brake, the wrench light will come on and sometimes it will stall. the ford dealer stated that it was carbon build-up and told me to put a can or two of sea foam in the gas tank. after running two tanks of gas, problem still persists. major safety issue. ford needs to support their customers and recall/fix the defect. *tr
My 2006 ford freestyle has started trying to run away with me whenever i've been sitting in a parking space with the engine on and the air conditioning on. when i put the car into gear either forward or reverse it shoots out of the space causing me to have to jam on the brakes. the first time this happened last june 2010,i crashed into a car that was parked behind me. it did not happen again for several weeks. when it happened again the weather was extremely hot so, i thought maybe the hot weather had caused it. it did not occur during the winter. now that the weather is getting hot it's happening again. i am very anxious every time i have to drive anywhere when it's hot outside. i talked to my son-in-law about it and he said maybe it had something to do with the transmission. but, they check the transmission when they change my oil and have not told me of any problems. *tr
After starting, and shifting into reverse, car surges backwards without acceleration. increasing frequency and severity (speed). dealer is replacing throttle body. *tr
Our 2006 ford freestyle has been giving us problems for the last two summers. it seems that when we run the a/c the car will sometimes surge forward when pulling into a parking space or coming to rest at a stoplight/drive-thru. there have been a couple close calls with hitting other vehicles in front of us. it has also stalled and the transmission light has come on numerous times. it seems that we must turn the car off to rest and then start it back up for the issue to be fixed. we are now very careful when we run the a/c because this seems to affect it somewhat. we recently took our car to the dealership and they told us we needed to replace the throttle body which would be $500 for the part without labor. we simply cannot afford to fix the problem now and are praying for safety. we will no longer buy a ford and when contacting ford we were told there was nothing they could do about the problem. *tr
06 ford freestyle with 70k miles it was bought about 4 months ago as is. the problem started about two month ago with the wrench light and check light coming on in the morning. and it is difficult to almost impossible to accelerate. i have to drive it for about 15mins before the lights go out. took it back to the dealer to have it check out the stated it would need a new transmission at the cost of 5,000 to replace it. the car is also starting to surge when driving under 30mph around town. the situation is getting worse. please help... we use it to drive two special children to their doctor appts. *tr
While driving the car it would ide up and the spit and sputter alittle after wards. brake would hardly hold car from taking off. while on vacation it would either take off or die. took to dealer and they had to replace the throttle body on it if ord knows of this problem then why are they not fixing it? is it like the brakes? (there is no problem with them either.......) *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford freestyle. upon starting the vehicle, it jerked independently forward and backward, depending on the gear the vehicle was in at the time. the failure occurred even while the brake pedal was depressed. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or mechanic. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 55,000.
2006 ford freestyle lunges and engine dies. does this when putting car in reverse or drive, and also when turning wheel tightly to get into parking spaces. it doesn't do this every time, but enough to make us concerned with the safety of the car. it will lunge forward or backward, and will go about 2 or 3 feet and you have to be sure to have your foot on the brake or you will hit something. *tr
I purchased this vehicle used from a ford dealer in 2009. about a year after purchase, i began to notice transmission problems with the cvt transmission. without any warning the vehicle will experience an unexpected failure. this vehicle is extremely dangerous due to sudden problems caused by the type of transmission. all of a sudden the vehicle can lose speed, wrench light will come on, brakes will stop functioningproperly, and occasionally jump. three different mechanics have confirmed the problem is due to the transmission. one mechanic only works on transmissions . ford is lucky more people have not been injured as a result of the multitude of problems related to the trannsmittion choice. also i find it intresting that ford made the disision to build a replica of the ford free style and call it a taurus x. one of the few changes they made to the taurus x was the type of transmission they used. *tr
2006 ford freestyle had surging problem in reverse -- revved-up from 900 to nearly 2500 rpm of its own accord, shot backward, then cut out -- happened with increasing frequency and severity -- on date below it happened in a parking lot and caused the car to hit a pole -- on a previous date it cut out while backing out onto a street from a parking space, endangering my passengers -- the dealer had to replace throttle body -- he said it was a "known issue" -- why isn't this a safety recall?
In april 2007, driver's side seat belt became jammed. had seatbelt buckle replaced. it was covered under warranty and there was not charge. on june 8, 2010 the check throttle body light and wrench warning light came on and we noticed a vibration in the engine. took vehicle in. the throttle body and motor mount were both replaced. cost of repair was $1023.24 the mileage at the time of repair was 55,234. a couple of weeks later, the vehicle began to surge unexpectedly at times in both drive and reverse. at other times, vehicle would hesitates / had little or no pick-up when starting from a stop. check engine light came on, took vehicle in on june 22, 2010. an engine sensor was replaced and the pcm was reprogrammed. repairs totaled $642.61 the mileage at time of repairs was 55,613. was told at that time the fuel filter needed to be replaced and a transmission flush was necessary. replaced fuel filter and had transmission flush done july 1, 2010. cost was $200.65. mileage was 55,695. i read an article in the newspapers and learned that others were having similar problems. i wanted to be on record with problems that we have had with this car. ford manufactured cars with issues. they should have to address those issues and compensate for the repairs that people had to pay for. the repairs that have had to be done on this car are ridiculous. between the seat belt issue and the transmission issues, i would say we have had some serious safety issues with this vehicle and we most certainly regret buying it. *tr
The vehicle is in reversed gear or forward. it only happened when the brake pedal was pressed down the vehicle losses power. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the failure was caused from the throttle box. the vehicle was repair the fist time. and for the second time the vehicle was fail with the previous problem and was taken to a private mechanic. the private mechanic diagnosed the failure was the throttle body box. the vehicle warning lights illuminated. the manufacture was not notified. the failure mileage was 71,000 and the current mileage was 91,000. lg
Vehicle surges at low speeds. the problem is worse with the air conditioning on. *kb
The throttle body in the 2006 ford freestyle. unexpected acceleration, revving of the motor. *tr
2006 ford freestyle is surging and lurking while parking or at stop lights and while in reverse. *tr
Cvt ( transmission) is failing in my 2006 ford freestyle ford knows off this ! and no recall too fix it !!! *tr
My 2006 ford freestyle lunges forward. it was several weeks from the first time this occurred to the second time, but now it is doing it almost all of the time. when it is hot outside and the engine is warm the throttle has a mind of it's own. it seems to happen most frequently when parking such as shifting from park to drive, park to reverse, or drive to reverse, but have also had it happen when stopping at an intersection. the vehicle just tries to run away with itself, the limited power light comes on and a couple of times it has stalled when this occurred. the problem is the throttle body. had the codes ran at the ford service department at my local dealer and they said they have seen over 20 cases of this same issue. i live in a very rural area and i didn't even think there were that many freestyle's in this area. i was told by the dealer to file a complaint, and they maybe they would recall the defective part. i believe this part needs recalled as a matter of safety. last week i almost hit a man in a grocery store parking lot as i put the vehicle in reverse to back out of a parking spot. he was walking behind the vehicle and i had my foot on the brakes but when the car decided to throttle by itself the braked did give a little and the man proceeded to use vulgar language and some sign language. *tr
My 2006 ford freestyle surges forward (or back) when taken out of park. occurs more frequently when placed into reverse. occasionally, the car will also stall after surging when the brakes are slammed to stop the car and a yellow wrench light will appear on dash. brought to dealership and they can not replicate. no codes. has happend about 20 times in the past year. *tr
Engine will rev up without any pressure being applied to the gas pedal. happens more frequently when vehicle has been in park and is put in gear. happens often enough that i am concerned about the safety of my family, as it is a family car. my local mercury dealer service department says that i need a new throttle body. *tr
